The reason Mangini won is because he was like a piano player on the drums. He listened to everyone as much as he pushed for himself. He did more research, and knew exactly how the other members thought and played. He showed his licks and ambidexterity, but listened as well instead of trying to lead the original guys. He showed respect.
TBH this specific example is not the greatest jam in the history of jams... lol. John Myung is just kinda going in auto pilot while john petrucci plays some not particularly incredbly pleasing melodies while everybody is basically just here to look at Mike and see if he can be esoterically gifted enough to not rush into whatever minefield of a drum piece this is that they wrote to test him with lol. :P
Its crazy, Mangini is watching like a hawk for any hints where its going, none of the guys are giving him anything because they are so used to playing with each other but still Mike sticks the landing, brilliant to watch and hear.
I saw an interview with Magini and he said when Dream Theater emailed him and asked him to audition, he was able to see all the other drummers they had sent an invite to, so he practised hard all the stuff the other drummers were specialists at before he went to the audition. Genius!
Fuck my tits man.. from 10:00 and out they sounded more like Dream Theater than they have sounded in years and years!! At 11:40 and out.. mind blown that this was a fuckin JAM. Dream Theater; THAT is how your next album need to sound!

I stopped listening anything new DT made when Octavarium came out. Just saw them the other day in Prague. Good as always, but.... Portnoy was better fit.
its the audio engineer :[ his taste and mixing preferences are no where near as good as the guy who recorded and mixed systematic chaos or black clouds; i think his name is paul northfield
Stev3n C the audio engineer is only executing what the Artist/producer wants Sound wise , i think MP knew what type of Drum sound he wanted and i think that all Pre-ADTOE prove that , i think it is about time for an outside producer in DT ( Steven Wilson ) ,
That is actually a pretty good point HOLLOWOXDT1. Besides Mangini's kit has a whole different kind of tone to it. I do agree the new self-titled album is engineered pretty well just lacks the punch from Portnoy's kit :P
I agree with him. Each company has their own ways. Portnoy used Tama drums, Sabian cymbals, LP Percussion and some other stuff I don't know about where Mangini uses Pearl drums and percussion, Zildjian cymbals and other stuff I don't know about. Each company has their own way, and to be honest, Zildjian and Sabian are basically the same thing, but Sabian formed after someone in the Zildjian left.
Tama or pearl has nothing to do with it. Wood is wood. maybe there's a small difference in the bearing edge but that's about it. It's just the way it'srecorded. Bad producing in myopinion.Listen to the new Haken EP. The drums on the songs really breath and feel alive. if you listen the new dream theater album, the drums dont cut and just sound like a bunch of samples.
Russell Alen should be the lead singer, I hope someday before a tour Labrie falls sick as Annette was in Nightwish, and they call Alen for a "temporary" replacement rsrs
If you know the nightwish history, you will ser that the sickness was juck a Flu ... Nothing to worry, but just a thing that impeds him to sing for a few concerts
Wow, it must be fun trying to follow jordan while jamming. The wizard plays exactly what's on his mind, so, you would never know what is he going to play. Such great musicians :')
I went to a drum festival at Berklee College of Music back in the day when Mangini was teaching, what an awesome hyper dude! He was telling us he helped Portnoy get his double bass faster amongst other different techniques. Crazy watching him audition for them.
I love it how Petrucci lets go of the pressure of being the interviewer towards the end of the video and concentrates on the playing and jamming. This whole session could have been a mix of new album songs of DT and LTE. I also have to agree with the commenter who is amazed at the tune after 8:30. Simply amazing.
well I think that it's just a different point of view. We're used to listen their "intellectual" work in the albums, and this is their spontaneous music level, in a jam session. It's another way to approach music. I find both of them great.
That;s the only downfall of "Dream Theater" the album. The videos put up from the tour so far sound better, despite the quality of some of the videos, so i think. It would make sense, and plus I love the snare drum sound in this video
miguel lopez More real is always better, i never understood why all these studios are constantly doing these awful mastering with the volume of everything turned at max and why all the instruments are always overcompressed, this why some of the latest album sounds like shit (typical Roadrunner mixing/mastering with half digitaly triggered drumkits, fake sound and shit), cause the volume is so loud that if you don't have some decent speakers it will
the sampler era, unrealistic sounds with more attack, the first albums were a very tasteable warm sound insteed of this new clean vibe, like on the Mike Portnoy s snare.. that was so perfect
Although Mike is not my favorite drummer, I admit that this improvisation session is beyond mindblowing. Being able to express those ideas proves that he is one of a kind drummer.
I will confess before I make my comment I am not a huge DT fan but I can certainly appreciate the musicianship. Those that know my comments know I am a fan of 3 min punk rock but with regards to the drum battle going on below I can say from a drummers point of view when it gets to this level it is irrelevant who is better than whom as the quality being played is something one should just sit back listen and appreciate. These chaps certainly expect a lot from their drummer. One almighty audition and this chap does not disappoint. To those that have been knocking Mike Portnoy please re-listen as throughout all those awkward time signatures Mike Portnoy is phenomenal. From a drummers point of view I try not to listen too much as makes me realise the gap between the semi pros and the top of the pro tree and it is absolutely huge. Mike Mangini steps into Mike Portnoys shoes and I would say even having the ability to attempt that shows that this chap will very soon become a household name as to play in those complex patterns in those time signatures is worthy of admiration.
My respects to mangini, audition my ass, its seem more like test your might" hahah these dudes are just trying to make him fail like crazy but he smashed it!

I just watched the whole other audition videos and it instantly clicked with Mike. His drumming was on point, no question, but there was something about the way he talked and essentially just ‘was’. You could feel he really really wanted to be with those guys, not in a fanboy kind of way but as someone on the same level as them, you could just feel his natural confidence that he can and want to contribute to this band, create art with them just for the sake of it. To me it looks like at the time of the auditions he was at a point in his life where he was full of energy waiting to be set free and this is exactly what DT needed. And despite his outgoing and extraverted nature there was absolutely no ego involved. When he got the phone call in the end he said “Thank you for trusting me” and this is actually concludes it perfectly. He seems to be not only an amazing musician but also an interesting, wise and inspiring human who is much in peace with himself.
