its not like what we knew before is wrong, it just isn't as accurate as what we know now. If our galaxy has two black holes, whose electromagnetic poles are flipped, then it would explain the shapes opposing each other, as Tesla pointed out, one pole is stronger than the other. So the flux would pull up material at the edges, the strongest pole pulling more material would cause these opposing ripples.

At about 2:14 the term you were searching for is *“standard candle,”* i.e., an “astronomical object that has a known absolute magnitude, … extremely important to astronomers since by measuring the apparent magnitude of the object we can determine its distance.”
By the way, while I understand what a standard candle is the reason for its usefulness, I honestly don’t understand how that allows distance to be determined. That would be a topic I would appreciate seeing covered and explained *very slowly and carefully.*

The difficulty in the interpretation of Cepheid data in the galactic plane is the extinction due to galactic dust. This affects the observation of distant stars more than nearby ones, so it is very important to adequately correct for it when making a 3D map. The cited paper goes into this, and I would have appreciated your take on the quality and credibility of this particular part of the analysis.

Hey Anton, if you're still getting that little blip of color in the corner of your face cam, and you are using OBS to record, you can create a custom image mask (in filters) that will make that area always transparent. Not that it bothers me or anything. ;-) (Other recording software like xsplit probably has the same type of filter.)

Fascinating as always. Thank you. Is it possible that dark matter or gravitational waves warp/bend the galaxy? Is it possible that the sides, (per the illustration), oscillate in their up down-bends, i.e. as one side rotates to the other that the curves will switch the directions they bend in?

It also means our Galaxy's plain is both thicker and thinner in spots. Like for example for a long time it was thought that our solar system was in a part that was roughly 1000 light years give or take thick but this new discovery shows our location to only be roughly around 500 light years thick.

I also find myself dissatisfied with the lack of an eagle eye’s map showing our sun’s position relative to the approximate direction of the two folds. So many questions! :-)

It sorta looks like the way a LP record or a CD would flutter if spun to fast. Could it be caused by the Galaxy spin ? A effect by all the stars of different masses as they orbit with or by each other?

" Ogle." Love it. If star formation happens in bursts within the galaxy, and if that galaxy is spiralling IN, then either the central black hole is varying in gravity, or the amount of food coming into the rim is varying. Or something else that I haven't thought of. If the galaxy is spiralling OUT, then either the central black hole is varying in how much stuff it is pushing out, exuding, or " humidity " at the rim is varying, allowing the stars at the rim to evaporate faster/slower. Or something else that I haven't thought of. Feel free to rip this apart or add to it.

    • @MikeKayK

Could be part of it, though the mass of the galaxy is many orders of magnitude more than the mass of the stellar streams, so they probably only have a small impact on the galaxy.

It's strange for me to see this, because here in Australia where I see the Milky Way clearly away from cities with my naked eye, I always thought that it wooped 'down' at one end and 'up' at the other end just like in this vid anyway.
So none of this surprises me, even though I know that we probably couldn't perceive the galaxy's real shape from within it just by looking at the sky.

How's this for a theory: Looking at 3:34, relative to our Sun, the far right side of the galaxy is about 90,000 light years way.
Which means that what we see now on that side of the Galaxy happened 90,000 years ago.
Is it possible that during this 90,000 years, the Galaxy could actually still be flat/flatter but is rotating laterally?

  • @gabrielm.942

Ok so theory what if stars form near the core of a galaxy and as the galaxy spins it gradually throws them out of the galaxy or they are destroyed by the that they would be tossed out as new stars are born near the core?
