I can't ever recall anybody claiming the Milky Way was flat.
Looks like a wave to me. Waves are still lines, but curved. Lines are flat.

Very upsetting to find myself confined to a warped galaxy. I want to relocate to Andromeda.
You can't escape the Milky Way since it is expected to collide with Andromeda...
Andromeda is warped too

So far, we've learned that the mass of the Andromeda galaxy was wrong, then that the mass of the Milky Way galaxy was wrong, now that the shape of the Milky Way galaxy was wrong, ...
Everything that we believe is right ... is actually wrong.
Finally, people are starting to catch on.
Well yes but no
@@muneebiqbal5584 -- It's interesting that almost daily old phyla are eliminated and new phyla are created. Almost daily species are moved from one genus, or family, or order, ... to another. And bacterial can transfer genes from one species to another ("horizontal gene transfer"), which makes the division of bacteria into species almost arbitrary.
I mean can anyone really get accurate information about our solar system?
its not like what we knew before is wrong, it just isn't as accurate as what we know now. Even the measurements they're building this on are only accurate to +/-5% so the things we infer from these measurements will be updated again when more accurate measurements and methods are available in the future.
Everytime our understanding of the milky way changes i just think about how elite dangerous has to change their game xD

Good question... hadn't thought about that before🤔

Very interesting.
We'll never know
The sun is in a stable orbit around the galactic core, it was most likely formed in the milky way.
Now we just need Polish Scientists to creat a 3D map of our own planet to confirm it's not flat...
First they need to create a 3-d map of the galaxy. This is a 2-d slice.

Our galaxy looks like a carnival ride.
It's basically a Tilt-A-Whirl, but it takes a few million years to complete a rotation.
The bit about the stars forming in clumps of ages is very interesting, seems like large numbers of these stars could be formed from a small number of events.
say, a massive chain reaction of supernovae forming enormous numbers of stars or something similar.

POLSKAAAAAAA! =) greetings from Poland Anton! =)
Great vid! I'd like to see more on solar maximum and solar minimum, especially the grand solar minimum that we just entered. A guy at work is all doom and gloom, saying things like all power will be lost, Michigan will be covered by a glacier lost in 30 years. He's scaring everyone. He references Valentina Zarkovia work.
If our galaxy has two black holes, whose electromagnetic poles are flipped, then it would explain the shapes opposing each other, as Tesla pointed out, one pole is stronger than the other. So the flux would pull up material at the edges, the strongest pole pulling more material would cause these opposing ripples.
Thank you, Professor Anton
awesome thanks anton
Thank you for the video wonderful person :3
At about 2:14 the term you were searching for is *“standard candle,”* i.e., an “astronomical object that has a known absolute magnitude, … extremely important to astronomers since by measuring the apparent magnitude of the object we can determine its distance.”
By the way, while I understand what a standard candle is the reason for its usefulness, I honestly don’t understand how that allows distance to be determined. That would be a topic I would appreciate seeing covered and explained *very slowly and carefully.*
Anton would be a perfect galactic tour guide. Once space travel is commercial of course
Good lecture, professor. Thanks. For some reason it seems fitting to me that our galaxy is warped.
I've kinda figured this was the case all along, but it's cool that there's evidence to prove it now!
Amazing!
The difficulty in the interpretation of Cepheid data in the galactic plane is the extinction due to galactic dust. This affects the observation of distant stars more than nearby ones, so it is very important to adequately correct for it when making a 3D map. The cited paper goes into this, and I would have appreciated your take on the quality and credibility of this particular part of the analysis.
Anton, my good sir, have you ever played No Man's Sky? Good video, as always. Cheers from México.
Hey Anton, if you're still getting that little blip of color in the corner of your face cam, and you are using OBS to record, you can create a custom image mask (in filters) that will make that area always transparent. Not that it bothers me or anything. ;-) (Other recording software like xsplit probably has the same type of filter.)
I remember there being a widely accepted theory that our galaxy was some form of a galaxy collision... which would explain the flair tails
You might have mentioned Henrietta Swan Leavitt, the lady who discovered the Cepheid variables ;-)
Yeah I saw that study. I thought it was cool. Short, but cool.
We can use stars like that as well as pulsars as lighthouses in space for space travel.
Fascinating as always. Thank you. Is it possible that dark matter or gravitational waves warp/bend the galaxy? Is it possible that the sides, (per the illustration), oscillate in their up down-bends, i.e. as one side rotates to the other that the curves will switch the directions they bend in?
Thats Very Right !
It also means our Galaxy's plain is both thicker and thinner in spots. Like for example for a long time it was thought that our solar system was in a part that was roughly 1000 light years give or take thick but this new discovery shows our location to only be roughly around 500 light years thick.
The rocket equation it's a beautiful thing.
Meet your new instructor.

Thanks Anton! Another very interesting and important video. The astronomy textbook editors are going to make a lot of money selling updated books! Poor students! Your friend, Kim.
Thank you Anton, thank you for everything. I am Aleks and thank you Anton. : )
Hi Anton, what’s the meaning of your “what da math” intro? I’ve always wondered why it’s your intro.
That looks like warped space in front and back of our Galaxy - like Alcubierre representation for FTL. Maybe our Galaxy generates its own bubble.
Some of those diagrams in the research paper looks like that too.
Thanks for keeping us current... you may be the astronomy voice for a new generation... Stellar streams... you get there from another galaxy supercluster by sailing the cosmic filament currents... 7:08 "RR Lyrae" stars...
The bending of the galaxy arms seem to me to be the result of a slow flip or oscillation.
This seems like big news and discovery.
Fascinating
2m15s: "... we call them, distance candles." - Actually, the term is "standard candles."
Sorry to do this, but I'm messing up your nice number of likes (2019) by adding one more. Oh well. It now reads as next year instead of this year...
Fred
Shut up fred
@@norgepalm7315 Now moot anyway. Current year won't match these likes for another 21 centuries.
Fred
Electro-magnetic galactic circuit creates a torus or bend in the galaxy. Pretty cool “sciencey” stuff
So basically the Polish scientist maps out what looks like the biggest pierogi in the universe
Thank you Anton, PEACE dear Sir.
Yay for standard candles. I wonder how many of these cepheid variables are far enough out from the galactic center to provide the approximate curve. I also find myself dissatisfied with the lack of an eagle eye’s map showing our sun’s position relative to the approximate direction of the two folds. So many questions! :-)
The Milky Way matches my sense of humor! Cool!
It sorta looks like the way a LP record or a CD would flutter if spun to fast. Could it be caused by the Galaxy spin ? A effect by all the stars of different masses as they orbit with or by each other?
" Ogle." Love it. If star formation happens in bursts within the galaxy, and if that galaxy is spiralling IN, then either the central black hole is varying in gravity, or the amount of food coming into the rim is varying. Or something else that I haven't thought of. If the galaxy is spiralling OUT, then either the central black hole is varying in how much stuff it is pushing out, exuding, or " humidity " at the rim is varying, allowing the stars at the rim to evaporate faster/slower. Or something else that I haven't thought of. Feel free to rip this apart or add to it.
You had me at "Polish scientists".
why?
@@Aengrod
Becauseee they're the best!
@@alsillman7049 are they? why?
@@Aengrod bcoz it's my opinion. I have my own reasons ;)
Could it be that the stellar streams are pulling at the edges of the galaxy causing them to warp as they orbit through ?
Could be part of it, though the mass of the galaxy is many orders of magnitude more than the mass of the stellar streams, so they probably only have a small impact on the galaxy.
"to ogle" (rhymes with "mogul") means "to look [at something or someone]"
The milky way is an irregular galaxy, it is in the process of eating the Magellanic clouds which were once a separate galaxy that collided with the milky way.
But virtually every single star in the sky is at a different direction and distance than what we see, so I'm looking forward to THAT map
it's still basically flat, it just has a little wiggle in it, it like when you stirred your coffie too fast, it settles down, just wait for andromeda to smack the milky way, that'll really stir it up
You could put ‘experiment’ at the end of any scientific device. . . You could put ‘experiment’ at the end of a rocket that was 20 years old. .and it would sound up to date and exciting
It's strange for me to see this, because here in Australia where I see the Milky Way clearly away from cities with my naked eye, I always thought that it wooped 'down' at one end and 'up' at the other end just like in this vid anyway.
So none of this surprises me, even though I know that we probably couldn't perceive the galaxy's real shape from within it just by looking at the sky.
Noticing a similarity in gross shape with recent warp fold representations....
Earth is not flat, Milky Way not flat
Dr. Becky did a good video on this, as well. Nice video, Anton!
How's this for a theory: Looking at 3:34, relative to our Sun, the far right side of the galaxy is about 90,000 light years way.
Which means that what we see now on that side of the Galaxy happened 90,000 years ago.
Is it possible that during this 90,000 years, the Galaxy could actually still be flat/flatter but is rotating laterally?
Ok so theory what if stars form near the core of a galaxy and as the galaxy spins it gradually throws them out of the galaxy or they are destroyed by the that they would be tossed out as new stars are born near the core?
