      My gripe with this video is that is not a fair comparison in any way. The Sony is double the price. What I love most about my M50 is the adaptability to all my L glass.

    • @cooloox
      @cooloox 5 років тому +17

      @@IsmaelMartinezPR Also, the exposures weren't always the same. For example, you might notice a nice rich blue sky on the Sony next to a weaker blue sky on the Canon, but this was just a distraction from the fact the face (the main subject!) was correctly exposed on the Canon and very underexposed on the Sony. I prefer my subject exposed correctly, personally.
      As for custom profiles, why was one not used on the M50? Free profiles are readily available for Canon, I downloaded over 200 of them, including Fuji Astia and other Fuji film simulations.

    Thanks for the review. Well done and I genuinely appreciate it. I own the Canon M50 and absolutely love it. I would say I still love it's dual pixel auto focus over Sony's, however, it's undeniable that the A6400 edges out the M50 in a couple categories. But, in fairness, there is still about a 400 dollar difference in price between these two, not really an apples to apples comparison. I think that when considering the huge price difference, an argument could be made for either of these two taking home the bang for buck award. Thanks again for the review.

      @@JetBen555 the M50 was badly let down by the lens used on it for this demonstration, which is not generally reckoned to be particularly sharp. spent a lot of time deciding between the M50 and Sony 6400, ultimately opted for the Canon. They both have their peaks and valleys and in the end, I would say they are both great. 4K was pushing me towards the Sony but the lens options, cost and software bugs got me to choose the M50. Neither was a bad choice but in the end, it was based on confidence. if both bodies were 100% equal I suspect everyone would opt for the Canon.

If you go to amazon or smallrig.com and type in 2310 cage you’ll see it. The photos it takes are cleaner, it shoots 4K, higher 1080 frame rate, and 11fps stills. I would definitely say it’s much better then the 80D. The only down side is battery life. I hope this helped! Definitely pick up the sigma 16mm 1.4 and the sigma 30mm 1.4. One thing you didn’t cover is stabilization... what did you think of the Canon’s Digital Image stabilization? It has a crop and I’m curious if you find it valuable for vlogging vs. not having it. Both cameras offer optical lens stabilization but it doesn’t seem to be enough to make either great for vlogging on its own. Does optical stabilization work better for either camera? To me the Sony would be a no-brainer for vlogging if it wasn’t so damn shaky.

    👍 Thanks! This video helped me to avoid buyers remorse. The M50 is $550 with a kit lens; The A6400 is $1,000 with a kit lens and it comes with lots of accessories. I bought the Sony. The 6400 has better color, is much more versatile and does a great job with 4K. My gaming PC can handle editing 4K; I'm a student, so, Adobe CC is dirt cheap for me... With a gimbal, a kit lens, and an ultra wide-angle lens, I can recoup my investment by shooting upscale real estate pics and video: Large commissions = large marketing budgets. If I tried to use the Canon for the same purpose, the only realtors that would hire me, wouldn't pay much, because they'd be marketing first-time homebuyer houses.

I did a lot of research and i think the A6400 is currently the best camera for content creators.The M50 and A6400 are both quite easy to use. One downside of the sony camera is, that sony lenses in general are a lot more expensive, but there are also good budget options from sony or sigma. Great comparison. You showed that the A6400 is a great camera and the M50 is also a great camera for its price. I bought an M50 for street photography and it's surprisingly good for the price. I customised my buttons such that manual mode is a dream to use now and nearly every common setting has fast access.
    I'd love to play with the A6400 to test its AF.
    Going back to the M50, you really have to know it to get the most out of it. You need to know where AF tracking mode will excel and when to switch to zone AF or single-point AF or even small AF single-point too. Get to know these and you'll rarely ever misfocus a shot.

    0:22 -- "To the other APS-C king, the M50" said no one who cares about their reputation in the industry. Fuji XT-20/30 and Sony-A6*** are the APS-C kings hands down. Everyone else is playing catch up or unsure if it's worth staying/entering the market.
    I appreciate the honesty in the review overall though and it was solid. I think in future reviews should be more pragmatic in a few ways. First, stop talking about rolling shutter as a comparison or test. All mirrorless cameras are bad at it. Until a camera does something substantially different (faster) while reading out the pixel data from the sensor, it'll be a reality. I'd just say "it's there, this camera is no better or worse than others out there so if you were expecting this to solve it, you'll be disappointed". Rolling shutter is also something most people don't notice unless they know what to look for while the camera is panning like a maniac. Most natural/real footage won't ever pan that fast while having the noticeable edges too.
    Second, a major element and feature of portrait photography is eye auto focus. Conveniently, (I hear) it is one of the substantially sub-par features in the M50 where it basically never finds the eye outside of close up and wide open eyes. Older Sony A6*** and Fuji XT cameras are great finding the eye even when the subject is at a distance. The A6400 improves on what was already great and gives you A7III/A9 like accuracy and speed for acquiring eyes and putting it in a $900 camera body, and adds behavior which knows how to gracefully fall back from eye, to face, to object tracking so you don't have to do much at all and have correct focus for continuous photo shooting.
    Color science I've realized is kind of a BS topic for comparison. For photography basic raw processing can/should be adjusting colors anyways. Video is tougher to correct colors, but if your standard workflow has to using a log color format with color grading later, then the colors out of camera doesn't really matter. Super casual videographers would care that colors out of camera with no work may look better to some folks, but if you're sensitive enough notice the difference between two solid colors, you should
    I realize this review focused entirely on the video capabilities of both cameras, so it would be fair to point out that both cameras are actually hybrid cameras which are supposed to be fairly solid in both video and photo capabilities. If you're going to cut it out, make mention of that. The M50 seems to be a better camera if you're on a tighter budget (or looking for better value) if you're sticking to 1080p vlogging (better setup with front facing flip screen not getting blocked by hot shoe mics). Outside of that, A6*** series tend to beats it in almost every other relevant way possible. Another area might be lens lineup if you already have and investment in Canon lenses, but if that's you, then you've been doing video or photography long enough to not need this kind of review to make a decision.

    EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ] A6400 is much more better camera than A6300 & A6500 because:
    1. No 30 minutes record limit: A6300 &A6500 will not get this update do the old tax issue,
    2. No overheat (better image processor) like A6300/A6500,
    3. Longer battery life 1 hour 30 minutes,
    4. Image process from A9 = amazing fast AF better than A6300/A6500,
    5. TIME LAPSE build in,
    6. Full Flip Screen,
    7. A6500 has got IBIS but in video in motion is very bad - you need gimbal and without it you get better price for A6400 $899 (A6400 + gimbal = a bit more than A6500 price),
    8. New Hight Dynamic Range picture profile,
    9. 2 New AF engines that are only in A6400 - old cameras don't have this (you need this new image processor),
    10. Better build in microphone at the front - it offer very nice audio if you are not in wind area,
    11. Support for higher iSO,
    12. During recording screen doesn't dim.
    Summarizing: A6400 is better than A6300/A6500 in everthing 😊

    I tried my best to watch this review unbiased (i recently bought the A6400), but to be honest the video quality throughout the entire test and all the modes was clearly superior on the A6400. Which makes sense, given that its new and its over 300 dollars more expensive than the M50. The high iso performance looked awesome, and overall 4K shots were stunning. Autofocus is a beast, i can confirm that.

    I have an M50 as my backup cam and it´s great for the price. I paid 480 Euros where the Sony is 880 at Amazon (both excl. VAT). So you still compare two cameras that are not that close in terms of price. And of course an almost double priced camera should (and has) better features. On the other hand the Speedbooster at the M50 opens up a whole new world because I have a lot of EF glass (Don´t know if that´s available for the Sony as well). To cut a long story short: The Sony has the better specs but the Canon is almost half the price and does also a great job. Depends on what you need and willing to pay.

    I like the A6400, it creates stunning images. However, the M50 is well under $1000, about $400 less expensive , is not a similar comparison. Perhaps, price wise, the A6400 is more closely compared to a GH5 or the M50 w/a speed booster? That would be a very interesting video.
    And because the flip screen on the A6400 is blocked by adding a Mic, it needs a cage. Which may not be a big deal, just noteworthy.

    No doubt the A6400 is way better than the M50 and well worth the extra money.
    The M50 was already obsolete when it came out in 2018, it was originally priced at 900$, same as the A6300 (a 2015 camera with better spec) but they had to cut the price (almost immediately) by about 35-40% to stay competitive. Not only that, but the lens selection for
    EF-M is terrible.

    • @filip1491
      @filip1491 5 років тому +4

      The EF-M selection of lenses is indeed a bad bank for the buck, but you could just buy an adapter and get access to all the EF-S lenses, in which case, you get access to lenses that are cheaper than the ones for Sony and feature reliable and silent STM motors. Besides, I think people that buy Canon are just different. We value reliability, longevity, colors that are spot on out of camera, a very forgiving codec and most of all - the user interface on Canon cameras is just better. There is a reason, why so many photographers choose Canon and that is the ease of use. So yeah, although the Sony is technically the better camera, I would still go with Canon.

    Nice video! A lot of information there. The general purpose usable 4k/120fps and better high ISO noise performance would be good reasons for some people to go the Sony route. The M50 might have had a slightly better time in autofocus with an EF-M lens, but the adapter does tend to work pretty well (the only lens I've tried on mine so far is a EF 135mm f2.8 SF. So far it stopped focusing once, but cycling the power corrected that). On a side note, when I was testing out the 11-22mm vs the 22mm f2 lens I did notice that the M50 focuses a lot more consistently in 4k mode with the zoom lens rather than the 22mm f2.

    When recommending cameras, I always take into account lens prices depending on what someone likes to take photos/videos of. So if someone wants to get a wide angle in the future, but one brand sells it for 200-300 and the other for 500+$, it makes a huge difference for a lot of people. If they just plan to stick to the kit lens, then comparing cameras alone makes sense.

  • @jerryhasnolife9156
    @jerryhasnolife9156 5 років тому

    Spicy comments, but I like the comparison. A lot of people seem to be caught up on the initial price of the cameras which has merit. The actual cost however adding all the gear used in this video however? It’s actually really similar. If I got to BH the M50 body has been stuck at $630 USD for months, the speed booster is $160 (2 month back order), and $450 for the Ef-s STM 18-135 (STM is a must for video). So in total if I was buying everything brand new at retail $1240~. The Sony a6400 w/ that 18-135 (both have same 3.5-5.6) is $1298.
    So for the US atm, the difference in total price of the kits being used is about $60. While it’s definitely easier to piece a kit together over time, and that does have a lot of merit to it (it’s what I do); the total price of this comparison is 100% fair imo if you’re basing it off each ones “sweet spot” for video at regular retail pricing.

    I have an m50 and the lowlight is just not for me. Anything in photos above 200 iso has noticeable grain. The video is decent though, just want 120 FPS in 1080p, so the a6400 would be my choice as an m50 owner.

      @cooloox 5 років тому +7

      You need to learn to expose properly. ISO 200 is BS. I get relatively clean images at ISO 800, still relatively clean at ISO 1600, grain noticeable but not bad at ISO 3200 then a big jump to ISO 6400, but still usable. Too noisy at ISO 12800 except in rare circumstances.
      Here are 2 images, one at ISO 800 and one at ISO 3200 proving noise is not only usable up to ISO 200. Images are 100% crops to keep file size down:

      One thing beginners probably don't know is what resolution they need to print images at common sizes, such as 12" x 8". That particular sized print at photo quality (300ppi) would need 3600px x 2400px. If you have a little grain in the original image, it will mostly vanish if you downsample your image to those dimensions and there will be no grain at all in the print. If you pixel peep then noise is visible at ISO 3200 on the most expensive DSLRs and mirrorless cameras. Don't expect too much from a camera, especially a cheap one!

      cooloox I simply said the lowlight is not for me. I do notice grain at 200 iso, I never said it was the end of the world, but it’s just a fact that some cameras are going to perform better in lowlight and the a6400 is one of those cameras. Also, the m50 is aimed at beginners. Not saying I’m a complete beginner, but you can always harp someone for “not knowing there camera enough”, while other tools will help them accomplish there goals easier. Why jump through hoops when you know which one is better for you and your workflow. Plus lack of 120 frames is honestly a deal breaker, and the native lenses for the m50 are just not what I’m looking for. I respect your opinion, and thanks for the info on pixel peeping and exposure. I’m just a hobbyist and the m50 just isn’t for me. I’m glad you’re enjoying it though! I’ve definitely taken some good images on it.

    The automatic focalizing system is very important when you create a vlog or shout the designated target. And we can see it, the sony it's better.

      @@intheworldofmari Thank you 😀 another reason is i can't afford buying Sony lenses, they're quite expensive for me.

      Hi Pak!
      As I'm also considering to buy M50, currently having Slr 60D. May I ask you what kind of adapter does a man need in order to reuse the lenses? I will make a research on that!

      @@bozhidarabozhilova5067 you can use original Canon EF to EFM adapter but it's rather expensive. For cheaper adapter there are Viltrox or Meike, i currently using Viltrox EF to EFM adapter for my new Canon EOS M6 Mark II and it works well with my old Canon EF lenses.

    The A6400 is better but it is also $400 more. With those $400 you can buy a speed booster and some other accessories for the Cannon to make it more competitive.
