The oppressed, once freed, are apt to quickly forget how it felt to be oppressed, and turn on the former oppressor, becoming the new oppressor. It's difficult to forgive, impossible to forget, but absolutely crucial to do both.

So much respect for Mr. Peterson. However I am a female in a senior executive position, leading technical teams within a software company in FinTech. I don't work 70 hours a week and I believe firmly that quality of work is what is key - not quantity. Effective leadership does not equate to a loss of work life balance. Of the four IT Service delivery teams I lead - 98% of teams are male - and I have no hostility from them whatsoever. I am not that special actually, my point is that it is possible for women to lead effectively without compromising their work life balance - or having hostility from the teams (male) they lead. I am one of many women I am sure...

There is much to question concerning her claim. What, precisely, is your senior executive position? Are you leading the day to day activities? Or simply a weekly status taker/powerpoint slide maker? What is the period of performance on a given project? It's cost structure? It's profit margin? It's risk profile? How many project tasks are there? How many task dependencies, float, critical path logistics? What constitutes customer acceptance, quality, payment? How many technical requirements are there? Do you work for a company that has female management quotas? Did you get your position by filling such quotas? I worked for many "senior" execs who rarely worked 40 hours and had a wonderfully balanced life; and did so off the backs of their project managers who could not possibly do their jobs in 40 hours -- or sometimes in 70 hours. This is not to question Tasil Last's credibility, but I have only ever heard the "work smarter, not harder" platitude from folks who never had to actually ... work harder.

To be quite frank I feel very sad by this and just realised I already live in a very liberated environment. I get the points he was trying to make, but let me speak honestly from a woman‘s personal perspective and experience: I work in a tech company and I wish to get in a higher position by time, but not to steel power! That‘s never what my motivation was. I rather want to be able to execute the job I love and challenge myself. I believe I can be a very good team leader because of my qualities, which I wouldn’t define as feminine nor masculine but just emphatic and analytical, which I have gathered throughout many life lessons and experiences, where I had to reflect on myself as a HUMAN. If you have to choose between a career and a family it will always be a challenge for men and woman. My ideal is to have a partner which I can talk things out with and just see whatever fits our life‘s state. I still can’t believe people have to separate between woman and men so much. It‘s a shared decision and not about providing or any of that power issue....or at least it should be in my believe.

When I look around I see so many areas in which women have power. I can't fathom why the main emphasis on equality is more centred on the workforce in most discussion. Take the home example, there is a huge assymetry, women hold lots of power, we don't consider it because it tends to not be measureable materially. Characters are formed in the home, order starts there, psycholoical development which goes with nutrition and a careful monitoring of developing minds of the young.
In the fight for equality, aren't we to a certain extent building and tearing at the same time. Because if the home is left unattended then how is the foundation of society laid?
I fail to see how that role is inferior.

Women operating with male levels of competitiveness if opposed to their cultural programming does suggest that masculine virtues aren't totally a conspiracy. It does imply aggression, competition as natural traits. And a corporate role is a limited version of this. there's no shortage of women who voluntarily participate in contact sports, even when there are minimal supporters, no financial incentives and risk of serious injury. But discussing it in terms of women wanting to have it all might seem limited. I don't not want to have it all. I think there's a way to talk about this fairly rather than with some sense of being a gotcha for feminists.

    • @ergotoxicosis
      @ergotoxicosis 6 років тому +8

Or maybe it's archaic to suggest that traits like aggression and competitiveness are more inherently male than female, especially considering the aggression and competitiveness of females of other species compared to their male counterparts. Mama bears are the most dangerous. Aggression can be just as inherently female as male, and while my example is a result of maternal instinct, keep in mind that if I am to draw an accurate line of comparison, I have to work with what I'm given, and as far as I know, mama bears don't apply for corporate positions.

Not sure you are disagreeing. Increased opportunities and less requirement to adhere to gendered norms means increased aggression. Not being familiar with bears, I'd point to Elizabeth Lambert as an illustration of female aggression. She is (or was) a soccer player who seemed to confuse soccer and UFC. The university she represented reportedly made her get psychiatric help after multiple instances of striking and throwing an opponent to the ground by the ponytail in a single match.

About 10 % of women are exposed to more testosterone in their mothers' womb. These women gave more masculine brains and leadership qualities. The problem is that they set the agenda for other women to follow and look down on women who have more feminized brains. Just because you have more masculine traits doesn't make you superior.

The public sphere should mimic the natural world and as well our own conscious constructions. The more you empower women in the symbolic sense, the more powerful they can become on the mundane level. “You should listen to your mother” is echoed by women in positions of authority elsewhere. It creates a constellation deeply imprinted in the human mind that their mother as a woman is powerful because as you can see, women can conduct power. Of course problems arise but the idea is sound. The problems have to do with materialism, greed, chaotic minds, pain…

Women want children and careers. Thank God they can have both. I don’t think it has anything to do with the patriarchy. Women want to feel fulfilled independently. Not just by having children but by doing something for themselves. Family is important but women are individuals who want to feel fulfilled in some way. This is why they do better at school and become lawyers and doctors. They want to create something for themselves indiependantly. Many women are successful professionally and have a family. I have a problem with Jordan because he looked at lawyer women in law firms and uses that example every time. No one truly understands what it is to be a women in this world unless you are one. Enough said. This is the problem with sociologists and psychologists, they think they can answer everything with data. Sometimes you just cant

Bishal Adhikary not true, there are sacrifices that are made regardless if you are a working women or not. But there are plenty of women. Who have careers that raise good children. You sound like children are absurd or neglected because the mother works. It’s 2020 most households have two working adults in them. Mom guilt is real, I’m not denying that but like every decision in life there is a cost. If the mother stays home, it costs her her independence and her ability to make something of herself. It’s a weird feeling that all women have. Of course you want a family but you also want something of your own. Men don’t struggle with the guilt because they have always been able to have a career without guilt. It’s a difficult situation but women deserve independent fulfillment and the feeling of autonomy and a lot of the time they don’t feel that if they are just staying at home and taking care of children

I have watched a lot of Jordan Peterson and like him, but let us remember that he is a man of a certain generation talking about young women as if they are all 19-year-old, privileged students lacking life experience and knowledge of their ancestors.
Some of his INTERPRETATIONS REFLECT THE COLONIZER. In another video he talked about the dragon from a colonial (versus indigenous) perspective. Indigenous people understand hierarchy just like him, but their interpretation of the dragon differs. The dragon is a woman, more precisely the earth herself, the ground on which we stand, the integrated response, our fears, our shadow. The only sustainable way to respond is through acknowledgement and respect. The fear should not elicit a kill and cut into pieces response. The treasure she holds is peace and plenty.
Peterson’s INTERPRETATIONS ARE INCOMPLETE, and he is influencing the men who make themselves available to women today. I think the men are better for it (and they certainly need some guidance), but will they try to tell their partners that having a career isn’t realistic? They need to look beyond Peterson for interpretation and uplift the dreams of women in their life.
What does Jordan Peterson have to say about the many American who choose to have children without the accompaniment of a man? Why does he FAIL TO DEFINE career work vs job work (does it come down to hours and predictable schedules or meaning itself?) He said in another video that women can’t have careers while raising families. Why is it not the same for men, partnered or single?
There are so many women who live autonomously, managing careers and families. Peterson LOSES A LITTLE CREDIBILITY with them, an increasing population. As a single mother and the sole provider for my child, I am here to say women are stronger than men when they start off independent and career focused. We go through hell with men in our 20s (who actually grow up in a male adolescent culture, not female adolescent culture), but we still come out with families and meaningful careers, businesses and nonprofits. Peterson should stick to guiding the boys.
Men and women should be allowed to step back into careers after time off with family. The new economy will come around to facilitating men and women as equals in this way. Not every career is as cut throat as his law profession example. He’s right that mothers can’t have 80 hour per week work obligations.
If Peterson want to say that HE’S IN THE BUSINESS OF HUMAN TRANSFORMATION, let’s not assume that humans can’t create more sex equity systems for the purpose of generating more PEACE between the sexes and in families. He implies that women should sacrifice where men don’t. Well, women like me aren’t looking for a man like Peterson, but a man who will SACRIFICE EQUALLY. He is rare indeed, but if you’re willing to go without, you could have stability, happy children and meaningful work. That’s better than a misogynist man and NO WORLD OF YOUR OWN.
I don’t know too many moms who want to be a mom 100% of the time. Work is a relief from children and children are a relief from work. It’s best this way. It’s traditional, as much as women are immersed in work and children.
WOMEN ARE HUMAN BEINGS WITH A MULTITUDE OF NEEDS, including social and intellectual. WHEN THE BREADTH AND DEPTH OF OUR NEEDS ARE FULLFILLED, WE’LL BE BETTER MOTHERS.
Here, you heard it from a woman - 37, feminist, American, single mother and sole provider, on the hero’s (not heroine’s) journey.

Honestly, some of the stuff he says sounds convincing but when you look into it...it lacks credibility.. I mean , him talking about how women are appreciated for being competitive and such is a fascinating point because men are also eulogized when they partake in traditionally feminine activities- cooking , nurturing etc. It is out of the norm and is thus appreciated.
However, how much does that translate to real life is the question? I believe it is the internet that appreciates that
In my country, a research should that 7 out of 10 companies weren't ready to hire women.
Where I am from , either the woman is supposed to unconditionally offer herself to the well being of the husband( prevalant among the uneducated people ) or the urban moms need to manage work and cooking and nurturing.

Him talking about how women are rewared for their competitive yearning was interesting to me. In the country where I live , women are expected to either take care of their young ones ( which any person - man or woman must ) and are treated as solely responsible for them and if they still work alongside all that , they are still expected to put their children above it all , something which is not expected from men. Even if the woman works , she is expected to take care of her family but these don't apply to men.
Here , women are curtailed from education and following their ambitions by their families and society.
However, that being said , we have made progress. We are working on it. Women do have rights. These are some internalized norms that can be found in many places
Basically, serve your family to the moon and back or
Do a job + serve your family...which can be found in some modern areas.

This thinking is part of the problem. Inclusion is an artificial construct but life doesn't reflect this b/c its inherently competitive. Someone wins b/c of someone else's loss. You really see this play out in the corporate world. As you go up the job hierarchy there's less and less positions b/c of competition. Women are very uncomfortable with this b/c it goes against their psyche which is primed towards inclusion and making sure "everyone wins." Its really why you see a shift in happiness when a woman hits her late 20s. Its at this point that she realizes that the prospect of working for several decades under increased competition and a greater demand on her time isn't worth it despite the fact that her earnings have increased. This is compounded by the biological desire to start having children. Its at this age that women start to subjectively become unhappy which gets worse over time the longer she stays single...

Pseudonymous Being How do you know? The minority of women wanted "rights". This idea of being equal was thrust onto women. A lot of women have an innate feeling of wanting to do the things the original commenter said but don't want to admit it because feminism

When Mohammad prophet had heard that Persia is ruled by a queen at that time , said “Never will succeed such a nation as makes a woman their ruler." However, he didn’t exclude women from being leaders in other aspects of life.

Women shouldn't be in politics. Talk about 'equality of opportunity' all you like, but men MUST run society. Patriarchy is actually a good thing.

Camila, You're part of the problem. Men preserve civilisation, women capitulate to new ideas. The ancients warned against this and now we're learning the hard way.

Arguing with holes: Women don't respond by calling someone a 'faggot' or some other quick insult. They instead "argue with holes" to insult, like saying "you're just saying that because you [don't have access to a female hole]" or "that's why you [don't have access to a female hole]". It proves the notion that women see themselves as nothing more than holes to fill penises, so a man not willing to grant them that role will somehow be opposed to filling holes.

If an individual has merit they should do the job. A competent female in politics can still adhere to patriarchal traits.
