I have never owned a DSLR . . and I have been a creator for over 8 years. I have always had some type of fear of moving up to a "Big Girl" camera. . . So I finally decided to grab this Canon M50 to test out. I have never had a camera I can change the lenses on. . .. this is a huge step for me. I have played with it all weekend, and I have to say. . so far. . I am in love. I don't know why I found this jump so scary, but I think I am going to be super glad I finally did this!
The lack of DPAF in 4k totally kills this for me. It was constantly drifting focus on your face at the beginning of the video even in a well lit room when you weren't moving. I love the idea of the M50, but I'm much happier sticking to my M6 until there's a better 4k mode. Thanks for this though, Peter!
It legit drove me bananas. Like I have to manually focus my t3i to film and I’d rather do that then be enraged in post by the camera focusing on the bookshelf behind me. Newwwp
Correct me if I am wrong (I am not super familiar with camera tech). I think it was a bug or glitch when Peter was using the camera in his studio and the focus was flipping out when he was not moving at all with very good lighting. As there is no reason that would be an issue. I'm guessing there is either a focus sensitivity option in settings, or maybe it could be fixed with a software issue? Because that was ridiculous.
It's a start for Canon. No DPAF and serious crop in 4k makes it less useful than it could be, but at least this signals that Canon will be giving us at least some of the features we've been asking for for years in the upcoming 90D or 5DV, whenever they actually arrive...
Why not just film in 1080? Isn't most content viewed from a cellphone even on bigger channels like yours? I know mine is. Less editing hassle, smaller file size, and uses the best features of this camera.
Ive always thought this too (i shoot w a 70d...wish it did 60fps in bigger than 720 tho...a bit old)...BUT since i started editing as a job this year ive come to appreciate 2 big advantages of 4k: 1) you can "crop zoom" to a 1080p frame w no quality loss, and 2) it makes warp stabilizer work much better if you have shaky footage
@@Savage1776_ While I mostly agree, I watch videos in 1440 on my cell and it does look much better but I also have really good eyesight and my wife says she does not see much of a difference so for most people probably won't matter.
Well one benefit of shooting in 4K or even 8k is down scaling, When you shoot a 4k video and end up rendering the final project in 1080p, you have much more vibrant colors and crisp images . Also you have the ability to zoom in scenes in post.
"Canon actually delivered it to my home town, they drove it up here in like a big black case, it was like handcuffed...handcuffed..errr it wasn't...but like...they...we had lunch." 😂This is why I love you Peter, one of the best personalities on UA-cam!
Christian McGuinness good choice. I went with A6500 for shooting everything but myself, and shoot with a RX100 iv for shooting my vlog shots. Check this out as an option. The a6500 is a very nice camera.
Got ya. I've not really looked into the GH5s, I wasn't trying to troll I was being genuine. Like, I do hope it is better, the AF is a complaint I hear a lot about the GH5.
After spending a week researching what camera to buy, I have finally come to the decision. I am purchasing the Canon M50 today! its priced at $999 in Australia and I cant wait to use it for Vlogging. Thank you for your video Blessings
Sorry but it has to do with population size. Oz is 25 mil, USA ≥ 300 mil. I was told years ago that there are more people on holiday at any one time in the US than the entire population of Oz. Our dollar is only worth 70c of US$ so multiply by 1.3.
@@gardnep The original comment said dollars $ which is US. And yes population size does have something to do with it, but it still does not make my statement untrue. The more free the market, the cheaper the products.
Dang, I've been holding off on getting a Canon. I thought this would be the camera to win me over but the 4k crop and lack of Dual Pixel AF killed it for me :/
AdventureSportFlashlights who cares about how it feels? It can feel amazing, but that doesn't make the image or build better. That's like saying I feel like my 2017 dodge truck feels amazing, but in reality the car's build sucks.
The 4k auto focus sucked and was worse than the GH5. Never thought I'd say a Canon AF would be bad. Surly a firmware update will add dual pixel AF to 4k. It does not make sense not to have it. Still a step in the right direction. I'm thinking about getting one to compliment my 80D, but now I am not sure.
Apparently the 90D will be coming in the second half of this year, hopefully that will have both DPAF and 4k at the same time. Surely that wouldn't be too much to ask, especially with how much more it costs than this!
They wont add DPAF to THIS camera in 4k. they do this on purpose. Since its their lowest entry level mirrorless, they will for sure add the DPAF to their future higher tier Mirrorless 4k cams. So that you have a reason to buy the more expensive ones, instead of this cheaper(lower) version.
Agreed. That made the autofocus from the gh5 and g85 seem incredible in comparison. That was so bad. If they didn't have the crop rate and horrible AF in 4k I'd think about it as a backup camera, but that was so so bad. In other news, anybody else see the new a7iii that just utterly wiped the floor with the 6Dmkii. It's not even a competition for the full frame entry level $2000 camera after that. Sony takes the cake. And since the 6dmkii just came out, knowing Canon, it'll be another 3-5 years before they make another full frame in the price range to even come close. Sony will be doing 8k@30 and 6k@60 and 4k@120 by then 😅
This will most likely be because the processor can't handle 4K ànd dual pixel af at the same time. So no, not likely to be added via a firmware update. Canon would've shipped it with that function if the processor could handle it.
2019 south africa Durban: purchased my Canon m50. Love it. Moved up from a Samsung nx30. Slapped on a 50mm len. Great low light. I'm a beginner so this m50 is perfect for me. Peter by the way, ur the man🔥
Yeah, that focus renders 4k unusable, but 1080p footage looks great -- much better than any competition (from what I have seen in those 60 secs of footage lel).
Yeah it looks way better. I wanna say he’s got stuff mixed up. 4K uses more sensor then 1080, so I don’t know why 4K would be small.. I have the Sony A6500 and the higher res you go the wider it gets.
I’m not gonna lie but the focus is really lacking on this camera. It’s just too bad they didn’t put dual pixel AF for 4K. I’m using 70D and the AF is absolutely genius. Great video as always
The answer, unfortunately, no. In 4k, they disable the Dual Pixel AF, which is largely the reason to buy a Canon. Additionally, in 4k they also further crop the sensor (by 1.5-1.7 additional crop factor, I haven't been able to find a fully agreed upon number), so the crop factor is 2.4-2.7x, worse than something like the Panasonic G7, which is about half the price. Canon needs to get past their fear of sales cannibalization and realize that different cameras, even with the same capability, have different markets.
Would be, yes. Would need to be? No. Honestly, looking at the stats on this thing versus the overall market, the price is ALREADY absurd. Almost $1000USD for the camera with kit lens, on a camera that is competing with features on $500-600 cameras. It's frustrating, as someone who previously shot on Canon and has since moved to Panasonic, that Canon continues to drastically stratify its camera gear in order to "protect" the higher end cinema pricing. The GHx and Sony a series will likely continue to erode their market for videography.
I'm currently using this camera and am pretty happy with it. It's been years since I've done any video, so this was a great starting point to get me off the ground running. I don't shoot in 4k though. I seem to get a lot better images and cropping shooting in 1080p.
Shawn Greyling it wasn't just 4k , look at the beginning. It wants to focus on the background and up close. More or less it's trying to focus on everything
I'll wait till Canon releases a software patch to fix that focus (hopefully it's just a patch). Camera body looks like cheap plastic, but I will wait till I actually can hold it. The flip out screen makes this so tempting though.
Canon keep holding features back at the risk of losing users. 1080p @ 120fps was essential IMO rather than sub standard 4K performance. The DPAF is the main thing keeping them in the market. If another brand develops a focus system as good who Knows what will happen.
I bought my M50 less than two weeks ago. Now I did my homework and knew that 4K video wouldn't be 'as good' as the higher priced cameras I was considering. But that's OK with me. I got this because I wanted a mirror-less camera that was also capable of being used for Vlogging. The truth is that back when film was a thing I carried a camera with me everywhere. This is my first digital camera. That's also why I am subbed to your channel. I am eager to learn all I can. At the same time I might consider a 'higher end' camera but not until I really need it and can justify the cost.
Nah, I didn't say it was a terrible camera. I just didn't like the focus hunting which is one small critique. I think it's a solid camera and probably a go-to for the UA-cam community. Already referred it to a few friends looking to make a purch. Besides, I tend to take it off AF, pop it on a tripod, turn on peaking and lock focus.
That focus hunting was disturbing, but that was in 4K mode, wasn't it? That would explain it, since contrast detect in that scene would always jump to the room behind the subject, with rows of black lenses on a white wall. I guess I need to play the video over and confirm that. If it was 4K, it's a non-issue to me. I'm looking for a mirrorless still camera with video capabilities via the eye level viewfinder and that can use our many Canon EF lenses...and AF without spending hours tinkering with AF microadjust (which Canon's lower priced cameras don't have anyway.)
I bought this camera as my first "real" camera. And I think it has everything a beginner photographer needs. I don't shoot many video myself anyway. And I just wanted a compact camera. Edit: Oh and yes the 4k autofocus is pretty much unusable.
@@mrsimpleesarcastik3494 no, not at all. The contrast autofocus that the camera uses in 4k mode is leagues behind the dual pixel autofocus. There are countless conditions in which the contrast autofocus simply does not work as intended.
The focus couldn’t seem to settle from the start. As someone who is currently in the market for a new camera and possibly for vlogging, I think I’ll save up for a better model.
If you are looking at Canon right now, hold out until they release the specs on the 7D3 and the FF mirrorless coming out this year. Otherwise, I think Sony is pretty much the 4K video people ATM. Probably will still be, but I am hopeful that Canon has something up their sleeve. Probably just the Browns fan in me though. Oh Canon, my Cleveland Browns of Japan...
Just bought the M50 MKii last november. And i am pretty happy with it. I have to say that for starting on youtube this camera has helped me improved the quality of what i am making by a lot.
The A6000 series really needs some ergonomic adjustments :P. The M5 and M50 feel much better to hold, and the EVF is in a nicer and more familiar spot. And the M50's flip out touch screen is really nice as well. The M5 Mark II should have a similar flip-out touch screen.
oh yea , i forgot , i'm small youtuber with 60K subscriber , i shoot my video alone ( not daily vloging ) so flip out screen is big bargain, on under $1000 budget , and i also love the lens 22mm F2 , its the wides focal length , the biggest apeture , the smallest form factor lens , and the cheapest , and the is stm is crazy
Hello Peter! I am just a beginner in the new world of You Tube channels and modern photography! I have been watching a multitude of videos on both how to start a You Tube channel and photography and for the life of me I can't figure out why "cropping" and "blurry backgrounds" are so darn important. I don't watch videos and say "Oh goodness, look, that background is not blurry, I can see all the books on his bookshelf" Or..." OMG, this person obviously knows nothing about cropping, just look at the background and all the wasted space back there". Why are these things so talked about by so many big name influencers? Why are these things so important? Also, just wanted to say, I just discovered your channel around a week ago and you, sir, are dynamic! You are such an inspiration as well as an excellent instructor. You have an awesome way of explaining things so that I (as a beginner) can understand more clearly. I hope that someday, I can do what you do, at least half as good as you do!
Been waiting for canon to get 4K, but it still isn't up to par, so I'll be sticking with my Panasonic's for making videos for my channel! (Panasonic's IS and Sony's Full Frame kill Canon)
Vince Opra-Szabó Panasonic's GH5 or better GH5S has much better color than in the past I think it's better than canons especially when you can shoot in Log
I personally feel you should not have talked about the crop factor just yet. It was very confusing for me when I was starting out and it is confusing for most beginners. They do not have to know about the 35mm equivalent focal length until they actually jump from aps-c to full frame. That aside, really enjoyed the video!
TechDevoted any link where I'll be able to thoroughly understand the crop sensor to full frame focal length conversions? Tried Google but most links were confusing lol
TechDevoted why not? It's a huge negative for the camera and anyone spending the money should be aware of it. Better to be upfront about it. Crop factor can take a bit to understand but there's tons of videos online that can explain it easily.
crop factor is easy. using 35mm lens as example on full frame, if you use an aps-c camera (1.5x crop) you just multiply 35x1.5 to get 52.5. so that means with a 35mm lens on an aps-c camera body you get a field of view that is equal to 52.5mm. in the case of a camera that crops when using 4k then you just multiply again by whatever that crop factor is.
Tyrone Thomas he uses full frame but most of his videos are geared towards beginners which means a large majority of his audience is working with aps-c cameras such as the rebels and Sony alphas. To them, the 16-55 focal length (or whatever it is) that is on the lens that comes with the m50 would make sense because this is also an APS-C camera (it is the same language) but because he mentioned all the different conversions not once but several times without fully stating the reason behind it, I feel they would have got confused. Oh, and APS-C sensor is not a negative at all. Sure, it is smaller than full frame but a vast majority of photographers/filmmakers use APS-C and produce stellar results.
I was sold until the autofocus started playing up toward the end... Tempted, but I'll stick to my G7X for vlogging I think and wait/save up for a better upgrade.
I bought this camera as a beginner it seemed the best choice. Only last week I got it to focus on my face and not the background and this has been my best achievement so far. So much to learn. Thanks for sharing. ⭐️
80D better in every possible aspect but it doesn't shoot 4k. M50 is a lot cheaper. ( But there is really not much difference if you know what you do. ) You can record something with the 80D and noone is going to tell that it wasn't recorded with the Alexa. I sure you.
Ooooooohhhhh interesting to see Canon DSLR getting more 4K options out. I went to Sony for internal 4K a couple of years ago. Interested to see what other brands are doing though!
This camera was mentioned by another big youtuber, I knew Peter would have the whole thing ironed out!! THANKS Peter! I just ordered mine from Amazon, I know I am a year late BUT for my budget (0) it offered some big camera features and $599.99 for the bundle is not bad rn!! I just can't spend more than that on a camera I will end up breaking, my gopro has survived a LOT!! LOOK at what comes in those bundles, you may already have some of it. Thanks again Peter
Ever since I bought the camera I've watched this video like a thousand times ,and for someone whose new to cameras ,I always learn something new from it , or even understand certain aspects that confuses me 😂
Jenny&Brett Eating a bean raw is a good test to tell if the coffee is bad, if it taste sharp and not good the coffee will be bad, if it is smooth and not sharp the coffee will be good
About to purchase one of these. They only do a 11-22mm 4-5.6 in the EF-M, otherwise an adaptor will allow the 10-18 4.5-5.6 EF-S. I wonder if there will be a disadvantage to running the adaptor on the 10 -18mm?
Haven't owned a camera since 1983. But watching you and James Popsys has really inspired me! I have done my due diligence and the M50 is the camera I just now ordered, as in just hit buy on the Canon website at the end of your video. I am a total beginner as to a vlog, but, never too old to try. Thanks SO very much for the tips and inspiration. One of my upcoming trips with my camera will be Toronto to visit friends from my time in Dubai. Can't wait to see your town. Cheers
1. Andrew, UA-cam shows the resolution of your display at maximum on mobile and some browsers. You are probably on a 1440p display. 2. I do agree that the footage from the M50 doesn't look nearly as good as GH5 or E-M1.2 footage. Download a sample and view it on a 4K monitor and there is a clear difference... but remember that this is intended to be more of an entry-level mid-range model. For that, it's pretty great: an awesome move by Canon. Seems they've finally woken up.
Milan, heh, I see the 2160p option now. I'm guessing it was just the Google servers taking a while to propagate the 4k version to my CDN cause I wasn't able to see the 4k option in Chrome or Edge, but now I see it in both. Not sure where PM lives, but his CDN might be a fair distance from mine in Chicago. This actually looks quite nice except for the autofocus searching, but I deal with that crap on my G85 all the time so can't knock an entry level too hard for that. And you're right, no point in comparing it to something 2-3x as expensive, but compared to my Panasonic, looks good.
tbh id get this just for the 1080p cause that 1080p quality (even upscaled) is super. 800 bucks for a killer 1080p cam with duel focus and in a tiny body? hell yeah.
I can *almost* forgive the 4K crop, but no dual-pixel AF? Canon is really slipping. May just get a metabones for the EF mounts and go Sony on the next update. Wonder if the Canon 77D size camera will get dual AF with 4k soon?
Two things. If you want to be able to come back to Canon, then adapting your glass to Sony isn't a bad idea, jsut keep in mind your AF will not be as good as it is on native Canon. But for 4K video, you can at least see how you like the Sony and still have the option to come back to Canon without a huge reinvestment in lenses in both directions. Also, I suspect that this camera is showing us what they will do in the future. The 7D3 is out this year, and would bet there will be a 90D after some point too. I would hope Canon puts 4K on both those cameras, and gives them DPAF. Canon always cripples the lower stuff to make the higher stuff stand out. It's stupid, and they still don't recognize how easy people can find info these days on what to buy and what to avoid.
Very good point on the AF, as that would be a main reason to move over to Sony. I couldn't restart my lens collection, and truly do love Canon. I still use my 30D for photography! I do hope Canon stops this process of limiting the models, but we all know why they do it. One thing i'm curious is what codec this 4K camera is using, haven't found much info on that, since its still not even released yet. May have to take it for a test drive, I have the Canon M6 right now.
Definitely agree about the AF thing with Canon lenses on Sony bodies ^^ I tried to switch over to the a6500, and it was a great camera, but I really missed the good autofocus on some of my favorite lenses (in both video and photo), so I saved some money and got a really good deal on an 80D and I've been loving it. But Sony makes great cameras!
I use the Panasonic G7 and it looks great but that crop does get me! Hey Peter ? How do you store your camera in you bag with your mic on to get some quick vlog footage or do you always take it off?
To answer your question at 0:30, I have eaten a coffee bean before... but right off of the plant while I was hiking in Honduras. The raw flesh around the coffee bean is actually juicy and sweet. It is referred to as a "coffee cherry". Many people don't know about that because the bean is removed from the flesh of the coffee cherry before it is roasted. So they can taste quite good to suck on for the juice. I heard someone tell me that in Honduras you can buy beverages that have the coffee cherry juice, but I've never tried it. The more you know.
Body only you can pick up the gh4 for around £550 but with the gh5 it’s still around the £1k mark second hand. I think the gh4 is a cracking camera even know it’s old. I would stick to the gh4 over the canon.
Actually thought this might take my money instead of the Panasonic G80 when I downsize my 80D - but after seeing that 4k crop, the bad AF and the tease of 120fps but only at 720p I'm pretty disappointed 😞 When will canon catch up with the competition?! They definitely have the technology to make an awesome little camera but it just seems like they leave things out or handicap certain features just to troll us 😂
Is there a way to escape the 1.6 crop of the small lense? Like can we put an external thing on it that would make it look like an actual wide angle shot video?
Actually yes. There's something called a "focal reducer" that can be used to do what you're trying to achieve. There are also wide-angle adaptors you can use in front of your lens to counteract the crop. Both options cost money though, and I'm sure they're available for the kit lens of the M50 yet, but you can get them for other lenses. But then that begs the question, if you're going to buy another lens, then why not just get the a very wide angle lens :)
I am between the M50 and the 80D, I know it may sound stupid lol but I can't decide The M50 is good but not that GOOD, but the 80D is bigger and heavier but is great!!, and I want the camera to vlog. I don't know!!!!! lol
For vlog you don't need 80D its too big for whole day of using in my opinion use smaller one M50 has great quality and it's not heavy at all or just use phone they have good enough quality for vlogging
Thanks Peter, I just got back into shooting and vloging and bought this exact set up for my on the go.... Knowing that it crops x times was very helpful, please keep making these types of videos, they inspire me to keep shooing everyday.
I'll stick with my a6500. The focus is wayyyy better than that crap of contrast detection and NO CROP in 4K and 1080p 120fps. Like nice try Canon, nice try. The only thing the a6500 needs to be the perfect vlog/intermediate cam is a flippy screen.
Joseph Garcia I'm really waiting for the A7siii. I've used a buddies a7sii and it's legit I just want the autofocus of the a6500 and a flippy screen! That camera could do some damage to Canon! and 4k 60p would not be bad.
"The focus *does* work when you're shooting in 4K, it's not gonna not focus, like it still does the job..." Check your footage, it actually doesn't work half the time 😂 Love your videos, keep up the great quality and honest opinions!
Just purchased this camera. It seems nice. I love the white one, for a different cool look. I was pleasantly surprised when I opened up the box to see that the white was actually an iridescent-Pearl-looking-white and the Canon logo letters were a rich dark gray color. Gave it a super classy look IMHO
This is a camera I just learned about and was excited that you did a review on. I think it would be perfect for my type of videos. Thanks for sharing your input on this.
I am going to be buying the M50 any day now, it has such good reviews and I like the mirrorless cameras, I am not a vloger just want sharper pics than my Canon EOS Rebel T6 yep entry on ground level. I’m going need some help on getting a couple different lenses
I probably wouldn't replace my m5 with it. The only upsides of this versus the m5 is the side flip screen and 4k.. but 4k without dual pixel af.. no thanks. Id rather see canon improve on the ef-m glass
I'm planning on getting the canon m50. But I'm planning to use it mostly for photography. What lense should I buy for street and landscape photography?
Even thought I'm still a beginner and still learning I'm not excited about this camera....but it's a Peter McKinnon video so I'm watching the whole thing. I still want a Canon 80D using a G7x mark ii currently.
K Soul save your money bud I got the 80d yes great camera but I'd recommend going to the 5d mark 4 and have that full frame. 5d is perfect for both videography and Photography. Yes it's more expensive but well worth the wait
You are Excellence Pete! Thank you so much for this quick unboxing & basic review man. Just ordered my 6D mark lol and seen your video in my feed and was ready to send my camera back but this camera seems nice but I’ll stick to my 6D mark lol until I have the money for the 1D X. Cheers Pete!
Thanks @AtonMaiti I hope the 6D mark ll does well in helping me become a better creative filmmaker until I can handle the more expensive gear. Your #ManifestaionMotivationMeditation video was A..Mazing! I heard the passion and encouragement from it and it spoke to me so I Subscribed :-)
Amazing review. I can see why canon were keen to deliver a camera to you. The only thing I wanted to mention is when you say the lens you have to times it by x1.6 to see the actual number, that is only true with the ef lenses, but with the ef-s lenses, like this one, the number has already been corrected and what you see is what you get.
No. You don’t need to multiply anything. That focal length is for that lens. You COULD multiply a 32mm M lens by 1.6 and it would be similar to what a 50mm EF-S lens would be. This is still unnecessary. I never need to convert focal lengths. I just know when to use my 11-22. 22. 32. 55-200. Etc. it’s easy.
Good review. Despite the bad comments on the 4k video issue, I'm going to buy it after researching other cameras of similar functionalities. Who cares about 4k while guys out there have not fully exploited 1080 yet? This M50 sells now in Hong Kong at HK$3,900 (US$500) with the kit lense 15-45 for the white colour model; $50 (US$6.5) more for the black colour model. I will choose the black one thinking it's more mature for a guy like me at age 60. At this age, can't do too much low angel shooting without pain in the spine if without articulating screens. So, with an articulating screen, this little guy should work for me. I am now using Sony RX10 (first version). It's good. But, my wife finds it too heavy to shoot and refuses to share the fun of photo-shooting/traveling with me, and with it. So, have to turn to lighter ones. RX10 also does not have the articulating screen; not to mention the touch screen, even though it has a larger aparture at 2.8 and longer zoom range. Hope that I am on the right track of extending my shooting and travelling life with my wife. Cheers!
very happy to say i have just ordered my own M50 - i have an event at the end of the month for the NHS and i didn't want to rely on my Powershot G5x as i feel i've reached my creative end with it i didn't want to leave mirrorless but i needed the ability to change lens with a more powerful internal computer at the moment i can take RAW photos at the same pace as a wind-up camera 🤷🏻♂️
Sony A7RIII is a monster in my opinion. The A7III itself is still in comparison between itself and the Sony A7RII because they’re both priced at around $2000
The A6300 was my first camera and I have use it for recording video; if you want to get a camera from the A6 line up I recommend saving a bit more to grab the A6500, just because the 4K can record longer.
What are your thoughts on the new M50? Would you VLOG with this?
Peter McKinnon it's 1:05 am in Nepal and I have no idea 😐
Peter McKinnon YUP!
12:52 am lolololol
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Hi Peter I've been using Sony alpha a5100, do check my video out! It's just a minute
Peter McKinnon plz do a giveaway!!!!
the focus is drifty and bad. it looks like a Casey Neistat video.
CaseyNeistat Hey some people like that style.
Sooo can either of you make a A7III review where you are blown away by how in focus you are????
CaseyNeistat 😂
CaseyNeistat lol.we love that!
😂😂😂😂

M50 isn't dslr tho
NOICE! I can't afford any camera though but, whatevs
1 year has passed. How are you holding up?
@@amaribrown3752 LoL
M50 is mirrorless
The lack of DPAF in 4k totally kills this for me. It was constantly drifting focus on your face at the beginning of the video even in a well lit room when you weren't moving. I love the idea of the M50, but I'm much happier sticking to my M6 until there's a better 4k mode. Thanks for this though, Peter!
Brian, I think im with you on this. Well lit, bright kitchen, not moving, dead centre focus, and it was still trying to figure itself out
If it can't get the AF right while at 4K, there's not a lot of reason to get hyped about 4K is there? (For self-shot UA-cam-style video anyway...)
Brian Miller Magic hopefully they'll address this issue in the upcoming 90d
It legit drove me bananas. Like I have to manually focus my t3i to film and I’d rather do that then be enraged in post by the camera focusing on the bookshelf behind me. Newwwp
Correct me if I am wrong (I am not super familiar with camera tech). I think it was a bug or glitch when Peter was using the camera in his studio and the focus was flipping out when he was not moving at all with very good lighting. As there is no reason that would be an issue. I'm guessing there is either a focus sensitivity option in settings, or maybe it could be fixed with a software issue? Because that was ridiculous.
1080p is waaaaay better here than 4K

@@PeterMcKinnon you are best
It's a start for Canon. No DPAF and serious crop in 4k makes it less useful than it could be, but at least this signals that Canon will be giving us at least some of the features we've been asking for for years in the upcoming 90D or 5DV, whenever they actually arrive...
Why not just film in 1080? Isn't most content viewed from a cellphone even on bigger channels like yours? I know mine is. Less editing hassle, smaller file size, and uses the best features of this camera.
Exactly!
The sharpness in the 4k is Op

I shoot Nikon, but your suitcase comment was the funniest highlight of my day! Thumbs way up!
god, the cringe...
Well there it is, 9 years with Canon and this has cemented the fact that I'll be jumping ship to the GH5s.
Christian McGuinness good choice. I went with A6500 for shooting everything but myself, and shoot with a RX100 iv for shooting my vlog shots. Check this out as an option. The a6500 is a very nice camera.
Hope the GH5S focuses better than the GH5. At least as bad as the M50 just showed us...
Kevin Diaz cine Len's don't have auto focus anyway so I'm not really worried. Even so, the GH5s samples I've seen still aren't as bad as the m50
Got ya. I've not really looked into the GH5s, I wasn't trying to troll I was being genuine. Like, I do hope it is better, the AF is a complaint I hear a lot about the GH5.
i second the a6500
After spending a week researching what camera to buy, I have finally come to the decision.
I am purchasing the Canon M50 today! its priced at $999 in Australia and I cant wait to use it for Vlogging.
Thank you for your video
Blessings
$999 really?! Your got ripped off. I got mine yesterday for $630 with accessories.
$898 is about the best I can find so under a grand in Oz is a good buy. Pity we are not in US. I think it will be a good buy.
@@gardnep yup, the more free the market is, the more competition to force the prices down, I just became an American citizen two days ago, and I love
I thought this would be the camera to win me over but the 4k crop and lack of Dual Pixel AF killed it for me :/
SDG Danny yep, same here.. I was like this is it.. And.. Nope.
I agree... that focusing sucked.
yeah. me too, but im gonna face it and go with sony for mirrorless
EXACTLY!!!! wtf canon?
SDG Danny yup. ditto. that crop is way to much, and no dual pixel.. no thank you. gonna have to stick to my Sony's :)
Digging those two lights in the left corner! Aesthetically pleasing af.
Haha why thank you. I agree.
Pun intended?
I love that you told us how it "feels" in your hands. Most people don't consider that but for me it speaks volumes about a product build quality.
AdventureSportFlashlights who cares about how it feels? It can feel amazing, but that doesn't make the image or build better. That's like saying I feel like my 2017 dodge truck feels amazing, but in reality the car's build sucks.

Peter mckinnon: 7am is early

The focus hunting while in 4K mode is heavy! It's all over the place. If you are a Canon guy/gal, I'd wait till next iteration.
Jay Downey word
How did that work out for you?
Panasonic: “I’m pretty sure I have the worst 4K AF on the planet.”
Canon: “Hold my beer!”
Actually I think Nikon is even worse
😂😂😂
Yeah, I've heard that. I've never had one.
lol 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 i am practically weak to my knees with laughter
LOOOOOOOOOL
RowlWool they don't add it in because it would undercut bigger more expensive bodies.
Peter by the way, ur the man🔥
is it just me or does the 1080p look more like 4k than the actual 4k stuff? Weird.
Plus the focus searching in 4K is balls.
This doesn't have the full sensor readout power, this camera 4K is unusable. It's just reading a small part of the sensor.
Agreed. A7S ftw.
totally agree. i was seriously thinking the same thing!
I’m not gonna lie but the focus is really lacking on this camera. It’s just too bad they didn’t put dual pixel AF for 4K. I’m using 70D and the AF is absolutely genius. Great video as always
Charlie W yeah the 4K autofocus is really disappointing. I could live with the crop and 24fps, but that contrast detect AF needs serious work.
I think part of the confusion in the exact crop factor in 4K (UHD) is that the EIS introduces its own bit of crop.
I seem to get a lot better images and cropping shooting in 1080p.
the focus is struggling so much in 4k eh. Dunno how I feel about that.
I fully agree. We are in the age of 4K, no dualP AF is a nono.
Shawn Greyling it wasn't just 4k , look at the beginning. It wants to focus on the background and up close. More or less it's trying to focus on everything
terrible auto focus in 4K, probably they will release a higher version with DP auto focus like they should have
Canon is contradicting itself with this release. A flip out screen for vlogging but no dual pixel focus? It doesn't make sense.
I'll wait till Canon releases a software patch to fix that focus (hopefully it's just a patch). Camera body looks like cheap plastic, but I will wait till I actually can hold it. The flip out screen makes this so tempting though.
The constant refocus is really annoying....
120fps but only in 720
4K but huge crop and no DPAF
Guess Canon are holding all that back for the M5 Mark II
Canon keep holding features back at the risk of losing users. 1080p @ 120fps was essential IMO rather than sub standard 4K performance. The DPAF is the main thing keeping them in the market. If another brand develops a focus system as good who Knows what will happen.
MarkIII at least.
The AF Sony's is best than DP AF canon.
I'm surprised how much hunting the AF was doing. A little disappointed by that.
You concentrated on one negative, without balancing any other views, I'm a little disappointed by that.
You said practically nothing in your original post. I didn't say that you said it was a terrible camera either.
Its not the wonderful DPAF we al know and love :(
That focus hunting was disturbing, but that was in 4K mode, wasn't it? That would explain it, since contrast detect in that scene would always jump to the room behind the subject, with rows of black lenses on a white wall. I guess I need to play the video over and confirm that. If it was 4K, it's a non-issue to me. I'm looking for a mirrorless still camera with video capabilities via the eye level viewfinder and that can use our many Canon EF lenses...and AF without spending hours tinkering with AF microadjust (which Canon's lower priced cameras don't have anyway.)
Peter uploaded a video hmmm should i continue my essay or watch it?

thats a noobie comment,,,the video is very usable
@@mrsimpleesarcastik3494 no, not at all. The contrast autofocus that the camera uses in 4k mode is leagues behind the dual pixel autofocus. There are countless conditions in which the contrast autofocus simply does not work as intended.
So theres a 3x crop in 4K . . . . and Canon wonders why when it comes to mirrorless Sony and Fuji has taken over.

Mike Wittig the 4K crop means it's unusable for vlogging in 4K

Just bought the M50 MKii last november. And i am pretty happy with it. I have to say that for starting on youtube this camera has helped me improved the quality of what i am making by a lot.
If only the Sony mirorless cameras had a swivel screen....
The A6000 series really needs some ergonomic adjustments :P. The M5 and M50 feel much better to hold, and the EVF is in a nicer and more familiar spot. And the M50's flip out touch screen is really nice as well. The M5 Mark II should have a similar flip-out touch screen.
Yeah if something lime the A7 mark 3 had a swivel screen it would be perfect.

I always seem to have an awesome day when Peter uploads a video. *Coincidence?*
Just checked my mailbox, no M50 in there, come on Canon!!
Been waiting for canon to get 4K, but it still isn't up to par, so I'll be sticking with my Panasonic's for making videos for my channel! (Panasonic's IS and Sony's Full Frame kill Canon)
If Panasonic had dual pixel af and Canon color science... I guess we can’t be that spoilt.
Vince Opra-Szabó yup, that’s the dream
Canon "color science" is soooo talking point bullshit.
Vince Opra-Szabó Panasonic's GH5 or better GH5S has much better color than in the past I think it's better than canons especially when you can shoot in Log
I need to get this camera
Cropped 4k with no dual pixel AF. What is even the point of this camera?!
Sure, it is smaller than full frame but a vast majority of photographers/filmmakers use APS-C and produce stellar results.
i'm going buy this camera after quarantine 😍❤️🤙🏻
same, just wait if i am not going to bankrupt in meantime

Sudarsan Anandam that's not usable in m50 so... 80D better and can get in discount too

Not a DSLR, but yeah.

Jenny&Brett Eating a bean raw is a good test to tell if the coffee is bad, if it taste sharp and not good the coffee will be bad, if it is smooth and not sharp the coffee will be good
Jenny&Brett yes!!!!
About to purchase one of these. They only do a 11-22mm 4-5.6 in the EF-M, otherwise an adaptor will allow the 10-18 4.5-5.6 EF-S. I wonder if there will be a disadvantage to running the adaptor on the 10 -18mm?
The viltrox one is a speed booster so you gain about an extra stop of light and it reduces the crop factor

I've got my eyes on this for a vlogging camera. After doing my homework, I think this is ideal for vlog style filming.
That 4k looks more like upscaled 2k.
I'm only seeing 1440p option in the settings...
800 bucks for a killer 1080p cam with duel focus and in a tiny body? hell yeah.
I feel like the 1080 actually looks better on this camera, weird
Philip Reber I noticed that aswell
I definitely agree with you. The background blur in the 4K isn't as smooth as the 1080.
Same
Agree
Me too.
Definitely agree about the AF thing with Canon lenses on Sony bodies ^^
I tried to switch over to the a6500, and it was a great camera, but I really missed the good autofocus on some of my favorite lenses (in both video and photo), so I saved some money and got a really good deal on an 80D and I've been loving it. But Sony makes great cameras!
I switched to Sony from canon and I don’t think I’ll ever go back TBH
E-N-T-R-Y L-E-V-E-L. The only thing that is slipping CoderMan is your grasp on reality
I use the Panasonic G7 and it looks great but that crop does get me! Hey Peter ? How do you store your camera in you bag with your mic on to get some quick vlog footage or do you always take it off?
Joe Marano haha I do it just remembering to switch from 4K to 1080 to get more frame.
Joe Marano yes for sure I would love to get that lens! Just have to decide if I want the glass or getting a new gh5. It’s a tough choice!
Can anyone explain to me why it crops at 4k? I though 4k was a bigger image that’s why you can zoom in on it in post and still keep hd quality
I want that slow motion and weather proofing. That is the reason i want the GH5 I am thinking next year unless there is a GH6 in sight.
It's seems to me that the 4K autofocus is pretty unusable at moments. Even when you were talking to the camera and barely moving.
nice review and now waiting for it to come to Indonesia
Hi Peter, you made this camera sexy ha. I want a tiny camera to use with off-camera flash. U still using this one ? did you sell it ?
this was my first real purchase into a camera and i love it. spent 1k in my camera gear(camera took the bulk of it) but i love this little thing.
I swear whenever you say what’s up everybody, you’re actually saying BUTTS UP EVERYBODY 😂👌
RAGEfit Because of this comment I will be facing butts up for this video! Wish me luck!
How is it compered to the GH4/5?
Automotive Mike gh5>gh4>.......>m50
the m50 is an entry level camera. it's $780. The GH5 is $2,000. You pay for what you get (essentially).
Body only you can pick up the gh4 for around £550 but with the gh5 it’s still around the £1k mark second hand. I think the gh4 is a cracking camera even know it’s old. I would stick to the gh4 over the canon.
you can get gh4s for a steal now. still one of the best.
It's worse than the g7 and twice the price
But then that begs the question, if you're going to buy another lens, then why not just get the a very wide angle lens :)
yep with a speedboster an EF wide angle lens
Speed booster does the Job...
1080p looks better than 4k, because in 1080p you are in focus and not something else
That AF is Terrible AF.
Epic comment!
Thank you! I see you are into ecommerce. I have over 100 business lesson videos on my channel. :)
Iconic!
Lol dead Af
god damnit!
I am between the M50 and the 80D, I know it may sound stupid lol but I can't decide
The M50 is good but not that GOOD, but the 80D is bigger and heavier but is great!!, and I want the camera to vlog. I don't know!!!!! lol
For vlog you don't need 80D its too big for whole day of using in my opinion use smaller one M50 has great quality and it's not heavy at all or just use phone they have good enough quality for vlogging
Christianestilo I’m debating the same thing also but I think I’m leaning more towards the 80d
Christianestilo if you have budget for 80D go for that , get the best you can , I bought a M50 , but still using my note 8 for vlogs mostly
Canon m50>
Thanks Peter, I just got back into shooting and vloging and bought this exact set up for my on the go.... Knowing that it crops x times was very helpful, please keep making these types of videos, they inspire me to keep shooing everyday.
Step in the right direction but needs to have 4k dual pixel + at least 30 fps + no crop.
I'll stick with my a6500. The focus is wayyyy better than that crap of contrast detection and NO CROP in 4K and 1080p 120fps. Like nice try Canon, nice try. The only thing the a6500 needs to be the perfect vlog/intermediate cam is a flippy screen.
I just bought my a6500 and that 4k is so crispy, but I 100% agree with you on the flippy screen. Sony why you torment us so?!
Joseph Garcia I'm really waiting for the A7siii. I've used a buddies a7sii and it's legit I just want the autofocus of the a6500 and a flippy screen! That camera could do some damage to Canon! and 4k 60p would not be bad.
a6700 is right around the corner, flippy screen & all .... even 4k @ 60fps?
So you're saying the double priced camera is better? No way!
What about the RX100V? I think that camera is more comparable to the M50
"The focus *does* work when you're shooting in 4K, it's not gonna not focus, like it still does the job..."
Check your footage, it actually doesn't work half the time 😂
Love your videos, keep up the great quality and honest opinions!
The coffee beans are not actually a bean. It is a seed. Yes I am fun at parties thank you very much.
A bean is a seed. Therefore a Coffee bean is in fact a bean. Yes, I’m sure you are great fun.
Erlend Dalheim 😄
@@mikeom1308 That a bean is a seed does not mean that a seed is a bean. Therefore it's a seed and not a bean.
Erlend Dalheim stop spreading your seeds everywhere 😂
This is a camera I just learned about and was excited that you did a review on. I think it would be perfect for my type of videos. Thanks for sharing your input on this.
Awesooome! I really wish Canon will make 120 frames at 1080. That would smash the market!
they do xd lol
Sixten Nilsson I think he meant one that’s not like 4-8k dollars lol
Yeah, my bad..
yeah.. wouldn't smash that much ^^ sony and panasonic have that features already
Yeah, but with the features Canon has, adding those would be a complete package..
The only upsides of this versus the m5 is the side flip screen and 4k.. but 4k without dual pixel af.. no thanks. Id rather see canon improve on the ef-m glass
a comparison between canon 200d and canon m50 for youtube as beginners would be a sight to see.
I'm planning on getting the canon m50. But I'm planning to use it mostly for photography. What lense should I buy for street and landscape photography?
Can I ask, if you use mainly photography why not the 250d? Same ish price but better HDR pics... Only asking as I'm struggling to decide myself
@@leo76253 oh ok thank you..... I'll take that into consideration.
Prob too late but the EF-M Sigma 16mm
@@humansrants1694 thank you I'll take that into consideration
@@leo76253 becoz its a mirrorless camera
Getting this camera in two months to start vlogging. I know not the best but a good place to start. Thanks for the review man
120 FPS at 720 is also such a pain. Wtf canon. Just make it 1080p 🙄
Yupppp
RAGEfit that’s exactly why I’ll not be purchasing this camera. 720 why??
Even thought I'm still a beginner and still learning I'm not excited about this camera....but it's a Peter McKinnon video so I'm watching the whole thing. I still want a Canon 80D using a G7x mark ii currently.
Well thanks for watching!!
K Soul save your money bud I got the 80d yes great camera but I'd recommend going to the 5d mark 4 and have that full frame. 5d is perfect for both videography and Photography. Yes it's more expensive but well worth the wait
K Soul can i have ur IG
Kevin Start sure thing it's ksoulmusic here's the link instagram.com/ksoulmusic/
research what a sony a7r3 can do ........ it makes canons line up a bunch of antique toys in a world of spaceships
You are Excellence Pete! Thank you so much for this quick unboxing & basic review man. Just ordered my 6D mark lol and seen your video in my feed and was ready to send my camera back but this camera seems nice but I’ll stick to my 6D mark lol until I have the money for the 1D X. Cheers Pete!
jonathan jenkins I think you’re making a good choice
Thanks @AtonMaiti I hope the 6D mark ll does well in helping me become a better creative filmmaker until I can handle the more expensive gear. Your #ManifestaionMotivationMeditation video was A..Mazing! I heard the passion and encouragement from it and it spoke to me so I Subscribed :-)
I'm really considering this camera. The lack of DP AF in 4K is disappointing, but it looks so good in 1080p that I might be able to look past that.
Just wrap the coffee grinder in a heavy towel, and hold it close to your chest. It's quite then!
AdventureSportFlashlights Hahah. You got me laughing.
When I saw the set of cameras i was like "I hope i had just even one to learn photography 😭😭😭"
If you want a mostly photography based camera get the canon t7… it is pretty affordable for what it is
Amazing review. I can see why canon were keen to deliver a camera to you. The only thing I wanted to mention is when you say the lens you have to times it by x1.6 to see the actual number, that is only true with the ef lenses, but with the ef-s lenses, like this one, the number has already been corrected and what you see is what you get.
no it hasn’t lol
Cheers!
i bought this! Highly recommended camera in this price range ❤
Fell the same way :)
How much does it cost in pakistan?
@@MuhammadAli-jw1lx its 88k
Do u use it for photography and I’d it well
@@mostpandabear1167 Best for video and good for photos
very happy to say i have just ordered my own M50 - i have an event at the end of the month for the NHS and i didn't want to rely on my Powershot G5x as i feel i've reached my creative end with it
i didn't want to leave mirrorless but i needed the ability to change lens with a more powerful internal computer
at the moment i can take RAW photos at the same pace as a wind-up camera 🤷🏻♂️
the 4k crop hurts me
the 4k no DP AF hurts me
the no 120fps hurts me
the no ibis hurts me
off to get a sony camera bye
Sony A7RIII is a monster in my opinion. The A7III itself is still in comparison between itself and the Sony A7RII because they’re both priced at around $2000
canon sux
A6300 is really good for the price
So long,farewell.....🙄
The A6300 was my first camera and I have use it for recording video; if you want to get a camera from the A6 line up I recommend saving a bit more to grab the A6500, just because the 4K can record longer.
Yah, the contrast focus and no dual pixel in 4K is a deal breaker. Canon, you were so close to having an awesome selling camera.
