  • In this video I share how to make this easy knit style crochet chunky blanket that takes about 10 hours to make.
    The technique used is very easy but if you find it tricky , there is an alternative version at the end of the video that is more beginner friendly.
    The blanket in the video measures approx. 4' x 5' ft ( 50" x 60" in) using a 12 mm hook.
    If you want to resize your blanket, here is an easy formula to help you figure out how much yarn you need. Please note that these numbers are based on the yarn I used. If you use a different weight or brand, results will vary. If you have any questions, leave it in the comments and I'll help the best I can.

    I had a lot of fun working on this chunky blanket over the weekend. 😍 Technically, you could make this in a day but it will be a long day. This one took me 10 hours so I would say it's more of a weekend project to make it more relaxing. I am so in love with this stitch and didn't want to stop! Getting to sit and watch netflix all day helped that feeling.😆 Hope you enjoy the video and give this one a try. xx

      This is only the 3rd thing I've ever crocheted but you walked through it and showed us how to do it so well that I'm 1/4 way done and you would never guess I was a beginner!!! Thank you SOOOO much for being so beginner friendly! I was so intimidated at first but you really helped make it such a fun, relaxing process and its really helped my confidence in this art. Thank you so much for this awesome and helpful video!! 🩷

    Hello. I've been crocheting 40+ years but never tried blanket yarn. Well, when I ordered variegated worsted in denim blues, the vendor sent me an extra box full of variegated blues Bernat Blanket. When I called the store and told them about it I was invited to keep it. So I'll be making this as a birthday present for my daughter before January 8th. Love your calming, very complete tutorial. You're a great teacher. (I'm a school teacher😊).

    I just wanted to say thank you for showing this technique!! I have seen plenty of chunky blanket tutorials, and this is leaps and bounds better than the BLO option. It works up quick and is so easy to do. I just finished my first full blanket using this, for my daughter and everyone has loved how it turned out.

    Beautiful blanket. Love the color. You worked well with this yarn. When I have tried working with this yarn it wants to twist on me. Maybe I am crocheting too tightly? Yes , did you see Biscuit trying to sneak in? I told him , “forget it Buster, this one’s mine!” Not that he’ll listen 😆
      I found the twisting stopped when I started tensioning the yarn between my forefinger and middle finger instead of threading through my hand like I normally do. Don’t know if that is for sure what made the different but it was a game changer for me with this yarn.
      Have a great week, Jennie, and thanks for watching ! 💕

    Well, I finished this blanket (4 skeins) and had to buy a size 12 Prym hook to get into the stitches. My beloved Clover was too thick at the point. I love the result but probably won't make another as almost every stitch had to be "helped" thru the hook, and it was multiple days of work. 😛Interesting crochet method! It is for my use so I guess it was worth it. Didn't need a border. Thank you for the video.

    Does using the BLO method create a larger blanket then for the same amount of yarn? Your sample looked much wider than the one going through the 3rd loop, but it looked like you worked up the same number of rows (but less chains).

  • @shannonhering1567
    @shannonhering1567 5 місяців тому

    New here. I’m trying the easier one because well, I’m new and the first one was beautiful when you did it but mine? Hard no! Lol! So my question is, if my swatch/sample chunk curves, am I doing the rows too tight? It twists. It turns. It curves. It has a mind of its own!

    • @PlayHookywithMe
      @PlayHookywithMe  5 місяців тому +1

      Did you try making the initial chain looser? That will be a good place to start. If you have a hook that is one size larger than what you’re using for the blanket , that would be best to start the chain (then go back to your regular hook for the rest) . If not , just do your best.
      Otherwise, yes, it sounds like you have a tight tension .
      Your yarn might be twisting on you a little but I’m sorry I don’t know how to correct that. I haven’t had that issue but others have mentioned it happens to them. 💕

    • @PlayHookywithMe
      @PlayHookywithMe  3 місяці тому +1

      Unfortunately not. if you really want it longer , you’ll have to start over.
      Or just continue adding more rows to make the other side longer . That will just mean the direction of the stitch design is longer in that other direction.

    I am very new but I think I can do this blanket easily. My son wants this one and he is 6’2” so he wants it long enough to hang over his feet when he’s relaxing. So my yarn is a 6 but the biggest hook I have is an 11. And obviously 70 chains is only gives me about a third of the length I need for him. I understand from your video that I don’t have to keep track of stitches thankfully but with using my size 11 hook, my chains are smaller than yours. Will that be a problem further into the project? Will it give the blanket a little more weight/bulk?

    • @PlayHookywithMe
      @PlayHookywithMe  6 місяців тому +2

      It will make it only slightly tighter but yes you’ll have to go more than 70 to get the length you want. I measured mine and I even should have gone more like 75 to 80 chains to reach the 5 foot mark (it didn’t expand like it normally does for me when I’m starting with the width measurement )
      My point is … yes , definitely make your chain longer to start … based on the height you want and the blanket will still be beautiful and have similar tension as the one you see with an 11mm hook 👍🏻💕

      Sorry for the multiple comments. I am deleting those. And thank you for the quick reply. I made one for my husband that took about 9.5 skeins and very heavy. I used a hdc in the back loop and Al thought it’s beautiful and heavy, it also took me quite a while working one that big. I’m going to trying yours today and see if I can make it quicker (and less expensive) LOL

      Thank you for the info! I got sidetracked this past weekend and didn’t get to work on this new project. I am glad to know this one will be quicker and less expensive. The one I made for my husband with the hdc is close to a twin size because he is so tall and it is so heavy that it feels like a weighted blanket. Thanks again ladies for the helpful info.

      You can , but it’s more difficult. The video that you’ve left a comment on is a great option if you know how to crochet.
      If not , I’ll be teaching how to finger crochet an easy blanket soon which will work well with your yarn.

      I’d recommend you redo it with a larger hook and try to relax your tension. I know that’s hard as a beginner, it takes time . So, a larger hook is your best bet. ❤️ if it’s completely finished , then the only thing I can think of is to “block” it.

      @@debd5759 thanks for the clarification- you’ll get very close to the 50x60 with the 4 skeins. I’d recommend that you start your chain with the 50inches like you want and then if it doesn’t quite reach your 60 inches then you can always get another skein later.
      You’ll probably need to start with about 75 or 80 to get the 5ft mark.

      It’s the same kind of concept but that is not the back loop that you’re going into. The back loop is right above it 👍🏻
      You’re going into the “3rd loop”
      (Front loop, back loop, 3rd loop)

    • @asaldanapr
      @asaldanapr 7 місяців тому

      @@PlayHookywithMe I don’t think so, I’m going into the back loop f the v on top, not the third loop. It was the first stitch I learned (fastest and easiest way to make beanies and twisted headbands) but a darn yarn eater! Now I learned to make the last 4-5 stitches of one end (front and back) a slip stitch to make that top end of a beanie smaller, so when you sew up the top end it’s not so bulky and it looks nice and rounded.

    • @PlayHookywithMe
      @PlayHookywithMe  7 місяців тому

      @@asaldanapr for this particular blanket , you’ll see if you work into the back loop, you’re going to lose the v stitch that appears . For this pattern , you’re working into the loop that is behind the back loop . Just try it both ways and you’ll see the difference.
      The back loop will give you a ribbing effect like I show you later in the video.
