Most people have no idea how intelligent and loving bunnies can be. I had my first free roaming bunny, Lulu, a Netherlands Dwarf for 9 years. She was an incredible girl!! The best pet I've ever had. I now have Kiki, a Holland Lop, my second free roamer and she's doing great. Hasn't missed her litter box once and very playful and healthy!!

This is such a thoughtful topic that many rabbit owners wouldn't even know could exist (depression) within a rabbit. Operative word and take away that you pointed out many times is the word " combination". Very insightful observation and remedy methods that only an experienced rabbit owner could recognize. I'm sure this channel has been so helpful to so many rabbits and humans alike. Thanks for being here

Not all rabbits can be free roamed. My house layout does not allow for it and we tried once and my bun is very mischievous and got in trouble real quick. So at night and when we are gone, she is in a very large cage. She is a dwarf so it’s plenty of room. And then she has a very large xpen for when we are home. Keeps her happy and safe. She is a single bun but I am home almost all the time so we are buds. So do what works for you and your bun.

I had a depressed rabbit once. she was a freeroam at that time, when my sweet 11 year old bun passed away she just went in to shut down. Obsessively digging at the carpet and very agressiv to anything placed out of order (human or object). It was heart breaking to see her like that.
Unfortunately i just started a new job and could not provide the attantion she needed. It was hard but i gave her to my mom she has a lot of garden space to hop around and dig and she found a new friend she is much happier now.

What a great channel. Not sure though if you have issues with a very common and potentially deadly upper respiratory condition called Pasteurella in the US. I'm in the UK and my rabbit has had this all her life. So far I've managed to keep her as healthy as possible for 9 years and counting with tonnes of vet visits, time, patience and money. However she's extremely sociable but can never be bonded with another rabbit as it's so highly infectious. Would be good to see something on this as its barely covered on the Internet.

We got my baby a friend for the purpose of avoiding depression. I work almost all the time and realize I may not be working from home much longer and will have to leave the house for 9-10 hours a day. Thus we got him a friend, to avoid a chance of becoming depressed. And BOY did I spend 100s of dollars on toys for them. I do recognize when our babies are still normal. Purposely waking us up 10 minutes before our alarm, zooming around the room, race into the bathroom where I hide their giant box of hay as we try to go to the bathroom. If we don't find them being themselves, we know something isn't right. Gotta have our troublemaker and diva be normal to make our daily lives so much better.

My Netherland dwarf went through a depressive period when he was about 9. He pulled his fur out and stopped being food motivated during training. He was very socially withdrawn and stopped coming when called. I had recently moved him into another room but he was a v anxious bun and when I moved him back to my room his symptoms stopped.

My rabbit has been depressed since we lost our beloved other bunny due to old age 3 months ago. She's free roam,, but is definitely less playful and curious since our other bunny has been gone. I try to enrich her environment and give her extra cuddles but at the end of the day, she wasn't meant to be a solo bunny. I'm not ready to get another rabbit at all, however.

I'm still not 100% sure if my rabbit is sick or depressed. Just a few days ago she would binky, she would have zoomies, she would chew on her toys and absolutely loved her treats. Then we opened up her space (she was in a playpen, but we bunny-proofed our livingroom and kitchen so she can roam). At first, she was super curious and explored everywhere. Now, just a day later, all she does is sit and do nothing. She doesn't show interest in food or treats, she hardly acknowledges when we pet her or interact with her, she doesn't chew on the toys she used to love. But when we put her back in her play pen during the night, she rattles the cage. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. I plan to take her to the very to get spayed, since the place I got her from never did that. I'm going to ask the vet, but what can I do in the meantime?

    • @Elliarts54
      @Elliarts54 7 місяців тому

Probably the closing her back in her playpen? When a rabbit is reaally into running around snd energetic and doing binkies. If you close them back to their playpen, they can get hella mad, or slowly/quickly fall into depression, because they can’t stimulate themselves the way we can. My suggestions to try would be either 1) remove the playpen completely, or make it more wider, then it was, if your rabbit is prone to digging out of fun. Chances may be, she is feeling the way she is because she’s confused at why is she suddenly in a playpen again.
Or 2) I know that sometimes it may be impossible to keep rabbits run free through the night, I myself don’t keep my rabbit run around at night due to a traumatic experience I had with my previous rabbit. What you could do, in this case, is to make her playpen as comfortable, as possible. For example toys, something to dig into (unless you have the playpen in your bedroom), some sheets she can lie into, or something to poop into. For example, when we did our playpen, we made it bigger sometime ago, because our rabbit grew a lot. When we did it, she suddenly became much more happier, then before and would even flop to her side. Rabbit’s surroundings can affect them a LOT actually.
And last, but not least, as everyone says. Better be sure, then lost. I’d visit veterinarian who specialises on care for animals like rabbits etc. Anytime you get the feeling they may be sick, take them to the vet. We released my rabbit had a hay stuck between her teeth this way, too. Anytime a rabbit stops behaving the way they were, it’s a visit to the vet for my family☺️

    • @Elliarts54
      @Elliarts54 7 місяців тому

Or also, you could spend as much time as possible. Rabbits are social creatures, so they need lots of attention! Make sure you play with her often, if not every day. It could help, too. Also making sure she’s not too energetic before going to bed, create a routine, when you’re calmer and show her night time may not be too bad after all. But I’m sure by the time I’m writing this, you already took her to the vet. Just commenting in case I can help☺️

My rabbit Willow passed away last year. It was so devastating and sudden but I had a feeling she had been depressed for a very long time since when I adopted her she had this lame front arm:/. I adopted her so I could help her have a happier life. She never seemed to completely ‘recover’ She was always been allowed to free roam and I had her become friends with my other Bunny Athena but it didn’t really do much more in fact she avoided interacting with Athena except sometimes. I felt that Athena was humping her sometimes and I didn’t like how she ‘tolerated’ it so I separated them. When I went on holiday and left her with a sitter, she stopped eating and even with emergency treatments when I returned she passed away. I just have been looking for closure I suppose. It still makes me so sad 😞 thank you for your video.

I was wondering if there was anything I could do to help get his skin back to completely healthy or is just getting rid of the mites enough and the rest will take care of itself? Small towns in India have no proper rabbit vets. Greens are heavily sprayed with pesticides & God knows what we do to a rabbit even after washing off as much as we can. Hay isn't available here. He's free roamed & we share the room, but lately he's constantly depressed. Don't know the cause but I do worry about dental problems & he does have frequent stomach upsets. My rabbit whenever he was forced in a small space he looked sad. He didn't deserve to be shoved into a cage and not be given the attention he needed. Even with the neglect he was the sweetest, most affectionate and brave rabbit. All he ever wanted was to be loved, but because of that he was very much a pushover. When he started showing signs of something being wrong he fell over and could get up because of his previously damaged eardrum. I was worried about his weightloss and my gut was right about it being kidney failure. The poor thing got fucked over again and a couple months before he was euthanized he dislocated his ankle.

Im really worried about my brothers rabbit. It doesnt have too many signs, the main one being a lack of energy. He just sits in one spot and doesnt do anything most of the time.
My brother keeps him in a hutch, and hes there most of the day (the door doesnt stay open).
Ive told him to get some bunny proofing stuff so that we can let him out without worrying about things but he thinks its stupid.
My brother always thinks he is right, and he is smart but hes very ignorant, and he doesnt listen to me when it comes to alot of things. (Hes 25 and im 17. Although he and my family tell me im very smart, they treat me like an idiot whenever it comes to anything that sint school related.)
I feel so bad for his rabbit because even though i love him so much, i really wish my brother would give him away so that he could go to a wonderful home where he'll be taken care of properly. Its very obvious that my brother thinks "Well if hes alive, then it must be good enough".
My brothers works, but he goes out with friends alot after work or on days off. It upsets me bc he hardly spends time with his rabbit, and even when he does, its for a short amount of time and he mostly takes pictures. Ik he loves his rabbit, but hes just not fit to take care of him in my opinion.
Im going to start spending more time with the rabbit to see if i can hopefully make him less lonely and happier. But im going to start working soon since i iust graduated high school. Ill still try to spend more time with him but also my brother is trying to move out next year. If he moves out with this rabbit, and he treats him the same way as he does now, im really afraid he'll fall into depression. Because the main ones who spend time with him and let him out of thay damn hutch is me and our dad, and if he moves, he'll have nobody. And that really scares me.
Im really sorry for the long rant. Its just.. nobody else is gonna listen to me. And i dont know what the hell to do, and im afraid for this rabbit. Hes only 1 years old and I want him to have the best possible life. I really hope that if my brother moves out, he'll give the rabbit to someone who will take care of him and give him the best possible life.

So I keep two bunnies separated because one is mine then the other is my sister but yesterday my sisters bunny escaped and I think she was fighting with my pet boy bunny so my pet bunny ended up being sad by the looks and today he wasn’t running like he did he ran for about 3 minutes and was laying next to me and wanted to lay down on the floor and isn’t eating as usual as he did two days ago

I hope they are spayed and neutered. Or they they both boys? You sure don’t want an oops litter.

Theres not much you can do except litter train your Rabbit for now. Once he's old enough to be fixed (Neutered) ...the problem of pooping and peeing everywhere should go away.
About chewing the carpet...maybe he does that coz he's not getting the spunk out of his hay and his teeth are paining. You must remember...Rabbits teeth grow about 4 inches per year! Ouch that's really painful.
Maybe you can consider keeping some nice wooden chew toys around for him to chew at night?
Don't give up on him! With proper training he will be allright. You must ensure the hay you're giving him is of good quality.
A rabbit will generally be less destructive if the Hay you leave for him at night is fresh and to his taste!
      Hope this helped!

I suggest you start with a small space so that the rabbit can figure out his own space then slowly adding more and more space for them to run around in.
When I got my rabbit he used to poop everywhere so I made him a small cage in a corner to stay in bc my parents didn’t like that. I slowly added more area to his cage till he’s freeroam and until now he still goes back to that corner of his to do his business

Hi to anyone reading this! I need some help! I would love to adopt a bunny and have been thinking about it for quite some time now but i live next to a busy road and it can get very loud during summer when cars drive around playing music and just like speeding you know! So do you think i can adopt a rabbit? Some people have said that rabbits can get used to the noices and it can become a norm but some have said they wont get used to it and will suffer so can anyone help me?

Most rabbits will be able to get used to traffic sounds pretty quickly. As a precaution, I recommend meeting them first and trying to choose a rabbit who is not super anxious or fearful when you go to adopt a rabbit

Depression is very common among single kept bunnies. After doing rescues for 4 years I can say that 95% of the rabbits that are depressed will stop being depressed once they have a partner. The other 5% stop being depressed once they are freed of living in a cage.
I personally think it’s really sad that people still deprive their pets from this very basic and natural need.

Fun fact housing your rabbit alone increases its chance of developing depression.
