The flu vaccine is something many of us take for granted. Every year, starting in the early fall, “free flu shot available” signs start to line pharmacies and clinics - and yet in the US, only around half the population actually gets the vaccine. When talking about the flu, many equate it to a terrible cold, inconvenient at worst. But annual strains of influenza are estimated to cause hundreds of thousands of deaths worldwide. The reality is, we’ve been living with influenza for so long that we often forget just how dangerous it can be.
The reason we need an annual vaccine for the flu is that it’s particularly prone to changing. That ability to mutate is also what makes it particularly good at causing pandemic-level threats. The last four global pandemics before Covid-19 were caused by an influenza virus. Experts warn that another one is inevitable and that our seasonal flu vaccine isn’t going to stop it.
For 80 years, the way we research and make our annual flu vaccine has remained the same. It’s a costly and timely process that involves predictions and chicken eggs. The result is a seasonal flu vaccine that’s certainly good enough, but we can do better. And now researchers are closer than ever to something new - something like a flu vaccine that remains effective year after year, regardless of the strain. Something that could stop an outbreak before it starts; something like a universal flu vaccine.

I mention influenza A and B briefly in this video - you might be wondering... what about Influenza C? And D? Well, it’s true that a truly universal flu vaccine would mean covering those too, but influenza C is generally very mild and is not thought to cause epidemics. And Influenza D? Well, that one is typically only found in cattle and unlikely to affect humans at all.

you mentioned that D is found in cattle but with the rise of interactions between people and species it is very possible that it could become another zoonotic disease. Perhaps lower probability but still.
How about doing a video on the biggest threat to the healthcare industrial complex? If everyone took 10,000 IU of D3 per day there would be no flu season or money making pandemic. It would wipe out their profit on cancer treatment and hundreds of other health issues. This sounds too good to be true so that is why you need to make a video which explains why it is true. Start with GrassrootsHealth and Vitamindwiki and interview actual vitamin D researchers.
Of course if you make a vaccine that targets the part of the virus that doesn't change you will cause that part to change. It may take a few years for the virus to make the change. With evolution it is hard to predict how long this new vaccine would work.

Doesn’t really sound like a secret.
I was part of a trial of 10s of thousands of participants across the world 2 years ago for a universal flu vaccine. They said they already had positive results from previous trials and instead of every year, you would only need to have it every 7-10 years. I didn’t follow the outcome of the trial I did but I got the placebo.
It was probably the M-001’s phase 3 trial, which unfortunately failed. There’s plenty of evidence the immune system responded to it, but it didn’t protect people from the real flu any more than placebo.

- Getting people to take the shot

Those are not the biggest problem.
Sadly the stem is not mutating because there is no natural selection acting against it... Once one the ones with a specific stem start being unable to reproduce, those very rare that slightly mutated will be the only ones that reproduce. Viruses reproduce very fast and therefore their adaption will almost seem miraculous.

I don't know if it's actually possible to fully eradicate the flu because I don't think it exists solely in humans but it might be possible to effectively eradicate it.

The covid 19 vaccines just lessen the chance of hospitalization. The smallpox and polio vaccines completely eradicated those diseases and the disease would not spread after taking them.

I get mine pretty much every year, but occasionally I completely forget.
It depends. In the UK it’s only free for certain people so most people don’t get it if they have to pay. I get it for free because I have asthma but it’s free if you’re over 50 or have other illnesses like diabetes or MS for example and if you’re pregnant or obese. I think lots still don’t get it though even if they’re eligible, main reason I started getting it was because they would ask me multiple times every year from September by letter and/or text message

It was natural immunity that did the heavy duty. Not vaccines. Natural immunity provides cross-protection against variants too so if you survive the flu. You will survive related variants.

They do think globally but mainly because outsourcing labour to poor countires increases their profit margin. I remember learning about globalization in school and the teacher talking about how good it is for the world. Sadly it's only good if you're living in one of the richer countries.

The flu vaccine is propagated in eggs as it’s a good growing medium. Downsides are the egg protein and dna can affect the outcome, as well causing reactions in people with egg allergies

Viruses (just like any organisms, really) don' t mutate TO do something. They just mutate. They throw everything at the wall and see what sticks.
So no, viruses won' t "react" to a given vaccine in a certain way because that' s not how that works.

I also grew up in the EU and I have taken the flu vaccine every single year since I was a little kid. If you are one of the people that would get more affected by the flu if you got it, you take the flu vaccine every year. It’s as simple as that. And it kinda feels like part of your… yearly routine, I guess you could call it. You are so used to it that telling someone you got the flu vaccine would be like telling someone “you know that medicine I have been taking every day my whole life? I took it today!!!”.
Not to needlessly nitpick, but the animation of the globe makes it seem like all of Africa and even parts of North America and Europe are in the southern hemisphere. In reality, only a minority of Africa (a bit less than half, iirc) is in the southern hemisphere, and none of North America, Europe or mainland Asia. The only large landmasses to have their majority below the equator are South America and Australia, with significant portions of the Indonesian Archipelago being below as well. Anyway, I realize this is probably an odd result of combining an aesthetically pleasing display of the globe, and wanting a simple infographic line horiziontally across the animation. Again, not necessarily a huge issue for the purposes of the video, but it could send an incorrect impression to people who aren't too familiar with geography.

Would there be a way to use this type of vaccine on corona virus? Does corona virus have a similar process of changing the top but there’s part of the virus that don’t change like influenza
Nope pretty much everything on the Rona changes to a degree. The Nucleocapsid or "inside part" of the virus also changes in fact that's why Delta is very transmissible there is a mutation in the Nucleocapsid that helps viral replication in the cell.
What flu shot? I have don't remember getting any flu shot since I was like 10 or 13 and since then I did not have any serious flu.
As explained in the video, the flu mutates really fast, so there isn't any one flu vaccine that works against all flu (yet). Historically, the best they could do is guess what flu is going to be common each year, and make a vaccine for that flu. At least in the US, every year there's a seasonal flu vaccine available to anyone who wants it. Around September or October, pharmacies (which almost every supermarket has, nowadays) put up signs offering the seasonal flu shot, so it's super easy to just get one while getting your groceries. It's totally voluntary, but every year about 50% of Americans get a flu shot.
I’m no biologist but can’t we use the same technique to make a universal covid vaccine that would teach our bodies to recognise conserved parts of the virus? A vaccine that would work for Delta, Omicron and future mutations?

the flu shot works well I got the flu but I was vaccinated but I accidentally spread to someone that had not got it yet. he become sick while I was pretty much sick for a couple hours and I had just had one painkiller

The reason there exist seasonal flu is due to antigenic drift that is a characteristic of influenza virus due to having 8 segmented genomes that allowed it to mix and match with another variant, producing a new variant. Coronavirus is a whole different virus family and so antigenic drift does not apply. Your comment just made yourself a big ignorant fool in front of everyone since you could have looked this up instead of assuming.

@Jord The Canadian yea that's very true. But I wouldn't attribute it to science per say. Probably has more to do with social structures and the need for power. I see science as a powerful tool that can definitely be misused by some; just like many ideologies. The difference, however, is that its first rule is to be challenged. There's no status quo in science. If anything, you're encouraged to question everything and being skeptical is a plus, not a flaw. I used to think it can also create social cohesion but after Covid, I realized that's not the case 😅

Why some individuals with underlying heath conditions/physiological vulnerabilities, are advised ( but never coerced) by their own health care provider or Dr to take the flu shot every year.
I have MS and if I didn’t get the shot and got flu, I’d be seriously ill, maybe hospitalised.

I was referring to the lethality rate of France and Germany (some of Europe's hardest it countries) as I am European - about 100K deaths in close to two years in countries of 66 and 84 million people. 0.1% = between 1 and 2 in a 1'000. Comparatively, the Black Plague killed 30%-60% of the European population = 300 to 600 in 1'000. And I haven't even broken down the data by age or presence of comorbidities.
So, this is less than a hundredth of a plague.
