Judy Dench was in my first paid acting job, 'The Hound of The Baskervilles' for BBC Radio 4... I was just a snotty young actor who'd not even graduated, and she treated me like a fellow professional and a mate. A very special lady and someone I learnt a great deal from. ❤

@vincelang3779 I completely agree, Vince. I'll tell you a quick story on that: Judy wasn't even supposed to be in it that day!! But the actress who normally played Mrs. Hudson was already contracted to another job. So Enid Williams, the Producer was going to play her. I turned up at Broadcasting House and who should walk into the lift after me but Judy and her wonderful late husband, Michael Williams who as you know played Dr. Watson.
To cut a long story short, Enid asked, "I don't suppose you fancy playing Mrs Hudson, do you?" Judy jumped at the chance because she's a Sherlock Holmes buff and I inadvertently started my career playing alongside the great lady!
It was a great day, Vince. I got to chat to Clive Merrison, Donald Sindon (who was absolutely splendid) and a few other seasoned pros. I've done a lot of jobs since and worked with a lot of interesting and lovely actors, but that small job will always be my favourite. Thanks for reminding me of it.
      All the very best, Mate,
      Simon-Peter

My favorite of Daniel Craig’s era of James Bond. It hit just the right balance of feeling both a classic Bond film of old and a modern Bond film. Javier Bardem as Silva is an outstanding Bond Villain. And it was emotional seeing Judi Dench get a fantastic last hurrah as M before handing the reins over to Ralph Fiennes.

Silva's introduction scene is one of my favorite movie scenes of all time. It establishes his character, right off the bat, and the shot itself is mesmerizing. We are, like Bond, watching him grow closer and closer as he reaches the end of his story, and I was captivated the whole time. Also, I love how Silva makes sure in this scene that Bond (and therefore the audience) can't get a good read on him, because he changes his personality and tactics to fit what he thinks will work against Bond. As soon as he realized the sexual stuff wasn't fazing Bond, he switched tactics. It's unsettling to Bond and us to not be able to figure him out, and it makes for tense, captivating character interactions.

Skyfall was released on the 50th Anniversary of the James Bond movies (Dr. No was released in 1962) and what I love about it is that it has just the right amount of fanservice, including legacy characters like Q and Miss Moneypenny, slowly bringing in Bond gadgets, plus the kitted out Astin Martin from "Goldfinger", great references like James Bond saying "For Your Eyes Only" referencing the movie "For Your Eyes Only" (1981) and so much more. It's definitely a James Bond movie for the long time Bond fans.
Also, the cinematography in this movie is stunning, Roger Deakins deserves so much praise.

@pistonburner6448 And just what was it Ian Fleming made James Bond to be? Right from the start the literary character was always consistently portrayed as a morose, pouty, self-absorbed, hate-filled, misanthropic, misogynistic, chain-smoking drunk motivated primarily by an overwhelming scorn for everything he personally considered un-British, un-white, un-manly, and un-Bond. And right from the start the movies ALWAYS made Bond something else, insofar as turning him into a character that paying moviegoers wouldn't find completely repellent.

Because this came out for the 50th anniversary of the franchise, the role of Kincade was written for none other than Sean Connery. However, Connery was living as a tax exile in the Bahamas (which severely limits the amount of time Connery could stay in the country). The producers also felt the casting would be too distracting, so they cast Albert Finney. Unfortunately, this was Finney’s final role due to kidney cancer, and was going through chemotherapy during filming.

What I always loved about the Craig era films was the understanding that the agents were all damaged people who chose to serve understanding they were nothing but expendable tools. This one shows it as the main plot Bond took his little holiday because he'd lost faith in M's judgment. He wasn't angry he got shot he was angry she didn't trust him. Silver couldn't accept his own recklessness put him in the position where M was forced to give him up to Chinese intelligence. Silver's loyalty was to M personally so her betrayal caused him to strike out on his own while Bond may respect and admire M his loyalty has always been to the country so loosing faith in her would never cause him to turn traitor.

Putting the James Bond movie franchise aside for a second…SKYFALL is a brilliant movie in isolation and in itself it highlights the true essence of great movie making. To think it was nominated for 5 Oscar’s (never before matched by another OO7 movie) and won 2 of them is testament to Daniel Craig, his fellow actors and the team behind the set.
An incredible movie and most definitely in my top 20 movies of all time (I’m a movie geek). Faultless performances and a great plot and twist.
I cried when M passed because not only is Dame Judi Dench exquisite in the role but Craig shows Bond’s true feelings for M because as an orphan, she was in fact the motherly figure he never had.
If you also note that Kincaid calls M - Emma…is this deliberate or an old man presuming that M stands for “Em” as in Emma?
Albert Finney and Ralph Fiennes are masterful and Javier Bardem - what a villain!!! Genius but not as scary as his role in No Country For Old Men.
The best Bond movie - eclipses both Goldfinger and Casino Royale in my opinion.
Spectre (for me) isn’t far behind it although underrated by quite the crowd. I look forward to your reaction and the stunts are truly amazing.

As a loving tribute, the house they used for 007 meeting with M after the MI6 bombing was the former house of John Barry, the late composer of eleven James Bond films (before the Craig-era timeline).

One of my favorite Judy Dench films (after the Bonds) is Shakespeare in Love. It isn't a huge role, but a significant one, and you get that great Judy Dench sass as Queen Elizabeth I. You also get the new M's (Ralph Fiennes) brother, Joseph Fiennes, as William Shakespeare. I know not everyone loved that movie as much as I did, but, as someone who studied medieval and rennaisance literature (particularly Elizabethean theater) I found it particularly enjoyable.
Skyfall was also Javier Bardem's creepiest role since No Country for Old Men (another must see movie).

Highest-grossing Bond film of all time.
    Released during the 50th Anniversary.
Bond remembering his tragic past, rebuilding his body & soul,
recharging his character to being the best in the game.
Judi Dench as the only female 'M'.
Playing the role within 17 years and 2 eras.
Tied with the late Bernard Lee, who played the role first in these films.
Saw this in IMAX and i was blown away.
Bardem as the villain, Introducing franchise favorites (Q & Moneypenny) finally,
getting a new M and the theme by Adele is so good.
A definite bounce-back from the previous film.
Showing us once again in the spy genre why no does it better than 007.

Even before I went to see it opening weekend, I had read about a month or so before that it was Judy Dench's last time as M, due to a health thing and she felt it was time to move on. She'd been M since Brosnan had been Bond. I didn't know that she'd be killed off, just thought maybe injured enough to decide to retire. Anyways, not sure if you realized it but this movie had 2 alums from Harry Potter with Ralph Fiennes and the black haired actress who was questioning M on the panel. She had played Draco Malfoy's Mother. And hate to say, she passed from Cancer, I think last year. And BTW....they weren't saying Mum, but Ma'am, which with the Brit accent sounds like- Mum. 😊

There's a theory that some original plot elements ended up on the production room floor, one being that the villain was M's son (adopted or otherwise) but she had had to give him up when working in Hong Kong. That odd phrase on her computer "Think on your sins" is an anagram of "your son isn't in HK".
