Everyone's talking about how Davesprite looks like the sassy gay friend while I'm sitting here thinking about how much Davesprite probably messed with Dave, I mean c'mon do you really think Davesprite is going to not mess with Dave? He probably gives Dave wrong directions all the time and like, a hour later, says "Was it the right instead of the left?" just to fucking mess with him.
It looks to me more like Davesprite broke one of his wings before and even though it's healed by now, he is still trying to making Dave carry him around. Davesprite: "C'mon, it's just a couple miles ahead." Dave: "Ya know what? No. Just... just no. I've had enough of this, you can crawl there for all I care." Dave: *drops Davesprite and walks away* Davesprite: "........He lasted longer than I thought he would."

Other characters see him as lesser than the 'real' dave and he never wanted anything more than to help dave(or I guess himself) and then be with his friends, but everyone alienated him and some even hated him. He grows noticeably depressed about this and actually leaves everyone at one point because he's tired. Tired of stress and tired of being disrespected. Some characters would do more than just passively leaves, but that's all he does. I think he's a great character.
edit more spoilers: just read more into act 6, he comes back but only because he knew alot of important things were happening and didn't want to not even be a part of those events but who can blame him for that?

I'm a little late, but nobody should be going into the comments of Homestuck videos before finishing the comic. Of course there's going to be spoilers because this is a discussion zone.
everyone acts like this song is just funky and rad sounding, but i feel like they're totally missing its entire tone. yeah, the song is clearly meant to sound funky and befitting of a "coolkid" like any version of dave, the "rad 90s" genesis soundfont kinda drives it in, but there's just such an underlying tone of... _sadness_ to it. it just sounds almost despairing at bits, i can't put my finger on it, but parts like even the little bit where it "stops" at 0:21 and the entire atomyk ebonpyre bit at 0:43, as well as the ending just sound almost desperate or sad to me. and i think it fits the character who at first looks and acts like some cool, shade-wearing badass, but on the inside pretty much feels like nothing but a sad, shitty second-rate version of someone else, who has such immense self-loathing that they can't even stand to have people they love be around them because they just feel like they're giving them a disappointment when they deserve better. ...davesprite really does deserve all of the hugs, doesn't he?
this is pretty much exactly why this is, even after over a year of constantly listening to it, my favorite song both from homestuck and by toby fox himself. i'm a sucker for genesis-style music, for one, but having a song sound so "cool" yet also so bitter at the same time is something i honestly don't know if i can recount other instances of. it's like the audible personification of someone who wears some facade and acts as if they somehow think they're cool or smooth, but underneath, they're pretty much a sad, broken mess. i find that both _immensely_ relatable, far moreso now than when i first "fell in love" with the song, to the point where i honestly have grown to associate it with myself, and incredibly amazing that it conveys something like that, not only for being a unique thing for an instrumental song to do, but because it's so "different" to begin with. i know i might not have needed two comments for this, buuuuut adding more to the original comment kinda ruins the structure of it entirely. but this is kind of a song i've grown to love a lot, as what i just said probably makes abundantly clear, and i guess when it holds a "special place" to me it's hard not to ramble on about it.

First off, I’m late Second, this song makes my OTP davejade seem canon even though it’s not Third, I didn’t even know Davesprite was a hated character until I read the comments Davesprite is one of my favorite characters especially when he become Davepetasprite. I feel like him and Jade had unhappy endings. Though he never outright stated he had feelings for her (that I remember) he still showed affection towards Jade when he dated her during the three year travel period and then kissed her as a way of saying goodbye before waking her up. He probably knew he didn’t have a future with Jade which is probably one of the reasons or the very reason he left her in the first place. He did know, though, that she at least had a chance with the alpha Dave who he (again it isn’t stated but it’s very likely) compared himself to constantly. He did say Jade would be better off with Dave and he could make her happy. When Grimbark Jade reveals her feelings to Dave, he seems shocked that he broke her heart but upset when he finds out it was Davesprite. I think it’s because as much as he feels weird about the situation, Davesprite is still a version of him, one that actually was him in a doomed timeline but became a sprite. But as much as he wants the old Jade back (leaving a note for her saying he missed her), it is canon that he shares a relationship with Karkat. Some theorize that while Davekat is canon, Davejadekat is also canon but many have said it was not actually canon according to Hussie (creator of Homestuck). So both Jade and Dave(peta)sprite are alone in terms of a relationship, which is something I see as very sad. Jade became my favorite Homestuck character and Davejade my OTP but Davesprite came along and I quickly shipped that to be disappointed in the end. Sorry this was long, I just needed to get this out. I love this song and I love Homestuck but it gets heartbreaking so if you aren’t finished yet, prepare yourselves.

Second, this song makes my OTP davejade seem canon even though it’s not
Third, I didn’t even know Davesprite was a hated character until I read the comments
Davesprite is one of my favorite characters especially when he become Davepetasprite. I feel like him and Jade had unhappy endings. Though he never outright stated he had feelings for her (that I remember) he still showed affection towards Jade when he dated her during the three year travel period and then kissed her as a way of saying goodbye before waking her up. He probably knew he didn’t have a future with Jade which is probably one of the reasons or the very reason he left her in the first place. He did know, though, that she at least had a chance with the alpha Dave who he (again it isn’t stated but it’s very likely) compared himself to constantly. He did say Jade would be better off with Dave and he could make her happy.
When Grimbark Jade reveals her feelings to Dave, he seems shocked that he broke her heart but upset when he finds out it was Davesprite. I think it’s because as much as he feels weird about the situation, Davesprite is still a version of him, one that actually was him in a doomed timeline but became a sprite. But as much as he wants the old Jade back (leaving a note for her saying he missed her), it is canon that he shares a relationship with Karkat. Some theorize that while Davekat is canon, Davejadekat is also canon but many have said it was not actually canon according to Hussie (creator of Homestuck).
So both Jade and Dave(peta)sprite are alone in terms of a relationship, which is something I see as very sad. Jade became my favorite Homestuck character and Davejade my OTP but Davesprite came along and I quickly shipped that to be disappointed in the end.
Sorry this was long, I just needed to get this out. I love this song and I love Homestuck but it gets heartbreaking so if you aren’t finished yet, prepare yourselves.
