_"You want to live like this? Abandoned and alone? A prisoner in a world you can see, but never touch? Old and infirm as you are, I would trade a thousand of my frozen years for your worst day."_
MEG: "You can't really get Mr Freeze wrong"
Guys, we need to keep her away from Batman & Robin (1997)!!!
That movie may be cheesy but even it knew the cinematic beauty of a tragic villain looking upon his frozen beloved.
At least it's better than The Killing Joke animated movie.
@@fynnthefox9078 Honestly, I disagree, because, full disclosure, I only saw the second half of The Killing Joke, because I heard the first half was that bad. And I like what I saw.
@@andre1999oWatch the first half and come back to me :P they totally lost their minds.
A BAT CREDIT CARD !!!
Mr Freeze in a lot of ways is like Batman, because they both cling on to the one thing that keeps them human: The people they love
They also both have problems showing emotions, or being anything but calculating and clinical.
After watching your reaction to this, I'm so ready to see your reaction to the Sub-Zero movie especially since it serves as a sequel to this episode. Also that ending shot of Freeze kneeling in front of Nora is one of the many iconic shots from this show.
"I can make a Nora cosplay!" Takes a picture under water.
Grant Walker is Walt Disney and Oceania is what Epcot was supposed to be, but Disney died before he could finish his city of the future.
Makes you wonder if Uncle Walt wanted to do the same thing... 😅
Yep obviously Grant is clearly modeled after Disney he's just an older version
The legendary Michael Ansara lent his voice to Dr. Fries. His voice was so powerful, resonant, and distinct that he was always a treasure, when and wherever he showed up - but particularly here.
Batman: TAS (largely because of the restrictions of being a kids cartoon) really loved to delve into the psychology and trauma of both Batman, and his villains. When you reimagine a complete goober with ice powers, into a powerful, tragic, Shakespearian marvel like this, and then you give this character a voice like Mr. Ansara's? Perfection.
I swear every Mr. Freeze episode in this show is guaranteed to be a standout with great writing. This episode also ties directly into the sequel movie Batman: Subzero, which I would highly recommend. I also love how Grant Walker and his so-called utopia are a direct twisted parody of Walt Disney himself, his vision for the Disneyland Expo, and how determined he was to create his own little community back then. 2:06 That doll was a reference to a Batman character known as *Bat-Mite* , who is a 5th-dimensional Imp just like Mr Myxzptlk. Still, instead of trying to mess with Superman, Bat-Mite is a massive Batman fanboy who acts as a nuisance to Batman with reality-warping powers that always show up at the worst time for Batman to supposedly "help him", if you want to learn more about him Id highly recommend the animated show *Batman: Brave and The Bold* which is one of the best Batman/DC shows that celebrates and embraces the Golden/Silver Age of DC comics without trying too hard to be severe and embraces what makes that era of comics so much fun, popular and endearing.
Brave and the Bold was my show back in the day I love t=how they did the muisc in that show too
RIP Paul Reubens, the voice of Bat-Mite in Brave and the Bold.
I dislike the TNBA episode. It feels cheap and he should have been retired after subzero
@@henrybelman7424 fair but that Batman beyond episode is good I like the continuity of it
@@Narutoanime16g True...
People hold up Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill for their work on this show (and rightly so), but Michael Ansara's turn as Mr. Freeze was chilling and ironically, also carrying tremendous warmth.
His work as Mr. Freeze is iconic and is the reason I would have loved to see Alan Rickman, were he still with us, play a live action Mr. Freeze due to the way he spoke.
It was a nice Easter Egg to name the robot inventor "Rossum".
Freeze will do anything to bring his wife back to life, how romantic.
the most poetic part is the lack of the physical aspect of romance in the relationship. Victor knows that's not happening, but that doesn't matter to him. All that matters is that SHE gets well.
Mr. Freeze is one of my favorite because he is not evil, he is just heart broken and is actually moved and motivated by the power of love. Batman knows this and he always tries to help him and save him from a self-destruction.
A lot of comic book villains aren't really evil. Mr. Freeze is one example because he just wants to find a cure for his wife but he goes about it the wrong way.
2:05 that's a reference to Bat-Mite, a little imp from another dimension in the comic books. He always tries to help out Batman, but his magical powers only make things harder on ol' Batsy. Bat-Mite first appears in Detective Comics issue 267
I love the 4th wall breaking line from Rossom “I never could get him to work right” referencing how Timm, Dini, & Co. could never figure out how to do Bat-Mite right.
And then in the next shot there's Mister Mxyzptlk, Krypto and Streaky.
He's a recurring character in batman the brave and the bold! It's a really fun cartoon
@@R.J.Godzilla81 At least Dini got him working in time for Brave And The Bold
@@d-manthecaptain1382 oh Bat-Mite was PERFECTLY suited for Brave and the Bold and it’s tone
Grant Walker is pretty much an evil Walt Disney.
He made many theme parks from interesting robotics, including his own city of tomorrow. And he wants Mr Freeze to freeze him to make him immortal.
Its a funny way they did that. 😅
Yep. Disney is evil, that's the moral of the story. 😄
That last ones an urban myth but the rest is correct.
@@Avenger85438 I know that I'm just saying it's a fun reference
Or Andrew Ryan.
@@WhiteFangofWar The ocean city did make me think of Ryan.
The greatest thing in this episode has to be the contrast between the villains.
Mr Freeze has a frozen exterior yet despite it being wounded by tragedy he still possesses a heart when it matters, meanwhile Grant Walker presents a warm friendly personality but his heart is dead to the pain of others.
Of note; Rossum was voiced by William Sanderson and his toy making is a nod to the character J.R. Sebastian he played in the film Bladerunner 😯
Mr Freeze is one of the most tragic villain in the DC universe, if not in all of villain history!
Kite-Man?
Darth Vader? Maul?
Nah, if anyone in Batman's Rogue's gallery deserves that title, it's Poison Ivy.
For all of villain history I'll raise you Magneto on his bad days.
@@Blastback8 like I said, "one of"
I keep saying this: Mr Freeze is the only villain that I might actually help, his motivation is good enough for me and also all of his crimes are related to save his wife. I respect that
2:07 Batmite 😃
5:53 - 6:11
I'm afraid there is, a couple examples actually. Well more general story's involving Mr. Freeze. There's one where he was turned into a creepy obsessive stalker that presumed the woman he liked was his wife and another recent comic where a magical shaul (I think?) was trying to be used to revive her but Batman carelessly kicks over the table that has her body on it.
Plus there's the multiple ways Nora reacts to being revived. Some is her accepting her death, some that she's upset that Victor went against her wishes, stuff like that.
Has she reacted to the original "Heart of Ice"? That episode won an Emmy for Outstanding Writing in an Animated Program.
She has
@@a_fine_edition2746 Thank you for letting me know. I found it under a different channel, just called "MegMage". I would put the link, but UA-cam tends to block posts with links in them.
The robot that kidnaps Freeze is a reference to the 1941 Superman short film, The Mechanical Monsters
Nice reaction to the Mr. Freeze episodes, remeber after finishing the season, watch the Batman & Mr.Freeze Sub Zero movie.
Hope meg reacts to batman sub zero movie one day
Timm and Dini did a phenomenal job in re-creating Mister Freeze's background. Developing him as a complicating villain, instead of a full-pledged villain made him so relatable. If you haven't yet, watch Batman: Subzero animated movie. It helps show the comparison to both Batman and Freeze's traumas.
Batman and Freeze team up to defeat evil cosplayer. I wonder if Gotham has a ban on kids dressing as the rogues for Halloween?
This is one of the reasons why Mr. Freeze is one of my favorite Batman villains. He doesn't do what he does out of greed, or to take over the world. All he ever wants is to save his dying wife. How he's going about it is wrong, yes. But can you really blame him?
Maybe one day you’ll react to the Batman Beyond show down the line, see where it’s all been leading up you to with Mr. Freeze.
Also, I never noticed how the toy maker in the beginning of the episode sounds EXACTLY like J.B Sebastian in Bladerunner
The actor who played him is voicing the character, an easter egg for fans.
he even uses some of the same lines from Bladerunner about making friends. It's one of the most subtle easter eggs I've heard in a show, if you don't know the movie and his voice you'll never notice it.
Meg you gotta get on the My Adventures with Superman train.
Before you watch the next regular episode with Mr. Freeze you need to watch the movie 'Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero,' which is set in the same continuity between this episode and 'Cold Comfort.' I don't like where 'Cold Comfort' goes with Freeze, but it follows on events in the movie.
Rossum's making 'little friends' is a reference to the actor's (William Sanderson) role as J. F. Sebastian in 'Blade Runner.'
I remember playing the Sega Genesis game based off of Adventures of Batman and Robin animated series, that came out as this show was airing and loving it. For a 16-bit Sega game, it kept the art style of the show pretty faithful, (the Super Nintendo game looked better, but it was an entirely different game, and I didn't own one, I was a Sega baby). It was a run and gun type game like Contra or Gunstar Heroes, fighting a huge boss in the middle or end of every section, typical for the genre at the time, just Batman villains as the bosses. What made me really love this game, even to this day, was not only it's art style, and soundtrack, (the soundtrack slapped woman, SLAPPED, where did THIS sound mixing come from Sega, Goddamn?), but Mr Freeze being the main villain. This episode especially has a lot of shots of Mr Freeze, just completely shadowed or face hidden with just his red eyes that were in that game. Again, the Super Nintendo game was graphically superior with larger character models and had the iconic music from the show, but there was just something about those Genesis visuals, run and gun gameplay almost creepy renditition of Bruce Timm's designs in heavy shadowed art of all of the BTAS characters and amazing original soundtrack that absolutely bopped, made the Sega version stand out in my youth
I think you've seen one of the Rossum episodes with HARDAK, the massive supercomputer? Rossum is designed after and voiced by the actor for J.F. Sebastian, the genius toymaker from the first BladeRunner. You still have one more episode with him, My Silicone Soul
There is a movie that concludes this story arc called ‘Batman and Mister Freeze: Subzero’ be worth checking out.
Rossum’s Bat-Mite robot’s a nod to a character from the comics. The Bat Mite’s a 5th dimensional imp who is a huge Batman fan. He’s like a friendly Mr Mxyzptlk.
Freeze being so devoated to Nora is the sweetest thing he's the only villian who isn't really a villian and has a motive you can support everyone else has worse mental health especially Joker lol Gotham needs better mental health facilities
Thanks for the video Meg! :)
Grant Walker is voiced by 'The Old Man' from RoboCop! :O
Weirdly, Walker’s theme park shares its name with the superstate from George Orwell’s 1984.
It’s a place isolated from the rest of the world which is on the brink of war.
It is filled with technology, including big screens from which Walker communicates with his people. The same way “Big Brother’, the dictator figure of 1984 does so. Both control their people with false ideals.
The novels protagonist Winston is different and loves Julia, another citizen. I find them in Freeze and Nora. It’s their love for each other that makes them resist against the regime.
Just don’t take a look at 60 Mr Freeze basically the original depiction. This series was where his character is massively improved
Maybe it's just coincidental, but I feel like the aesthetics of this episode could very well have been part of the inspiration for Bioshock.
And going the other way, the robots in this episode feel very much inspired by the robot troopers in Castle in the Sky.
While definitely not as incredible as "Heart of Ice", this is a pretty solid episode overall. It's quite Shakespearian the way Mr. Freeze's descent has been in this series. You really can't help but feel for the guy. Fortunately, we do have "Batman & Mr. Freeze: Sub-Zero" to further elaborate on his story!
2:25 Nice Easter egg of Krypto and the Silver Age Mr. Mxyzptlk as some of the toys!
Freeze Story and this episode is a prelude to The Second Batman tas movie Batman Subzero I'm hoping you Watch and React to that one day.
Really: finish this season (only one episode left I think) and the movie Batman :Subzero
The next Superman episode is a crossover and takes place at least 2 years after those events
Great todays special guest villain is Mister Freeze
have a nice Sunday and Week Meg.💞🐕🐩💞
He was barely a villain in this episode. Whats ironic is that in his three appearances, its never just him as a bad guy. Theres always another worse guy. Ferris Boyle, Grant Walker and Gregory Belson.
Of note; the animators would start with black paper and then paint color onto that instead of starting with white paper and painting it black. 😯
I can't wait for Meg to react to Batman Beyond that show is so good.
I'm really hoping you get around to the Burton/Schumacher film series some time soon. Would love to see your reaction to the first two Burton films that inspired TAS, as well as my two favorite live-action Batman movies that got me into the character and his mythos.
Hi Meg hope you are having an great and awesome day ❤
Now you need to watch the Batman movie, Batman: Subzero. It is pretty much a sequel movie to this episode.
hello meg Mr Freeze only a few of tas he the most heart breaking Grat walker is bond villon in Walt Disney
Villian or not, I feel horrible for just one of them that hurts me besides The Joker, and that's Mr. Freeze/Victor Fries 😔
And poor Nora. He just wants his wife to comeback healthy again.
Has to be said, I nice little nod to Hayao Miyazaki in this one and his classic, Castle in the Sky, the robots are nearly identical. I also get the sneaking suspicion, that the writers had recently watched or rewatched Moonraker and The Spy Who Loved Me.
Always feel bad for Mr Freeze
You should check out Batman Broken Promise its a great fan animation film.
Star wars... 🎉
6:05 Ever heard of Batman & Robin?
Lover this UA-camr!
Mr. Freeze is such a unique character and certainly someone who could be helped I feel if he was willing to work alongside Batman or rather with Bruce Wayne since Bruce is the shning example of what a good billionaire does with his money. With Wayne Enterprises funding him, he could find a cure for Nora and himself, and return to civilized society as a model citizen who cracked cryogenics. Of coures, that's a pipe dream since Mr. Freeze has beef with big companies since that didn't work out last time, and this has to ignore what happens with Freeze in later animated iterations.
Paul Dini doesn't really like this episode since it was planned in his head from the start that Nora was dead from the start, thus what drives Victor towards vengence. Which is a shame since that motivation makes Mr. Freeze so good cause he doesn't work as a generic villian for the sake of evil IMO. Though, I might have gotten the person wrong, but that's what I've heard
Waiting for justice league and unlimited
batman beyond first
Batmite 😮
Freez only wanted to bring his wife back to life, he is not thinking of him self.He know what he is doing, and he is stoping aat nothing to bring her back.
I really hope you eventually react to The New Batman Adventures (It's a direct continuation to BTAS), it has some awesome episodes
Bet you would love ones like Mad Love, Never Fear and Over The Edge!
Hey Meg!
Really love ur channel and i gotta ask, do u plan to react to green lantern the animated series once?
It's beautiful and it answers all of your questions about the GL lore!
It may even convince u to get Geoff John's comic book run of GL 😅
Yes!! Especially since I just finished BTAS S2, I will definitely at least try the first few episodes!
@@MegMageReacts Oh yeah that's another show I'm excited for you to start. And considering it doesn't take place in the same universe as BTAS and STAS, you can literally watch it whenever. Also it's only one season with about 26 episodes
hi Meg
Oh no
Walt Disney isn't content with only owning Marvel! Now he's abducting all the good DC characters too!
🤣🤣🤣
Would you kindly come to Oceana.
I dont rhink ive seen this episode. Bat-mite appearance threw me off a little. Lol.
It's likley a coincidence, (because they were probably both based on the same influences like Howard Hughes and Walt Disney), but Grant Walker is essentially Andrew Ryan from Bioshock, before Bioshock was even a thing.
Nora Fries is a big character in "Harley Quinn"; if you're thinking of cosplaying her I'd definitely recommend that show, which everybody should watch anyway.
👀
Mr Freeze is in every version the same. He never gets to be happy :(
Please watch Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero!! It's a direct follow-up movie to this episode
