Blizzard's cinematics are always amazing. Their art department in general is fucking on point. If only the story tellers could live up to the job the art department does consistently and wonderfully.
I know my comment is a little late and I've seen this cinematic like a million times, but something just occurred to me - impirious summons his spear from the heavens while being in the "heart of heaven"??? Where that spear coming from, another even more heavenly heaven?
Nick W Actually he means that striking Diablo with the spear took 49 durability from the spear and 1 durability from the helm so when diablo hit back the weapon was destroyed and his helm remained at 49. ;)
Imperius is such a great idea: the highest archangel, the most powerful warrior of all creation and flawlessly designed. However, I am really disappointed about the way he was portrayed in battle. There are three fight scenes involving Imperius: this one, the one against Tyrael and the animated one. And in all three he loses in a matter of seconds. Not to mention the fourth scene where the player defeats him as a mini-boss. They should have introduced him as an unbeatable being prior to that scene so that we are all the more surprised how easily he loses to Diablo. When I first saw this scene here, I fully expected him to lose because I never saw him win.
To be fair, he did kill that giant demon in the animation. And diablo in this fight is the prime evil in person. A real big hotshot that even the god in the diablo universe could barely handle. The fact that Imperius was brave enough to face him was a n extraordinary feat. But yeah, I do agree that while blizzards intentions weren't to make him look bad, it DOES make him look bad if you just look at the surface.
It’s a rendition if a true battle between god-tier supernatural beings. Everything is decided in one or two moved. Despite his misgivings Imperius would never WANT to kill Tyriel and in his fight vs Diablo he had no idea Diablo has become the Prime Evil.
Yea, they did him dirty, after getting his spear shattered, he literally just stand there and wait to get stabbed, after we see his agility and teleporting skills.
The right way to do it is like they did with Hulk in Avengers Infinity War. He was extremely strong in each movie and the only one who defeated him was Stark with the Hulkbuster and even then, he had to level a whole city block to do it. Then Thanos came in and punched the shit out of him in like 45 seconds, establishing him as a villain to be taken seriously.

The odds were pretty stacked against Heaven: Malthael gone, Tyrael gone, the Angeris Council in shambles and Imperius a dictatorial and arrogant despot, all three Prime and all four Lesser Evils combined to reform the Prime Evil (essentially Tathamet reborn) and no Anu (Tathamet's polar opposite) to support them. Which makes you wonder: If all Greater and Lesser Evils could reunite in the Black Soulstone to become Tathamet 2.0, could the Angeris Council have done the same or something similar?
Well I think one main problem, was the fact that Malthael was gone for his own goal, and Tyrael was banished from heavens to a mere human form. Meaning that the Angeris lost a LOT of power.
Tathamet is whole with the 7 evil combined but I think in the lore, Anu isn't complete, some of his parts became the angiris council and some goes to unknow dimension/world. So its really unfair fight.
Technically yes, it would be possible according to lore, but it would never happen for the same reason it took so long to happen with the 7 Evils, each archangel values their individuality and disagrees too much on fundamental principles to work together well enough to willingly fuse. The other 6 Evils had to be forcibly and permanently consumed by Diablo to recreate a shadow of the prime evil, I say a shadow because some of Tathamet's power is still dispersed among the Burning Hells and various lesser independent demon lords and powerful evil beings. Even the 7 Evils together do not control 100% of hell, they don't even necessarily have the majority, they are merely the greatest singular "pieces" of Tathomet. The same applies to the Angiris Council. As for fusing together into a Prime Virtue, the council would never willingly do that, but also none of them would ever stoop so low as to consume the others by force. Maybe Malthael after he fell into madness, but even then he seemed to have some measure of respect and care for his siblings since he did not harm Tyrael, but he was willing to absorb the 7 Evils out of desperation despite how unstable and dangerous that was.

Diablo 1 is a Prince, Diablo 2 is the Wanderer. they are all male, that why Diablo have so much muscle and male form. But in Diablo 3, his host is Leah, a female. Well, it's 1 vs 7 in this fight. Imperius vs Diablo, Baal, Mephisto, Andariel. Azmodan, Belial, and Duriel. So basically, it is Imperius vs Tathamet. Diablo didn't kick his ass. It was still an even battle. We don't even know who would have won in Wrath at all. There are so many possible outcomes in that fight.

Oh but i also forgot to mention that my monk is easily insta killed or drained to death in 2 seconds by those pesky wraith that hide in the walls and have those "beams" that drain you and you cant "dodge" them cuz they are not projectiles... you can only "dodge" them with your stats... error 404 logic not found
Thats just looking at it literally. That battle is diablo as the prime evil against a fraction of Anu in imperius. The nephalam your monk are powerful as all hell even more so when the worldstone is destroyed.
I remember watching this scene for the first time when I was 5 years old. Now I'm almost 16 and I still watch this scene, it never gets old. I wish I could play Diablo 3 for the first time again ❤

All the archangels wouldn't stand a chance again Diablo's Prime Evil form, let alone Imperius trying to take him on by himself, I'm surprised he actually scratched Diablo.

You do realise the reason why Imperius lose was due to it not Imperius vs Diablo. It was Imperius vs all 7 demon lords aka Tathamet clone. He was facing Diablo, Baal, Mephisto, and four others. Had the Archangels stay together, they would have defeated Prime Evil Diablo. Kratos faced gods that aren't even on par with them. Zeus and all the Olympian Gods will be like a complete joke to them. I mean, they did that to the others. The Archangels were the only ones to rival with them. Kratos would have been easily corrupted by them which was the reason why Tyrael hid it before Malthael took the Soul Stone. Apparently, Diablo and Malthael were the only ones not corrupt once they had contact with the Soulstone but Tyrael knows Imperius would have been corrupted and he was said to be the most powerful individual in all Creation. Diablo is one of the three Prime Evils which is why he couldn't get corrupted while Malthael is actually more powerful than Prime Diablo and Imperius due to his aspect.
Cave Man Do you know why the Nephalem was able to hurt any of the Prime or Lesser Evils in the first place? Because they have demonic and angelic blood from the union of one of the archangels and Mephisto's daughter. Can't hurt them otherwise. It's always who has demonic or angelic blood could hurt either one. Malthael in death aspect is able to defeat Diablo easily. Just like Tyrael stated that the reason Malthael couldn't get hurt is because Malthael is Death itself. And he gains more power every death happens. Even the Nephalem stated that they couldn't beat Malthael at late game. That animated movie, we have no clue who would've won between Diablo and Imperius. Pretty sure Imperius would have won since it stated that he's the most powerful individual of all creation and I guess the second or who could rival him is Diablo. Terror and Valor are two opposites so, maybe that's why both Diablo and Imperius are seem as equal in combat. Both are empowered by their respective aspects. Sanctuary without worldstone then humans wouldn't exist. The Sanctuary wouldn't exist either since the Worldstone was the one that created it. And the Nephalem birth is the result of union between(See above), not because the World Stone. Malthael would have stop him since he can't really hurt him with all that until he received something. And if he go on a killing spree, he would have empower Malthael even more. Mortal Kombat, you're talking about game mechanics instead of lore which is pretty much equivalent to non-canon. Your dreams of Kratos getting Nephalem powers is just darn funny, how in the world would he even get the power? Transmitting angelic and demonic blood into his own? devin campbell I think it's his untempered arrogance and desire for combat that charms many fans. He is a pure incarnation of wrath and valor, which despises change, and most of all, despises the Nephalem because of its potential to surpass both Angels and Demons.
devin campbell imperius is one of those characters that stays and does nothing until shit comes to their doorsteps, while other told him so many times before that its coming and it should be stoped, so many of those characters on so many movies, like the ones that would not fight on the 300 movie. Imperius sucks :P
Burak Ertug He couldn't best Justice in combat because he was trying to judge Justice. Tyrael had done nothing wrong and was facing the Archangel of Valor with no fear and no doubt, it was obvious Imperius could not win.
+Calamity556 The only reason I can come up with is that Diablo in-game is meant to be a Warrior (tank) and this feminine version of Diablo doesn't represent what a "tank" should look like, so they used a previous version of Diablo who is more broad. I may be wrong, but that's what I think.

No if an angel dies the simply die however when an angel dies a new one is born from the crystal arch the source of all angels. This is also true for archangels for if imperious dies a new archangel of valor would be born to take his place.
Tryael did not die his form was just disrupted from the blast of the worldstones destruction forcing him to have to regenerate his physical body. Angels in the diablo universe are unique in the sense that their "body's" are actually husks that their wings control angels wings are the angels actual form and if they are destroyed the Angel dies with it damage to the body can harm the angel but not completely destroy it only the destruction of the wings can fully kill one
And if you think about it, Diablo is technically more of an "it" than a "he" or "she". Those are simply gender assignments based on human understanding. He seems to take on the physical attributes of whomever he was last possessing, but still looks demonically inhuman regardless.
While I did have the same idea of the Evils being genderless, there is actually a piece of in-game lore that denies this. In act 2 Cain's Lost Satchels contain descriptions of the 7 Lords of Hell and in one of them, it's stated that "Andariel was the only female Evil."
Fun fact, its not just the fact that diablo took a female host that he has the feminine body shape, Anduriel (i think thats her name) is apart of him now, which also contributes to that body structure

1:59 when Diablo impales Imperius, it reminds me of that opening cinematic of Darksiders when the big demon rises out of the crater with an angel impaled on his claw.
at least Tyrael is out and about trying to do something. Imperius only stayed there. Couldn't slow Diablo in anyway, Couldn't even at least scratch Diablo (would had been cool if he could at least slice a horn off diablo or something, or made a wound on diablo, had something to show for at least, or discover something that could help, anything at all) I hope he redeems himself in the next game, because as he is right now he should be unceremoniously fired.
I really like this cinematic! Unlike most people think in the comments, this is pretty skillfully prepared! I was a bit suprised that so few liked Imperious's beatdown, since he was blinded by his own might and ignorance/arrogance, but i can't argue that his design is badass. All this lore would make a magnificent movie or even serie, where maybe Imperious can have a bit more screentime to show his awsomeness... :)

The voice actor for Imperius is really good, especially at 1:50. Sounds like he's genuinely in a lot of pain, you don't even get that from movie stars

Diablo didn't kick his ass. It was still an even battle. We don't even know who would have won in Wrath at all. There are so many possible outcomes in that fight.

No, the prime evil can easily defeat Imperious. Diablo base form is much weaker and has been killed by Imperious.

You do realise the reason why Imperius lose was due to it not Imperius vs Diablo. It was Imperius vs all 7 demon lords aka Tathamet clone. He was facing Diablo, Baal, Mephisto, and four others. Had the Archangels stay together, they would have defeated Prime Evil Diablo.
Kratos faced gods that aren't even on par with them. Zeus and all the Olympian Gods will be like a complete joke to them. I mean, they did that to the others. The Archangels were the only ones to rival with them. Kratos would have been easily corrupted by them which was the reason why Tyrael hid it before Malthael took the Soul Stone. Apparently, Diablo and Malthael were the only ones not corrupt once they had contact with the Soulstone but Tyrael knows Imperius would have been corrupted and he was said to be the most powerful individual in all Creation. Diablo is one of the three Prime Evils which is why he couldn't get corrupted while Malthael is actually more powerful than Prime Diablo and Imperius due to his aspect.
Cave Man Do you know why the Nephalem was able to hurt any of the Prime or Lesser Evils in the first place? Because they have demonic and angelic blood from the union of one of the archangels and Mephisto's daughter. Can't hurt them otherwise. It's always who has demonic or angelic blood could hurt either one.
Malthael in death aspect is able to defeat Diablo easily. Just like Tyrael stated that the reason Malthael couldn't get hurt is because Malthael is Death itself. And he gains more power every death happens. Even the Nephalem stated that they couldn't beat Malthael at late game.
That animated movie, we have no clue who would've won between Diablo and Imperius. Pretty sure Imperius would have won since it stated that he's the most powerful individual of all creation and I guess the second or who could rival him is Diablo. Terror and Valor are two opposites so, maybe that's why both Diablo and Imperius are seem as equal in combat. Both are empowered by their respective aspects.
Sanctuary without worldstone then humans wouldn't exist. The Sanctuary wouldn't exist either since the Worldstone was the one that created it. And the Nephalem birth is the result of union between(See above), not because the World Stone.
Malthael would have stop him since he can't really hurt him with all that until he received something. And if he go on a killing spree, he would have empower Malthael even more.

Angels in the diablo universe are unique in the sense that their "body's" are actually husks that their wings control angels wings are the angels actual form and if they are destroyed the Angel dies with it damage to the body can harm the angel but not completely destroy it only the destruction of the wings can fully kill one

And if you think about it, Diablo is technically more of an "it" than a "he" or "she". Those are simply gender assignments based on human understanding. He seems to take on the physical attributes of whomever he was last possessing, but still looks demonically inhuman regardless.
While I did have the same idea of the Evils being genderless, there is actually a piece of in-game lore that denies this. In act 2 Cain's Lost Satchels contain descriptions of the 7 Lords of Hell and in one of them, it's stated that "Andariel was the only female Evil."

I really like this cinematic! Unlike most people think in the comments, this is pretty skillfully prepared! I was a bit suprised that so few liked Imperious's beatdown, since he was blinded by his own might and ignorance/arrogance, but i can't argue that his design is badass. All this lore would make a magnificent movie or even serie, where maybe Imperious can have a bit more screentime to show his awsomeness... :)
