We all see BW with all of these styles but know we're not allowed to ask BW about it in real life, so it makes sense that people are curious and seek answers online. Out of the handful of BW I work with most wear unflattering wigs and I wanted to know why they chose those styles over their real hair. This video gave a clear answer.

I wear wigs due to my thyroid condition which had led to brittleness and thinning and missing in places. My head shape doesn't support going bald nor would i feel comfortable. Wearing wigs allows me to be confident. Plus there are wigs now mimicking our texture. My point, there are a myriad of reasons women wear wigs and not necessarily due to colonialism

To each their own, but I find it unfortunate that so many of our women reject their natural hair for false hair. It looks unnatural, and I find it unattractive. Many women are now coupling it with false eyelashes. If I were a single man, these falsified looks would significantly reduce my dating pool because I would find it difficult to date a woman who feels the need to alter her appearance for cosmetic reasons. So long as we don't use chemicals to permanently alter the patterns, we can change from week to week, even day to day. I love and embrace all the possibilities of my miraculous hair. As a white 53 yr old white woman I think black women have beautiful hair. I love seeing all the different styles they come up with. If you have medical issues wear a wig if you choose and that makes you feel good about yourself. Society needs to change perception of women having to be one way or the other and because you look a certain way you are looked at as less. It is absolutely a choice to wear your hair how you want, but isn't it nice that the choice to switch up your styles is because you enjoy the various looks, and not because you hate your natural hair? Imagine never wearing your natural hair out because you genuinely hate it. Or constantly risking chemical burns, or traction alopecia, or breakage, or triggering psoriasis because of relaxers and perms and other treatments. That's the reality for a lot of Black women, unfortunately. When I simply cornrow and moisturize my hair regularly, it thrives under the wigs. Why do people assume the worst or self hate?!?!?!??? I LOVE MY HAIR! I honestly believe that many of the problems that black woman have faced with their hair is caused more by advertising and other forms of social coercion, just like so many white woman feel pressured to have long, blond hair. She may want to switch up her look with different textures, defined cuts and eye catching colors with highlights. I have dry, dull, very difficult to manage 4C hair. I have to use a relaxer just to make it manageable. Or it would quickly become flat and matted. Just to maintain an afro in it's natural state is a JOB, very exhausting and stressful and even depressing at times. And because of my round face and round head, I looked really good in my afro but it's waaaaaaaaay too much work and painful. It hurts to pick through my hair to fluff it through out the day. I dilute my relaxer cream with conditioner so it doesn't strip all my texture, so I 'texlax" basically.
Me and my oldest daughter have similar 4C hair, only her scalp is very sensitive and her hair breaks very easily. Her hair breaks even when it's braided.
My youngest daughters hair is a looser texture but it's sooooooooo tangly and very stressful to detangle her hair even with my FINGERS. Plus she's tender-headed and hates when I have to detangle her hair. And with all the detangling, her hair got so thin in the bottom 4 to 5 inches of her hair. When you have detangle that often, and with the type of hair she has, it breaks the hairs no matter how gentle you are. She falls asleep with me doing her hair, she gets tired and wants to lay down. So do I. Lol.
Our hair is so much work, it's a nightmare. Im glad I only had 2 girls and a boy. I rather spend that time doing other things besides our hair. There is more to life than HAIR. I already have so much stuff to do being a mother and a wife. Like, it's just ridiculous!
When I just had my 1st daughter I had more time to deal with it, but it was STILL and ALWAYS will be a hassle. After I had my 2nd child, I relaxed my hair. And I don't feel bad about it at all. I am grateful for the chemicals that help make it more manageable and make our lives a little easier.

My hair is 4C kinky and gorgeous when I wear it out and style it. My real hair looks like a wig. However, 4C hair is overly curly or extra coily and the challenge is getting our hair not to break at the tips which is very common for 4C hair MORE than any other hair texture in the world! Yes some black women take advantage and hide behind the weaves but not all of us. The protective styles really do grow our hair because our ends are covered up. And yes they’re are sooooo many beautiful unique styles that many other hair textures can’t even wear.. so yes we do represent with our protective styles! Educate yourselves.

A lot of black women wear their natural hair but it’s a lot of black women who depend on wigs and weave and never wear their natural hair longer than two weeks. These are also said women who can’t go without nails and lashes. It’s about what’s trending a lot of women are followers to each other. Hence why soooooo many women look like copy n paste, social media has a play in it as well. I liked being able to do braids myself on my head but even I had to cut the crap and force myself to wear my hair out, tired of trying to cover it up. Years later and a failed set of locs from box dyes I now have two day old micro locs. And before I loc it I wore weave to comeback from having to chop my hair off. Despite having to cut my hair I was depending on that weave to look acceptable and decent, even though I know I’m still cute with or without it, I just feel more acceptable. And within knowing that I cut out two week old braids and force myself to start a microloc journey because I won’t depend on weave. Plus I’m tired of doing my hair and I’m def not about to pay anyone and I’m tired of paying for the weave. If all the black women stop buying weave a lot of businesses would go out bankrupt

They do it because they look beautiful many different ways and they are extremely talented with hairstyling. No one had a problem with the old tired wigs from back in the day when untalented people were making them. Black women took wig making to another level and they are creating styles that blows people's minds. If other people had their abilities, everyone would be talking about how brillant they are and they would become filthy rich. Vidal Sassoon & Paul Mitchell were innovators and look what it did for them. I bet when black women stop creating fantastic wigs, a corporate company is going to take their ideas global and make a ton money.

Silk press in my area $80-100, braids $100-300, relaxers $40-120 etc. The average yearly salary for black women is $40k. Couple that with current beauty trends and fashion, you can purchase synthetic wigs to match each outfit. Why damage your hair, or cut it when you can purchase a wig, wear it for a second and toss it for less than $50.
There are some who do practice self hate, but there are many others who don’t. You can wear a pixie cut without cutting your locs or wear an Afro instead of a knit cap during winter.
I’m old school and I’ve worn my natural hair and wigs and wigs that look like natural hair. I’ve worn my hair long straight, kinky straight, fried, dyed, and laid to the side. LET’S BE CAREFUL. One should never presume that a woman of non-European phenotype is intentionally “hiding” her natural hair because she is wearing a colorful head wrap, wig or braids. It is more likely that she has simply chosen to protect her beautiful strands from unnecessary manipulation or harmful friction encountered when her long textured strands rub against a wool scarf or as they fall below her shoulder blades and across her back against a heavy knit sweater during cold Winter months. We don’t “hide” our textured hair. WE QUITE PURPOSELY AND INTENTIONALLY CHOOSE TO ROCK OUR LOOK USING ANY ONE OF THE MANY ATTRACTIVE OPTIONS AVAILABLE TO NATURAL, TEXTURED HAIR…..BECAUSE WE CAN. One would be wise not to make assumptions involving “hiding” or any other form of self-shame when it comes to how someone is rocking their natural hair.

The only people policing the way we wear our hair is us. If a wig is nicely done they, including our men, don’t notice. It’s more of a total package or aesthetic/attraction for some men.
On a side note, I saw some of the most beautiful wigs styled for young girls and prom. I predict more mermaid hair. Can’t wait!
I’m old school, I wore my Afro back when Angela Davis was young. We wore our hair as a statement but still no one criticized women for wearing their hair straight or wigs back then.

I wore my natural hair for three years, before using certain products to make my hair pattern become more loose. My treatment overall got better than it was, when I had my 100% natural hair, only using creams and styling it.

It’s just another form of ‘deception.’ To deceive men. Just because it’s a pattern and custom doesn’t necessarily make it right. If a woman feels the need to wear a wig then that demonstrates a sense of insecurity, a lowered sense of personal value and self worth. Then there lies the question if a woman feels the need to deceive the man then what else does she have to hide? A woman should be comfortable just as she is, comfortable within herself first. I am glad to see more and more men taking this route, especially younger men in some parts of Africa, wherevI am from, figting the stigma attached to dreadlocks. Whether they are just jumping on a trend or not, it's a great force of representation. It doesn't seem to be catching on with black women the same way, and you have done a great job explaining some of the reasons.

there are different standards for women's hair in the workforce. Most jobs will not hire women with poorly managed locs.

They wear wigs because of convenience. Or they may want to wear a different look.

An enslaved/colonized mind emulates the appearance or behavior of the enslaver/colonizer and justifies it any way they can.

We do not hide our hair. We are proud to be who we are,
Its just possibilities and we are just free to do what we want
Thats how society sees us, I am proud to be black, and I
Enjoy possibilities and choices, I can wear a wig, I can use my Natural
Hair, I can wrap my head when I want to , I can shave my head, it’s
My head and I celebrate who I am, I love me, and I always will, because
I am unique, I am a masterpiece and it’s only one of me, HELLO ❤

This will go over a lot of people’s heads… but I’m a black woman myself with natural hair and I get why some of us prefer to wear wigs. However, I do wonder why we wear wigs that is anything unlike our natural hair texture and say “oh it’s to be versatile”. Why does wearing straight wigs equate to versality. Because deep down, we find straight hair or hair with looser hair pattern easier to manage than our own hair. Some may say “I want to wear a wig so my hair can grow”. But the question is, why must you feel the need to cover your hair provided you don’t have any visible hair issues. We are the only race in this entire world with different hair. Nobody grows hair like us. We are unique. Our hair was meant to be different. Our hair is versatile by our own standard. We don’t have to wear straight wigs to be versatile but for some reason we want to be like everyone else. Again, I get why we wear wigs because it’s easier to manage. It’s only easier to manage because we refuse to let our hair be. We don’t allow our hair to be what it is because we have a clear imagine of what we want our hair to look like. And so, rather than embracing it we mould it to fit the image we have in our head. This action unfortunately has caused many black sisters to damage their hair to
the point they are now forced to wear wigs. Then you have some people who have beautiful hair but still want to wear wigs all the time.. like wear frontal wigs and glue a whole wig on their scalp
in the name of “versatility”. Why? It’s because of a look/image they have in their minds they want to attain.
If we took the time to learn what our hair likes and appreciate it for what it is, we would never say “it’s hard to manage”. Our hair is just different, unique and misunderstood. Black hair is one of the most beautiful hair yet one of the most misunderstood hair.

I opt for braids and twists because I'm active and pragmatic with little interest in hair and makeup. I appreciate the convenience of waking up with my hair styled for weeks, requiring no effort from me. My choice isn't about self-hatred or conforming; rather, it's challenging the taboo against women who aren't interested in learning hairstyling or makeup. I even shaved my head once to avoid hair maintenance, and I loved it. So, if anyone thought these choices meant self hatred or conforming to Eurocentric beauty standards…yeah that’s not a thing haha

I'm the same as you. I keep my hair braided and I love it that way! I also hate doing hair- I have far more important things to do than to spend a whole hour styling my hair everyday.

    Its def self hate
Because if we were the world beauty standard, then we would be proud to wear our natural hair,
Our Ancestors would be so sad to see how much our people treat each other so negatively and help the racist agenda that we are somehow not good enough unless we mimic feature that are non black

Honestly black women dont like they're natural hair, and many black women associate they're hair with pain and trauma because it's was combed roughly told it's not beautiful. And it also takes effort to grow the hair long so it's easier to wear wigs and weaves to achieve the look they want

Why there isn’t a video of why so many white women dye their hair. (And they wear weaves also)

    • @djlivvy46

Because they're dyeing their own hair, not someone else's. And there is no way that ww chemically alter the texture of their hair or wear fake hair to the extent that black women do.
Apparently there are 12 year old black girls already wearing full wigs in New York.
