  • Chris Hicks played the classic Outlaws' tune, "Green Grass & High Tides," hundreds of times when he was a member of that band. Now he dissects the Hughie Thomasson song for the rest of us! #TheOutlaws #ChrisHicks #GreenGrassandHighTides

Growing up in Middle GA in the 70s, this was a big part of who we were.

1976 Amarillo, TX... The Outlaws opened for Lynyrd Skynyrd and I was there. That was a concert to remember. A decade or so ago I was zipping through Amarillo sometime after midnight and I had the radio cranked up. Somewhere northwest of Amarillo I picked up a classic rock station on the radio. By about the 3rd song I realized that someone had put the setlist for the Outlaws and Lynyrd Skynyrd concert I had seen. I drove out from under the radio signal before I got to the end of the "concert". Good times...

This song inspired me to start playing guitar, I started in I think 2018 and I’ve learned a lot I can pretty much play by feel over the pentatonic but life is busy and I haven’t really been learning anything but I need to pick up the basics again and hammer through some stuff I missed along the way. This song was on a cd that my dad made for me when I was little and I forgot about it for years until one night around 2018 I heard that chord progression coming through the radio static and I recalled the whole song, it’s kinda like I heard it for the first time again though. The one part towards the end where hughie just slid chords up and down, right before the surfer type lick where he slid all the way down the neck, spoke to me and I’ll never forget it, it’s like it was taunting me, calling me to my destiny. Calling me to what has brought me a lot of purpose and meaning in my life. This song put a new lense over my eyes and showed me the depths of the passion in my heart for music. I’ve lived in Louisiana all my life so southern rock just gets right at my heart and soul, unparalleled to any other musical experience I’ve ever had

Hughie was amazing. He was the biggest reason I became an Outlaws fan. You, Billy Jones and Chris Anderson are amazing as well. Love Randy Threet on bass

    Chris Hicks-
Thanks for the inside knowledge and experience with the Outlaws and playing live.
Instant Subscriber because of that. Tired of bedroom guitarists doing covers of hits, but never in a band

Your throwing me back to 1982 when I sat with my band and went through each section with them for GG + HT. After about two hours, I gave up ;-).

Chris Hitman Hicks! One of my all time favorite member of the Outlaws, the way you play and sing, just awesome! Jeff Howell (RIP) so sad to hear of his passing the other day. He introduced us at a "Once an Outlaw" show in New Hampshire, outdoor gig. It was a pleasure to get to chat with you. I did one show with Jeff, my southern rock tribute band needed a bass player for a gig and we were so honored to have him join us. A great musician and an amazing person, he will be missed. Green Grass will always be one of, if not my all time favorite song of all time. I hope you enjoy my take on it, (I'm the strat player). Keep strumming and singing Chris! ua-cam.com/video/pEg4NuNKnMs/v-deo.html&ab_channel=thecrazycal

Chris, Brother Hughie Thomasson was a Diamond, may he R.I.P., It is a cryin shame that Henry Paul had the nerve to sue his wife over the name of the Band, This made me sick, Cousin Figel

Met Hughie in a hotel bar one night after a show in the late 70's. He took the time to talk to me and even was nice enough to sign an autograph. The Outlaws were a band during those times I always went to see when they came around. Always put on a great show !
