What about Ghost Ship?? When the cable snaps in the peaceful opening scene dance and chops everyone in half. That was a shock start.
That’s horror. Supernatural horror to be exact.
@@MoonlightPrincess07 ah yah got me, I didn’t read the title correctly 🙈
Best part of the whole movie, really the only good part
That was one hell of a scene. Yep, good pick. 👍
Not sci fi
“Opening scene “ is doing a lot of heavy lifting. Some of the clips mentioned didn’t happen until 30 mins in.
Same can be said for "Science Fiction". More horror / gore for most of them.
Seriously. More like opening Act than opening scene.
@@milescoburn1845Genuine question. Isn’t something like a zombie virus, ghost, demon, Reanimator, From Beyond, science fiction?
For instance many of Lovecraft’s stories weren’t magic and they attempted to explain via science. Some at least.
Quite true.
Y’all didn’t even mention anything about an opening scene of the mist, you just described the movie. What the heck y’all even doing anymore???
Thank you! I was only half heartedly paying attention to that one, but afterwards I thought, “did I miss the punchline? What’s the ‘scene’?”
Seriously!! As much as I loved the Mist, a tree crashing thru the window hardly merits an entry on this list!
"You killed him"
"No I did not!!... I gave him life."
Always love that opening.
Sutherland is one of those few actors who had so many great roles, it's hard to single any out. Oddball in Kelly's Heroes (1970) is one of his most fun. His spies in The Eagle Has Landed (1976) and Eye of the Needle (1981) are among my favorites. His role in the latter film was a chilling sociopath spy who would simply shut off his personality when taking care of business.
Donald Sutherland's finest performance: Kelly's Heroes...how could it be anything else?
Yep, Oddball is definitely his best. "Don't hit me with them negative waves so early in the morning," is my go-to response when something goes sideways at work early in the day.
Or the Dirty Dozen. 'They look pretty, but can they fight?'
Animal House ? ;)
Klute was another of his best ....
100 percent… to a nyer like you… a hero is some sort of weird sandwich… not some nut who takes on 3 tigas!
“Cube”, taught me a novel escape technique.
“Put a button in your mouth, it keeps the juices flowing.”; paraphrased.
Jeffery Coombes is an icon to Star Trek fans too 👌
Mist doesn't count because the creepy/scary didn't start until quite a ways in. Wasn't near the opening.
The Twilight Zone opening with Brooks' lyrics to the National Geographic theme is still a fave in my family "Look at those two apes, let's go see where they live...."
The greatest Donald Sutherland performance of all time, hands down, is in "JFK". While that was a great movie from start to finish, his scene alone can be watched over and over, giving you chills each time. Amazing performance, you really believe he was an insider and knew absolutely everything, every dirty secret, witnessed every back-room conversation and phone call. Second best performance was in "Outbreak". I liked him in Beerfest, too.
Favorite Donald Sutherland film? The Puppet Masters. Absolutely nailed the role of Andrew Nivens from the book perfectly. This is the best Heinlein adaptation (sorry, Starship Troopers, you lose because no Power Armor) and my favorite Sutherland role.
Best Sutherland? Don't Look Now, followed closely by Klute.
Ok what the opening of event horizon couldn't make it on this list
Because it wasn't scary
@@jdsim9173 Have to agree, that man beginning to scream long before the closeup is not
actually that scary at all.
@@syntrilliumc.e.p.9326 hahaha can you tell I'm a big fan of event horizon I love it every time a vet horizon makes it on this list or the what culture horror channel
@@richardjamesgallardojr.7584 I'm with you on that, I love Event Horizon :D
Cube walked so Saw could run
Donald Sutherland always brought his A game but the role that stands out for me, for the acting is as Ronald Bartel, an incarcerated arsonist in Backdraft. A small part but he absolutely nails it. I also want to give a shout out to his portrayal of Hawkeye Pierce in the Mash movie.
Sgt Oddball in Kelly's heroes
Donald Sutherland in "Kelly's Heroes."
Klute ...JFK.... The Dirty Dozen ..Eye of the Needle...A Time to Kill...
SPACE COWBOYS...
"A hatch on four walls" Four walls, in a cube? Get yourself back to school.
I don't think he named the movie.
@@StubbyandShifuwho is he?
Wouldn’t a cube have four walls, a ceiling, and a floor?
@@wafflebrozbut there is a hatch on all 6 walls..... Point being those inside the cube don't know which way is up, down, left, right.
@@Tony1975uk I would argue that because of gravity, they definitely know which way is up and down. And yes, a cube has 6 SIDES, but not walls.
My favorite Donald Sutherland role was oddball from Kelly's heroes
Favourite Donald Sutherland film: Backdraft. Not a huge role, but brilliant.
The Mist - 2 hours of my life that I'll never get back.
Note to Frank Darabont - not everything Stephen King writes turns to cinematic gold.
@Whatculture - You show your lack of culture by claiming that H P Lovecraft was a 'White Supremacist' which is completely wrong. Lovecraft's views about people of other skin colours was basically normal for his time. His views were the same as the majority of people at the time. Just because modern views have changed, does not mean he was racist and certainly not a white supremacist. he may be viewed that way by some these days but most of us accept that those were different times with different standards a acceptable views.
Odd Ball, in Kelly’s Heroes -100%
Donald's greatest performance ? Final Fantasy : The Spirits Within. Or Oddball in Kelly's Heroes.
Kelly's Heroes, easily Sutherland's best work.
I still nominate Wargames . . .
Jurassic Park's opening scene is quite good, and sets the stage nicely for the ominous nature of the story. What's cool is also that this scene tells the other side of the first real action sequence in the novel, the chapter titled 'The bite of the raptor!'
How bout a movie that opens with a town full of dead people, buzzards picking at the remains. Not scary enough? Andromeda Strain.
Another awesome Chriton adaptation with an ominous opening sequence!
Most of these aren't Sci-Fi. They are Horror / Gore.
One thing that intrigues me about Cube's introduction is: What was Alderson's skill/purpose? What was he suppose to bring to the table?
Don't y'all have an entire channel devoted to this kind of thing?
My favorite Donald Sutherland film? 1900, 'Novecento'.
The way he plays his character is absulotely brutal and haunting.
What if people like that actually exist?
Well, turns out - they do.
The stuff of nightmares.
Cube is a great classic Canadian film
The Mist reminds me of Half-Life
The Cell
Ghost ship. How can you leave that out. It’s the best opening ever.
Oddball...Kelly's Heroes!!!
The Eagle Has Landed🇨🇮🐕🐕
Fallen...
You should call this shocking first act not opening
Backdraft, hello shadow. Chilling
H p lovecraft is awesome best horror writer oh the last century
He was one of the first to inject science fiction tones into his fantasy and horror. I think only Giger could have done justice to Cthulhu / Rl'yeh and the city and creatures in At the Mountains Of Madness. RIP But I doubt it.
The mist doesn’t start for 25 mins so it doesn’t count
I didn't know that the Mist qualifies as a Sci Fi movie.
P.S my favorite Donald Southerland movie is Backdraft.
My favorite Donald Sutherland film is Six Degrees of Separation
Oddball
Best Donald Sutherland performance would have to be Don't Look Now, IMO
Oops, it's John Landis. My bad.
Just here to remind everyone that Joe Dante murdered 3 actors by lying, breaking rules, and being negligent. During the filming of the Twilight Zone.
You got your directors mixed up. John Landis was the director involved in the Twilight Zone movie catastrophe
@@Giambijuicebeat me to it
Donald Sutherlands best role… ODDBALL.. from Kellys Heroes
Best Donald Sutherland performance in my opinion is "Eye of the Needle" (1981).
Ordinary People
Best Donald Sutherland role? The thieeevving shtable boy/ German Grandpa in Beerfest
2:21 is that Darth Maul himself?
REC is better then Quarantine.
I have seen each one. (I like these kind of movies) 😉
Don't think Darabont worked on The Wire....
Oddball.
I may be mistaken but I dont think that was fog. I cant remember what its called, the word eludes my mind almost as if it is obscured by some kind of....yeah i dont know.
Smoke! Thats it.
Sutherland = Ordinary People
Who should I hate more, the writer or presenter?
Klute
While it's list of good flicks for sure, this is a disappointing video. It's really just a bunch of synopsis' with very little (if any) discussion about the opening scene in said movies.
REC > Quarantine
Thank you. I was looking to see if someone had mentioned that they put the very inferior US remake in the list instead of the Spanish original.

Unsubscribe. Let me know when the channel gets some teeth and the titles actually mean something instead of, "random list of stuff we wanted to show you and we created this irrelevant title for funsies!"
Donald Sutherland=
SPACE COWBOYS...👍👍
🎥🍿🎞🧙🏻♂
SIX walls. . .a cube has SIX walls
*cough* Six SIDES, not walls :)
First🤝🏼
And if you have been to SF recently you an see that the bodysnatchers are still there - or at least various alien lifeforms.
Mist doesn't count because the creepy/scary didn't start until quite a ways in. Wasn't near the opening.
Ghost ship. How can you leave that out. It’s the best opening ever.
