In March 2020, the World Health Organization officially classified Covid-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, as a pandemic. That means the disease no longer constitutes just an outbreak or even an epidemic; the coronavirus has now spread around the world, and will continue to reach into other countries and communities.
That’s in part because of how contagious the virus is. When you’re infected with the flu, it takes about two days before you start to show symptoms. But coronavirus symptoms take an average of five to six days to appear, so it’s easy to spread well before you notice that you’re feeling sick. Many people are spreading it while going about their daily lives as usual.
The risk is that once coronavirus starts to spread in a community, about 20% of cases are severe and may require hospitalization. As those cases multiply, hospitals can fill up quickly. And people with severe cases of COVID-19 who can’t receive proper medical attention are at a much higher risk of dying.
Ideally, we would be able to stop the virus from spreading entirely. We can’t do that right now. What we can do is slow it down, so that the severe cases get spread out over a longer period of time, and hospitals are less likely to be overwhelmed on any given day. And that’s where each one of us comes in. The best way to slow down the spread is for everyone - healthy, sick, young, old - to limit social contact as much as possible, immediately. This is called social distancing, and it only works if enough of us do it. But if we do, it could mean the difference between the life and death of someone you know.

People in third world countries can't afford social distancing and don't have jobs that they could do from home. Which is why they still go out and work in public. Because getting food on the table is still the primary objective of the family. Starving isn't an option for them, so they risk going out despite the virus.

Not necessarily, I live in a third world country, any government employee gets fully paid without going to work, except for essential workers (doctors, nurses, police officers, etc...) and anyone working in the private sector gets paid from 100% to 50% of his full wage while all business are closed, people with part time jobs are getting food and essentials packages from the government, with monthly payment, and now that people don't go out and don't go to work, the spending is on the down, so we are getting food on the table without the need to go to work, and I live in a dirt poor country, so I don't think your logic applies to all third world countries, and this an instance where we realize why "third-world" is an outdated term, there is nothing in common between so called third world countries

Exactly, foreigners in my country of Vietnam never wear mask at public places. While all locals are wearing mask when going outside, foreigners justify not wearing mask because it will only prevent patients spreading the disease and because they feel "healthy", they don't need to wear any mask. They don't realise that they could be carrying the disease and are unknowingly spreading it to other people. There have been recorded cases in my country where 2 British tourists traveled to Vietnam with Covid-19 and then spreading it to other people in areas where they've traveled to because they didn't take any precautions like wearing mask at public places. The government now demand everyone to wear mask as one way to stop Covid-19 from spreading, even foreigners have to wear mask too.

I too am quite upset by the certain cancellation of the premier League & champions League and the possible postponing of the euros, but I'd be far sadder if my grandparents (who are all in their 80's) or my brother (who is severely asthmatic) dies. The trillion dollar bill they are taking out to help the economy need to be given to these 5 places to help society run and close everything else down: Electricity, Water, food/grocery, and health care... every one else’s bills are HALTED, No rent or Mortgage. no one owes anyone for the next 2 months. If no one owes anyone, no one has to work and no one stresses. Everyone can stay home and quarantine. This will also reduce the awful lay offs happening. As well as reduce potential crime and violence, as gun sales are at an all time high today with people anticipating having to protect themselves. We can avoid all this, taking scarcity and survival mentality off of everyone. This would be a good starting point.

You can still go to work. Those that CAN work from home obviously should definitely do that. What is important is that after work you don't go out to the pub or the cinema. You try constantly to have 1 meter distance "as good as you can"from other people. Of course most people can't just isolate themselves indoors for months, and they shouldn't. Just try your absolutely best to avoid people AS GOOD AS YOU CAN

My countries government declared a state of emergency earlier today, and this was something our ministers were very clear about. Just closing the schools won't help, everyone needs to isolate themselves as much as possible.

Wow! I really love that mindset “In order to stop the virus you and everyone else needs to behave like they already have it” it makes the whole concept of “social distancing” understandable. The UK government's plan is literally flattening the curve, hence the planned restrictions on over 70s leaving home. There's not much issue with them wanting to promote herd immunity in the younger population as they can pretty easily cope with the disease.

Im still confused. What about the people who work at the grocery stores? Customers will make them sick and they will make customers and their family back at home sick. We all need food.
We won't be able to reduce the infection rate to 0. Sadly they'll be infections and deaths, but by reducing the contact you flatten the curve. Lets put it this way: your local cashier might infect you, but without social distances you'd be infecting even more people at your office/ school/bar etc... if you stay home you'll infect your family at the very most, and not 10 other families.

This is the best info I've found on the why and how of stay at home. That's a HUGE problem is that there's not enough push for explaining why its important, therefore people just don't know, so they continue to go to work etc.
I'm not scared of myself getting infected but my dad, he's the only one who have to go out to work. and he's kinda old too.

my dad is 65 and works in a hospital emergency room, my mum works at a childcare. people like my parents are out there risking exposure to the virus so others can get healthcare and people who cant work from home can rest assured knowing their kids are being looked after and we need them out there. for their safety and for the safety of everyone they come into contact with we must all practice social distancing to our best ability.
Because your mum and dad work with the general public they have stronger immune systems than regular people. Plus, they know how to handle themselves in a situation like this. If you feel a little scared about them working a little prayer everyday will help. And be proud that you have such wonderful and giving parents. Not everyone can say that.

This is what all the people saying “we’re overreacting, most of us will survive the virus” don’t seem to understand. Self-quarantining and social distancing aren’t necessarily to protect healthy young people from catching the virus (although they will help) but to protect vulnerable populations from catching the virus from healthy young people.
So why don't the vulnerable practice social distancing instead?
anitabelikov I never said that they shouldn’t...it’s a concerned group effort. Some vulnerable people live with or rely on healthy people that might catch the virus and bring it into the house, as well.

There is also the chance that the virus will mutate into something worse, so for every person that isn't infected, that is a reduction in that possibility. If people self isolate and do get a mutated strain then there is even less chance of that version getting out.
Thank you so much for explaining that! Some people are really upset that some hospitals now have a strict no visitor policy. As a nurse, I have come across a few family members that refuse to leave the bedside. It continues to put patients and healthcare workers at risk. I hope people begin to understand just how serious this is. I will be posting a video with updates very soon about whats happening in my hospital!

Make sure you try buy face masks and gloves. Wear them to every shift and be fully clothed. As soon as you get home take everything off and put your clothes in the washing machine. The particles can stick on to clothes and what not.
The most disgusting thing is seeing people so indifferent and ignorant to this pandemic and go about their lives as usual and even going on vacations. Change starts with YOU.

The weird thing about the Coronavirus to me is how they send people home after being diagnosed. Something about that just seems a bit off.
I'm pretty sure they do that because we don't really have a way of treating it, so if you don't have severe symptoms the best thing to do is just self quarantine and let the disease run its course

They need to keep the beds open for severe cases anyway. If we tried to treat everyone in hospitals, even people with mild cases, we would overwhelm the system even with social distancing.
You DON'T want to be in a hospital unless you absolutely need to! There are plenty of other diseases to catch there, on top of antibiotic resistant bacteria

Thx for spreading the word. My whole Country has shut down, all businesses closed and nobody uses public transportation. After 5 days of staying home, the Virus touched several hundred in my area. We never witnessed something like this, we must stand together. I hope we can defend our societies and worlds from this terrible Virus, and that People will learn from it and leave the wildlife alone.

Brandon You don’t know what that person meant by their comment. I can’t get my medications unless I show up every week for appointments. I don’t want to leave the house but I have no choice. That’s another thing I’m worried about. There seems to be no concern for people who are already sick. Usually I can go to the hospital if I need to but now I don’t want to. I’m not trying to get this virus on top of an illness I already struggle with. Someone said they had a seizure and had to wait with all the people who thought they had the corona virus. Incidences like this anger me. Anyone who thinks they have the corona virus should be sent to certain areas of the hospital or different facilities. They are interfering with people’s lives who are already sick.
I've gone out once since this and that was for groceries and my meds. I havnt hung out with friends or family and I cancelled all my travel. Been bunkered down for 4 weeks now.

I work in a hospital in California. We are always at capacity, even before this pandemic. Sometimes I'll work in the ER and we hold 20 admitted patients at a time while they wait for a bed upstairs. That means we're at capacity. Same thing at New York. Thanks to health insurance for all the hospital system is over run and in major cities where people are majority poor, they use the hospital as a primary care facility which strains the system.
They need to make this like a commercial ad, and play it daily on tv, pretty informative
