@@kmart111 of course it is the pilot's responsibility - they know what the straps are, where they should attach and so on. You don't want the person who has no idea playing "guess what to attach to today". Of course, asking the pilot to show you how you're held on as a double-check might not be a bad idea, though it's tough to think that clearly if you're trying something scary for the first time.
I think he's being really generous with how he handled the whole thing, i believe aside from suing him I'd have probably knocked the crap outta him in some adrenaline fueled rage. Btw i would definitely be suing the guy but only because i genuinely believe I'd be very traumatised by that whole thing and the pilot despite getting him down was massively negligent in allowing that situation to occur.

As a life long pilot, instructor, examiner, it is beyond my understanding how any flight in any form of aircraft can take place without a standard pre-flight check.
Hell, even without a standard pre-flight check, it is unfathomable how he could forget THAT. This is not some small detail that he may have overlooked by not going strictly by the pre-flight check book. This is something that someone who knows nothing about hang gliding would think "OK...is everybody actually harnessed into the glider?"

It doesn't take a genius to rewatch the video and see for themselves. Watch it again and you will see that at around 53 seconds the man kicks out some sort of trapeze-like bar that he stands on for the remainder of the flight. It's amazing what the human body can do when the brain tells it "We are about to die; forget the safeguards and give me everything right now." Adrenaline is a hell of a thing.

I'm a tandem hang gliding instructor. I have logged about 1000 hours of tandem flight time. I am so sorry about what happened to you. It is inexcusable that the pilot didn't do a hang check to make sure you were clipped in and all the straps were straight. The pilot should have his rating pulled or resign from ever flying tandem again. On a funnier note, I know of a man who had planned a tandem flight with his dog. In his case, he did hook his dog into the glider. Unfortunately, he forgot to hook himself in. He launched his dog off into the air and he fell to the ground. The dog flew around solo for a few minutes and eventually crashed back to earth. The dog was in good shape. Very unfortunate about your wrist and arm. I wish you a good recovery.
I did a similar f-up back in the 70s. Primitive conical Rogallo, and I didn't have a passenger. Fortunately, I was at Long Reef in Sydney, only about 100ft high, and though I came in hot, no damage to me, or the kite.

I asked him 3 times to make sure that I was secured in properly lol.

There's was a paraglider who fail to check the wind conditions, down around San Diego? or maybe a little bit north of it I forget, He took off, from this cliff, with the Santa Ana winds really strong that day,, a 747 pilot radio the air traffic control tower at 35,000 feet that they just witnessed a paraglider still rising in altitude, as they went by. I agree with you Mr Swallers check everything 3 times and one more time just for insurance.

I say it’s fake.....no one can hang on that long even with adrenaline. If you don’t believe do slow the playback speed at 0.25 and notice 1. Not all wind effect is the same on lose hanging straps. 2. If you don’t believe go outside and see how long you can last by holding on....double that time with adrenaline and there is the maximum ...... I say it’s a fake. Don’t bother name calling, just look for yourself see and give me you thoughts.
Very fortunate to be alive. I witnessed a solo hanglider pilot launch unclipped at the bowl by the London Gliding Club at Dunstable Downs. Luckily he dropped about 6m onto the grassy slope and was uninjured. His glider crossed the bowl without him and hit the opposite side of the bowl. The impact was very sharp and metallic. The pilot retrieved the glider and after a steep clim back to where we were he started to re-rig. We argued with him that his rig needed a professional inspection. Eventually he realised that we were right.
You sir are a champ! I know this wasn't fun and I'm not trying to be optimistic-- but this is fortunate that it happened to you, as you happened to be strong enough to hold on long enough. Many people would have died in this situation. May this never happen to anyone else ever again.
Well, look at it this way: Most people wouldn't have had the strength to hold on at all, which would have meant that they would have dropped/let go the moment they left the ground, thus not falling far.
@@fc1133 Not really. He dropped at like 10 feet or less but 5 seconds into flying (where most people would have dropped) was still 40+ feet on a hill, and your probably going to break an ankle and go flying down the hill at a high speed which means more damage. the only chance for people who would have held on past the tree's is handing on a tree and hitting and breaking every branch on the way down,it would hurt. But slow your fall enough to survive. then again there have been people who survived falling out of airplanes with nothing to help them. So its possible.
Everybody makes mistakes, but error like this is not acceptable , there are zero tolerance for not doing the preflight check at all. Especially if you are flying tandem. The Pilot should loose his licence immediately. Back in my day when I used to hang glide, after checking the glider to make sure the wires, and all the fittings are secured the most critical check thereafter is to make sure you are strapped/hooked in at the hang point. I would always double, and triple check that I was hooked in before takeoff. Your instructor committed the most basic, and inexcusable error by not ensuring that you were attached to the hang loops, regardless of the fact that he did a good job getting you down to the landing area ASAP.

He probably had very good reasoning not to. He is the experienced one after all. He were also trying to grab the other guys harness while flying, to secure him from falling.
In 1973 I jumped off a 1000' cliff in my hang glider. It was a beautiful clear day and the flight began as a total rush. That is until I heard a rattling sound and looked up to see that the bolt holding the control bar to the wing was loose and could fall off at any time. Ruined a great flight but made it out alive. I ended up breaking my neck the following year (no major permanent damage luckily). Gave up the sport after that. I have to say, though, that hang gliding was the greatest rush I have ever felt!!
No...the option was to let go immediately when he realized he wasn’t attached. This reminds me of videos of guys dying launching blimps because they wouldn’t let go at 10 feet and ended up letting go at hundreds of feet.
Zuluparaszt3 of course the pilot is an idiot. Doesn’t attach the passenger, doesn’t land (even if a crash is required) immediately, and yes what you noted. This is what happens when inept people have dangerous hobbies.

We use checklists religiously as pilots for a reason. Anyone who takes an aircraft off with out going over a checklist at least twice will eventually kill themselves and passengers. And this was a perfect example of how such an "obvious" and important thing can and will be missed. I'm glad you survived. But that was darn close.
I rappelled for the first time (old style, rope over shoulder) instructed by a guy who didn't know what he was doing. He had me put the rope over the wrong shoulder. As I started backing off the cliff, he said, "wait a minute, come back here!" and fixed it. If I had realized what danger I had been in, I would have never trusted him again. The rappel went fine once the rope was fixed. They was no belay. When I told a friend who is an expert what had happened, he said, "Whatever you do, never go climbing with this man again!" A bit similar here: the fault is with the pilot who is the experienced one. But the student should never completely trust the "expert" either!
Do passengers usually takeoff running next to the pilot and with their arm already around the pilot? I would think they would run single file. Hang Giding rookie here so take my consriacy with a grain of salt.
I had one of those moments trapped on the outside of the truck as it picked up soeed.. My brain said, "Let go now and get hurt but live. Hold on and be I harmed but maybe die." Before I could make a decision, it was going to fast.
@K. C.W that's far too long. The instant he was hanging a foot under the pilot he should have bailed. That's at 0:31. He would have fallen maybe 8-12 feet at speed and been hurt, maybe hurt worse than he was in the end. But he was extremely lucky he didn't die. Dropping early, the chance of death is basically zero.

So true.. i remember getting into a bad car accident with a friend of mine. We were on a back road in Connecticut in the rain and slid into a tree. I got pretty banged up and lawyers wanted me to sue my friends insurance OVER AN ACCIDENT. Greed has destroyed so many things.
@@LaurenMiddleton28 well that's the job of the lawyers. They have no clue about the nuances of the situation, and you guys being friends have nothing to do with them.
@@LaurenMiddleton28 My father was having a divorce with my mother. He went to a lawyer to do the necessary paperwork. She (the lawyer) started a pitch how he can sue my mother for everything she has and let's do it right now. He told her to fuck off and left.
@@LaurenMiddleton28 ….if your friend skidded on a wet road they were going too fast, they were ignorant of the prevailing road conditions, which is their job to know. Car tyres are designed to be perfectly safe and work well within certain limits on wet roads….Skidding off a wet road is definitely driver error. They might just as well have attacked you with a mallet and bashed you up, they did pretty much the same thing with their car. While you’re at home hobbling around suffering pain for the rest of your life they’re out in their car playing roulette with other people’s lives. And in a couple of years time they’ll move home and you’ll never see them again. Meanwhile you’re still suffering. Give me the moneeeeey!!!
Yep we need more people to let people who fail to do their job and almost get people killed get away Scott free. That instructor deserves a beating, to be fired and never allowed to teach paragliding to the public ever again. Bottom line period.

Trust me, I'd have slapped the living shit out of the pilot for not landing quickly.

Eventually he realised that we were right.

But slow your fall enough to survive. then again there have been people who survived falling out of airplanes with nothing to help them. So its possible.

@@practicalguy973 really, 2 and half minutes feels easy most of the time lol, maybe not off a hang glider I guess lol
@@practicalguy973 The hang bar of that video rotate. It s most difficult that way and is the reason because fit people couldn t hang for 100 seconds
Bare in mind he wasn't both hand on the bar all the time, he held the guys shirt and then legs later on.
Credit still for holding that long in mid air with lots of movement.
Wow!!! That was terrifying! I was on the edge of my seat the whole time I was watching it. I'm so happy you're okay now.

Definitely a video I'll be sharing with my guys...
Right? How are people dismissing this MASSIVELY OBVIOUS fact? Literally anything that requires any sort of safety harness requires SEVERAL checks.
Thank you!!! that's why I'm not buying this,,, the guy doesn't even try to get a hold of with his legs,,, nothing,,,he is just cruising, not trying to get a better grip, sorry! You're milksap.
@@richarddeleon3558 good point!! Doesn't look like real panic has set in. Click bait, a stunt? Nonetheless, my point still stands for would be daredevils. Ive seen this happen for real many years ago. Although in this case the pilot was hooked in but didn't put on her leg straps. She was literally hanging for life by her armpits, but landed okay, anyhow.
richard de leon what an idiot you are!!!!
@@richarddeleon3558 at many of these tourist type sites there are many people hooking peoples harnesses in this happens quite often in reality as rigs are pre checked and the pre flight instructors often escort the tourists to their particular wing, in this case the 2 missed the fact that the other person hadn't done this, it is not false as the instructor and the school has reported the incident to the relevant authority in Switzerland as is required by law...

I think he meant to. I'm just guessing, but I think the weight of the passenger is making the glider turn left. And also, there's wind.
To be more precise: Its weight of the passengers Balls.
It looks like the pilot first concern was to rise him up and he missed the spot.

Good point, I don't think most of us would actually have the grip strength to hold on so long, avoid panic etc..

I don’t understand. Why pilot chose to turn left on 00:56. He could land on the grass right there. Instead he decided to take longer and higher way
I guess he was afraid of the trees but he should have tried it because in 9 out of 10 cases the hanging person would have lost grip way sooner.
The video literally tells you. Hes trying to land there quicker but can't control the glider. You can even see the wind blow them the wrong direction away from landing sooner....God hates this man apparently.
He probably had very good reasoning not to. He is the experienced one after all.
He were also trying to grab the other guys harness while flying, to secure him from falling.

Well, hang gliding it is.
lol you sound like a liveleaker
That is terrifying just watching it! I can't imagine how much worse it was to actually experience it.
Well just imagine it!
Not many options. Way to hold on tight and endure. Congratulations on living to fight another. day.
The pilot was an idiot, he could easyly take the carabiner with his free hand and connect it to himself.
Holey friggin. Crap dude. You have a gorilla grip... just wow. So glad you are alive. What an incredible experience.
Go fast be safe.
+aluisious Your arrogance is astounding. Have you considered the man has never hung from a gliding harness? He didn’t realize that he wasn’t attached properly until he was too high for a safe drop. And from there things only got worse. Everyone thinks they are some type of super human and they would have done something different. The reality is most people stand still and do nothing in the split second that could make a difference.
Wow. Heard your story on WWTL podcast today. Thank you for sharing this story!
Dude, that grip strength saved your life. People, near 150 seconds of griping on for life. Grab a pull up bar and try that yourself. Wow.

Another time me and my friends where in an abandoned building but suddenly an alarm went off. We had like infinite stamina and way more strength(had to climb up a wall). So we had to run from a security guy.

Jackie chan and tom cruise are crying while watching this video.
It really is impressive what he did here. Not sure that most people realize how hard it would have been to hold on that long. He wasint just holding onto a bar he was holding onto a bar attached to wings flying thru the air. The G-force likely made it even harder to hold on at some points. Tom cruise aint got shit on this guy but im sure jackie chan would appreciate this insane accidental stunt.

@@lopezb Well true, but the student rarely knows enough to save himself.
This is why teachers tell us to check our homework before turning it in!!
Do passengers usually takeoff running next to the pilot and with their arm already around the pilot? I would think they would run single file. Hang Giding rookie here so take my consriacy with a grain of salt.
@@arisakagirl4552 No clue. I don't fly hang gliders. But your point does make sense.
Note to self, if not attached to hang glider, let go immediately
Good point.
Any time shit is going out of control bail immediately. Things don’t get better.
While still grounded you mean.
