  • This should be just a simple practice tracking jump. I already was under a good wing, then I ruined my skydiving sunday because of this stupid action... Don't stall your chute when you're low!

      A lot of the time it's a chest mounted GoPro. I think you're limited a lot to where you can aim it.

      Some skydiving clubs are very restrictive about helmet cameras. Especially since some formula one driver‘s helmet cam penetrated his skull during a skiing accident.

    I was unlucky myself and had a cutaway on my 25th jump that was also the jump I completed my A license. Was renting a rig that the packers the day before were using to teach a student with like 8 jump how to pack. He packed it and the packers spaced out and put it back on the rack by mistake, never repacking it properly. I ended up jumping it the next morning and dude had packed me a step through haha. Good time. Needless to say the DZ owner was hopping mad at the packers after I landed and they figured out what happened.

      ​​@@whatilearnttoday5295😂 are you a skydiver? If not then this equipment costs a lot. When youre training you have to use the school's then once youre qualified, youre still unlikely to be doing the packing yourself for a while even if you do buy your own gear. So using other's equipment is done a lot in slydiving, especially in the beginning or for people who do it more casually.

      RAW is simply the format of the footage or image. Basically means unedited or compressed and contains the full quality and data of the file.

    I know people already mentioned avoiding advanced maneuvers below 2k feet. But if I may add, next time you stall your wing just relax and release both toggles/risers at the same, slow pace. And it will not spin you again

      He doesn’t have slider stops for his slider and didn’t pull the slider past his toggles, so when he did stall it the slider ended up pinching the lines not letting one or both of them back up

      @@andycopland3179 Negative. Packing error with the right hand toggle going through the excess loop, which created a knot when he released the toggles. I think. Check at 1:37, and you can see what looks like the toggle with the lines wrapped around it.

    Personally if I found myself a few thousand meters above the earth with my legs facing the same direction as the horizon, spinning rapidly around, I would reconsider my life choices. But hard drinking is a hard habit to break! Glad you made it jesus that looks terrifying.

    Years ago I did four jumps on a single afternoon trying to get my free fall cert and obviously moving to fast. On my last jump I had bad body position, main deployed off the back of my head and my risers and toggles came out wrapped worse than here. Had to cut away. My instructor told me I was luckier than stupid and to stick to golf.

      Phorbinsflyers might’ve meant not demonstrating an ability to self assess whether or not he was fit to jump and didn’t take a break when he knew he was getting fatigued. Not saying that’s what happened, I just think that’s the most likely argument. Definitely shouldn’t berate someone for making a decision that saves their lives

      Four jumps isn’t fast man, you just had a bad instructor based on the fact of his reaction. Shit happens in the air and you get stuck in situations that can suck. But the fact you fixed it and saved your life means you did good, wasn’t luck or anything. Hope you stick with the sport man blue skies!🤘

    I had to do a cutaway on my first jump had 10 or so since. in my 2000+ dives. you took care of business. good jog when in doubt wipe it out

      I don't know if anyone responded so I'll explain. His toggles were wrapped up in his slider. Toggles are like a steering wheel combined with breaks. He would of had zero control of his landing.
      He did the smart thing.

      He pulled the brakes to hard or long, stopped forward movement. Forward movement is what keeps the chute open.

      ​@@kevingallineauii9353 chutes like this work like a plane. You have to be going forward or you stall. So when he pulled brakes hard/long he stalled and that is when he started to spin around fast. Just like a plane falling from the sky. Then he pulled his emergency cord. Which deploys the reserve and cuts away the main (most likely this is what his setup was).
      Edit:
      And a bit more detailed, the fact that he spun and not just fell straight down, means he more than likely stalled one side of the wing.

      @@MoonLiteNite Main cut away handle on the right side of your rig. Reserve deploy on the left. You pull your cut away first then your reserve. No handle that does both.

      @@ericstory9051 Skyhook tho, its in the majority of modern rigs, it means when you pull the cutaway handle its already opened the reserve, so one handle does do both

    It must be weird having the cutaway parachute land in your back yard, or on your car while driving down the freeway, or on power lines.
    And recovering the cutaway chute, how do you find it, does it have a return for reward phone number in it?
    What is the strangest place that your cutaway chute every landed?

      Mine landed 10 feet from where I landed, because I spotted so well; total chute lock and slider lock; plenty of time at 3K'. Everyone hated me for being so PROFICIENT on the cutaway. Oh well.

    It looks like he made a hard right turn and collapsed his canopy. I've done this before on a Monarch. It literally wrapped around me, scared the hell out of me, but I kicked it out and it reinflated. Only the pilot can make the call. I'm sure if he cut awayhe had his reasons. Blue Skies! D23360

    Do you retrieve the cutaway chute? How do you know where it went to?
    Can it be re-used?

      That is the least of your problems. Some friction Burns on panels can be replaced. A parachute is not hard to find

    @1min 45sec looks like the break line is through the handle, that would cause a tension knot in the break line when he went deep in for the turn.. Hard to see what happened through...

    I've stalled an older type (squares), many times. They re-inflate after a couple of seconds, with about a 50' loss. Do these newer canopies have different characteristics?

      That works fine for an even stall, an uneven one sends you spinning and creating line twists which locks the stall configuration until the line twists can be resolved (if possible).

      @@flybeep1661 With paragliders (which are basical chutes on steroids) you can manage an asymmetric stall by asap pulling down both brakes to get to a full stall (no more rotation) and then release the brakes symmetically to let it fly again.

      Elliptical Parachutes have very small stabilizers and are very fast so if you stall them there is a chance that it will not recover like the older more stable parachutes used back in the 70's, 80's and early 90's. I actually performed a stall on a very fast elliptical parachute when it first came out called the Stiletto and I can attest that it is unpredictable. I stalled and then let up on one toggle to induce a stall spin and my lines corkscrewed to the point that it was locked in a reverse spin and I had to cut it away. Not much was known back then about how the elliptical parachutes responded to such stunts so I can see how this happened to this person since he was clearly spinning on his back when he cut away the main.

      I should also mention that I have over 3,000 skydives and jumped in the late 70's, 80's, 90's and early 2000's so I have a great deal of experience with different parachutes and what this skydiver did is not uncommon. I use to stall my parachutes all the time and only had to cut away 1 time as a result of the canopy becoming unrecoverable. The altitude that he performed this stall was fine as he was able to safely execute emergency procedures. This guy did the right thing by chopping quickly before the spin becomes so violent that you may not be able to even cut away the chute. I have seen this happen so it is possible. These elliptical parachutes are great and a hell of a lot of fun but you just need to be aware of the negative aspects of these types of parachutes.

      Chaos It looks like a Sabre 2, like mine. They’re pretty bulletproof and not elliptical. I love it. Th first thing I did when I downsized to it was a high pull and repeatedly stall it. Once you’ve done it a couple of times it’s no thing right? This dude managed to stall this somehow, and at 1500’ I think I’d be doing my drills if my canopy had shit itself and twisted up. He did it decisively, quickly, and effectively. Landed it like a boss, no panic, it was textbook. Fair play to him. 🤙🏻

      He accidently stalled his main chute, which he brought about himself (I think, that's why he's calling himself stupid) so he had to cut away and deploy his reserve..

      The description says he stalled it I think though I don’t know why he didn’t recover so it’s hard to tell exactly why he needed to chop his main

      @Mitch Batten Surely you can re-inflate a stalled freefall parachute like you can a paraglider? That sounds like a truly terrible design fault. How did he stall it? Full flare brakes? Hands right down? I'll try to time-stamp that if I see it. On first watching I can't see a stall or a reason for one.

    When I was still jumping, I used a split slider to get rid of the drag, and also not have all of that flapping noise. Anyway, what was the reason for the cutaway? He had a good canopy? What didn't I see?

      From what I gather in the comments, he stalled his main then it likely folded up on itself and caused a malfunction, thus the cutaway.

    You can see he had issues with his main chute once deployed, his main chute cutaway then to deploy his reserve chute was done very well, so well that non skydivers didnt even notice what he did.

      "You can see he had issues with his main chute once deployed," What are you talking about? First off, you can barely see the chute. Exactly what issue is there? Describe it! He had a perfectly flying wing, adjusting heading on back risers and then all of sudden it stalled for whatever reason you can't see. Also, a stall by itself shouldn't be a big issue as you just reinflate when the angle of attack is corrected. Any swooper knows this and also the stall point of their canopy, we practice it in the air. Personally I think you're being delibaretly vague because you don't really know and I bet you're not even an experienced skydiver.

    as an aff student im trying to understand what you did wrong, i know we cant see tho. Did you pull too much on the toggles or something like that leading to the stall?

      I speculate that he probably pulled up on the toggles while there was a down current or turbulence near it and the sides of the chute got caught in two different flows while he was stalling. Considering the main looked good, it was probably a combination of things - his speed, wind speed, the angle of the chute. Thank goodness for reserves.

      He stalled his canopy by deliberately over pulling his rear control lines. This is pretty common practice and is great fun. You then release the rear control lines and the canopy should re-inflate fine.
      The problem here is his slider. That’s the blue rectangle of fabric you see about 1:34. It usually sits at the bottom of the control lines after the canopy is inflated. Before the canopy inflates it sits up at the top of the lines near the canopy, and it’s job is to slow the inflation speed of the canopy down at the time of deployment to reduce the shock on the jumper, otherwise the opening shock of getting of getting pulled from freefall speed, say 120mph, too quickly would injure the jumper.
      The problem with his rig is there are no stoppers at the end of the control lines. They’re normally plastic tubes that sit between the end of the lines and the slider, and their job is to stop the slider from sliding too far down and jamming the control lines.
      So when our boy here released his control lines to reinflate his canopy from the stall, the lines got jammed by the slider and wouldn’t return to normal, so the canopy remained stalled. So he’s got maybe 10-12 secs until impact at this point. Our boy did all the right things from then on- he pulled his cutaway to get rid of the jammed rig (kudos for keeping hold of the cutaway pad, you can see it in his hand, the yellow thing, they’re expensive!). Once old rig was off he dumped out his reserve and landed sweet as a nut.
      What he then hopefully did was take his retrieved canopy off to the riggers and get them to fit some slider stops.

      He induced an aerodynamic stall by shortening the brake lines. You may wrap a few loops around your hands, grab higher up the lines or his lines were out of trim (too short). This gives deeper braking than designed resulting in a stall. When the canopy stalls, the wing tips will fold back behind the jumper and forward airspeed will cease. If the recovery (releasing the brakes) is too abrupt or asymmetrical, the canopy will go into line twists which happened here. He was too low to resolve the issue and elected to cut away.

      @@TheAcenightcreeper A stall is when there is not enough air flowing over a wing to maintain lift or the air flow is disturbed and separates from the wing's surface. With a ram-air parachute, the wing is inflated by air entering the wing through openings in the leading edge. The trailing edge is closed which traps the air inside these cells. Because of this, during a stall, the parachute wing not only loses lift but also rigidity.
      Skydivers practice stalls because, while a rare occurrence, they can happen unintentionally. Recognizing when a stall is about to occur can help prevent them and proper recovery is helped through practice.
      This jumper had an assymetric stall which caused the parachute to spin faster than the jumper's body could follow. This caused line twists. The suspension lines wrap up into a single tight column. While these twists may usually be worked out without further incident, this particular situation caused a spinning downplane. The canopy spins rapidly while it enters a vertical dive.
      Speeds during a downplane can be near freefall speeds. A safe landing during this condition is not possible.

      I watch these because my best friend skydives and I worry about him, I send him these videos so hopefully he can learn something from other peoples issues...it seems like a really great community when I read comments on here that professionals leave on how they could do better or what they could do to prevent, so thank you for helping keep folks informed!

      Do it. I was waiting to do my first solo jump yesterday and watched 6 newbies do a tandem - they all got down and said "that was amazing!" despite being nervous as they left to the plane. Unlike the chaos on the ground, the elite people that work in the sky take safety and procedures very seriously. Trust me, you won't regret it after its done.

    Maybe your new super-techno canopy can't recover from a stall, but I used to stall my fat old Viking Superlight just for fun - usually down to 1000 feet only just to be safe.
    [Now that I think about it - I recall how I optimally trimmed the brake stow for deployment. It had a habit of stalling right after opening and I lessened the amount of stow until it could open smoothly without stalling right after opening. (Added additional stow loops down the steering lines).]

      It wasn't that it couldn't recover, it's that when he tried to recover he let his toggles up asymmetrically (per reading his response in other comments). This caused a spin up.

    How did the chute stall exactly though? It looked like the slider got stuck in one of the suspension lines maybe, and started to flutter? Was that why you had to collapse it and tie it shut like that?

      I am guessing you were a student a year ago and have since learned better, but just in case, you are not a skydiver, most skydivers collapse their slider, and then sometimes pull it down and tuck it behind their head. You do not need to do this, but the canopy does fly better with less air resistance You also get rid of that annoying sound the slider makes.

      @@Shibu11229 jump 10 on Sunday. I went out to lunch a few days ago with a few experienced guys from the DZ in Zephyrhills. I used that opportunity to ask every question that had been running through my mind. And they said the same thing-never hesitate to ask anything no matter how small! As far as getting over the “door monster fear”-they said that one I’ll have to find out on my own!! 😆

I do remember that the more I learned about my rig and how it works, the less I feared. Once you know how to do a thorough equipment, preflight safety check, the fear will go away.

    I only jumped with big training canopies, stalling them was no problem, I guess if the stall lasts too long it can get in an unrecoverable state, but you had to do it on purpose.

      Yeah, when doing my static line and the guy on the radio told me to flare hard and stall it into a hard turn at a few thousand feet I was like "Are you sure that's a good idea?", but it was a one way radio tucked into a sleeve pocket. So I made sure I remembered which handle to pull first, puckered up, and did it. It felt real nice though, so I was all smiles when I landed. :)

      Not A Knot a chute cost $1-4K USD. Most issues are because of lines. They definitely go get their chute and inspect to re use.

    Good afternoon everybody, I’m about to start AFF and I’m trying to learn everything I can, can someone please help a new person understand what the malfunction was? Also, if you release your main chute and you see it falling far away from the drop zone do you absolutely have to land at the drop zone? If you see a safe place to land where your main chute is going to land are you allowed to land there instead of landing at the drop zone? Or is that a no no?

      Bit hard to tell the malfunction but if you do cutaway you do not follow the canopy you land at the DZ as normal, there should be staff on ground with one spotting for this kind of thing, then you go hunt for canopy.

      @@mcluhanmedia1223 He stalled the main canopy after it was open and flying normally. That means the canopy got deflated/deformed and lost its capabilty to slow the fall. It could maybe be reinflated With a little time but he chose to cut away to the reserve canopy.

    couldn't see what was wrong with your canopy after you stalled it. Your definition of "low" and mine obviously differ widely. Cutting away from a low-speed malfunction at 1500 feet is not the end of the world, if the alternative is landing a bad canopy, you chop it and dump.

    Im not a skydiver (mainly because im too heavy), can someone explain if the reserve comes out of front or back? The reason i ask is because it looks like he deploys reserve on his back?

      Both main and reserve come out of the back. The main is packed on the bottom and reserve on the top (in separate areas)
