I just discovered this piece of song and I'm amazed. At 53 years old, in the decade when I was a child, the most wonderful songs in history were written. How lucky those of you who were able to see those great rock groups live and how envious you make me!
In March 1976, at Winterland, I was sitting on the floor close to the stage listening to the Outlaws, (who were the middle act between Paris with Bob Welsh, and Lynyrd Skynyrd). As the Outlaws were playing, some rando guy near me asked if they were any good. I was shocked. I said, "Just listen to them!" For me, "Green Grass" was the highlight of the night. They blew me away! For me, Skynyrd did not top them. One of the best live songs ever.
The Outlaws - Tampa, Florida's favorite sons. The local band that made it BIG. Rest in peace Hughie Thomasson (white shirt) and Billy Jones (red shirt) - one of the most unknown and underrated lead guitar players in Rock & Roll history. Thanks for the music & thanks for the memories!
Billy was exceptional. A shame, he left the band for whatever reasons and never found his way. I've found a few rare recordings of him, the man could play.
Best version of this song I've EVER heard. Great intro, funky different beat carried on at times through the song. Wow, just wow! I miss real talent like this.
Allman Brothers, Skynyrd, Outlaws and Molly Hatchet. Best Southern bands of all time at that time and beyond. I saw all the original band members and what a blessing.
Alright, Alright, ALL RIGHT ! I've heard enough about it being perfect, & never missing a note. I have, over the course of 2 weeks (actually15 days) have METICOUSLY transcribed the entire 24 odd minute Magnum Opus...(actually I QUIT AT MEASURE 876....the drums I'm slow as hell on, and it became a bit excessive halfway through, ...8 hrs a day ,10 the first 2 days....when the other drummer came in I began getting old...) -of course I included repeat measures for many of the versres and choruses,- I maybe crazy but ain't no schmoo- but did indeed catch a semi-ghosted note at the 20 minute mark, but skip that it might be incorrect. During the drum solo, after the other drummer was going along to accompany the other one ... there is flim-flam that didn't flu....Just forget it... That dang course I took in transcribing...a freakin 36 weeks of Zappa multple measures of 17/8 ,5/4, and 9/8 reggae, Steve Vai in depth, musical nightmare..he did say no one had stayed with it as long as I had. Yeah freakin bullshit cuz thats cartoon music that Sylvester and Wil E. Coyote ...just nevermind. Beep Beep. Road trippin', Vicksburg to Jackson.
The original song is under 10 minutes. So they added alot of notes. Now I know why some bands have 2 drummers. In case one of them cramps up during a 20+ minute song. They can keep the time going till they rub it out.😆 Great song and group.
Capitol Theatre, Passaic, New Jersey, one of the most historical music venues ever! The overwhelming sheer talent that performed there is simply incredible!
Hughie Thomason & Billy Jones were such a great guitar duo and way ahead of their time. It's pretty cool how Billy was a piano player in the band and decided to learn guitar and it came to him like 2nd nature...Such a bummer that Southern Rock has pretty much fizzled out into something of the past, but at least we have these awesome memories of these great musicians...
And this ladies and gentlemen is the way that it is done. Saw them with Molly Hatchet ’79/80 Nothing like Southern Rock. Man I miss these days. RIP and thanks for the greatest of memories. ❤
One of the best (long) songs of the seventies. I spent a good part of my teens listening to The Outlaws. Great to hear them all these years later. Great band.
This was to have been my funeral song, but I've outlived all who cared, so I will enjoy this masterpiece as I always have. This song is an epic poem which speaks Love to all who listen.

I just found out that Freddie Salem (1953-2024) died this past September. Green grass and high tides forever, hoss. You left behind a great legacy. Nowadays you’re in heaven jamming with Hughie Thomasson, Billy Jones, and Frank O’Keefe. RIP.
This song, also. In Memory of Elizabeth Reed by the Allman brothers, the 13 minute version of Soul Sacrifice by Santana, and live versions of China Cat Sunflower/ I know you Rider from the Grateful Dead
Oh the 70's fresh out of high-school starting adulthood & still living carefree, work & party where the rules of the day, enjoying the whole 70's music southern rock, eagles,CCR,to many to remember & name, such a simpler time 😎🤙🇺🇸
Those of us old enough fortunate enough experience these legends up close and in person in a much simpler time are blessed with unforgettable memories..best times of my life growing up with great music and bands
I'm afraid that whenever I read that line - "THOSE were the best times of my life" it kinda spooks me. I'm 64 and I KIND OF understand - but it takes some EFFORT to get up, out and make some NEW MEMORIES pronto. There are people even in their TWENTIES who have kinda bagged it, and spend the next... 50 years reminiscing about HIGH SCHOOL Yikes! Just say whoa.....
I hail from the once great state of Virginia. Saw my first concert in 1970... B.B. King / Duane Allman and the Brother's. Have seen Skynyrd, Outlaws, Marshall Tucker, Alman Brother's, on and on, etc. Some of us took advantage of so many concerts, so much music and so cheap. We lived on the golden era of the greatest music ever. Thank God I did. 40-50 years fast forward and I'm still doing it just paying through through the noise as they say. Don't know about y'all but I still play my vinyl album's. Some people spend their money on goods, I spend mine on Music! Keeps the sanity...
@@mikebaird8648 ha ! I grew up in MD ,we were probably going to the same concerts ...stay young brother ! I still try to play my guitar but unfortunately arthritis and an accident ,my hands aren't what they used to be .luckily I still have my ears lol ..
This song was to the Outlaws what Whipping Post was to the Allman Brothers Band, or what Freebird was to Lynyrd Skynyrd, or what Highway Song was to Blackfoot. Those last song of the night, show ending 15 to 20 minute plus powerful guitar opus songs that all of the great southern bands had in their arsenal. The song that would whip the crowd into an absolute frenzy right before being sent out the door for that amped ride back home. The common denominator with the afore mentioned songs was that no matter how great the studio versions sounded, you could really never truly appreciate just how great the songs were until you saw or heard those bands perform them live with those endless, forever solos added on as they were jammed onstage live for twice as long as they were played in the studio when those albums were recorded.
I am a southern rock fan. I saw them all. I grew up in Jacksonville Fl. Remember paying 5 bucks to see three bands. We collected soda bottles for seven people to go. Hence why Curtis Lowe is my favorite Lynyrd Skynyrd song. RIP Gary Rossington RIP Lynyrd Skynyrd. Heaven's got a hell of a band!!
Southern Rock, Best Ever! Going To And Listening To Since My Teen Years, I'm 64 Now And Still Rocking To It! Skynyrd, Outlaws, Tucker, MOLLY HATCHET, Z.Z. TOP, ALLMAN BROTHERS, And So Own! Best Years Ever!
I’ve lived in 7 states and probably 30 or so cities and towns. I used to hang out in a lot of bars. I would always play Southern rock on the jukebox and just watch the people come up to see who these bands were that I played. It would just blow people away.
When Rock N Roll/country rock ruled-when people wrote & played their music, when no one had a cell & listened & rocked out. I was at the tail of end but my brothers all went to see these amaing bands in the 70's-I saw some as well in the 80''s. We cant go back, makes me happy & comforted we have these vids.Rock out always & forever to the Outlaws and the amazing era of music America had.
I saw the majority of my concerts in the 70's when I was a teenager. You could walk almost anywhere you wanted to and party with no problem- nobody hassled you and the bands were beyond awesome. Those days were the best and unfortunately gone forever in this country.
its incredibly rare to see the raw emotion on stevie and lindseys faces when they are singing to each other, its almost as if no one else exsits in that moment. I think there is still a lot of love left there
This song made me weep openly! I saw them in Florida back in 77 and met them at an all night diner in Lakeland later that night. I still have all their autographs and pictures from that diner!
i couldnt tell how many hours i spent listening to this when i first started driving a truck many years ago.hour after hour of driving & jamin out.was a great time to be alive.
And I posted three separate replies on a Reply thread, but all three disappeared immediately. I said there that music is a universal language appreciated by all. Race, color and creed are IRRELEVANT. I'm 81. A Southern man. I grew up in the 50's listening to WLAC, Nashville, Tennessee and Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, BB King and all the Bluesmasters. The Blues, born out of poverty and loneliness is THE foundation for rock n roll and all the other incredible stuff that we love so much today. Little Richard. Elvis. Fats Domino. Chuck Berry. The Platters. The Supremes. Michael Jackson. The Shirelles. Of course, black gospel music was delightfully included. And so much more. It was a wonderful time to be alive. ❤️
Hey man I am 66 years old and I was introduced to all those groups that you just mentioned the older guys that I hung with . I am from south east Alabama the home of fort Rucker . The largest helicopter training center in the world . I hope all’s well with you and your family.☮️❤️
Imagine The Outlaws opening for Lynyrd Skynyrd the 3 nights at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta when Skynyrd recorderd thier live album One more from the road. This was thier encore. The Fox was crazy. Skynyrd came out and played about 2 hours. Came back and played Freebird as thier encore for 15-20 minutes. I was there all 3 nights. The Fox was rocking those 3 noghts. July 1976.
Hughie "Buster" Thomasson was my moms cousin. He orignally live across the road from us in Buchanan, Va before they moved to FL. when he was a kid. He was here for a big family reunion a year or so before he passed. Green grass & high tides indeed.
In 2007 we went out to the beach in Long Island NY to see Dickey Betts. Imagine the thrill when I found out the Outlaws were the opening act! As it happened I was with some young people who barely knew what "Southern Rock" was. I said, "Oh, wait for 'Green Grass'". It's nonsense what they say about short attention spans- you just have to engage mind, body and soul with all your heart...The acoustics were great and the crowd was on their feet screaming. Of course the joy of the song is that the electric guitars go on forever and ever in a series of tidal waves. Hughie did not disappoint. There was no hiding the fact of middle age in physical appearance. But that 55 year old man blew the roof off. I was stunned by the sheer energy and concentration on display. So although the news was very sad, it came as no surprise that he was dead of a heart attack a month later. He's not resting in peace. He's killing it on a stage somewhere.
I guess my "systems administrator " has shut down my ability to comment. Well, fuck him too. I remember the first time I walked into my local biker bar with an Outlaws t-shirt on and someone asked who the fuck is that? Same thing happened when I walked in with a Tom Petty shirt on. Unfortunately some people are born idiots and they don't get any better. It's genetic.
The Outlaws was a House Band at the Pillow Talk Lounge in Cocoa Beach's Satellite Motel in 1972. I cut that wild hair of Huey's, as I was in Beauty School that Fall & Winter & used fake IDs to get in to the bars. They knew me as Connie (Driver) then. I was living in Berkeley in 1976, & heard them come across KSFO Radio one day that July ... It was soooo thrilling!!!
Hughie Thomasson will NEVER write a more poignant rock song to honor his musical heroes. What a gem...all these years later... Henry Paul, Tampa (and FLORIDA...) loves you...

As the Outlaws were playing, some rando guy near me asked if they were any good. I was shocked. I said, "Just listen to them!" For me, "Green Grass" was the highlight of the night. They blew me away! For me, Skynyrd did not top them. One of the best live songs ever.
Growing up with the best music ever. We were truly blessed
Amen. RIP, We'll meet again cuz Heaven has a helluva band...🤘
"Billy Jones (red shirt) - one of the most unknown and underrated lead guitar players in Rock & Roll history."
that's right.
Maybe dying won’t be so bad if you could go back in history to any point in time.
@@rodmunch4879 concur
Billy was exceptional. A shame, he left the band for whatever reasons and never found his way. I've found a few rare recordings of him, the man could play.
I miss the days of 25 minute songs with epic guitar solos.
Listen to goose
The key word there is music. Real musical talent nowadays is there, but they’re buried under the gimmick acts

These guys are or were such bad ass guitar players. Truly a magical jam

Musicians who actually play instruments. Imagine that. Glorious! !
Best version of this song I've EVER heard. Great intro, funky different beat carried on at times through the song. Wow, just wow! I miss real talent like this.
Makes you want to dance around in the living room for sure!!

Allman Brothers, Skynyrd, Outlaws and Molly Hatchet. Best Southern bands of all time at that time and beyond. I saw all the original band members and what a blessing.
Never heard of Skynard. I did hear of Skynyrd though.
@@guitarlad89 Just a typo, but glad you showed up to point that out.
Don't forget Marshall Tucker Band!
Check out Point Blank's debut lp from 1976, really good too.
ZZ Top and Marshall Tucker would like to have a word
23 minutes. Never missed a note. Pure gold. This is road trip music. After all these years its still unbeleiveable. Wow.
He said rub it out , ha ha, yeah rub it it out hehe
Nothing better than 20 plus minutes of guitar heaven
23 MINUTES PLUS!!! M.O'B
My first concert mid 70s 4$ Franklin College They rocked so hard they blew out the power That's the good Ole days
Capitol Theatre, Passaic, New Jersey, one of the most historical music venues ever! The overwhelming sheer talent that performed there is simply incredible!
Takes me back to my teen age years. Great times. Great southern rock.
Ck out blackberry smoke keeping southern rock alive in 2023
so there you have it kids...rock and roll at its finest. it stands up after the many decades
Amazing and totally into it in 2024! Outlaws put new age to shame thank you and again!
And this ladies and gentlemen is the way that it is done. Saw them with Molly Hatchet ’79/80 Nothing like Southern Rock. Man I miss these days. RIP and thanks for the greatest of memories. ❤
I’ve adored this song for decades. It just makes your spirit soar!
I am also planning to have this as my funeral song! The people in my church may not think it's appropriate, but that's life! 😂 Or death!
@jeffwentworth3930
The people in church are irrelevant.
It IS YOUR FUNERAL.
NOT THEIRS. 😊

I just found out that Freddie Salem (1953-2024) died this past September. Green grass and high tides forever, hoss. You left behind a great legacy. Nowadays you’re in heaven jamming with Hughie Thomasson, Billy Jones, and Frank O’Keefe. RIP.

That is a FACT!
This song, also. In Memory of Elizabeth Reed by the Allman brothers, the 13 minute version of Soul Sacrifice by Santana, and live versions of China Cat Sunflower/ I know you Rider from the Grateful Dead

Well said , southern rock at its core
Bands like the outlaws made being a teenage boy in the 70s frigging awesome.
Good old ((music) 2222 .
Hell Yeah!
💯 %%%%
And Fire on the Mountain for marshal Tucker! Right?
It is also, still, a winning hook for any band to know...have a GD great signature song.
The most UNDERRATED rock anthem of all time.
Not by my generation!❤
I will forever love the music of the Outlaws and Skynyrd.
I've watched this many countless times. I never get tired of it. It's one of the best versions of this song I've seen so far.
I saw these guys in Boston on that tour when I was 18. Great live band.
I’ve lived in 7 states and probably 30 or so cities and towns. I used to hang out in a lot of bars. I would always play Southern rock on the jukebox and just watch the people come up to see who these bands were that I played. It would just blow people away.
One of the best concerts I ever saw. I feel so fortunate to have seen these guys.
Didn't see this show but saw them the following year at the Capitol Theatre with 38 Special as the warm up band. Great show.

I paid $5.50 to see this live in 78. I miss talent like this.

I paid 10.50 to see these guys Santana, The Dead, and Eddie Money live at Autzen Stadium in 1978. Badass show took ALL day long.
Same here with Molly Hatchet opening, still have the stub.
That’s high quality living my man, high key jealous
Saw them at Adventure Island in Tampa in 83. Too drunk to remember what I paid for tix but worth a lot more than whatever it cost
Holy Friggin' Moly! Just exquisite!
(The guitar army) That is the largest understatement I've ever heard!!!!!!!!!!
I saw the majority of my concerts in the 70's when I was a teenager. You could walk almost anywhere you wanted to and party with no problem- nobody hassled you and the bands were beyond awesome. Those days were the best and unfortunately gone forever in this country.
Well now us youngsters have to bring it up no thanks to y’all

Chuck Berry. The Platters. The Supremes. Michael Jackson. The Shirelles.
Of course, black gospel music was delightfully included.

I return to watch this over and over, its what rock & roll is meant to be
Can't stop watching this video. In these days of cell phones and internet you appreciate the the talent and genius of Hughie and Billy and band.
What a great story!
Who doesn't like 3 guitars playing all at once? Especially on a song that is so totally likeable. Well done gents!
Nothing like them live. I saw them many times and they never disappointed
Hughie Thomasson will NEVER write a more poignant rock song to honor his musical heroes. What a gem...all these years later...
Henry Paul, Tampa (and FLORIDA...) loves you...
The song just keeps building momentum...!! LOVE IT!!
