In this lesson I will demonstrate how to play the killer intro to Metallica's incredible "Master of Puppets".
Now I don't plan on only teaching this part of the song. I will definitely be finishing the whole thing note-for-note. I just always gauge which songs to finish first based of the support they get. So if you wanna see the rest of these lessons let me know!
In this Master of Puppets guitar lesson I will break down the extremely fast down picked intro that so many Metallica fans love.
In will require a pretty advanced picking hand technique. If you don't have very much experience with this type of rapid muted down stroke metal thrashing, simply try and get the coordination down first. Then as you slowly speed the riff up, pay close attention to any tension that may arise in your picking hand wrist, forearm and shoulder. Use small relaxed movements.
The left hand doesn't get to sit around very long either. It is required to hop down the fretboard fret-by-fret keeping up with the right hand. Getting them both synchronized can be quite the challenge.
The second half of the intro goes into a riff that is a bit easier to play since it stays put in one area of the fretboard and the right hand picking is slightly easier (I explain why in the video lesson).
This is classic thrash metal at it's absolute best so take your time and learn it right.
In the second video lesson I will finish all the heavy rhythm guitar parts. "Master of Puppets" is truly a masterful collection of some of the greatest riffs in metal history so you will definitely want to master all of these riffs.
In the third lesson I will demonstrate how to play the serene harmony guitar solo (both parts!) note-for-note. I will also show you how to play the guitar solo for this section and the clean arpeggio guitar rhythms.
In the fourth lesson we will finally take a crack at the Kirk Hammett's main guitar solo. This solo is full of blistering legato, alternate picking, tremolo picking, screaming harmonics and sequences. It is a true workout for the metal guitar lover. It is also one of Kirk Hammett's finest moments in my opinion.
In the last video lesson (yep that is 5 in all!), I will demonstrate how to play the killer musical interlude that occurs after the main solo. This is truly Metallica at their peak!
Hopefully, you guys will make it through the monster lesson series! If you do, I would love to see you do a cover of it on UA-cam! Good Luck! :)

yup
Just practice to a metronome, start slow and gradually build up speed also use the chromatic scale and play to a metronome, make sure your thumb stay in the middle of your guitar neck and is not laying on it's side. Practice your hammer ons and pull offs and as always have fun!
@@strictlysir8612 But Carl's thumb is on the side all the time

@@DiscontinuedChannelOne yes once you get the muscle memory down it gets pretty simple
Me be like- but... Pianos can't do that! How tf can I turn that into a piano solo? FU...!!
Forgot the hair move (flick)
Don’t let this intimidate you guys it’s not as hard as it looks to be honest it’s just the speed you need to practice
Shibbitybop 25 Yeah I’ve noticed that about a lot of solos there not actually that hard it’s just getting it up to speed
Aaro Saunamäki yeah that’s teuw
*true
Yeah tbh enter sandman solo looks harder then this one lmao
Mac sandman so i ez if u have wah pedal. wah pedal=mess-up autofix lol
After only 7 months of playing guitar, I finally mastered this solo. I’ve got the interlude solo down as well, I didn’t think I’d get to this point, but with continous practice and non-stop exposure to music/ theory, I’ve been able to make steps I thought impossible. If anyone reads this, do not give up, do not let a professional guitarist intimidate you, it takes time perfecting an instrument, heck, I’m not even close, but I’ve managed to learn a lot by not giving up.
Yeah, sure dude :)
i’m in my 6th month of playing, hope i’ll finish learning this solo before the month pass lmao..
honestly i think one’s solo is probably harder and i already learned it so imo imma be able to play this solo in a couple of weeks
Thats the spirit, so many people In the comment section bring you down , its not that hard guys just practice and use a metronome
how did u get better at music theory everytime i go to look at it i get overwhelmed eny advice
Proof?
hoping ill learn this before my perfomance on december
(update: i did it!!)
Good job
W
Awesome stuff! W
Hell yeah

i cant even play the main riff of the song, idk why im watching this lmao
lmao me true, try the interlude and chorus i liek it
ImKnil Im writing this comment to you after 8 months so you can play anymore
I've been playing guitar for only a year and maybe a few months, I don't think that you're the one making a mistake here
Señor Duckles I've been playing for a year and about a month I started some time in February of 2017.
I've only been playing for about 6 months
This is much easier than it looks, believe me! I'm playing for just 1 year and I can play it almost perfectly. Don't give up :D
laszlo Sandor we get it you are a prodigy
@@diegobrittain-rasmussen1167 I didn't said that, it's just a matter of practice. You don't have to be a prodigy to have a will to learn a solo.
laszlo Sandor I understand that completely but being able to play a Kirk Hammett solo after one year of playing is very prodigy like
@@diegobrittain-rasmussen1167 Well... Thanks dude! :D Keep on shredding \m/
Jesus Christ, how old are you
I find that using economy picking on the first lick makes it pretty simple. Start with an upstroke on 17 then pull off to 12. From there, downpick 13 on the b string (Using outside picking) and then just alternate to 12 (upstroke) and 13 (downpick) again. Then you can do another downpick on the 12 of the e string (This is the economy picking part.) From there the pattern repeats.
thank you so much! upstroking the 17th really helped me
A game changer, thank you so much !
I like you profile pic gojira ROCKS
it dosent sound as good i tried both couple years ago now i play the reg way it sounds different with ecomony
Tbh I prefer inside picking than economy
Melts everybody's face. "Hey, guys!" Nice

Despite many people thinking this is insanely difficult to play, I found out that a few days of practice of this solo, it’s not as hard as many people are lead on to believe

I've been playing for about a year or so and I can play the first lick it just takes a lot of dedication and hard work but it's achievable with practice. I could never play it until like yesterday. Never give up! 👌
Morasko Penta Lol yeah imagine that
The first lick was kinda hard for me but if you have patience and just practice it really slow you’ll start to develop your own ways of making it faster
It’s only took 3 days of practicing it, it wasn’t non stop either, I’d just be watching tv or something and trying to do it
And then he goes in to God mode
Ok this is the part that I CAN'T play in the song xD
Facundo Mogor I think you're one of many...I'm the same way
+Bob Page idk, didn't try it yet, I think it's not my style of playing, I'm more like a slow blues hendrix guy. :D
+Facundo Mogor thats cuz you suck but its okay
+Timothy Klemme thats what she said lol
if you don't have one already get a Metronome and set it to like 80 beats per minute or something like that and learn what way is the most comfortable then speed it up like 15 BPM get comfortable playing and then speed it up again eventually you will be playing up to speed, but remember playing slow is harder than fast, while slow all notes must be heard to sound right, but when fast you can miss a note and keep shredding people won't notice it at 220 bpm , however the will nor at like 90 bpm
You came for 3:05
you left because of 3:05
Can play the rest of it, just not this fucking part.
😂😂
Play it with the pull offs and hammers it's way easier than picking
Unbox The Future 🙏
Tip: Do the harmonic on 16-Bstring (one octave higher), sounds exactly the same and easier to reach (atleast for me)
Thank you very much man, since I don't have a whammy bar doing the harmonic at the 4th fret is kinda hard for me to bend it to sound high pitched and if i push it down behind the nut it detunes horribly but thanks to you now I have this way of doing it thanks.
You can also do a harmonic on the 5th fret on the B string to match the 4th fret’s G string harmonic.
I need help, how do I make my harmonic loud, his sounds crazy loud but when I do mine its very quiet. Im using a boss ds1 distortion
@@Blake-yx3qe use your bridge pickup it makes it alottt louder and also use a lot of gain
@@Blake-yx3qe Get a better pedal, lotta people talk smack about the Boss Metal Zone but if you're patient and learn to dial in the perfect tone, you will never want another distortion pedal again. I got the Waza Craft version and pinch harmonics ring out forever on that bad boy.
Guys dont let the people make you feel bad about your guitar skills.Just be yourself and play whatever you like,it doesnt matter how long does it take to learn a song just enjoy while youre learning it
0:10 I'm very stuck in this part damn
Hopefully you’ve got it by now, but a trick you can do is stop playing it for a few days and come back to it
@@thomaswright5060 yeah that helps sometimes
@@thomaswright5060 any time I wake up the next morning after learning something I play it 20x better
I watched a girl do a cover of this and thought, wow that looks impossible. It's hard but i can actually play it. And I think soon I'll get the speed up and then I'l be a shredding god :D
Did you do it? :D
Yes we want to know :D
Wazaaa
Done?
So?
3:05 if you're good at tapping and can stretch your hand enough you can tap it as 17-12-8-7-8-12 like I do it
Holy shit it's much easier thank you
I never remembered the solo being so long
Finally making a start on this part of the solo after putting it off for a while after learning the full harmony and first full solo, after about an hour progress is starting to show which is always nice :)
that solo is so fast impossible for me right now :D

start slow then build up the speed, youll do it in no time

Amazing. I’ve been playing rhythm guitar for years and never attempted this solo until now. Within an hour I played the whole thing, slow at first but I played it. You have a new subscriber! 🔥🎸
The first 9 seconds i was so excited. It took me two seconds after that to even give up watching the rest of the video. Maybe in the future. :O
Don't procrastinate, do it now. Everything difficult has to have a beginning.
Thanks to you man after 1 week of watching this video over and over again I Finally got the solo thanks very much man
Carl, thank you very much for these videos, you are the best rock and metal teacher. Greetings from Colombia!
for the first lick, you just bar the 12th on the e and b. Makes it so much much easier IMO.
Update: learn the actual version it looks so much cooler haha
Thank you, this helps so much!
Yeah fr
Been trying to play this solo since 1987. Still cant.
Shit. I feel bad by saying I mastered the solo after playing for 7 months, keep on practicing, for hours if you need too, the licks are pretty easy, it’s just the speed I’d say.
I have been practicing this for a year
@@VintageMusic729 Holy shit your ego is insane
Going to make my dad so proud with this one
how did it go
I’ve played guitar for over a year and practiced this solo to death and I’m finally getting the hang of it and almost mastering it. And there is no perfect, it’s only practice.
You are one of the guitarists I really look up to. Keep on rocking man! You are amazing!👍👍👍👍🎸🎸🎸🎸🎵🎵🎵🎼🎼🎼🎧🎧🎧🎶🎶🎶
I’ve only been playing since like late February of 2023 and I didn’t think I could but I tried and did learn it. A tip is to just learn the riff set a metronome and go up by fives until you got it to song speed. It worked wonders for me
i very much like your tutorial, i went through it but i still need practice and speed. Love your vids
Great lesson, Carl! Thanks!
Yaaaay the channel is back! 😁
I was doing really good up to this part -.- that first lick of the solo is just too quick :s I'll need to annoy the hell out of my wife with this and learn the rest another time (sadface)
the 3 note lick up the neck is way harder for me than the first part.
haha I got that part of solo down now !! it's weird I just practiced it every day for a couple of weeks, maybe 10 minutes a day, now I find it's supper easy LOL
jack mayhoff how long have you been playing?
MajorCocoon I've been playing string instruments for roughly 10 years or so. but I've only started playing metal these past few months. I've always liked listenning to it. just never got around to learning some.
I can play every part but the solo. I might do this for a school talent show, but I'll do something different for the solo, and skip the clean part that uses two guitars (harmony solo).
Thanks. I love playing this song
I’m 15 and have played guitar for 2.5 years. This is the most difficult thing I’ve ever tried to play and i sucked so bad but i’m curious to see my progression w/ this over time
Fr? It’s not that hard in my opinion it’s just the speed to get down

Just amazing thanks man
Gracias Carl! sos el mejor!
You are so Damn good teacher , thank you!
I was always so intimidated by this solo. But just keeping my practice up and always trying I eventually got it.
started playing guitar 5 months ago
and i can do this solo in 50% speed note by note.. just gotta keep practicing and I'll get that speed as well!! Yall practice slow and steady and dont rush :) we got this
i’ve been playing for 6 months and i’m finally attempting to learn this i can play the beginning perfectly but now i’m trying the rest it’s my first real guitar solo
the way he just glides through the solo and flips up "hey guys"
This ones for Eddie ☝️
Hey! I am a big fan of ur channel. Thanks for all the helps in learning. Can u make a lesson on Metallica - Turn the page. Atleast the solo parts.
Hardest thing for me is to get the fast bendings right, practicing them separately. Well not the bendings for themselves, but the switches between them
The way he picks the first part of the solo almost looks like a mini sweep pick
Great, thank you!)
Awesome video! Solo looks much more difficult than it actually is!
Awesome
*Finishes epic guitar solo* and casually says "hey guys guitar lesson 365 here"
U are back!!!!
5:50 The harmonic part is actually a natural harmonic at 24th fret first string; and then a natural harmonic 15th fret of the third string. You don't need to raise the pitch, as these harmonics give the highest note, pressing the whammy does the trick. Yes, I spent hours figuring this out lol.
that might work, but Kirk actually does the 4th fret harmonic
i’m 99% sure it’s actually the 3rd string 2.6 fret harmonic if you watch him play it. 2nd string 4th fret sounds flat.
lol no,its a 3rd fret artifical harmonic, sounds like you are just coping cause you cant hit AHs and settled for noob NH
awesome... good teacher...
Bro the pentagonic licks are so cool
After fu*king 8 months i did it! \M/
Lol

Me: You know, I'll just be a rythm player and let the lead guy take this part
i practice the lead but i play rythm
Hey Karl can you do a lesson for the song "through the fire and the flames" please?
Heres your lesson: play every note very slow, then speed it up with software!
Liam Burke have you ever watched a new concert of theirs? They are amazing
Liam Burke ive seen them live mate
Except he can't sing for shit live
yeah, remind me in a couple years to revisit this...
How are you doing now?
I got a huge blister on my pinky finger practicing the first pull off part today hahaha
ok I think my time has come to learn this
I’ve been playing for six months and I was scared of this solo at first but it’s not that bad it’s just the speed

We all are🤘
@@whitestrat not everyone 😁
I’m here to learn the sequel part of the solo… I’ve been playing this song for about a year now. 🤘
better be van halen
My jaw hit the floor , might take a few years but im not stopping until my fingers are bleeding playing this solo
Pretty advanced stuff... But a good lesson to improve skill on the way you play heavy Minor scales. The structure isn't that hard, but it's the speed of it all that makes it complicated! ;) One hour of MOP Practice, and my fingers hurt like crazy! XD
I know have the solo down, just gotta get it up to speed, Wayy more practice, thanks Carl🤘🏻
Don't even own a guitar, but man, this already seems so much easier than it sounds after the video
Yes but when your fingers are stupid it doesn’t matter how easy it seems in theory
thank you✋✋
try plaing the tremolo part on 16th fret on 2 string maybe instead of 4 and see if that helps. Thanks for the lesson
I have a telecaster but want a new guitar to practice metal and speed stuff but couldn’t justify the purchase.
I’m learning this song for justification. I’ll get that guitar when I can play the full song.
For the harmonic that you whammy up, don’t do the 4th fret of the b string, use the 2.6 harmonic (play around between the 2nd and 3rd fret) it sounds way closer to the recording.
How long realistically does it take on average for an experienced player to learn something like this?
Experienced player maybe not even a week
Here's a tip...the only thing intimidating in this solo is the quick lick (hehe that rhymes) so modify it....do the pull off and play the 13, 12, 13 on the B string without again playing the 12 on the E....then it becomes really easy and I am pretty sure you will not know the difference whilst hearing...slowly add the E note...doing that I can play it on a strat....i learnt the solo in a day and I have only been playing for like 2 years...but most of all don't give up it isn't that tough...good luck!
I have started to practise this
Thank you Very much 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
I’m gna learn this solo by the end of the week I bought my first guitar 3 weeks ago
“My whammy bar doesn’t go up as much as his” *looks at my strat’s whammy bar* maybe I should get a floating bridge guitar
Would really love a Stop this Train or Slow Dancing in a Burning Room (John Mayer) guitar lesson!
Yeah right. Maybe in 5 years.
+Jesus Christ why? you are jesus christ
Bro7Games Not even Jesus can play this
hey 2 years later can u play it
Well, this is a 2 year old comment, so now you have only 3 more years
3...(impact)...year's to go.😎
I'm really impressed with myself that I can do the beginning part of this solo after barely 3 years of playing guitar, but I don't have a whammy bar, do you have any idea how to play those tremolo bar parts without one?
Pinch harmonics and bend the shit out of the strings
full bend 22 or 24 fret
thanks so much,i am just a kid so it was tough but after a few days got it down, thanks.
On the first part of the solo, I find it much easier to bar the 12th instead of jumping from first to second string... My fingers just aren't fast enough for that yet 🤙
I tried that at first too, but have switched to hitting individual strings/frets and find that my speed is increasing quickly. I've been using a metronome for this opening riff. I'm not at 230 BPM yet, but getting there.
It's hell of a work on acoustic
4 months into guitar but must take a 3 month break, will try to practice somehow, even tho probably impossible, dad took my guitars away to study.
once I'll be done ill be trying to learn this song, will update every day until i will be able to play it.
So the first lick pissed me off, like a lot, however I just barred my index across twelve on b and high e and never moved it. Made it a little easier I guess
Been playing for one year, went to this today and learned it in about 20 min lol
To get the harmonic, I do a pinch harmonic on the 7th fret of the G and I bend the note, and for the second note I just bend harder. Sounds almost the same as what Kirk is doing. More so than a lot of the lessons I see. If you do it in the right position, it should sound the same pitch. Just mess around with it until you find the sweet spot.
For Chrissy ✊
I actually never liked this solo but here I am trying to learn it
Thank u for everything you are the best👍
