I'm going to also get them a hammock. One of my bunny brothers is an adventurer, so the hammock would be an adventure for him more than just another place to sleep. Although they both get plenty of adventure. They sleep and eat inside in a very large cage and then every day we either bring them out to the porch or an outdoor grassy run we created so they can run around and do binkies. Funny you bring up rabbits pushing out their bedding so they can lay down. My bunny Luna has been doing that, even when I just clean the cage she'll push it all out. Today I'll be trying to use a towel lol.
I use it for litter. It's easier to get than the other stuff you mentioned recycled paper cat litter. Plus I clean it out every other day. I don't have the luxury to use towels ( I can only do laundry on weekends). Plus he likes to chew on them and I can't keep them in his cage without fear of him eating it. As for where mine sleep, he likes a dog bed. He uses the edge as a pillow. Mostly during the day I'll find him in his hut laying on the bed. At night he'll sleep on the hard floor. He also likes grass straw mats to sleep on.
I have been going through that realization for months. When I first got my rabbit we use the bedding, but like you said, he just ended up digging it out. Now there’s a towel if he wants to use it, and I just use that bedding for litter. I find it works really great for that. And I know it’s been said before, but God your channel is so underrated I have learned so much from it probably more than any other resource, and I have used quite a few resources over the last months.
I buy cheap $6 40 lb hard wood pellets to absorb my bun's urine and to prevent the smell. And it's not bad. I would agree that other bedding brand gets soo expensive.

I use horse stall pellets aka compressed/pelletized pine wood pellets as a thin layer on the bottom of my bunnies' litterboxes and since they don't like the feeling of poky wood pellets on their feet, I put a small amount of hay on top. Their litter boxes eventually get more and more hay on top of the wood pellets, and then I clean them out every few days.
My bun has a small fleece blanket that she sometimes lays on but most of the time she just likes the floor. She HATES bedding. Her litter is wheatgrass pellets.
Hi Amy I love your videos I've got two rabbits that are free roam and they are my kids every week your videos confirm something else about the way I treat my rabbits Ricochet and Maggie have a litter tray in the corner. I do use the bedding that is shown in the video. However, I put pine pellets in the box first and then some paper bedding on top of the pellets in hopes that the bedding will make it more comfortable for the rabbit when they are standing on the pellets. Also, I change out the litter and hay twice a day.
Wow, thanks!! I’ve always used white paper bedding and my bun always launched it everywhere. And he always cleared the space he would lay down in! Now it makes sense!! He’s free roaming when I’m home but has to be in his house when I’m not. This will save money and he’ll be happier!

Our rabbit has always slept on the floor either laid out on his belly or flopped on his side like a dog and it's really cute. He doesn't go near anything like pillows or blankets when he wants to sleep and we don't need to buy any bedding materials. For his litter I bought a bin from Walmart and some metal cooling trays that fit nicely over the top of the bin. Then I drilled 6 holes around the outside of the bin and zip tie the cooling racks over the top. Fill that with litter material and put their food on it until they learn to pee in the bin. Worked for me and our bunny is free roam and doesn't pee on the floors at all.
And thank you for addressing the pine and cedar . Not apt of people know it causes problems I argues with someone at the pet store bc they said it was “safe” and my info was wrong

I don't know of what im doing is ok. I use normal wood shavings for bedding for my two baby buns. My dad made the wood shavings for me from wood blocks, and my buns tend to chew on it. I don't want them to have any health problems, so I want to know what could cause health concerns.
for wood shavings, it's best to stay away from aromatic woods, like cedar, but I think shavings that you created yourself from wood blocks would be fine.
@@TheBunnyLady thanks for the advice! I also want to give my bunnies a pine cone that fell on the ground and I want to dry it and clean it the proper way, but I do not want to take any risks giving it to them

At 1:58 a whisp of cobweb or rabbit fur falls into screenshot on the left side. It's fascinating and quite balletic. Edit: I've come to rely on a steady stream of soiled straw to mulch my garden. I agree about the mess and the bugs so Sunday is breakdown day where I put the bunnies on some "pasture" outside and breakdown their hab area, pull it all outside and hose it down, sweep the floor. Then I give them a biscuit of straw to pull apart when I put it all back together. They are going to get hay everywhere anyway. A bale of straw is $10 and lasts for months. The fodder store even sells polythene bags you can put the bale into before you cut the strings so it's all contained. Before that I had a high wind come in and blow away a whole bale and the tarpaulin I had over it to keep it dry. There was straw all over the carport. lol.
Is the point not to use "bedding" or a form of litter altogether. By the end of the video you mentioned a litter product. My main concern is something to absorb the moisture/odor. Bunny dad for over 20 years but always willing to learn more :)
Just the shavings in the bottom of a cage. You can, and should, a litter box. Keep the litter box nice and clean. I save money by using free newspapers as a litter bottom with local barn hay as a topper so they don't sit in their pee and get urine scald.
I only used paper bedding for a small period as litter for them. Then switched to small pet select wood pellet litter, after that, just stopped using litter because my bunnies will DIG and DIG at the litter, regardless at the time, and much prefer the large amounts of hay on their puppy pads. And boy do they love flat surfaces. I have a shelf, a four tier shelf, that holds most of my stuff, but the very bottom has a cushion and a fleece blanket over it as a hidey spot for them. But Xiao Wu LOVES laying on our vent because it's made of metal and really cool when it starts getting hot in the house. Tu Shen will flop just about anywhere he wants, even at my feet.
Very Helpful! I keep it in my bun's litterbox and he is doing great with it, sometimes he'll kick out some of it outside of his box. Personally, i find that with the bedding AND the peepads its less likely to seep through making it simpler to clean. Your buns are adorable, thanks for the bunny content!
i use a paper based bedding for my bunnys litterbox but only a mat for any type of bedding that he lays on. cant imagine the money id have to spend if i was wasting the paper bedding on his enclosure!
I’ve always used something like flannel for my bunnies bottom of their crates. They constantly chew it up or dig it out of the way so they can lay on the hard plastic. I always thought that had to be so uncomfortable! We use wood pellets for litter and I have a few small pieces of flannel or fleece or towels laid out around the crate if they want it! Most of the time they opt to lay on the cold hard plastic 🤦🏽♀️. They both free roam (separately bc one female would legit kill the other) and even still, they choose to sit in front of the fan or sit against the cold window! Such precious little babies!
I was a bit confused bc I use hay and bedding and a pee pad only in my rabbit’s litter box. I don’t use it outside of their litter box or any of that. I clean her box each week cause she doesn’t soil it very fast. I just have a mini dog bed, a shirt of mine, and a blanket from my rats one for comfort and two to get used to our smells. Otherwise I let her have the cold floor nice and open for her to hop, lay down, binki, stand on her hind legs etc. she sometimes dogs in her litter box but out of the month I’ve had her in a playpen, instead of a hutch (which I will never put her in again) she’s only dug in her box 2-3 times. It doesn’t bother her, it’s one of her favorite places to be in her pen. So I wasn’t sure if you meant don’t have bedding for the pen and everything else or just the pen? If you could clear that up for me, that would be awesome!
Thanks. Just got a rabbit and as I was listening to the hard surface part I looked over and rabbit was laying on the hard surface not the bedding. Just like you said.
Hi Amy, I’m curious about using paper bedding for a digging box as an enrichment toy with other toss toys. Would paper bedding be a good choice with easy cleanup (using a shop vac or broom) or is there a different option you would recommend?
I personally use bedding and bedding pellets together for my rabbit's cage and change it twice a week, my rabbit doesn't spend much time in the cage (I only put her in there when I'm going to sleep) so smell and bugs aren't an issue for me but I'll see if I can find an alternative for bedding
Do you have any carpet recommendations? I’m moving rooms with my rabbit and I’m trying to find a large carpet that isn’t too hard to clean but also doesn’t slide around too much.
I am trying to locate bedding info for baby rabbits, no fur yet. Not a breeder. I found them in a shallow nest. Seems they would have drown with the rain we've been having.
i get confused about putting hay in the litter box. would they not just pee on it? i put my hack on a rack in front of his litter box but not inside. do they know better not to eat the pee pee covered stuff? i totally agree with the no bedding tho. i tend to use a fleece towel. i bought a tone of them from the dollar store and swap them out. if they get really covered i just throw them out. could even go buy fabric and have an endless supply.
I can’t believe you used towels and rugs for the bunny enclosure because they chew on everything and it can both have a blockage in their stomachs and intestines if they eat the towel or the rug
Question...... My rabbit has access to an outdoor hutch. He does his poops in that particular enclosure....which is fine during the day and when I'm at work. However, now its getting chilly in Oz, I have to close an adjoining balcony door (for access to that area) so he remains indoors and enclosed in his cage (during 9pm to 6 pm). How to I retrain him to understand 'now that you're indoors, you use this litter tray for your poops' ? . The only reason I ask, is that i find he holds in his poops till i open the balcony door again.
Okay I have 2 rabbits well you can get a decent size ex pen that is for dogs in Amazon where you can decorate the space and let your bunny to roam in that space, also get a Cat litter box where you can put in pee padsalso adding Timothy hay and pellet bedding from Small Pet Select they're really good and healthy for your bun, they also sell chew toys or you can make DIY chew toys for your bun to play.
What about the pine pellets from Tractor Supply? I have been getting good results with those pellets but now I am getting worried they could be bad for my bunny. I recently bought 2 bags
I bought my rabbits a memory foam flat dog bed to lay down on, and instead they lay next to it on the hardwood floor... They tend to prefer carpeted floor but they definitely don't care to have anything "cushiony".
I have a question so in my rabbits cage I can just place a towel on the flooring and could she pee on that poo on it as well and then i just wash it so basically what you are saying that instead of shavings i could just place a towel in her cage?
I use plain white bedding in her litter box only. I clean it every 1-3 days. She free roams my house. I was so worried for a second when I saw the title.
Does this advice apply to outdoor bunnies as well? We are in winter time right now in the Pacific Northwest. I currently use hay on the top layer as bedding and straw on the bottom layer. I feel like I want to keep something down for them. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Our rabbit used to use the litter box but now she destroys her cage by moving her litter box and peeing or pooping on the rubber based mats we have. It’s not a daily thing we have to strip her pen of the mats ash everything. Any advice?
I have my bunnies in a cage and I use bedding should I use a litter box? they are always in there I feel mean keeping them in there all day but they are up stairs and I also have a dog and he stays down stairs I'm afraid that they will fall down the stairs 😥 please help me!
I use paper based litter for my boys. Then put shavings on top. They were neutered 2 weeks ago and spend a lot of time pushing around the contents of the litter box (particularly after changing) and are still leaving a couple of poops outside of the litter box. Does anyone have any experience of this behaviour? Does anyone know if this is them saying they don't like the shavings? or is it just their hormones haven't finished dropping?
I used to use bedding in Pebbles' litter tray, but I had a hard time keeping my cats from trying to use it. I don't have to tell you how dangerous that is to a rabbit. I bought some chenille bath mats. She loves those, they don't attract my cats, and I can wash them. It saves money, and she loves pretending to dig on them.
My bunny lives in the laundry room on the concrete floor. I live in the Pacific Northwest. I worry about him getting too cold this winter. Your channel and blog have been my go to for information as a first time rabbit owner.
I bought my 2 new bunny (bought them yesterday) a hiding house made from hay. And i set up a larger cage for them on thesame time today. Not even 20min passed and there were bunch of poop inside. :( im sosad. Anyone know how to fix this?
I always found that wood shavings is the worst bedding for rabbits because it gets stuck to their butts and so puts them at a higher risk of flystrike. My rabbits free roam but I use shredded paper for their litter trays and clean it daily and give them their hay in cardboard boxes.
Hi I just came across your channel I bought a bunny for my daughter it came with a cage and it also came with bedding but do we need to have a litter box and a cage or can she also do her business in her cage
We are new bunny owners (she just showed up in our yard!) and I've noticed her chewing on towels we put in her cage. Right now I have bedding in there instead because I don't want her to eat towels! Should I just put towels anyway??? She is outdoors (but comes inside for play time daily :)

i use paper bedding so what my holland lops have A hutch and they love there paper bedding in they litter box and i just use my vac so thank you amy
The way you are talking is gorgeous ❤
There was straw all over the carport. lol.
This was very helpful, thanks!
Me too. I only keep it my fur baby's litter box along with a puppy pad as a liner. Easiest clean up!
i use a paper based bedding for my bunnys litterbox but only a mat for any type of bedding that he lays on. cant imagine the money id have to spend if i was wasting the paper bedding on his enclosure!
Thank you! I knew I didn’t need it because my local bunny rescue lady educated me when I adopted my bunnies but I kept wondering what it was for!😂
Yes but you do need bedding for outside rabbits in hutches.
My bunny eats his bedding fresh4life natural paper how can I avoid to do that?
THANK YOU. YOURE AWESOME
My rabbits try eating towels or basically anything I put in the hutch
4:34 & 5:35 Ellie and Teddy demonstrate the typical 1/2 sploot 🤣🤣🤣💚
Thanks. Just got a rabbit and as I was listening to the hard surface part I looked over and rabbit was laying on the hard surface not the bedding. Just like you said.
I love your channel. Are you a vet?
I use bedding for my bunnies playpen. I don’t mind having to change it and sweeping the messes they make with it.
Hi Amy, I’m curious about using paper bedding for a digging box as an enrichment toy with other toss toys. Would paper bedding be a good choice with easy cleanup (using a shop vac or broom) or is there a different option you would recommend?
It’s a safe choice
Thank you
I personally use bedding and bedding pellets together for my rabbit's cage and change it twice a week, my rabbit doesn't spend much time in the cage (I only put her in there when I'm going to sleep) so smell and bugs aren't an issue for me but I'll see if I can find an alternative for bedding
What do you recommend for a rabbit that eats everything he can get his teeth on.
Do you have any carpet recommendations? I’m moving rooms with my rabbit and I’m trying to find a large carpet that isn’t too hard to clean but also doesn’t slide around too much.
My rabbits make their own bedding by shredding and destroying the rugs and carpets I put in for them.
What type flooring is best for the giant rabbits weight bout 16 pounds was told rabbit wire is not good to use
I can’t believe you used towels and rugs for the bunny enclosure because they chew on everything and it can both have a blockage in their stomachs and intestines if they eat the towel or the rug
can u use it in your litter box?
Question......
My rabbit has access to an outdoor hutch. He does his poops in that particular enclosure....which is fine during the day and when I'm at work. However, now its getting chilly in Oz, I have to close an adjoining balcony door (for access to that area) so he remains indoors and enclosed in his cage (during 9pm to 6 pm). How to I retrain him to understand 'now that you're indoors, you use this litter tray for your poops' ? . The only reason I ask, is that i find he holds in his poops till i open the balcony door again.
Typo .... 6am
Is it ok to use it in a bunny’s litter box?
I have a question so in my rabbits cage I can just place a towel on the flooring and could she pee on that poo on it as well and then i just wash it so basically what you are saying that instead of shavings i could just place a towel in her cage?
I should buy a black carpet and place SUM foods and also I will add toys
My rabbits prefer grass or dirt. Dust baths are common as well.
I use plain white bedding in her litter box only. I clean it every 1-3 days. She free roams my house. I was so worried for a second when I saw the title.
Me too. Exact same reason. ;)
Does this advice apply to outdoor bunnies as well? We are in winter time right now in the Pacific Northwest. I currently use hay on the top layer as bedding and straw on the bottom layer. I feel like I want to keep something down for them. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
It shouldn't be an outdoor bunny honestly
Our rabbit used to use the litter box but now she destroys her cage by moving her litter box and peeing or pooping on the rubber based mats we have. It’s not a daily thing we have to strip her pen of the mats ash everything. Any advice?
So I dont get it what are u supposed to use for bedding instead and it's too much wrk to always wash the blankets I think.
What litter pellets are those?
Very helpful and important info your sharing.
My bunnies love to sleep on their aspen shavings. They will work on them until they make a nice nest with them.
Thanks helpful
Then there’s my rabbit sleeping on my bed with me 😂
Hello I'm Amy and my rabbits pop a lot how can I stop pop❤
Thank you!☺️👍🏾
I used to use bedding in Pebbles' litter tray, but I had a hard time keeping my cats from trying to use it. I don't have to tell you how dangerous that is to a rabbit. I bought some chenille bath mats. She loves those, they don't attract my cats, and I can wash them. It saves money, and she loves pretending to dig on them.
Hi
Wait how can I prepared my buns litter box instead? I usually put 1/3hay 2/3 bedding
would barely straw work?
Aspen wood is fine
Hi I just came across your channel I bought a bunny for my daughter it came with a cage and it also came with bedding but do we need to have a litter box and a cage or can she also do her business in her cage
i understan what tou saying!
Thanks for information❤
I got a litter tray in my rabnits gage with woo
We are new bunny owners (she just showed up in our yard!) and I've noticed her chewing on towels we put in her cage. Right now I have bedding in there instead because I don't want her to eat towels! Should I just put towels anyway??? She is outdoors (but comes inside for play time daily :)
never keep rabbits outside! keep her indoors only.
