For decades, Bob Dylan always and consistently had more to say than you ever knew could be said. And he always shows up prepared. Every line in this song is a deep reference. Every single one. And no one, literally no one, has ever been able to do or say as much in a single song as him.
Thanks for sitting through this on camera. An absolute masterpiece that needs hundreds of hours to begin to crack. Still sounds like it was off the cuff at 3:00 am in some jazz club somewhere, after closing. The list of musicians and songs he name checks are an encyclopedia of American history caught in time. Waited 50 years for it all to collect in his head. Nobody like him.
Bob wrote this during the Time Out of Mind years. Released it when they thought the time was right Wasn't recently written He recorded then also, not if this is the same recording but I'll look into it. Peace & Blessings 🕯️
For those of us old enough to remember that day in November of 1963 and also many of the cultural references to people, music, and events in this song from the 60s and 70s, this song evokes strong emotions. I can't explain why but Kennedy's death was somehow a turning point in America and maybe even other nations. It was like an injury to this whole country.
I had actually never heard this before. I was 12 years old when JFK was executed in the streets of Dallas. I looked up the lyrics. It's really a masterpiece.
He didn't freestyle it, but if he's said that the lyrics for this album - including this song - just flowed out, like a stream-of-consciousness. I reckon this is pretty raw Dylan, and it's pretty staggering that his mind goes to places like this when on something akin to 'pure form' or automatic pilot. One of the most incredible things he's ever done, and given we're talking about Dylan, that's really saying something.
Bob Dylan is one of a kind. He has done so many great songs, Knocking on Heaven's Door, The times are changing etc. He was also part of the Traveling Wilburys consisting of Him, Roy Orbison, George Harrison part of the Beatles, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynn. One of their songs End of the Line is great as well. Thanks for this one, great reaction. 😃🤗
Kudos. Dylan didn't freestyle but the lyrics poured out of him. Murder Most Foul is full of references of things, people and films that were popular at that time. You would do yourself a great favor looking into John Lee Hooker, Thelonious Monk , Slim Harpo and any others mentioned in the piece. They were all magnificent. Dylan is an Oak.
Your reaction Bob parallels mine exactly, it’s really hard sometimes nevertheless I’m thankful to Dylan for this somber work. I needed to know others feel this song as deeply disturbing to one’s soul as it was to mine. It should. It should. So I agree with your sentiments on the matter, twice hurts.
Dylan is a music historian and musicologist. He goes back to the earliest recordings, especially the Black folk blues. But also everything between then and now.
That’s exactly how it was. I Want To Hold Your Hand hit radio stations in the USA in February 1964. We were numbed by the events of 11/23/63. When the Beatles showed up it was something new, something different. I Want To Hold Your Hand. Something innocent. We needed that to forget. The Beatles came at the right time.

You must look up all the songs and Listen to Their lyrics, they All have meaning that relates directly to this song...all of Bob's words have meaning that is sometimes obscure... until you actually study them.
There is no way I can explain how powerful this song is if you lived through all of this...makes me weep...Amazing he waited so long to do this...Greatest poet of his time.
Yes, you hear violins. I attended a last tour concert with complete orchestra in in San Diego in 70s. Best concert I ever attended!! He nailed it with this song!!!
Dylans known for putting out long songs he was a game changer in that aspect in the 60s. Roger Waters bassist and frontman of pink floyd was interviewed a few years ago he said Bob Dylan made him and pink floyd realise they could do 10+ minute tracks not to mention the influence his lyrics had on how songs were being written after he blew the doors off song writing There's this period of time of songs before Dylan and after Dylan like the Beatles were doing doo wop run of the mill love songs and after they met Dylan and Lennon idolized him they became the legendary Beatles Jimmy Hendrix also idolized Dylan the list goes on. For suggestions of Dylan songs "Hurricane" is a good one, "Like a rolling stone" is a must, "Maggies Farm" but the newport folk festival version its a live version that is historic he made alot of folk angry with the fact he ditched the acoustic guitar and played an electric one, and last one "A hard rain's a gonna fall" there's the live performance in black and white which was from 1964 or you can do the 1975 version which is on Netflixs youtube channel its a completely different version of the same song i think it would be cool to do a comparison video of this deep song and how different the versions are. Dylans also known for re-inventing his own songs. thanks for reacting and listening to Dylan i appreciate how into the music you are
He's also speaking on mlk Jr. The day they blew out the brains of the king , etc. Etc. No one saw a thing. Also the reference to Tulsa, history in a song that Rhymes ,he's a lyrical genius.
I feel a bit bad for those too young to catch all the references, because they come like a tidal wave at the end… Art Pepper, Buster Keaton, Guitar Slim, Etta James, Bud Powell, It Happened One Night, Dizzy Miss Lizzy you filled me with lead… I feel privileged to understand all the references, like he is speaking directly to me. It’s hard to put into words how this song affects me.

If you're going backwards thru Bob Dylan's catalogue, do Early Roman Kings and Long And Wasted Years from Tempest (2012). There are lots of bootleg concert videos of Bob's recent concerts here on UA-cam . That bass is a huge orchestra concert bass played with a bow by Tony Garnier-- the longest serving member in Bob's band. Tony's been with him since 1989. Bob's likes to get his vocals in a single take. He'll do few run throughs and pick the best. High Water (for Charley Patton)
Hey there, it was Dennis Wilson that drowned; Carl died of cancer in the late 90’s - he had a sweet voice, sang and produced a lot when Brian Wilson stepped back. I think Carl was much beloved; really kept the band together

It's a double bass I think. I know Dylan is not for everyone to say you hate him and can't stand his music blasphemy. BOB DYLAN'S lyrics music will stand the test of time. People will be talking and learning about the man in a 1000 years. Try Johnny Cash's version/video of Hurt and tell me you didn't cry.

The piano IS insane. It’s Fiona Apple. There’s an article with her account on being invited with zero seconds notice.
She said in the interview she was so intimidated and admitted it to Bob. He said ‘I don’t need you to be perfect, I need you to be you’.
Only Dylan can basically mumble for 17 minutes and have glued to every word
