Retired police officer here- it's even more strange than you realize. When we tow a vehicle- impounding it- we have to check the entire vehicle and INVENTORY ALL THE CONTENTS *BEFORE* we move it!!!
I think the reason they didn't check the car, was because they thought James was either the killer, or he was kidnapped (most likely the first). The murder was done by shooting and the killer didn't bother to hide or clean up Dana's body, so they probably found it strange why James' body was missing, and assumed he wasn't killed. That's why they focused more on the runaway car.
@@stefanijovita1640it doesn't matter what they thought because they should have done an inventory search prior to moving the car. They do that because when they exchange custody of the vehicle they don't want to be liable for any items that might be claimed to be missing. The tow company does one as well but they may have set it aside because it was evidence or couldn't get to it but they should have never accepted custody without looking at it first I would imagine.
I was literally just thinking this, the whole time people are pointing fingers at her and are calling her names, the real culprit(her so called boyfriend) decides to leave her in the country and try to act like he's living a normal life, while she got fired from her job,and can't even contact anyone, plus she's been put on house arrest all because of her insane bf wanting "revenge" on someone
She asked for it because based on locals who knew her personally she did a lot of people dirty on her own and when she meet him she looked past the fact that he was a criminal because the lifestyle he was providing. She knew he was a shitty person and didn’t think twice about leaving him. She’s no victim.

Crazy thing is, she wasn't necessarily wrong about some of the stuff she said. Now I enjoy a soft life that I love and wish I would've learned better sooner. You have to be smart though. There are PLENTY of men who will treat you like a princess and not expect you to do crime with them! REAL protectors and providers do exist, this girl just made BAD decisions. Soon as she saw what kind of mess he was into she should have cut and run! More fish in the sea. Also this is not taking shots at women who like to pay all the bills or do 50/50 or whatever. I hope everyone gets the relationship that works for them. Not everyone wants the same thing. I'm just saying for the ladies who do want that, don't think that you have to be with a shitty guy like this. You CAN have it all with a good guy. Raising standards is not the problem here.
While I agree he's the true monster, he didn't, "screw up her life", by himself. She chose, (as far as we are aware), to help a known murderer. She also screwed up her own life. We need to remind ourselves that personal responsibility and accountability are important in our lives. We women aren't helpless. She had a choice, and she made it.
@@ricedratiny7796they were still murdered. murder is murder. and it doesn't change the fact that the victims have families that care about them and are hurting
So I don’t have experience in forensics or crime scene investigation, but I can speak on what Ive learned in law classes. This wasn’t a house search for a crime at first, It was a wellness check. When it comes to court, there has to be specific documentation that everything acquired through a search warrant pertains to the case and only that case. So for example, if you’re going into a house to search for a drug related crime, but you happen to find tons of stolen goods, you can’t use the stolen goods against them and turn it into a theft case because the warrant doesn’t state you were there to search for stolen goods you were there to search for drugs and only drugs. So the only reason I can think of as to why they wouldn’t have thoroughly search the car is if they really wanted to protect themselves and the integrity of the case since they knew at this point they entirely had a murder case. They probably wanted to obtain a warrant, which granted probably wouldn’t have taken very long, before they found anything completely groundbreaking. If they didn’t have the documentation that the evidence was acquired 100% legally and with prior authorization, it could be likely that a lot of what they happened upon could’ve been thrown out in court. Especially since they found drugs and a body (2 potentially separate crimes) they more than likely wanted to get authorization on both counts just to make sure that all evidence found from that point forward would no doubt be allowed to be used in court.
How was it a wellness check? When the neighbor called saying he seen blood on the wall and the house was ransacked? Nobody knew James was missing yet so nobody called for a wellness check.
I hate that people are more or less trying to absolve her of all responsibility and was just "doing whatever her boyfriend told her". She's a grown woman and can say no to something unhinged like cleaning up a murder that happened in her own house and not calling the police on her boyfriend (if that's what happened). Society needs to stop babying these influencers and treating them like toddlers.
Idk, if I was in that situation I would def say yes out of fear, however I would have ran when I went to the store to get supplies and called the police, so she was probably super scared but still needs to be held accountable though she’s not as accountable as her bf

ABOUT THE CAR: TX has very strict laws about warrants. A warrant to search a house doesn't include an attached garage, AND even if it does list the garage, they also must specifically list each vehicle and cargo area. Cars are NOT easier to get probable cause and in the state of TX a car is considered a separate residence. They more than likely TOWED the car, because they wouldn't have had permission to get in it. It is a lot of red tape, but the investigators will wait (particularly if they already have a body and things to be looking into) because the one time they rush it will be the one time the judge throws out the search at trial because you didn't dot all your I's.
Yes! Especially because at the time, they didn’t know if James was the killer for his friend, since they couldn’t find him and the friend’s car was taken. Warrants do not encompass one whole thing, like a house. If you find a phone or laptop in the house then you’ll probably need another warrant for that electronic. If officers do not follow everything in a specific way, especially in a murder case, important things may get thrown out at trial because it “wasn’t correctly done.”
Also, the Supreme Court does not recognize any state with a "murder" clause related to the 4th Amendment. If the car was not included in the original search warrant then they could not search it unless they had probable cause they thought a person was in it and thought to be in trouble. (i.e. Blood on car, noises coming from car) they would have to get a seperate search warrant for that car and it could take days because they would have to prove why they needed it since it wasn't in the original. This is my knowledge based on my state's law, Ohio, but would assume it is the same or more difficult process in Texas. And also with discussions I've had with my brother who is an officer.
Theoretically, perhaps. I've been in and all around TX my whole life, I would disagree. I have seen cops manifest reasons to search ANYTHING. Judges submitting to (or straight up overlooking) LE gross discretions. The corruption is still deep, many of us still feel it can resemble the old wild West. They do what they want to do bc they can. They also don't do soooo much that they are supposed to it's not always helpful to call police. Also the whole warrant situation is an unjust mess. The worst part many of us struggle with is it's such an admirable career that when we see these disgusting display of indifference to the very community they "serve" it just divides people more. As much as my state has grown, I can't say it's for the best. Hopefully my fellow Texans don't forget to Vote for TEXAS in a few months! 💙✌🏽🤠🇨🇱

Hi Stephanie, I don't know if this is the right place to post this but I have a case suggestion. Some days ago in Greece a man named Antonis Karyotis was literally pushed off the boarding ramp by the ferry crew at the port Piraeus, right in front of hundreds of people. There are CCTV videos, videos taken from other passengers and tons of witnesses. The entire country is devastated, he was impaired too. He was so loved by his community, and his family is financially struggling now too. I really love your true crime videos, you are so compassionate yet your storytelling is so engaging :D have a nice day, thank you!!
Hey Stephanie! For the forensics team to find James' body in the trunk later is actually pretty fast. You have to have a warrant in certain states for other property outside of the home. So a car is technically outside of the house, which normally a judge accepts rather quickly. However, forensics teams are extremely small like maybe 1 team lead and two other people to prevent as much cross contamination as possible (movies and shows do not depict this accurately). It takes longer because the priority for forensics is the house because they have the first visual victim found and an abundance of relevant evidence (which is a higher priority, unless there was a trail of blood leading to the boot of the Pruis). The team has to go through multiple scenarios to swab potential items and less relevant items throughout the home first. Because the money was still in the freezer and the drugs were in the house the forensics teams had to swab any item that could relate to a drug sale gone bad or any other scenario items for evidence. Then the same team will go through the vehicle after they are done in the home. This is to have less people being involved with the case, which could contaminate evidence, which if proven "too contaminated or tempered" would have it thrown out in trial. Which would give less leverage to the SP to prove beyond a reasonable doubt and to get the harshest punishment possible. My theory of what happened: I believed James owed Poly the $40,000 because that would make sense why Dana came down with $36,000 from his dispensary in Oregon and 125 lb of weed and 40lbs of the hash oil. I think at that point James had a deadline to give Poly the money so James hit up Dana asking for help, so Dana pulled out $36,000 and weed to flip so that they could make up the rest with interest for Poly. So poly made James meet up with him at Kathy's place (because to him she could be dispensable or won't say anything because she benefits from his money) and said he better have the money. James shows up without the money but tells Poly that his boy Dana brought down the 36 and the drugs to flip to give to poly with interest. Now Poly was probably inpatient and killed James and went to James' house to kill Dana because Dana would know that James went to meet up with Poly and would snitch, so they did that purely for not getting caught, not the cash. Why they didn't take the money: And the reason why they couldn't take the money is because in Oregon marijuana dispensaries are legal, so Dana most likely has a business account at the bank. So Dana most likely took the 36 from the business account (each bill has a serial number on it that the bank reports in its system automatically so it would be traceable, which would confirm that Poly killed James. Show less
not taking the money is even more of a slap in the face to the victims. they really died for no reason... i wonder if kathy's bf just intended to kill both of them from the start, and the owed money was just a lure.

Iodine is not a cleaning product! It is usually used in a diluted form to ensure that cuts, grazes or scratches don't get infected. It is sometimes used as a throat gargle to try to strip out any infectious bacteria or mucus. Iodine is a dark brown to black before it is diluted and has an orange colour once it is diluted. You would never use it to clean anything as it has an incredible ability to stain anything and everything!
It could have been used to wipe off non-absorbent materials (eg. metal, non-porous ceramics, glass…) in order to disinfect them… or she was unfamiliar with it and thought it was similar to peroxide (i.e. not realizing how to use it)???
We use it to clean the udders of dairy cows before milking… and it does not stain the ceramic parlour walls or the cement floors when washed off without too much delay.

@itstherileyquinn 9 days ago She didn't actually clean the crime scene. You can look through the public court records. I love MissMangoButt but she left out a LOT of details. Kathy was not directly involved in ANY of these crimes-only circumstantially. This is proven in public court records. Her boyfriend gave her evidence he cleaned to store after he committed the murder-she had no idea these random items he was giving her had anything to do with a crime scene. THIS is the 'hiding blood evidence'. There is no evidence of her ever at, or entering, either of the crime scenes. No DNA, no CCTV, nothing. Meanwhile, both of the murderers were seen at each of the crime scenes.
Weird that she took a whole bottle of multipurpose cleaner to a club. If she is such a “cleaning freak” she would have taken some sanitizer wipes and it’s also easy to fit in a purse. This cleaning thing could definitely be a cover up. Also never seen people use iodine to clean their house. It’s a product that is usually used in medical settings for disinfecting the skin during pre-op.
Iodine is not normally used as a cleaner for surfaces. It contains a dye and is used mainly for sterilization during medical procedures. My mom used to use it when she would cauterize my sisters G-Tube opening. Its hard to consider what it would be used for in this case. I would assume some form of torture. You could prolong infection by sterilizing instruments and contact points with iodine. Thereby keeping the victim of the torture alive for as long as possible. Other than that, I'm stumped.

If the police impound a vehicle and take it to the police station-they HAVE to search it and all compartment. It’s part of police protocol in order to create an inventory of the vehicle and everything found within it. You do not need a warrant to inspect an impounded vehicle in order to do a basic inventory-because the inventory process is not a search for evidence. It’s just holding a record of the condition of the car at the time it was obtained and impounded by the police. Anything they happen to find through this administrative process is fair game. Perhaps they were administratively delayed/backlogged in doing the entrance inventory of the vehicle.

She actually kept his identity completely private from her content because she wanted to respect his privacy as a person. She was, and continues to be, a very kind and humble person. If you knew anything about her, or did literally any research, you would know that.
@@itstherileyquinni was ready to respond “what kind of humble and kind person helps clean up a crime scene?” and then i clicked on your profile and the fact that you’ve posted several comments under this case defending this lady says enough..
@@bandmaiden You obviously have done no research and have no clue what you're talking about. You read the headline 'influencer cleans up crime scene' and ran with it. You clearly didn't even watch this video, because nowhere in the video does Stephanie talk about Kathy 'cleaning up the crime scene'. Why? Because it didn't happen. I have actually read through the public court records. There is NO physical evidence, or any evidence other than circumstantial evidence, that Kathy had anything to do with these murders. She didn't even technically 'clean up' either of the two crime scenes. Her DNA wasn't found at either crime scene, there is no footage or pictures of her at either crime scene, no texts of her even acknowledging either crime. Kathy had nothing to do with this. The ONLY thing linking her to the crime is the fact she bought cleaning supplies for her boyfriend, let her boyfriend use her garage, and let her boyfriend store some things at her apartment.
@@bandmaiden Do you even know what either crime scene looks like? I do. I saw photos and read descriptions. They were grisly-and completely intact. Nothing had been cleaned up. The reason she was charged with tampering with evidence is because her boyfriend, under false pretenses, gave evidence from the crime scene to Kathy to store in her apartment. Imagine your boyfriend asking if he could leave his computer at your house. Would your first thought be 'my boyfriend must have killed a man and now he's giving me his victims computer to store'? Obviously not.
I was a cop for twenty years. If the cops impound the car, they can search it without a warrant. It’s called a cursory search. Illegal drug dealing is no joke. Humanity is loss in this world. One time I had three people killed point blank in the back of the head over a drug deal gone bad.
So, Iodine is most commonly used for surgical purposes, cleaning areas for surgical incision. It can also be added into first aid kits. I have no idea why it would ever be considered for cleaning purposes as it looks brown but has an orange/yellow colour that tends to stain anything it comes into contact with. This is why although it can be found in Veterinary clinics it isn't used as surgical scrub, owners don't want their animals stained. so generally, Iodine is only used for human surgeries. I find this is an interesting thing to ponder, why would this be purchased?
Holy Shit! I followed her and live in the same city as her! I used to admire her for being a self-made success story. Then one day she disappeared from my fyp, and I didn’t know why. This is crazy! I guess social media never shows the whole truth of who a person is.
This is such a crazy case, love the way you tell the stories! I personally think she also needs to be held accountable for cleaning the crime scene. She didn't have any problem at all bragging about her new laptop while knowing he murdered someone. Hope the two guys get life sentences.
I don't know anything about TikTok, but if they have timers to post videos automatically when a creator wants them to go out like UA-cam does, I could easily imagine she had uploaded that video and set a timer and it went out before she had time to think about taking down videos. Otherwise, yeah, she seems pretty heartless to post something like that next day.
She didn't actually clean the crime scene.
What did the public records say about the videocalls and messages during the crime or the list on HER notes app? I’m genuinely curious because that does indicate indirect involvement vs circumstantial.
So I'm just starting the episode so I feel like I will update my comment. But at around 23:20 you and your husband were confused because they claimed "they just got a search warrant 5 days later" to search the Prius. And while it's weird, it's how it works. It doesn't matter if they are investigating a murder case in Texas or not, they are required to get a search warrant for the car. Because it's a different piece of property AND they didn't have probable cause to check the car at first....that and at the time they didn't know if the homeowner was the murderer, and if he was, his defense team could have used the whole "they illegally searched his car" defense and get everything they found in the car thrown out in terms of evidence. It's dumb....but the legal system is slow in Texas... Even more so than other states. I only know this because my adopted older sister is from Houston.
Just so you know, vietnamese people prefer calling the capital of Vietnam saigon instead of hcm city. Hcm is the name of the dictator, so it might trigger some vietnamese refugees.

Retired police officer here- it's even more strange than you realize. When we tow a vehicle- impounding it- we have to check the entire vehicle and INVENTORY ALL THE CONTENTS *BEFORE* we move it!!!
Exactly ! Imagine if the victim was still alive in there they did not even check the trunk for 5 days !!

Its so ironic she gave relationship advice just for her bf to royally screw up her life and leave her with the mess. This is crazy.
I was literally just thinking this, the whole time people are pointing fingers at her and are calling her names, the real culprit(her so called boyfriend) decides to leave her in the country and try to act like he's living a normal life, while she got fired from her job,and can't even contact anyone, plus she's been put on house arrest all because of her insane bf
wanting "revenge" on someone
She asked for it because based on locals who knew her personally she did a lot of people dirty on her own and when she meet him she looked past the fact that he was a criminal because the lifestyle he was providing. She knew he was a shitty person and didn’t think twice about leaving him. She’s no victim.
Let's be honest - most relationships women have with men require them to ego boost and center them. She was already crooked, so this gave her the additional thrill she was looking for. She is no different than most rich women married to mob boss and Holllyweirdo males
Crazy thing is, she wasn't necessarily wrong about some of the stuff she said. Before I met my husband (well technically the boyfriend before him) I attracted bums and would be putting way more into the relationship than I got out of it. I was that "Independent Strong Woman".

So Dana most likely took the 36 from the business account (each bill has a serial number on it that the bank reports in its system automatically so it would be traceable, which would confirm that Poly killed James.

not taking the money is even more of a slap in the face to the victims. they really died for no reason... i wonder if kathy's bf just intended to kill both of them from the start, and the owed money was just a lure.

It's actually insane how I had found out, one of my cousins had called me from a state away and ended up telling me the news, and the entire Vietnamese-American community knew about this case almost immediately. it immediately burst into flames and everyone was in absolute shock and disbelief.
Iodine fuming is use for developing latent fingerprints
It could have been used to wipe off non-absorbent materials (eg. metal, non-porous ceramics, glass…) in order to disinfect them… or she was unfamiliar with it and thought it was similar to peroxide (i.e. not realizing how to use it)???
We use it to clean the udders of
dairy cows before milking… and it does not stain the ceramic parlour walls or the cement floors when washed off without too much delay.
Just had an experiment in chemistry titrating ascorbic acid with Iodine, can ABSOLUTELY confirm! It stains like it’s a concentrated ink 🥲
I truly believe with her smooth brain she meant peroxide and was too uneducated to realize the difference between the two.
the one thing that's BLOWING my mind is, as an owner of a Prius myself, you can see through the trunk VERY easily, especially if you're even moderately tall. the whole hatchback of it is the rear window, even the flat, dark part above the license plate, it's a window. HOW did they not see???
YES!! Boosting this. First thing my partner said was “ALL THEY HAD TO DO IS LOOK” once you see the body you have probable cause to open the car!!!! This is insane!
Maybe just different, but a close friend of mine had a Prius for awhile in highschool but I never noticed that in hers. It looked like a normal sedan car to me. Just a Prius. Even then though it doesn’t make sense anyway to not look at the car anyway since it had been running and that’s why the neighbor called

Not all of us have the same morals and Kathy most likely doesn't mind cleaning up the crime scene since it's actually part of her business as the partner of the main suspect. She can easily wear a mask when in front if the camera but can also be a different person off cam. Nothing is what it seems. With all the messages, purchase of cleaning materials and proof that she got gifts from cleaning up the crime scene. This just reminds me of a lot of ladies that have criminal boyfriends, people that I actually personally know. It's all just business to them. Their only main rule is just never get caught.

She didn't actually clean the crime scene.
Yeah, iodine is a disinfectant but useless as a cleaner since it stains terribly. I was confused by this.
Yes, that's what I buy it (iodine) for....for medical purposes...
I thought maybe one of them was injured so she bought that, but apparently she bought it before the murder, so ?
Iodine is not normally used as a cleaner for surfaces. It contains a dye and is used mainly for sterilization during medical procedures. My mom used to use it when she would cauterize my sisters G-Tube opening. Its hard to consider what it would be used for in this case. I would assume some form of torture. You could prolong infection by sterilizing instruments and contact points with iodine. Thereby keeping the victim of the torture alive for as long as possible. Other than that, I'm stumped.
@@LKGdcyes, I had to Google and look for it in the HEB store because I was so confused. 😂

I'm dying to know if there's been any updates! I know the justice system is slow, but looking forward to a part 2 after the trial.
I dont think being involved in drugs justifies murder but i DO think that it exposes people to a shady element and heightens the risk of possible violence, robbery etc. Its not an irrelevant fact.
It’s sad that she was put in the spotlight due to the fact that she was a popular influencer, but that’s the repercussion when you present yourself/life to the world. Sending prayers and condolences for the victims and their families. I hope they receive justice.
Idk if I missed it here, but I’m from Houston, and the story I know is that they planned to rob James bc they found out somehow that he had all that money at his house. they couldn’t find the money after all. I’m pretty sure she knew what field of work her boyfriend was in, and bragging about what she had was a bonus to make money off of Tiktok videos. She knew what she said was controversial and was gonna get views.
Kathy literally never bragged about her boyfriends line of work-not personally or professionally.
So, Iodine is most commonly used for surgical purposes, cleaning areas for surgical incision. It can also be added into first aid kits. I have no idea why it would ever be considered for cleaning purposes as it looks brown but has an orange/yellow colour that tends to stain anything it comes into contact with. This is why although it can be found in Veterinary clinics it isn't used as surgical scrub, owners don't want their animals stained. so generally, Iodine is only used for human surgeries. I find this is an interesting thing to ponder, why would this be purchased?
glad they fired her.

I don't know anything about TikTok, but if they have timers to post videos automatically when a creator wants them to go out like UA-cam does, I could easily imagine she had uploaded that video and set a timer and it went out before she had time to think about taking down videos. Kathy has blood on her hands too. Hope she gets punished just as badly as her “amazing bf”
OMGGG thank you for covering this. I'm so happy that they were caught even though they tried to flee to Vietnam
