My wife of 47 years passed away 08/14/2023 and as a country drummer for 50+ years, this is the first song that came to mind to describe my devastation and sadness at her passing.
@user-fz7ng4nd1z So sorry, Ken. My wife of 51 years and I are both saying, "I hope I go first." We're desperately hoping Jesus comes for us before either of us has to suffer as you are. May He give you comfort as only He can.
joypagan When the group Shenandoah put this song out ( around 1990 or so ) , it really wasn't something at the time , that they were known for..( this more serious, almost ballad type, heartbreak, haunting type of song ) like myself, I think this song in particular, took a lot of people by surprise, caught them off guard, if you will, in showing their versatility as a band in style, down to simple song selection, and even to instrumental accountability...this song ( like many good to great songs i hear ) at the time of its release, was a " slow builder " , in that it took awhile for it to grow on everybody...but grow, it did. I took it , copied the lyrics down , and with an old acoustic guitar, had it learned it roughly 3 days, i think. The 3 part harmony, music all of it, within a week..then the following week , we had it worked into one of our sets , by then. But like you, I looked at the same line ( broke every verse down, and read it ) and thought to myself, wow...that's one hell of a line...but there are others as well..when or if you get time, go back and read it through..you'll see. I just felt like sharing that with you Joy , so thank you for bringing an old memory to the surface, once again..😊😊
This is exactly how I feel since my husband passed away. Her flawless execution of this song, with her exquisite voice had me in tears. No other artist can sing with her angelic sound.
Just beautiful music, doesn't get any better than this, REAL country music, no flashing lights, thumping beat, no smoke and pyrotechnics, pure simple country music.

The song is beautifully written and so sad, and it is sung by a lady with a voice beyond compare in this genre of music in my opinion. I think Alison’s voice is as close to perfect as one gets. Excellent performance.👍👍🇨🇦

Beautiful song performed in an inimitable way by Alison Krauss. This song is really written for her. She has the unique ability to convey a complete picture of the situation with her voice and through the movement in her voice she can portray every emotion and sensation. The sentence "I'm just a whisper of smoke" is a good example of this: you actually see a plume of smoke in the abandoned house. Truly the most beautiful voice on the planet.
We lost my father 7 years ago, and my mom still won't listen to this song. She can get through the days, but she just isn't the same, even after all this time. I miss her almost as much as I miss him. I hope you can find happiness again, and I'm terribly sorry for your loss.
What they do with this song is awesome. The vocals are haunting and she makes it sound as if its a ghost moaning in a broken home. And the harmonies accent that perfectly. I keep finding myself listening to this over and over again. Nice job Alison and Union station.
Going thru my divorce was this song. Her voice tells all and the pain one would feel. She carried me during that time with all her music. Thank you Alison

I absolutely love her voice, I lost my brother two months ago and this song reminds me of his wife now going home to an empty house. She sings so effortlessly but it hits your soul so hard.
I love the way you spoke that as to visualize it perfectly I was for a moment standing in a warm spring rain, droplets on my cheeks breathing in deeply as the notes of a mandolin faded in the distance. Simply beautiful simply put.
@Alison Krauss Allison Allison. You got to let it go hun. I told you in highschool I wasn't interested. Now I blocked you on Twitter Facebook. Please do not let me have to block you on UA-cam. Time to move on with your life young lady. Lord knows I have
Allison Krauss has the voice of an angel. That's just about the sweetest sounding, powerful, emotional and dynamic voice I have ever heard...along with my daughter, Cassidy Cronan, who most definitely has the voice of an angel-as well! Thank you, Allison, for such a great rendition!
at an antique store once I flicked a wine glass with a fingernail, and it rang, and rang, and the hair on the back of me neck stood up, and that's the experience I have listening to Allison sing.
Geez, two lines into this song tears streaming down my cheeks, sniffing, holding back full out crying. Love her introduction. If you’ve lost someone you love, and have a heart it’s going to break! Some laments tug your heartstrings rather than generate tears. This performance, this group, this song, how in the world can it get better than this? the Radman
I played the double live album that had this song on it over and over after my dad died in 2004. It allowed me to release so much mournfulness. Deep emotion sweeping over us can be directed into healing channels with music like this.
I don't pick up the mail, I don't pick up the phone, I don't answer the door, I just soon be alone I don't keep this place up, I just keep the lights down, I don't live in these rooms, I just rattled around I'm just a ghost in this house, I'm just shadow upon these walls, As quietly as a mouse, I haunt these halls, I'm just a whisper of smoke, I'm all that's left of two hearts on fire, That once burned out of control, You took my body and soul, I'm just a ghost in this house I don't care if it rains, I don't care if it's clear, I don't mind stayin' near, There's another ghost here, He sits down in your chair, And he shines with your light, And he lays down his head, On your pillow at night I'm just a ghost in this house, I'm just a shadow upon these walls, I'm living proof of the damage heartbreak does, I'm just a whisper of smoke, I'm all that's left of two hearts on fire, That once burned out of control, You took my body and soul, I'm just a ghost in this house That once burned out of control, You took my body and soul, I'm just a ghost in this house
Just amazing what comes out of her mouth when she starts to sing. And so interesting how she does nothing to perform this but to sing it and mean it. She's a real lesson in simplicity.
My husband and I have absolutely loved Alison Krauss since the first time we heard her in the 70ths! We have purchased every CD that she has put out. We just enjoy her beautiful talent so much. Have really missed her lately. Wish she would come back full force again!!!
@@liamconnolly9233 I started listening to her in '84 when she was "just" a fiddle prodigy, rarely singing lead. I can't even remember if the band she played with at Nature's Table had a name. She also did Brown Bag Lunches at Krannert Center (U of I) and sometimes I was the only one listening!
@Alison Krauss You bet. I have tried to remember what name your band used when playing at Nature's Table--before Union Station. Wasn't John Pennell the band leader?
One of the best female vocalists of this century! I don't know what note it is. I just know when she hits it something happens to my simpleton brain
Alison is just pure perfection! Her and Union Station are perfection in music and there is just no one like them anywhere!
One of my very FAVORITES! Allison has the most FORELORN, BEAUTIFUL VOICES!
An angel sent to Earth to sing.
@Alison Krauss Certainly by all means
Una voce angelica e una dolcezza infinita
I come on youtube looking for a great song by Alison Krauss, and man I found it...
Whenever you hear Alison Krauss, it is like breathing air after a spring rain!
Sasscat and song birds sing back to her.
+Stephen Taylor most under rated artist ever
+James Ward couldn't agree more
I love the way you spoke that as to visualize it perfectly I was for a moment standing in a warm spring rain, droplets on my cheeks breathing in deeply as the notes of a mandolin faded in the distance. Simply beautiful simply put.
Sasscat unless you're in Houston, TX... BUT I know exactly what you're saying. i agree.
FLAWLESS. All that needs to be Said. She is the Definition of REAL Music.
Best voice of all time.
absolutely
Neil, you are so right. I have heard, and love, some truly wonderful women, but in my opinion Alison is the best that ever came along.
I have to agree. Once you have listened to her you are under the most overwhelming spell. She has the voice of an angel and it is God given.
@Alison Krauss Allison Allison. You got to let it go hun. I told you in highschool I wasn't interested. Now I blocked you on Twitter Facebook. Please do not let me have to block you on UA-cam. Time to move on with your life young lady. Lord knows I have
@@theunknown4570 that is not the real Alison krauss. It is a scammer.
I could listen to her sing all day... Best version!
This is a song about loss...Achingly interpreted by Allison's incredible voice.
Such a gorgeous voice, gave me chills. She uses her voice better than I've ever hear her in other songs of hers.
so much talent in one place.... with no ego. Just a love for the craft.
Exactly.
Real talent speaks for itself. No attitude, booty shaking or cleavage necessary.
I love this song! It so beautiful when you are going through grief.
not a day goes by i dont think of my husband, gone 2 years now, yet i feel him in our house, guiding me and oh i wish I could see this ghost,
Alison Krauss is simply the best!
Geez, two lines into this song tears streaming down my cheeks, sniffing, holding back full out crying. Love her introduction. If you’ve lost someone you love, and have a heart it’s going to break!
Lost my brother and niece both murdered in Tucson in 2000. Feels like was yesterday, it’s 2020. She was 19, he was 55. Google: “The Story of the murder of Msgt Daniel Walker and Kara Walker.” 💔
Thank you for posting this poignant beauty.
And now, 26 Grammys. Six more and she will own more Grammys than any other person.
Just heard this on K95.5 Big Country Old Gospel Sunday Morning Music. LAST Morning show for this yr 2020. The HOLY GHOST was riding w/ me. This song is so FITTING for 2020. Life Gurantees=GOD IS ALIVE/GOD NEVER EVER ever ever LEAVES US ALONE! Pray, speak as it is so & LIVE LIFE! BOLDLY SPEAK LIFE! AMEN! P.S. If God is your Daddy then YOU have the SAME AUTHORITY as Big Ol Dad! LOVE YA'LL my Siblings!
I remember a fellow artist (might have been Lee Ann Womak) talking about her music and saying "If you could hear an angel in Heaven sing - they would sound like Allison Krauss." So very true - such a pure voice.
Thank you so much for your unwavering Love ❤️, where are you from?
Some laments tug your heartstrings rather than generate tears. This performance, this group, this song, how in the world can it get better than this? the Radman
amen
@Alison Krauss Sorry, I have to pass- too dangerous. Thrilled, though. the Radman
Insane, over the top harmonies swept up on the wings of one beautifully written melody, sung by a songbird named Allison. Rare, one-of-a-kind talent.
Such a beautiful song. Thank God for this beautiful music.
I played the double live album that had this song on it over and over after my dad died in 2004. It allowed me to release so much mournfulness. Deep emotion sweeping over us can be directed into healing channels with music like this.
You nailed it! August, 2023 5:00 pm
She's got a voice like an angel. One of the greatest singers I've ever heard.
I love her singing! Pure Raw Talent! It doesn't get any Better!!!
Love you Allison !!! Your the best !!!!!
I don't pick up the mail,
I don't pick up the phone,
I don't answer the door,
I just soon be alone
I don't keep this place up,
I just keep the lights down,
I don't live in these rooms,
I just rattled around
I'm just a ghost in this house,
I'm just shadow upon these walls,
As quietly as a mouse,
I haunt these halls,
I'm just a whisper of smoke,
I'm all that's left of two hearts on fire,
That once burned out of control,
You took my body and soul,
I'm just a ghost in this house
I don't care if it rains,
I don't care if it's clear,
I don't mind stayin' near,
There's another ghost here,
He sits down in your chair,
And he shines with your light,
And he lays down his head,
On your pillow at night
I'm just a ghost in this house,
I'm just a shadow upon these walls,
I'm living proof of the damage heartbreak does,
I'm just a whisper of smoke,
I'm all that's left of two hearts on fire,
That once burned out of control,
You took my body and soul,
I'm just a ghost in this house
That once burned out of control,
You took my body and soul,
I'm just a ghost in this house
Perfectly, poignantly, heartbreaking

Mon Dieu quelle belle voix, quand elle parle c'est tout doux, merci Alison. ❤❤❤🎉🎉
She truley has the voice of an angel. Please bring her back!!!!
Alison was born in 1971? I'm sure you mean the late 80's but she is just magic!!!
And very good looking also....;-)
Country music is not very appreciated here in the Netherlands anymore, but i am one of the biggest fans of that kind of music.
Have been, and always will be. I hope someday it will be appreciated here again, like it should be...
She's amazing , beautiful and so, so awesome !!! That voice is phenomena........NO, ITS........HAUNTING ⚠️
Alison will go and see other artists play. I think that’s what keeps her humble.
Her voice is just beautiful!!!!
This SONG,,,you really HAVE to be THERE, in that hollow place, to truly FEEL and UNDERSTAND it. Anyone whose lost someone that they love, has LIVED this song.
Just adore Alison & Union Station. The talent here is just fantastic, they make every song very special. Alison's voice is superb, and she's not too rough on the fiddle, either !
Yep! Illinois State Fiddle Champion at the age of 12.

Thanks for the info - I didn't know that. Mind you, the rest of the band are unsurpassable too. Jerry is absolute magic, and the harmony is the best I've heard. Everything the band has done is stunning - they are always on my stereo !
rocksedge2000
You talk euphemisms, yet answer with "if I saw one" regarding fiddles. What are you like !!!
kenny maclean What we have here, rocksedge and Kenny, is a failure to communicate. That is my best prison warden from Cool Hand Luke. I know, I know. Ha.
Jay Motensen
Best version I’ve ever heard.👍
I can't stop crying
I am an 65 year old man who loves Country music, I am Irish so was brought up with and folk music but the discovery of Alison Krauss made my live complete I could listen to that beautiful honey voice 24/7
I’m currently going through a breakup and I never understood how heart wrenching this song is until now.
It is a "sad, pitiful, little song," but these are real artists and they, simply put, make it GREAT!!
