  • Went skydiving on my birthday for the 3rd time. The chute became tangled but the canopy opened. We spent about a minute trying to untangle before ultimately having to cut away and pull the emergency chute. Caught the whole thing on my GoPro mounted to my wrist.

      But the tandem instructor spent WAY too much time before finally cutting away, I hope he lost his rating to be an instructor.

    • @KSSilenceAU
      @KSSilenceAU 3 роки тому +71

      @@Ryan-yo4dg Given that the chute Canopy was Open, and they had slowed down already, they were not in imminent danger of injury / loss of life at that point. Heck, If that was their reserve chute in that situation, and they were forced to land like that, their velocity looks slow enough that they could easily walk away from it.
      Their main issue was being unable to control their direction to get back to the field. Instructor tried to see if he could unspin the lines first, figured after a while that wasnt going to work, so ejected the tangled chute and at the same time popped the reserve.
      Now if it were tangled in such a way that the canopy wouldn't open sufficiently to largely slow their decent, then you'd be in a dangerous situation.
      Instructor also needs to take into account that if he is to ditch his main for the reserve, that reserve had better dam open perfectly or they will be worse off, so in *Some* situations (Like this one) if you have enough altitude and time to spare, its worth trying to fix it.

    • @JayDee-xj9lu

      @@KSSilenceAU I didn't realize that the reserve had a slider? Or is that only with tandem rigs?

    • @alexispainchaud
      @alexispainchaud 3 роки тому +5

      @@JayDee-xj9lu Yes reserve canopies do have sliders. They are generally designed to catch less air since reserve canopies may have to open fast in sub terminal speeds. Google for slider options in base jumping. Depending on the delay planed before deployment (therefore fall rate before pull), some people may go with a full slider, a mesh slider or no slider at all. No slider will limit the speed at which you may safely deploy but may be the only safe(ish) option if jumping at a very low altitude requiring a fast deployment.

    • @alexispainchaud
      @alexispainchaud 3 роки тому +23

      @@Ryan-yo4dg As someone else mentioned, the most imminent threat (speed) being neutralized and being under a stable canopy following a stable trajectory, there was some leeway before chopping the main canopy.
      One technique that I was told about and got to use a few times is to ask the student to bring legs together and back, like in the exiting position. Then the instructor arches as well. It seems to shift the weight back and for some mysterious reason that I struggle to explain, it then unwrap like magic.
      I do see a few items where there is room for improvement. (that said, I wasn't the guy in the harness so there could always be a reason why things were done the way they were):
      - Decision making. Yes, everything was stable but he didn't change technique over time despite no apparent improvement. There was no emergency per se but any altitude you lose is time you won't have to plan your landing under reserve. Not the worst thing but just food for thoughts.
      - Since he had all the time in the world, it would have been a good opportunity to ask the student to go back into exit position, hands on the harness, head back, legs tucked, and for him to grab both handles before initiating emergency procedure(standard procedure as described by the manufacturer when altitude allows it).
      - Speaking of emergency procedures..... the reserve handle should have been pulled no matter the RSL or Skyhook.
      That being said, no way I would have an instructor's rating pulled for that and I don't see the tandem manufacturer (UPT) or the USPA pulling someone's rating for that. This video is only great debriefing material for the instructor and any instructor watching who likes to discuss techniques and procedures...... except for the fact that it's the student and not the instructor wearing the handcam which is a big no-no for both UPT and the USPA.
      I am a tandem instructor, have been for 13 years, for +/- 4500 tandems, and also a UPT examiner. I am also not a perfect instructor, have had my share of less than perfect jumps. Chastising is not how we get the general skill level to improve.

      @Teddy Li Why would you sue? It's a risk you accept (and legally sign). You can't go through life trying to blame everyone for some shit that happens. This is a common chute malfunction and isn't considered gross negligence on the part of the skydiving company.

    • @ChristopherNips81
      @ChristopherNips81 5 років тому +34

      @Teddy Li In this case, absolutely that's what I'm telling you. In this case, the skydiving company is going to tell you, both verbally and written, "skydiving can be dangerous...shit can go wrong...don't blame us if it does." By suing in this particular case, that's exactly what you'd be doing. Suing someone for a variety of other reason can be holding others accountable for their actions, but in this case, you're just looking to blame someone. I just don't see any other way to look at it.

    • @ChristopherNips81
      @ChristopherNips81 5 років тому +22

      Teddy Li I agree with you that a waiver is not the end all, be all. But again, with this particular case, this is one of the most common emergencies with skydiving. Someone who goes skydiving and signs the waivers (forget the legal aspect of it for a moment), i.e. warned about the risks, and still decides to jump...this guy wouldn’t have a leg to stand on if he decided to sue. He wasn’t injured, the company didn’t show gross negligence, the instructor managed to cutaway and deploy the emergency reserve as trained (albeit, some here state it could have been done better...but everyone is a Monday morning quarterback), and in the end, all ended well. I think someone would be hard pressed to sue for emotional damages in this case as well.
      In short, I have less of an issue with lawsuits than I do with a lawsuit over this particular case. It is why your comment caught me off guard. I’m not sure where you are from but in the U.S., there can very much be a “sue culture.” I think this example clearly falls under a frivolous lawsuit.

    I’ve seen some crazy tandems happen and all of the instructors are always calm and collective. Of course your average tandem instructor usually has at least a couple thousand jumps. The coolest one that’s somewhere here on UA-cam is when there is a line over and the instructor calmly ask the student “are you ready to go for another ride?” Lol. This was very well done and he kept a good eye on altitude. 👏

    Told my skydiving instructor and the class that if both chutes fail then I'm going down superman style with arms out and singing the theme song - no way was I going to cry and scream like a girl about it. My thoughts were if I'm going to die then I'm going to have fun doing it. Best case scenario i somehow survive as a blob of broken bones and a kick ass story to tell or I die and have some cool ass video to share at my funeral.
    First solo dive and I have chute malfunction - twisted line. My first thought was shouldn't have talked so much shit, second thought was okay how do i fix this shit real quick. Checked altimeter and started trying to pull the lines apart - that didn't work so well....had to give it a little jerk with my body to get them untwisted. Went back up and jumped again the same day. The next day I almost died in a car crash on the freeway when I lost control of my vehicle trying to dodge a tire on the highway at 70mph...shouldn't have talked so much shit about skydiving being safer than driving. But it was the same, remain calm and figure it out, you got time.

      TheDailyGrind I had a cutaway on my 30th jump. More than 300 later and I haven’t had one since. I know guys that have thousands of jumps and never had one. I’m not sure they are just more cautious when packing or just lucky.

    I was thinking that if the pilot tried to spread the two groups of ropes apart.
    As the passenger put both arms up and to his left in a way that he could create a spin clockwise.
    I don't know if this is possible but it is what I felt to do.
    Birthday boy seemed a little concerned when his pilot told him to spin. (Probably not mentioned in the briefing) but once the emergency chute came out he was actually pretty badass if you ask me.
    Pilot was cool under pressure and saved both of their lives.

    He didn't even attempt to explain what happened probably to reduce panic so he could make a decision without answering more questions. It would have been nice to get a warning before cutting away the main chute.

    Yesterday was my first ever jump (and a solo one for that). I'm so glad the shoot deployed perfectly without any lines tangled. To make the decision to get rid of the primary shoot is something I was being prepared for a lot yet it seems scary. :-) And you never know if the backup's gonna by okay either, so... :-) Best. Sport. Ever.

    • @alexandernilsen9341
      @alexandernilsen9341 3 роки тому

      Tangled lines are usually not a big problem. I've got 18 jumps now (all solo), and I think I've had about 4-5 minor line-twists. Gives you something to do while you're up there :)
