What’s messed up about not taking a $7 Batch is they will take the batch down and say “another shopper accepted this batch” when they really didn’t. They just group it with a good tippers batch and you don’t see the $0 tip from that person until you drop off all the orders in that batch.

On top of that the no tip order are just as disconnected as the CEO. No tip order almost always gets you a bad review. All the people I had issues with came from these unappreciative no tip customers that don't care.

I wish this interviewer would have turned on the app or asked Fidji to turn on the app to see what their current area was offering. As a customer, I don't even want to use these apps anymore because it is not fair to ME to have to tip so much in order to feel like my shopper/delivery driver is getting paid fairly on top of all of the fees. Tipping is not a mandated service fee and if it were then the company would be taxed heavily on it. I get tips due to having good customer service not because I guilt trip my customers into tipping me. I don't even ask them to rate me. I go above and beyond because that's what I would want someone to do for me. Really the word tipping is the wrong word for this fee that is socially required.

It’s becoming ridiculously hard to make $100 in an 8 hour span. Then, when I check to see how long I’ve been working for it only shows 3 hours and 14 minutes. The systems false, the company is false. I’m noticing with these gas price’s, for every $100 you make, you’ve already spent $35 on gas. Hi, IC shopper myself. On the gas price. Between start an finish on average for me, 13-20 miles drive to store. Then customer and back to store. Maybe 25 at most. Most folks get on average mile per gallon of 11-20. There goes almost all of that $7 on gas at $4.80 per gallon. What's left isn't much for how much time spent shopping and delivering. 1 customer NEVER TIPS! As far as I know. That person never tips and like Jen said. It's intentional as the default setting is %5 tip. They CHOOSE no tip. Sometimes it's cash tip. But semi rare

I have been an Instacart shopper for 3 years now, 3500+ orders. For about 2 years, I was averaging about $1100 per week at 40-45 hours per week. Ever since Simo took over, my pay has dropped by 50%, same amount of hours. I rarely make above $600 in a week, not to mention gas has gone up significantly. After I lose about $200 on gas each week, I am only clearing $400 weekly...about $10hr. Minimum wage is about $13.50 in my state. If it wasn't for my military retirement, I couldn't make it on these pitiful wages. So I decided to quit and got hired on at the post office, which I will be starting in about a week. I enjoyed Instacart for a long time, but ever since she took over, I have hated it.

Transparency? in the past, Instacart paid seven dollars minimum plus $.60 a mile for full service batches. Today that $.60 a mile is used to REACH the seven dollars base pay. To be clear, the mileage rate has never been considered a reimbursement. It’s a formula to calculate base. So where exactly does Instacart publish their ACTUAL base pay rate or heavy pay calculation formula? I’ll wait.

What I believe IC is doing is, they’re holding off certain batches to shoppers to make it seem like it’s slow so when you see a batch you just take it. If no one takes these no tip batches they then add that to someone who does tip. I had an order the other day and it was 56$ 16 miles and 3 batches. I was like ugh whatever. Highest batches I see now are $35 and it’s usually 3 orders together, and all 3 customers tip the default 5%. I don’t see many new shoppers. I believe the biggest issue as that Instacart batch pay tanked and at the same time they raised their fees to the customer to make up for loss of business. Because of that there are way less batches, and especially good high paying batches. I have pivoted to food delivery and luckily also have Cornershop in my market. Thanks for sharing this, Jen.
Her response to the $7 batches was unbelievable. She definitely knows about this being a major outrage within the shopper community and she chooses to turn a blind eye to it, for her own bottom line. She "intelligently" deflected the question, but not so intelligently either because there is so much proof all over the internet about what the batch pay is really like nowadays.
I shopped for instacart maybe for about 6 months in 2021 and the pay was great. As soon as she took over, it all started going downhill. I stopped shopping for Instacart about the same time as you and I've been following you ever since to see where it is all going. Unfortunately, there has not been any sign of improvement so far. Looks like it is just getting worse.
I was even a customer but no longer am. I can't contribute to the success of this company that is the source of so much frustration for so many shoppers. I would usually shop for over $100, tip well, and yet, almost nothing makes it to the person who delivers my groceries. I can't encourage that. I used to also be on the receiving end of that. Not happening anymore!
If anybody asked me for advice regarding shopping for instacart, if anybody is considering it, don't even sign up. You'll be good for your first 30 batches and then it'll drop like nothing you've seen before. It's way better to sign up to deliver for Doordash, Ubereats and other delivery platforms. Even Amazon Flex is better, where you are guaranteed a certain amount of money after delivering X number of packages.
    Again, stay away from instacart!

I’m a customer who uses the shipt delivery service. Instacart sounds horrible. I’m sorry people suck and refuse to tip. I use shipt because I hate grocery shopping. I always tip well since they are doing me a favor by shopping for me. I live only a couple miles from the store and place a couple orders a week. Sometimes it’s just a small order, with maybe 10 items, and some being multiples of the same thing. I tip at least $15-$20 for the small orders that take 30-45 min from the time they shop my order to the time my groceries are delivered. For larger orders I tip $25-$30 and at most they usually take an hour. Most of the time I tip my shopper more than I make an hour as a registered nurse lol.
Another thing I like about shipt is they now have an option for preferred shoppers. There are some shoppers who always try and shop for me, and I do prefer having them, so now I’m able to select a shopper as my preferred shopper and that makes it so they will most likely have access to my order first if they are available.

I sat in the grocery store parking lots most of my day looking at these pathetic, underpaid batches with no or low tips and ridiculous mileage (most with two different stores to shop) stream through and I refused to touch any of them. I had to laugh because some of these batches came back up 4 to 5 times. Someone would take it and cancel it. When you see a batch multiple times, come through, that's a red flag right there that something isn't right. Even more concerning was that IC boosted the pay by a few bucks after it sat for a time, someone would grab it and then it show up again in a few mins., back at the normal pay rate. What the heck is up with that? They must think their shoppers are idiots. Yesterday was my all-time worst $ making day since a started less than two months ago and I stayed out longer than normal trying to cross the 100.00 line and it didn't happen. And on a side note, I'm fed up with miserable, ignorant customers who enjoy screwing with you, just because they can.

It is becoming more obvious Instacart is prioritizing new shoppers over veteran shoppers. In a general sense of the word, it makes sense because new shoppers are more likely to take these low paying batches because they don't know better. Once you start wising up and become experienced and savvy, they phase you out and push the batches more to new shoppers. As long as they can continue keeping up with new shoppers coming aboard, they can continue this pattern. They treat their shoppers like porn stars, more attention is paid to the younger, newer ones than the "older been in the industry a long time" ones. As long as there are fresh faced new blood to exploit, they really don't need the more experienced ones because the more experienced you are, the more savvy you are and less likely to be inclined to be exploited.

Hey Jen! Thanks for sharing this clip of Fidji and allowing us, Shoppers, to be heard.
The $7.00 average base pay, no tip, is VERY common in my market, as well.
The straw for me was in the 2nd week of January, I accepted a batch that was originally a 50 item/66 unit batch, paying at $15 .78, with about 4 mile delivery distance. Now, you may ask what's the issue with that. The issue is that customer took advantage of me providing, what I consider "concierge-level, white glove" service, by adding on items. Not to mention, this included "heavy order pay" for 2-30 pack cases of bottled water and about 8-2 liter bottles of soda!!
This customer's order took me 2 hours and 26 minutes to complete! The longest a batch, or even multiple batches, has ever taken me to finish!! When all was said and done, the batch's total was 70 items/93 units. So, in doing the math, that totaled just $6.31 per hour. The absurdity!!
I took a photo of that cart, which was almost overflowing with items, as the customer continued to add on more and more. After completing the delivery, I provided my brutally honest feedback about my ordeal, mentioning the payout, no tip, customer adding on 20+ additional items, which added to my shop time.
That was the last time I did IC, as I know my worth. And to think that I just started IC-ing a month prior, in December. I was furious! As you said, if Shoppers stop taking these highly exploitative payouts, IC will come correct.
    EDIT 04/06/22:
Before you comment about what I "shoulda done," please read my responses to the others in this thread. You'll find that I provide much context and USEFUL information to help you comprehend what I experience in MY market.
I also ask if you could kindly share details on the size of your geographic market, the average payout per batch, delivery distance, etcetera?
This will, not only provide me with pertinent information on why IC's compensation varies at length, from one market to the next, but other fellow Shoppers as well.
The more transparency Shoppers are, the more it helps the IC Shopper's cause.
    Thank you in advance.

Can I ask what the minimum pay is in your city? I’m curious because I’m Sam diego it’s $18 guaranteed base pay from Instacart so even if a bath says it pays $7, if that batch ends up taking you 2 or 3 hours to complete then you’ll get $36 or $54 total once the adjustment is made for your time on the following week.
The no tip does suck but that’s on the customer. I don’t take batches wit “no tip” because that’s where you can end up making more than $18 an hour here in San Diego at least.

The customers are not being held accountable.People are taking advantage of the service because they use it numerous times and if they are not held accountable they are going to keep abusing the system! That is our gas.. driving to the store, and our time, walking up and down the aisles, standing in long lines, then driving
miles to deliver.. They should be ashamed of themselves!. I agree with you Jen, it has to make sense! And it should be no less than minimum wage. Most shoppers will pay little to nothing into Social Security. It'll be hilarious in the future when these store employees are comfortably retired, getting a few thousand a month in retirement, while gig workers will be getting $40-50 a month, still sitting in their cars waiting for orders because they can never retire. I’m in Memphis, Tennessee. I wish I could post screenshots of some of these ridiculous batches. I don’t know who accepts these batches, but I wish they would STOP! $8.20 to pick 46 items (72 units). $10.31 to pick 50 items (57 units). $9.93 for 2 shop and delivery orders 40 items (56 units) and on and on. I have seen late night orders for drug stores in the area with $7 pay offers, but after several minutes, if no one accepts the order, the pay increases by $2. So, it goes up to &9, then $11, then $13, then $15 and I will accept the order at $17, but I usually get a message that another shopper accepted the order before it gets to $17. Also, often when I can’t find an item, the app will say the customer requested another item that is totally ridiculous. For instance, if a customer wants beef ribs, they won’t request pork ribs as a replacement. This takes a lot of time trying to find out what the customer will actually accept as a replacement. I accepted an add-on while in a store once. The add-on was 22 minutes away from customer A. This information was masked. So, I don’t accept add-ons anymore. Last Sunday, I accepted an order that showed pay was $22.50. It was at Sprouts Farmers Market. Several of the items on the order were not available. I try to find replacements because pay usually goes down when an item is refunded and not replaced. It took close to 2 hours to pick. Then, I had to stand in a long line to checkout. The delivery address was 22 minutes away. This was not shown before I accepted the order. This was unfair. I contacted support to ask if the pay could be increased and was asked a lot of questions by the agent like couldn’t you see this or that before you accepted the order? I just wanted to know if I could be fairly compensated for 3 hours of my time. I could go on and on. But, I will stop here.

I did a survey in several online communities asking the question that Fidji WILL NOT ASK. Do Shoppers prefer flexibility or pay? Over 450 people responded and while the survey won't meet scientific standards, the results are SIGNIFICANT!

Gas is basically $5/gal. Just assume its going cost a min of one gal of gas per order..
Now you've got $2 and you haven't even started shopping/paid taxes/other vehicle and operating expenses etc..
..Shoppers generally need to stop taking anything under $15-$20..
..Take things that pay in the $1/item range ($15min)..
..Pay attention to how far away things are, aka is that 20mi split up between 3 orders around town?, or is it a single order 20mi to the middle of nowhere..?
..I would say not to take doubles or triples (until they are counted as such towards promotions), but they've made that almost impossible where I live.. seeing a single order (thats worth taking) is like spotting a Unicorn anymore..
Obviously there are exceptions to all of this, and location matters, (where I live avg rent is over $1,800/mth and fast food pays over $20/hr, so my expectations are a little higher than most areas.. yet I still see $12 orders, that will take over an hour of just drive time alone, get swooped up the instant they pop up. No idea why??)
Shoppers need to simply assume that every order is going to take a min of an hour and use a gallon of gas. And as "Independent Contractor's" we need to make well above min wage because we are responsible for our own taxes, we provide the vehicle, etc. 7$ wouldn't be worth an hour of my time even if they provided the vehicle and paid for gas! Demand better!

When customers add more items. I politely message them and let them know this will delay your delivery in addition we have a set time for the pickup. I have gotten a lot of people shocked. They can add a max of 10 more items. I do however have a mentality of being transparent with my customers. I use lots of happy face emoji when I say this lol. And to be honest when this happens I quickly review any replacement and if they don’t have it I refund it immediately. And yes that means their not getting their full order exactly. I always bring it back and let them know about the time crunch. Most people understand. Their always shocked though. It hasn’t affected my score. Now I did have a lady with 6 items and than she proceeded to add 10 more. I canceled that batch immediately. Spoke with chat and they paid me the full amount. I was super nice though.

I know my service is well worth more the $7 an hour now hopefully the shopper did get a cash tip upon delivery but that's another lesson I learned a long time ago and that is not accepting any orders without a tip. Customers that want to give a cash tip upon delivery should put .42 in the tip field.
look mrs. simo your company tacks a hefty 10% to every item the customer chooses. not to mention the delivery fee and service fees you charge customers. If it wasn't for us shoppers your business would crumble. Do the right thing and pay shoppers their worth. wake up from your delusional state and get out there and actually speak to your shoppers personally instead of listening or reading stats from your team. And for the love of God and all things good Give your shoppers a dedicated line to be able to actually talk to a support member because 99% of them are from INdia and dont understand what I am texting to them. its a waste of my time trying to explain in words they understand what i need supprt about. furthermore i hate having to repeat myself when an agent is assigned to my chat because they never ever read what i have already typed . time is money in this industry. support needs to tighten up. you need to hire more trust and safety people. i just the other day got a message stating that the rating and report of items missing was removed from my profile. the report was done a YEAR ago and is just now being removed . give me a break!

I stated this fact from the very beginning I saw the evil in her eyes and smile for the first photo-op. The VERY day she took over on Aug 01, batch pay dropped 50% suddenly. The agents were flooded with the questions of fair pay and then Instacart started to apply authoratism, threats and false reports to shoppers acckunts. Now, even though the experienced shoppers are careful to do batch that benifit them, even they have started to slowly overlook the tip piggyback riding of Instacart because contacting chat is a waste of time. Sometimes I think if they've intentionally dumbed their own agents to aggravate shoppers.
Everyone was on a defending train for her initially and now they realize the true reality of it. Its Shoppers fault mainly for letting this go that far because of their own greed! I'm pretty sure the same experienced shoppers started to look to refer people when Instacart threw a carrot in front of them. Now cry me a river?
The change starts from within first and if shoppers own core is selfish (read about shoppers snitching on shoppers) and greedy, then why expect something else from the Instacart???
