I grew up in the upper Methow Valley and almost every Saturday was spent in the North Cascades National Park. Now I live in the middle of the state and only get up there a couple times a year.. My Mom and I would build little fairy houses.. with moss for grass and pine cones for trees and houses and paths and fences made of twigs and rocks.. we'd sit there for hours in the deep green woods.. just listening to the wind, water, and critters. It was a great place to grow up!
and by the way.. it is pronounced "met'-how"

I have been hiking the North Cascades of Washington State for 30 years. The best time to hike Easy Pass is in the fall when all the Latch Trees at the top turn Golden. I have hiked a large portion of the trails in the North Cascades and Iove it here.

Welcome to my country! My wife and I were just up there yesterday. If you want to see the most beautiful forests in the lower 48 states, you've got to go into the Olympic National Park! It's my all time favorite for lush, prehistoric forest.

Doing both of these in the same day is very hard. Easy Pass is a hard hike but the most beautiful hike in late September and early October when all the Larch Tress are Golden. Right near the top is one of the largest Groves of Larch Trees.

when i was a teen (17 and I was emancipated, )my pe teacher , her husband and 15 students, had a pct hike, went from mexico (American side) to Canada ( American side). we started may 1st and arrived august 1. I will forever remember that summer and we all got A's and got to take a train back to the bay-area California. have fun! 1983

If you can make it go to the northwest corner of Washington and hike the trail to the coast. Its called the cape Flattery trail. There is also a lighthouse to see

Live in WA state. Was just in Winthrop last weekend and took high way 20. It's just an amazing place to explore. Lake Diablo goregous!
Right up near the top of Maple Pass you will enter into the North Cascades National Park but she is right if you stay on the trail you will not enter the Park. The best time to hike this trail is last week of September until 2 weeks into October when all the Larch Trees are Golden. Have hiked this trail a dozen times both clockwise and counter clockwise.

i was just there a couple days ago! i ran the section of the PCT north of hwy 20. the best run of my life! i wish i could have stayed there longer but i had no cell coverage and had to work :(

That first mushroom is likely a Gyromitra esculenta, or false morel. The hard shelf mushroom is Ganoderma applanatum, or artist's conk. Both are quite common. Thanks for pointing them out!

While your in the area, you should travel the i84 highway from Portland Oregon to the dalles Oregon. one of the most beautiful Hwy that divides oregon and Washington. The Hwy has a river dividing it as well .lots of camping spots
I have been kiteboarding on the gorge several times and we both love the hikes all along that area 🤗
I love Winthrop. Grew up going there every month on our way to my grandparents cabin on the lost river. Best memories.

Oh my gosh, you have shown me places in my own state that I have never seen. I know WA and the PNW are beautiful, but it's so nice to see parts I have not. I have been to the N Cascades and Winthrop before but never hiked the area. Thank you!
You're in my hood! Next time hit the Cinnamon Twisp Bakery for that sticky bun! Also, don't drive so fast through North Idaho. Lots of great stuff up north near the Canadian border, like Lake Pend Oreille and Priest Lake! Take Hwy 20 all the way back through Washington.

I’m not sure if you’re planning on Ca. at this point or not but right now we’ve got over 60 wildfires burning. I live in the Central Valley about an hour and a half from Yosemite. The air is covered in smoke and ash and people are being advised to stay inside because of poor air quality. So-if you WERE planning on Ca. Maybe put it off for awhile. Just a suggestion.
Whatever you choose to do- stay safe and have the best time.
