- "The Dance of instrumentals" they say. I would say "The Dance of Geniality".
This is a tribute to one of the best gathering of musicians of all times. The best progressive band ever. Portnoy only version.

The sound engineer for these guys needs some sort of lifetime achievement award.
Too bad he wasn't mixing on the show I saw two weeks ago. DT was great but the mixing not so much.
Dont believe everything you see on tv!the whole thing is post processed after in studio with editing and mixing-mastering for the live-dvd Purposes/Many close shots are from the rehearshals of the noun. The wide shots of the camera are from the night live.I happen to be a professional musician and i had the chance having appearances on tv and dvd. This is why you see those special live Dvd's and the performance is out of this world, its not that they dont play really good, but if you go at a live you will understand that this is not close to the finalized material.
@@GeorgeKam please use indonesian language...i dont understand english

He can get a mini bag of Haribo Bears from me.
HE’S BACK!!!!! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁
Yessss
Let’s be real. This is not your 1st time watching this .
No, is not... And it will not be hehe
Well actually it is. So yeh.
Oh, yes it is! Wasn't even really a big fan of Portnoy or DT, but this is really good. Sort of hearkening back to the early to mid-70's era of progressive rock.
*I N C O R R E C T*
Millionth time lmao
5:30 when he turns his head to look at the camera, and we that glimpse of "You're getting this, right?" Such an absolute humble, enthusiastic, and focused energy.. Love, love, love watching him!
i have to admit, this is one of LaBrie's best performances.
He's probably back stage taking a dump
hahahhahaha monster
He's playing super mario world.
Dance without LaBrie
why so savage man! :'(
My god... He is just playing arguably the most difficult and complex drum parts of rock and metal community like it is a walk in the park. I just can't help but admire this beauty.
well he wrote it ;)
And smiling... I'd be counting
Can't imagine how many times he's practiced and played this to perfection, it's like playing 10 songs in one
Emre Aki> Agreed.
They are few people like him : they live on the same planet than us, but clearly... we are not living in the same world :)
Look up Travis Orbin

🥚 the video's intro, not the song
28Naufal oh okay, well the time stamps are wrong. He says it starts at 9 seconds, it starts at 0 seconds.
Man Dream Theater in my opinion are the most talented musicians I've ever listened to. Awesome musicians. Love listening 🎧 to these guys 👍🎸.
I wonder if the crowd there knew at that time, that they are witnessing one of the best DT performances ever to happen.
one of the best performances of music, period!
That's actually a pretty shitty crowd, so I am guessing not...
@Fenriz They actually do. They are just really good at pulling off a fake facade that fools the rest of the people. They are polite in Japan due to social pressure. Basically they don't act like an ass because if they do, their neighbors and co-workers will know, and they will get fingers pointed at them. Can't have that.
Not sure, the instrumedley is pretty much the highpoint of the concert, the rest of it is pretty mediocre, excluding the great ending (3rd CD).
Mark Wonder definitely I couldn’t agree more.
3:05 I fucking love how he just pulls a stick out of fucking nowhere like it didn't happen.
Drummers have secret stick deposits scattered all around their kit in case things like that happen.
He missed!
best part of MP's drumming is that his patterns gives a randomized feel, like he never brings the same rhythm again in the same song. This gives so much fun to hear, always makes you wait and wondering what comes next.
Every musician's dream to have a drummer this solid play behind you. Mike Porntoy for ever!
the difference between them is not about the technique or skills. they are both masters.
the difference is in the soul. Mangini is a drummer for dream theater and Portnoy is dream theater
by your logic Mangini is a drummer for Portnoy?
kinda
makes almost sense, except mangini sucks big time compared to MP, DT has no soul anymore, its been reduced to pure "theater"
Well said man well said...
Ernesto Mancera 😉 absolutly true 👍
Mangini is an outstanding drummer and he has more techniques than a ninja engineer but he will never display the same love and spirit as Portnoy. P makes it look so fun to do and even easy at some points.
+Luis Puerta THAT is exactly the best way to put it bro
+Luis Puerta Agreed! I was just saying this, Mangini reminds me of a machine, trying to mimic Portnoy's skill. Sounds like it, too. Don't get me wrong, the man is skilled, and has his own style. But this song, it's MADE for Portnoy!
+Luis Puerta Now I see why Portnoy left. Stale, boring music. Don't get me wrong, but these guys are too good. Too musical.
It will always sound like a machine when another drummer joins a band that didn't write the music...Dont get me wrong, the way port not plays is so good, especially for this band and such a bummer when he left and got replaced by someone who is like polar opposite
Triple O.G. Da Truth polar opposite......not really mate . Mangini is actually more skilled, but it's not the skill that makes a drummer better, it's his passion/musicality which is why I'll always consider Portnoy the best, you'll get impressed by hearing mangini nail the notes, true but I'll never dance to that but i'll definitely dance to Portnoy playing
It’s a passion. Portnoy has passion beyond most drummers but that doesn’t mean other drummers lack it. Portnoy is a beast! A living freak of nature when it comes to drumming.
Portnoy and Jordison are my fave...
Matt average sorum tried to diss portnoy😂 sorum is toss.
@@bigmoney4685It's not at all unusual for musicians to project like this. It happens in the guitar realm all of the time. Someone is made to feel inadequate by another musician and their ego can't allow them to accept that their work ethic is not as good or they simply lack natural ability so they'll claim another guitarist has no "heart" or has no "feel" and is only "showing off" or some such nonsense. It's true with some, no doubt, but not with all and especially some of the admired giants out there.
"I put more into one note than they do into 1000." It's like, "Yeah, that's because that one note was more work for you than the 1000 for them. 😅
Not a big fan of DT's music, but I can watch Portnoy play all day long. He has so much joy and passion when he plays, and a relaxed confidence -- making it look effortless. The music is very complex and difficult to play, but he looks like he's just having an animated conversation with some friends :)

*swings 3ft long hair*
Dude 🤣🤣🤣🤣
11:05-12:20 this ending is the most beautiful endings to a musical journey I have ever heard
hell's kitchen ending always make me sad. i don't know why but the music is just deep in my soul :(
because the label ruined the album and Portnoy almost quit the band over it. Took them off the label. Thankfully, the demo version is on spotta if you want to listen to what Falling Into Infinity should've sounded like@@wisnubramantyo
words are silver but silence are gold. Well done James! memorable live
Dear Felipe, Thank you for sublime audio quality. And to talk about DT and their impact on music is just a waste of words. As I never could gather enough to describe their musical mastery.
10:23 I like how they're like "... anyway... Dance of Eternity..."
Hahaha! This is the best description of that particular segue.
11:03
the moment when every hair raises and your body twists from chills.
3:06
Those beats give me orgasms. 6:34- The song which introduced Dream Theater to the world.
Hah! yea. thought I was just the one who supposed to feel like that. damn this band so freakin awesome! \m/
They're beyond the hyper awesome level.
Which song is it?
Mike is basically Neil Peart with stick tricks and nasty double bass...always will be a favorite to watch! Saw Mike play with A7X live and he was kickass!
Stupendous performance here! DT we're absolutely locked-in. Always enjoyable to watch them with Portnoy, he always brought an extra level of energy with lots of stage presence and panache!
That recovery at 3:07
Man Portnoy is a beast
The one where you see the stick falling to the right and he grabs another one?
I missed that one scene you are so detail
They added the snare part. Totally off
@@josephlamadrid1799 he hits the snare with his right when he realises he cant catch the stick
I was front row at a Neil Morse Band show where he did that whilst we happened to be looking right at each other. He even found time to crack a grin whilst grabbing another stick and not missing a beat. I just laughed.
what a wonderful display or musicianship and talent from the whole group
I come back to the multicam version of this at least once a year. This is an absolute experience. Everybody is just so… omg. Chefs kiss
This is the epitome of art.
Words can't describe my immense admiration for this man
Every single one of them is such a master of their instrument, it's unbelievable. They play the craziest shit known to the metal/rock community with such ease!
beethoven would have been amazed !
Portnoy is the king of DT. I really miss him. The soul and heart is somehow gone.
Peo Fröding it’s amazing what the rhythm section brings to a band. Van Halen wouldn’t be the same without AVH’s unique sound on drums
I honestly think Mangini is the closest drummer to Portnoy. I also think portnoy was god but Mangini filled his shoes quite well.
Vic ok probingnya
This has been the circumstance for the last 10 yrs. move on and accept that Mangini has filled in the spot well. He deserves to be recognized as The drummer of DT.
@@joeviloria2494 i agree with you. Mangini is very skilled and professional. But Portnoy has more soul in his performance. And that reflects on the whole band.
Literally crying , it;s so beautiful !
The musicianship in DT is astounding.
7 years later and i'm still not over it!! Portnoy IS Dream Theater
Eu sendo um iniciante da música não consigo imaginar como o ser humano consegue chegar a esse nível de musicalidade...
Só tem monstro nessa banda....
E muita coisa para lembrar....
Kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk
Every time i spend hours watching DT videos i always close with this one…Portnoy was-is and will always be Dream Theater
it's amazing how his drumming compliments the whole thing not only rhytmically but at times also melodically ! that is an insane level of mastery for percussion.
Que capos definitivamente cada uno llego a un nivel de músico realmente increíble, más aún en conjuntos, maestrasos!
The thing that makes Portnoy so difficult and so amazing to watch is the time signatures are so different and he’s playing them like it ain’t nothing. He’s a god inside a human body.
Always loved those guys. Whole catalogue is great. South of heaven, seasons in the abyss, divine intervention, and so much more great stuff. Rip jeff
Holly Molly this is one of the best music I ever heard ... fantastic
Mike Portnoy is a superb drummer! - Keep Rockin Mike! - Sincerely, Rob.
Look how fluid these guys are together, roll on the LTE reunion.
4g reunion
so much passion, feeling, technique ... incomparable
2nd time in 24 hours watching this! I just can't get enough of it.
i can't believe everything i just saw in this video! In all my years surrounded by musicians - why have i never known of these guys :)
maria lc : then you wasn’t surrounded by real musicians 🤭... this guy is a legend, best drummer in the modern era of metal and rock 😊.
HE is back !
What a treat. Thank you 😊
this is my favorite band, I am amazed by the players. greetings from Indonesia 🇮🇩
Welcome Back MP! we miss you master!
Esto era el verdadero Dream Theater. Mike Portnoy y su Groove impresionante. Tecnica y composiciones con feeling increibles. Mike por siempre.
Mike Portnoy and Nicko McBrain are 2 drummers who always look like there having so much fun when they're playing. They're just grinning their ass off the whole time.
Divine!!! Portnoy makes the difference !!! Miss that D.T.
Thanx for sharing!!
the transition between Ytse jam and the dance of eternity owns everything.
Its crazy that the top and best prog bands are all lead by the drummers, and the drummers remain the most famous of these bands. Seriously, between Peart and Portnoy, these bands would have never flourished without them.
Drummers are rock and roll. Everyone else is along for the ride.
Mr. Mike Portnoy
So incredible!!!
Great video!!!
i love it...........amazing....... thanks for post 👍
Greatings from Italy
Perfect musicianship...Unreal!
damn dude, DT back in these years were just perfect! Still wondering how the fk can they made this song, what kind of mind they have to build it. Budokan is perfect gig in every way you want it. Glad Mike has returned to DT and I think their best years are yet to come :)
언제 봐도 참 좋네요~ㅎㅎ
THE KING IS BACK
Watched Maginni version, thought this is a damn technically difficult piece.
Watched Portnoy, never thought this is such a lively & creative piece!
where is the Magini version of this?
If there was a list of the top 5 drummers of all time, Portnoy would be on it. His mastery of time signature changes alone is incredible
Yes and the other four most have probably never heard of
Been heard of
Playing live like this.. God level.. 🐐🔥
Welcome back MP!!!
11:40 i love how everyone turn their direction to Mike, waiting him to lead the ending hit
The king is back!!!! 👑
I just had tears in my eyes
when I heard and saw Portnoy singing using his stick and drum
Portnoy is the heart of DT
Mangini is the DT Drummer now
no need to argue, they're both great !!!
MP easy to understand when playing drum and his progressive skill bring DT never bored to hear. Legend of progressive rock.
11:03 is really touched my heart. As if Mike Portnoy would be leaving Dream Theater at the moment. Like Mike Portnoy will say goodbye to Fans :'(
Omg they make the song harder than it was. 😱 Thanks, DT.
Way beyond awesome , never ever gets old , EVER!
And he's officially back behind his kit!! Cant wait to see this!!!
They are all pawns in myungs game!
myung is real DT founder and leader, he would always kick them with his marshal arts if they refuse to practice
Gotta say, Portnoy's pulling out of another stick was one of the most amusing things I've seen in a long time
He leaves me speechless everytime.....awesome.
This is simply amazing
There is not about technique and skill
Their play with their SOUL
8:05 - 8:35 is supposed to be one of the most difficult drumming parts to play ever written in any composition.. Even Mangini has struggled to get it all right in his concerts. Portnoy is a killer - look how he plays it flawlessly. Absolute stunner. No equal!
It's not that hard. It isn't easy but it's mostly just one pattern and doesn't take much energy. Tony Royster Jr. is a much better drummer and could play that in his sleep.
couldn't find "tony royster jr dance of eternity sleeping" ¿can you give me
the link? thanks men
Do you have anything pertinent to reality to say?
@@flacidhouse350 "better" is subjective. For me, Mike mauls Tony Rooster Jr.
@@ashutoshgoit9540 Not really. what makes one drummer better than another is mostly objective. Subjectivity only comes in when two drummers play two different styles. They play the same style. Royster has a little more reach. He's better.
I had a blast. Thanks!
I've been sitting here watching Portnoy, trying to think of something to say.... I'm just speechless... The man is a machine... He is absolutely the best...
WELCOME BACK, MIKE PORTNOY. Now the world is a bit more in place and it feels right!
Can not belive!!!!
why do i feel like dream theater coud make some castlevania tracks
Emezing dream theater Progressive rock 🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘
Absolutely brilliant musicians on top form 👍
who's came here in 2020 ?
PS : 11:03 the ending of the music (hell's kitchen) is always make me sad.. i don't know why. it feels just deep.
Almost at the end of 2020, I still love this! DT without Portnoy is not DT.

Me encanta la forma en que disfrutaba la música cuando estaba en DREAM THEATHER, su forma de tocar era muy natural y fluída, muy difícil de imitar, actualmente uno de los grandes bateristas del mundo.
I´m so happy he is back🖤🖤🖤😎
My head explodes EVERY time i go back and see this. EPIC!!
Energía, memoria, ponche, feeling, pasión, Dream Theater es la cima. Hoy siguen siendo bárbaros, pero Mike Portnoy con su salida le quitó el 50% del alma a la banda.
this right here... is EXACTLY why he can not be replaced by any drummer (not even Mangini which has got to be in the top 2 best drummers in the world nowadays), Portnoy was the heart and soul of the band the same way JP is, and JR, JM, except for James which is the weaker link of them all haha but still i can't imagine the band with someone else on the vocals... it's a freaking shame i never got the chance to see the whole crew together...
Too bad nobody seems to have heard of Travis Orbin. The guy is twice as young and arguably the best upcoming talent in the world of drumming. Check out his vids and tell me he wont be able to play this. Props to portnoy for doing this, but discovering Travis Orbin convinced me there is a better drummer alive.
I agree, even back in the day I always thought what MADE Dream Theater was the colaboration of Portnoy, Petruci and Myung. Those three guys formed the central core of DT, you take one of them out and you don't have the same band...and I was right, I honestly hate the last album
i think that james is great but the singer of pain of salvation is the perfect guy for them... and as you say, no one can replace MP cause his a fucking tool!!!!!!
Mangini's got the skills, even more so than portnoy. What he doesn't have is the writing sense.
I find it really inaccurate to tell who's better than whom or who's the most skilled drummer as that would be quite subjective, but most of us agree that MP was a fundamental piece both in the song writing process and as we can se here in the performing of those songs... TO ME the band won't ever be as good as back in the day... they've lost an irreplaceable part... i'll still go to their concerts but to hear them play their old songs live... I'm still hoping for a reunion. (hopefully before they're too old)...
This drummer is amazing ì am blown away. This guy is the real deal
its like youre playing a game and sounds changes every level. This is why i like DT
...yeahh. I play in a 4/4, 3/4, and sometimes get creative with 111/43/@--$/🥨/€4/¿😎... you know, nothing too complex.
Seeing these guys in about 2004 at the Rave in MKE was awesome. Eternal fan..
wow such skill much drums many stick
Welcome back Mike!!!
AMAZING!
This band is too sophisticated and smart for me. I cant get over how they all are masters of their instruments. Its incredible the difficulty and precision these guys have.
Não quero nem saber...Portnoy é o melhor de todos...ele não é uma máquina, ele é um super herói para bateristas como eu.
Esta a frente do seu tempo.
Portnoy the Best!!!!!!!!!!!
For me these are holy musicians...MP best drummer for me for the last 30 years, he's such a grandmaster of drumming...also the "rest of the Band" are soooo great...i'm in heaven! ❤✌⛑🕉🔥😍
When I first saw this years.. and years ago...lo and behold, it never left my insight.
