I agree with what you say about Canon at the end of this video. If they can put this stuff into a 6D MK3 with dual slots and a headphone jack - I'd buy one in a heartbeat and I'm a Nikon shooter. Please Canon hurry up I really don't want to buy a A73.
I needed to mention that of the several reviews I’ve seen on this camera, yours has to be the best. It’s “cut to the chase”, very informative; short and sweet. Thank you very much! Also, you mentioned a couple features others never mention (compressed raw, the audio quality aspect, the far focus jump thingy - I’m still experimenting with this lol- etc..) excellent review!!! - and btw, I hate to bother commenting unless I’m very impressed with someone’s work and have to give kudos.
@landeus has explained everything that it's in my heart right now. I found this video just currently in Nov. 2019 and I was usually a silent reader and never put on any comment on any channel. Ordered it after your recommendation two days ago and I've been playing with it for a few hours. The 4K autofocus issue is a shame, but it's still better than my G7X Mark II, at least in my limited use of it thusfar. Still usable for vlogging with the 11-22mm IMO. It's such a hard sell when you read the specs and even when seeing some videos on it, but I really, really like this. The stabilization is ridiculously better on this than it was on my 70d when I had that. It also fits nicely on my $15 rubber flexible tripod thing that weighs considerably less than the GorillaPod that's currently being used to hang my deadlift suit to dry. Found out about the unfortunate audio plug situation, but once the screen is flipped, you can go back and forth without needing to flip it at that awkward 90 degree angle again until you're totally done. (maybe a screen protecter would come in handy here?) The 120fps is a huge pain in the butt to get to, but it's honestly pretty decent if you're just watching it on your phone. B-roll stuff maybe? (in really good light, lol) Got the M50 body, 18-150 lens, (tbh you really could just use this to vlog imo. the whole package is physically smaller than the 70d I had that I get the same field of view that I did with the 70d/10-18 combo set at 15 or 16mm), 11-22mm lens, and an extra battery for almost $500 less than the A7III body alone. Saved me a ton of cash there, so thank you again. Going to shoot a video with it tomorrow for kicks comparing the S9+ and G7X Mark II as vlogging cameras since I'm now over the initial shock of what I look and sound like. B-roll in DC might be nice if it ever stops raining. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Solid recommendation, and please continue with The Office references, they definitely don't go unappreciated.
Wow awesome comment Omar! Thank you for taking the time to post it! That’s so awesome that you love the camera! I love mine and just sold my 80D for it myself! It’s the best camera for youtubers in 2018 in my opinion!
Once there is no switch from Af to M, i wonder is it possible to switch from AF to manual focus during the video? Now let me tell you that it is very strange to do a review of a M50 without knowing it and not knowing that the M lenses of the canon do not have button from Af to M.
Right so i want to use this camera to record a piano show next month, i realise recording pianos properly would require quite a lot of mics etc, but i just wanted to know if there is a mic for this canon you can recommend that would be up to the job of recording audio that will have quite a bit of echo/reverb to it? One that i can simply attach to the camera?
My real estate set up is a Canon M50 w/ the Laowa 9mm f2.8 ef-m mount lens. Which equates to a 13.5mm full frame. Is there a Viltrox speed booster or anything that will allow me to get better/wider 4k and allow more light in? I run into some houses with very poor natural light.
that B and H Photo deal makes this extremely hard to pass up. At that price I'm fine with sacrificing auto focus 4k and I'll just live with manually focusing in that mode.
Totally! We found a speed booster for the M50 as well that we will review when we get it! That takes the 4K crop to super35 mode! Pair a sigma 18-35 with it and you have major success right there!

The only thing that this camera has me on the fence is the fact the screen doesn’t have the volume levels.... BUT the weight, size and focus peaking is awesome. I’m either going to get this M50 or the 80d
Good points that I haven't seen in any other review. Maybe you can answer a question I have about this camera: when shooting 1080P, does it allow you to control the rate of focus when using DPAF? I think it's called "Movie Servo AF Tracking Sensitivity" in the 80D's menu.
I got this last week as well for my girlfriend. With the creator kit. The price I could not pass up as well. I saw photos and it looks amazing but I hope it goes well my with L series lens and my cine primes. Hopefully 🙌🏼
It works great with the EF adapter! I found an EF-M to EF speed booster that we will do some tests on and that is a game changer. Makes it a full frame canon!
@Deepanshu Gupta dont know how professional you need. But Its a large MP sensor. I took some photographs and enlarged it on a 20x30 print for a client and it came out great. As long as you keep the ISO low. Like most entry level cameras you'll be fine. Pair it with nice glass and your good to go. Then again, I was using the ef speedbooster and the canon ef 85mm 1.8 lens. Check out the photography reviews from disney images channel.
@Deepanshu Gupta that's basically what the 80D. Good video recorder. What do you plan on using it for? I can say.....I miss the dials. But you can customize all the buttons. There is multi fn button. Wheel on the shutter button. And the mode dial. The d pad. And the 2 buttons on the top right on the back. * and whatever thay other icon is. I have my top dpad to toggle between aperture and shutter speed. Left d pad for iso. Or you can use the mult fn button for that. Right d pad for AF modes. And bottom d pad for changing my white balance and Kelvin. I've gotten use to the button combos so no biggie. Yes its smaller, and more button combos to navigate. Just depends on what you need. I picked it for the better processor, better dual pixal, mirrorless, focus peeking, adjusting Kelvin, smaller body, and has good 1080p, and you can adapt the speedbooster-which helps with a stop of light, and reduce that crop image a bit.
@Deepanshu Gupta its perfect in most light conditions. For photography. It struggles in low light. Around 800-1600 iso. If you can navigate around that, you should be fine. I use flash and umbrella even in daylight under shade to really get that full of light effect. Check out yongnuo for flashes and lenses. They have some decent items! If you can handle some noise in your images at higher iso you'll love the m50. I was using the newer 77d and I replaced it with my m50. I felt the same. Loved the bulkiness, felt better. And the buttons. But I NEVER WANTED to lug it around. With the m50, due to its form factor. It's super compact, I even think of ways to bring it with me in case I want to use it. If youre really intrested in buying one..... email me @tx.media.creation@gmail.com . I personally own 3, a 77d. And the new EOS R. Maybe I can sell you mine, just bought it. And I can hook you up with a good bundle. Kit lens, ef mount + ef lens and spare batteries? But then had the impulse to fork over for the new EOS R last week. So now I dont need it. Lol I use them for video work. Weddings and parties. They are great "cheap"(600ish), small, b cameras!
@Deepanshu Gupta no problem! If you decide to get a speedbooster or viltrox EF adapter. Dont even bother with the M mount kit lens and save your money. Just get the m50 body and spend the extra you would to bundle the kit lense. For an m2 adapter($40) and a cheap yongnuo 50mm 1.8 ($40-70 usd,) mark ii if you can! I've used them and own them all- YNUO 50mm f1.8 mi, 50mm f1.8 mii, then more expensive canon 50mm f1.8 STM, and even the more expensive 50mm f1.4 USM lens. For starting off I can really recommend it. Look anywhere on any platform about photography and video. The Nifty 50 is a go to inexpensive lens to start with!
A lot of nice bits of information here. One nice thing about that mic port compared to the SL2 that I use is that it is higher up on the M50, so it looks like less of the screen is blocked when doing selfie stuff. They did a solid job with the little things here outside of the intentionally limited 4K.
hey shopping for my first non-cell phone camera and am leaning toward the m50. Your two videos have helped me a lot. But there's one question I have that I have never been able to get the answer for, even from the M50 user guide. You mention that the camera has clean HDMI out to enable live streaming. That's something I want to do. My question is this, does the HDMI stream include audio? Or is it video only? Also can you confirm that it has a headphone monitor jack? If so, I figure I can get the sound off the camera that way if I need to. I look forward to seeing more m50 videos. Maybe an m50 video specifically about live streaming?
Summary: 1. 4K Video - 120 Mbit/sec good, 2.4x crop bad 2. Digic 8 new 3. 120 fps, but only at 720p 4. DPAF - face and eye -tracking good. 4K contrast detection bad, no DPAF 5. Focus peaking - manual focus great 6. Size and weight - 0.85 lbs 7. Price tag - low 8. Mic input - clean preamps 9. Clean HDMI out 10. Wifi & Bt - good 11. New RAW format, compressed RAW
Yes. The 1080p is better. Better low light. You get digital IS and 120fps. Better AF with eye detection. And the possibility of a speed booster making it full frame equivalent
Hey! Clean HDMI out?!? Were you able to get auto focus to work while streaming a clean signal? Is there a setting that I don’t know about? I always get the white focus box unless I’m in manual focus. Please help. Thanks for the video. Subbed!
Ya it's a clean out!....but with some limitations like you say. In order to have a totally clean hdmi out....switch your camera to manual focus and the box will go away!
Thanks so much. Been looking in to a Pro camera something to learn the features on. It’s a shame that they’re holding back and not putting out the best product they can buy disabling the auto focus
this is such an "ePIC" review, keep it up! LOL :P would you say a 15m-45mm lens is a good size? what is the brand of your glasses and hat you're wearing? let me know
YES YES YES, I check its samples on DPReview and they looked amazing. I didn't believe in Canon's mirrorless but I just bought one right after this video.
hello! im unsure if I should buy the m5 or the m50, i like to travel and take pictures and little video, what would you recommend me?, the m5 would be like 40 dls cheaper, thanks!
Hey man, thanks for the info.. I just bought the Canon M50 with the lens kit and I was looking to buy a second lens for my portfolio. Would you recommend the 22mm or the nifty fifty? I'll be shooting: sporting events, outdoor adventures, food adventures, family gatherings. Things like that.
For sports you really want a fast lens, the nifty fifty is a great choice at a good price, just remember you need the ef-s adapter for that. For family gatherings the kit lens and it's 15mm (24mm when you add in the crop factor) will do the trick.
I'm definitely glad I waited after the initial drop of this camera because it's already dropped in price. I'm still going to get it. Again, like everyone says, the lack of dual pixel AF in 4K and the 2.4x crop is such a downside, but I look at it as a challenge to get the best picture possible with its particular setup. And as a guy who travels way too often, a DSLR can be cumbersome and add too much weight when you fly on those low cost airlines that only allow you 15 pounds of weight in your bag! LOL Either way. I know that Canon will do the right thing and do an upgrade to the m50 in the very near future, but until then, I think I'll be happy with the m50.
I totally agree. Overall, this camera really is quite amazing. We’ve been using it a lot and it has done an amazing job for us. For both home video of my baby boy, and vlogging to even shooting an episode of Kinotika
Hey there - trying to make some videos for instagram stories. Whenever I record in portrait it saves it as landscape? Is there a setting on the camera to film in portrait? Trying to avoid editing everything in a program. Many Thanks.
it is mentioned that the 4k does not have dual focus. does the 1080p have dual focus? may I know what is the role of a dual focus as compared to a non dual focus?
I was under the impression that the m50 ONLY has clean hdmi out when autofocus is disabled. Can you have clean hdmi out with autofocus ENABLED? (Most say the autofocus white box is still there when enabled)
I own the sony a7s mark 1 for my gf's cooking youtube channel and it works great for me. But I want to pick up a second camera for vlogging and travel. Would you recommend the m50? Is the 1080p (sharpness) as good or almost as good as the a7s? I'm sure the colors will be much better. I really like that the m50 is cheap with good AF. Oh, and I don't need 4k! Thanks!
great video! Also an interesting bargain. I was a long time Canon user, but felt betrayed by them. So switched to nikon for my photographer and just got an A7Riii for my video and photo work.
+Kinotika.........I'm more interested in using it with an atomos exeternal recorder like the ninja star for prores 1080p 422 hq files, but I'm guessing there is no trigger record
Is it possible on the M50 to change the autofocus in 4 k so it works. You said the manufacturer disabled it to preserve prices of their higher end range, is there a tweek that can change this??
I wish some hacker would just modify or write new firmware where the dual pixel autofocus works on 4k

@Deepanshu Gupta email me and I can show you the images I've gotten so far and the video. If you want to see what its capable of.
If someone makes an update to have duel pixle in 4K I'll pay good money for that.
A lot of nice bits of information here. One nice thing about that mic port compared to the SL2 that I use is that it is higher up on the M50, so it looks like less of the screen is blocked when doing selfie stuff. They did a solid job with the little things here outside of the intentionally limited 4K.
Ya! If you forget about 4K and only use it in certain circumstances (locked off on a tripod with manual focus) then it’s a solid little camera
best reviews for the M50 to excite the buyer that ive seen.
Plz do video about m50 video recording with different frames and resolution...how to set120p ?
hey shopping for my first non-cell phone camera and am leaning toward the m50.
Summary:
1. 4K Video - 120 Mbit/sec good, 2.4x crop bad
2. Digic 8 new
3. 120 fps, but only at 720p
4. DPAF - face and eye -tracking good. 4K contrast detection bad, no DPAF
5. Focus peaking - manual focus great
6. Size and weight - 0.85 lbs
7. Price tag - low
8. Mic input - clean preamps
9. Clean HDMI out
10. Wifi & Bt - good
11. New RAW format, compressed RAW
So would you purchase the M50 instead of the 80D, if there was no need for 4K Video.
Yes. The 1080p is better. Better low light. You get digital IS and 120fps. Better AF with eye detection. And the possibility of a speed booster making it full frame equivalent
thanks
What camera do you recommend for vloggers? Just starting out here and not sure what to get?
the "that's what she said" part KILLED ME 😂😂
Does the M50 have any sort of manual gain control for the microphones? I find this really useful on my 650D and would be a deal breaker without it.
So if you can hack the camera, you can switch on the feature canon has disabled?
Thanks for the video. What's the reference of the videomic?
what do you mean? if you want a good mic... i recommend the new Deity D4 DUO! ua-cam.com/video/_L204xMjL2s/v-deo.html
@@connormccaskill Thanks for the recommendation. I meant the one you showed in the video that only costs 49$
Thanks so much. Been looking in to a Pro camera something to learn the features on. It’s a shame that they’re holding back and not putting out the best product they can buy disabling the auto focus
I know! But the 1080p is good
It crops 4K? Might as well keep shooting 1080 on the 70D. My only question for live streaming is will it shutdown after 15 minutes like the 70D?
Congrats on 20k subs.
Thanks!
great video, subbed 🙂 i have the m50 myself and i love it, still learning a lot about it!
Awesome! Yes it’s a great lil guy!
this is such an "ePIC" review, keep it up! LOL :P
would you say a 15m-45mm lens is a good size?
what is the brand of your glasses and hat you're wearing? let me know
YES YES YES, I check its samples on DPReview and they looked amazing. I didn't believe in Canon's mirrorless but I just bought one right after this video.
Nice video 👍 , could you please give a detail review about video (1080p) . Iam waiting for it
Yup! We’re on it.
hello! im unsure if I should buy the m5 or the m50, i like to travel and take pictures and little video, what would you recommend me?, the m5 would be like 40 dls cheaper, thanks!
Great summary... Thanks!
You need to watch prices. I scored a brand new M50 with the kit lens on eBay for $509.
This video was made right when it came out. Those deals didn’t exist yet
Thanks!
M50 mark 1 has eye detection feature? Don't you have to upgrade to the mark II for that?
great video! Also an interesting bargain. I was a long time Canon user, but felt betrayed by them. So switched to nikon for my photographer and just got an A7Riii for my video and photo work.
Should i buy nikon d5600 for photography plz suggest
nah see since it's metric you would do grams in this case, which is the entire point of using the metric system.
Great content you just helped me out
Would you really have preferred DPAF with 4K in the M50 with a MJPEG codec?
Great review very helpful
Another thing I realized is that in bulb mode we cannot set out time and there is no timer imput!!!
Thanks for great video! Does Tamron 24-70 f2.8 Di VC USD works with Canon M50 with Canon EOS M mount adapter?
Is this camera great for stills and video? Currently have a nikon 3400 looking for an upgrade?
clean hdmi out? I heard from otyher sources that it still had the record botton (red) on the hdmi out signal
When you hit record yes. But when you don’t it’s clean. Which is all you need to do a live stream. Just a clean feed. No need to record.
+Kinotika.........I'm more interested in using it with an atomos exeternal recorder like the ninja star for prores 1080p 422 hq files, but I'm guessing there is no trigger record
No trigger record. But with the atomos you could use it. No idea if its true 8bit 4:2:2. Need to test it.
+Kinotika ........ does the screen blackout when connecting a hdmi device
What would be the m50 for photography?
Is it possible on the M50 to change the autofocus in 4 k so it works. You said the manufacturer disabled it to preserve prices of their higher end range, is there a tweek that can change this??
Can it use ef-s lenses without using adapters? With or without adapters, how is the lens performance on the m50?
Can it handle a line input vs a mic, say from a mixing board?
Yes plz do live videos I love ur guys channel
We are! Every Wednesday we do a live stream! Tune in next week!
Oh for reals😂😅 k well I definitely will
I was wondering which camera is better the m50 or the G1X Mark III?
