I opened normally at about 2500' after a 4-way RW jump. At 500', i was cranking it hard in a turn with the toggle buried. Apparently, all that centrifugal force put enough pressure on my shitty cutaway system that the right riser suddenly and completely released! I immediately went into a crazy spin and could see that my 5-cell main had completely collapsed 2 cells, with the 3rd flapping open and shut. Basically 2 cells open. I later learned that it was the slider that somehow how kept those remaining two cells from collapsing. I knew that to cutaway in a rapid spin at less than 500 feet would probably be fatal, and because of the rapid twisting of the main, i was afraid that dumping the reserve would only choke off what little canopy I had, resulting maybe in a full-on streamer. So, my only option was to consider myself along for the ride. I held onto the remaining riser with both hands (I was terrified that whatever caused the first side to release would repeat itself on the remaining riser), and spun exactly like the gentleman in the video. The spinning was so intense that i watched my feet tracking across the horizon and began to get really dizzy. And just like our friend in this video, out of all that flat, open, Oklahoma farmland, my terror intensified as i realized i would impact onto the concrete taxiway! That's exactly what happened. And just like the man in this video......after what was a very ugly crash landing, i remember groaning, finding myself on my right side (after impacting on my left side and then momentum rolling me over), saying "I'M ALIVE" to the first friend who ran up on the scene. Conclusion: Hairline fracture of the pelvis. Compound fracture of the left elbow. Broken left foot. I recovered and made about 50 more jumps before hanging it up for good and starting my career as a military pilot. Anyway, I have watched many youtube videos on skydiving accidents and close-calls, but none has brought me back to that day, 40 years ago, like this video. Glad you're ok man.
They were probably all in tears too. Thinking he could’ve died or been paralyzed and then the relief of seeing him walk towards you would have definitely choked me up
Yeah I'm wiping my tears right now. Just seeing them shaking off their gear as they run was enough. The intention and emotion are clearly seen. Genuine love and concern. And thanks to empathy you can feel it all without having to be there. You're a good person.
I saw this happen to a friend of mine in 2009 with tandem jump instructor had to cut away and back chute was tangled but no where near as bad as this, glad this guy kept his cool and he made it out okay
Congrats to first guy on scene telling you not to move...even though you said you were ok. You had SO MUCH ADRENALINE coursing thru your veins your legs could be broken but you wouldn't feel it . So glad your ok !
Watched a dude hit hard while BASE jumping and the first thing he did was yell I'm okay! He had a femur through his pelvis and a broken back. Never trust your immediate feeling after an incident like this.
Funny thing is, slips on regular ol' ice really have killed perfectly healthy people in their prime, and this guy took a dive outta plane onto asphalt and didn't even break anything!? The universe really be crazy
Nick G I was referring to the material not the location on the airport. They use a mixture of tar and rocks called tarmac that’s a little different than typical asphalt on airports. There’s not a single location on the airport called the tarmac. So yes you are right if we’re talking about location
Gordo there’s a difference between material and location. I said grass and tarmac. Not field and taxiway. That’s like if he landed on your driveway and I said he had all that grass and landed on the concrete. Then you go that’s the driveway. Well the driveway is concrete and your yard is grass. That’s my point. I was referring to material not location
When he’s saying he’s alright and just puts his hand up on his buddy’s arm and holds tight... man that got me. You can see how scared and thankful he was from his body language. Powerful stuff. Glad you are safe my friend.

This brought back memories. In 1980, on precisely my 100th jump, I had a riser release (this was pre 3-ring circus) inadvertently at 400 feet. Too low to cutaway, and couldn't deploy the (round) reserve into the spinning 2 cells somehow being held open by the slider. So, I spun it in just like the gentleman in this video, and like him, I squarely landed onto the concrete taxiway. I compound fractured my elbow, broke my pelvis, my leg, my foot. In those days, many of us wore hard motorcycle helmets. My head bounced, crushed the helmet, and that helmet saved my life. When I saw this guy with no helmet, I could only think how lucky he was to not have crushed his skull. Really happy to see the outcome. Best wishes man.
Funny thing is they called BEER when I hit the tarmac. Just kidding no one was that cruel. Pretty sure they waited to tell me until I was back in the hanger. ~~~~~skydivers who land on the pavement (good or bad landing) are the ones that have to buy the beer hahah

If anyone is ever in any type of accident that involves ur spine in the least lil way, be sure to hold perfectly still till medics can get a C collar on ya and get ya checked out. Ya can break ur neck or back and not feel any pain at all till hours, days or even years later.
true story!!!! a friend broke HIS FUCKING BACK and ski'd all the way down the mountain! had he fallen again, he'd be skiing in a chair now. it was simply the muscles that held his shit together! when the doc did his x-ray, he came back and said something like: don't be alarmed, all is well, but DO NOT FUCKING MOVE. and then they strapped him down like hannibal lector. when he came back to school about 1 MONTH later, he was wearing gear that kept his frame stable and we were all told not to monkeyass around him... AND HE RODE DOWN THAT HILL ON HIS SKIES WITH A BROKEN SPINE! if there's a significant chance you just broke your back, DO NOT JUMP AROUND, DO NOT GROUP HUG!
What do you say though when interacting with the medics though, I'm sure they don't put a collar on everyone, just ask for a collar? Do they have them in the vehicle always or they've gotta pick one up and bring it?

That hug right at the end… between brothers… the essence of gratitude and the love of life. This is what we risk… this is why we jump together… on that day when shit goes wrong. You want your bro to be there with you and for you.🙏

@@XxJD1RTYxX "perfectly good" and "jump plane" do not usually go together. They function probably, but a lot of operations are kind of rickety and there's more than one reason the pilots are also wearing parachutes, not just FAA regulations.
At 0:24, that involuntary groan of horror is when he realizes his cut main has fouled his reserve chute, and he is fresh outta chutes and gonna bounce hard unless he gets it unfucked in a hurry. I'd imagine that was his "wow I'm for sure going to die" moment. Everything past that was pure survival instinct, and he managed to do exactly the right things.
Once adrenaline hits you man, there is not a second where your mind thinks about anything but your potential options of survival. You'll get it done in anyway possible way when adrenaline is pumped out into the brain or you'll die trying most likely. It's truly an amazing thing. We have an extremely potent chemical that is able to be released in micro seconds by the subconscious brain at any given moment with absolutely zero delay. If your sober of course.
@@jedr.3494 Yes but people react differently in situations like this, some people freeze up and are simply worthless. I watched a video of a girl who had the same issues this guy did, got tangled up on the way down, both the main and reserve. She cut her reserve when she was ~50 feet above ground and died. Adrenaline can be a great thing but if a person allows panic to creep in and dictate, adrenaline won't do much good.

I’ve had the same where I jumped off sky scrapers and right before hitting the ground or right as I hit the ground I’d wake up. Crazy feeling, felt real honestly
The fact that not once did you seem to be out of control even when it was out of your control and you acted as if you were the pilot of an airliner-working the problem all the way down. My hat is off to you and if I ever met you a tall beer

When his mate hugged him.. I felt that.
