Andromeda Galaxy: I'm coming at you Milky Way...
Milky Way: You underestimate my power....
my powers have (multiplied by 10) since the last time we met
But we were like brothers
I have a small pinis
if we're slightly more massive then we physically are the lower ground
Andromeda: Don't try it!
Milky way: **enraged screaming**
First: andromeda is less massive than we thought
Then: milky way is more massive than we thought.
Now: milky way is bigger than we thought
Andromeda: I don't feel so good
Edit: 400 likes are you kidding me, I also forgot to include that our galaxy has also a very rare shape we have only found 40 of them.
It's bigger then we though but still not as big as Andromeda.
I've had it stuck in my head for decades that Andromeda is twice as big. The never ending problem of retention of outdated data.

There is your missing 80% dark matter.
I though it was about posting dubious articles on facebook.
So, if we're 500,000 light years across does that mean that the Large Magellanic Cloud "Dwarf Galaxies",
only 158,000 light years away, are no longer "galaxies" but instead internal star clusters / halo objects?
Oooh, what a brilliant question! 👏 I do hope Anton or some other expert present an answer. 👍
You could count it as part of the milky way
@@Ajl03 , Definitely So ... as they will be well within the Milky Way's halo. It will also be the only known galaxy containing smaller galaxies _ making it/us special. Lol!
I feel like this is like the Earth's atmosphere thing, like yeah, it's technically "part" of the system, but barely, and it can easily change.
@@thomspoody9887 I suspect that is the case with IC 1101 the largest galaxy ever. It probablycontains a galaxy as its centre of mass instead of a black hole.

This is why they don't let Anton use the real creation matrix.

In wonder if there are people living in andromeda basking in the glory of the milky way, teaching their children about the day andromeda gets eaten by it.
I like to think of it more as a partnership.
I think the Aliens in Andromeda are planning to take over the Milky way, we have no chance.

It would be super boring. Everything is so big and we are so small that you'd never get the same perspective that you see on screen and in print.
Humans: Based on our calculations 85% of the universe's mass is in the form of dark matter.
Also humans: We didn't know how big our own galaxy was.
Seeing the forest from the trees, if you will. Just hard to be 100% about the size of it all when we're in the middle of it (figuratively speaking).
@Carlos Saraiva You know what's more of a shame? Having to explain an obvious joke to a pretentious nincompoop

Our galaxy is not even close to as large as the enterprise that will be created by the birth of the Anton 'Space Out' T-shirt release.
Good video, always fun to learn new things. I was aware of the halo, but had no idea it was that large.
So our galaxy has it's own ort cloud.

I don’t know how more people don’t find this sort of thing more interesting. I’m just a layperson and not even a student of this, but I find it immensely fascinating. Your prior article regarding Tidal Stripping may apply to globular clusters in Milky Way's halo. How much mass isn't missing anymore?
This was my question as well. How much missing mass do these halos account for.
I, too, was thinking how much "dark matter" this accounts for... 🤔
I think we need a better definition of what a "galaxy" is.
Exactly
Awesome channel, dude :)
Very exciting find! This is important information to have!
Hey Anton!

amazing video of space its good to learn thank you for that cool video of space you are very smart
Amazing video, Anton! Thanks!
This is really amazing. I love to hear the stuff that talks about hey we were wrong, it's actually this. Just shows we will never know the true mysteries of the universe.
That's the issue people have with science, they view everything as 'right or wrong'. Wrong is saying someone is ignorant. Its more like we use the best instruments we have at the time to come up with the most likely answer. As technology develops new information will come with it, making old information obsolete, not wrong!
This is true for everything except the field of medicine. One day your a leading psych doc performing bleeding edge neurological procedures, the next you’re a “monster” who lobotomized a bunch of innocent people.
you picked a good topic to specialize in. new discoveries almost every day! or a conspiracy to print new college text books lol
love your videos dude, and digging the light change too, either you've moved it back or aimed it at the ceiling as i noticed you were getting a bit of light bleaching on your face from the past few videos, or maybe im talking shite, jury's out, lol.

keep up the good work dude and i wish you big success in the near future and beyond!
Awesome video, thanks!
I love your accent! And you’re cute 😊 but the best part is you are so knowledgeable about space!
so now how long before halos of Andromeda & Milky Way start colliding?
if Milky Way has more mass, do we rethink Andromeda being destroyer
into Andromeda being destroyed?!
Nothing will destroy anything. The only things certain to actually merge will be the supermassive black holes. 99.9999999999999999999999999 + percent of the stars and planets will barely notice a thing.
Great video thanks for the info

How does this affect the dark matter number?
That’s what I was thinking.
Shoosh... You CAN'T bring that up mate!
Some muppets are still writing their thesis on magical dark matter.
Andrew Manche I’m inclined to agree, they’ve spent a fortune and a decade looking for it, and have failed to find it. I’d say there’s a far greater chance their math is off, rather than 80% of the universe is missing.
gotta love how ever expanding space is
Really appreciate the work Anton puts into these videos everyday. I respect his dedication and look forward to watching his next video every day.
True_ Storey hers an egg 🥚
Does this mean that the milky way and andromeda will come together sooner than expected?
Possibly
I'd say Tuesday
masterxyr My body is ready!
no...
Tuesday's no good for me, that's my drinking day. If the galaxies collide, I might spill a little. Let's make it Wednesday.
why do we keep calculating the size of things in an ever expanding void
So I can tell my grandkids how big the Galaxy was in my day and we liked it.
Know thyself?
To add a little to that, we will never stop making new discoveries due to the fact that the universe is expanding faster than the rate at which more powerful and bigger telescopes are built.
Just thinking about how big the Milky Way is blows my mind. Think of all the places it contains. Polaris. Sagittarius A*. Boyajian’s Star. Proxima Centauri. The Pleiades. Kepler 22-B. Your childhood home. V726 Cas. The galactic halo.
It’s so vast, so enormous, and yet so personal. We call it home, and our species has spent its entire existence here (and probably will never leave it). Let’s discover all we can about it.
Fantastic! Really interesting!!! 😃
EVE and Elite Dangerous will have a fun time trying to fix their entire game now lmao
Well in the case of Elite at least(I don't play EVE) actual occupied space is such a tiny little dot on the galactic map I almost feel like its a waste because there is no way even in centuries the player base could possibly explore and inhabit every star. That means our system is extremely close to the galactic center, and very exposed to various extension events like gamma ray burst, proximity to supernovae etc.
Would that mean that life (and maybe civilization) is more likely to have developed, and survived, in the surrounding older globular clusters than in our galactic downtown" crowded environment?
Probably. Less stuff to collide into each other.

Peasant ever heard the word sarcasm?
@@stijnblockx8648 I don't think you understand how sarcasm works because that was not it.
Why are galaxies shaped like discs and not like spheres? I always wondered this. It seems like they should be shaped like spheres.
It's because of the gas that was there when the galaxy formed. Gases will collide and those collisions can transfer different kinds of energy out of the galaxy. But angular momentum tends to be conserved. This angular momentum will cause a disk to form. Then stars will form and planets will form around those in a similar fashion from the star's disk of gas. Dark matter tends to stay around the galaxy in a spherical shape because they can't collide. So the galaxy's halo tends to be spherical. Don't know if all that is exactly right, but should give you the gist of it. Now as to why some galaxies are disks and some are spherical, that's a whole other story.
Makes it more and more amazing every year, when we learn more and more, what it has actually taken, for us, for planet earth to be here today....whoa
