      Agreed. I have gone up too many hills where it just didn't have the power and leaves you in a tight spot getting down. I still love the comfortable ride and the way it sways on the road though.
      It sounds like they raised the price recently as I thought it was around 4000. 4600 is too much, it is too close to other more capable bikes. A year old WR250R for instance. Thought they are not quite the same.
      One problem though is that if they redesign it, I believe they have new emissions requirements that add power robbing equipment, weight and cost. We are stuck with this design because of it.

      I saw this again and got to thinking about the 4 gallons and the brakes. It gets about 80mpg, and if I recall correctly has a 1.2 gallon tank. So safely about 100miles per tank. I could see squeezing in 2 to 2.5 gallons, but more than that would be huge in that space. The result is a long ride off road, or even on, on a bike of this size. I am guessing that carrying that extra 25lbs wouldn't be desirable most of the time either. So I think it is probably better to carry it some other way for a long trip so it doesn't adversely affect the rest of the time.
      On the brakes, the general sentiment is that disk is better, but honestly I have the older design with drum front and back, and they have been maintenance free for 12K miles of off road use. They are protected from damage and don't wear out as fast. Yes disk can stop the wheel easier, but the drums lock up the wheel fine too. So not sure I would want, particularly the back, to be disk. I would guess the back is only half worn on mine and still has a long life.

    Matt, great video as always man!, keep up the quality work & very well done. The only thing I may add is the XT has a low fuel light indicator when you are low on fuel. I like the TW 200 still as you just reach down and flip the petcock to reserve and you are still good to go..... all in all, will come to lifestyle requirements and motorcycle preference, both are great motorcycles... But I have to say... I agree, there is nothing out there that comes close to the " smiles per miles ", the TW 200 is in a class of it's own

      Fred, I’ve been in the exact same debate and cannot figure out which one to get. I love the bigger tires on the TW, but like some of the other upgrades on the XT. How did you decide between the 3?

    • @Joshua_Bruce
      @Joshua_Bruce 3 роки тому +4

      @@jennaehoving1621 I researched the 3 of them to death. I like the looks of the TW and it seems to fit my riding style / area. Forestry roads, some light / medium trails, and 45-55 mph roads in Pennsylvania. Decades of production and low tech means less to break and easier / cheaper repairs. Also, I sat on the DR200 and the XT. They look and feel more like dirt bikes, real skinny tires and narrow seat. I couldn't find a TW200 anywhere. Even when I was on vacation in Tenn the dealerships were sold out. Kentucky and West Virginia same story. So I figured I would preorder one once I got back to PA so at least I could sit on one. If I didn't like it I would buy the XT. When got back, I went to the Yamaha dealership in Altoona. I had to wait for the salesman / manager to get there. While waiting two of the mechanics came out and both were TW fans. All this plus the fact that TWs sell out instantly while DRs and XTs can be found tells me the TW is something special. BTW mine was supposed to be in last week it wasn't. I called the dealership and they ensured me it will be in this week. From what I have found each dealership gets 2 every 2 or 3 months. So April or June may be the earliest.

    Great video! My wife and I debated on this quite awhile on which bike to get for her. We ended up with the XT, and that thing is an absolute pleasure to ride. As always, every bike like this needs a 6th gear to better allow re-gearing. But I've still ridden the XT in some fairly challenging single track, you just never get out of first gear. For light commuting (no highway) I absolutely love putting around on the XT. The fueling is, well, exquisite. Zero gaps or lags in the rev range. And the bike is just so amazingly approachable. I don't understand why these aren't the bikes of choice for motorcycle training courses.
    I really really wanted to choose the TW. It's just so damned neat. Plus it's a very kindred spirit with my Yamaha Big Bear atv--dead simple, end-of-the-world reliable, almost comically capable of climbing. I ended up letting logic win out--fuel injection is a winner. And tire selection is an absolutely important thing on a dual-sport. Finally--I wanted to be able to strap this bike to the back of my motorhome. The XT fits a carrier much better, doesn't require custom wheel chocks, and handles the elevation changes. I absolutely don't understand why most motorcycle salesmen tend to push people away from the XT--I'm a big cheerleader for them. Of course I wish it was 300cc in the same size bike. And that there was a 6th gear. But I really hope that when Yamaha decides to make this into a smaller Tenere, they don't add 4" of suspension travel and 80 lbs. That's not what this bike is.

    • @MOBStreet83
      @MOBStreet83  3 роки тому +6

      Thanks for taking the time to watch! I really appreciate your insight on the XT. I was pretty impressed with what I saw spec wise and I seriously couldn't figure out why they had two of them just sitting there. I went in two weeks later to pick up my new TW and was happy to see that one was gone and the other had a sold tag on the handlebars. I had a friend of mine ask me why I didn't get the XT over the TW (he is a Yamaha Technician) and he told me the benefits of the XT. The TW's simplicity, durability, proven track record and let's admit it, cool looks, are the reason I bought Two TW's and will have them forever. But, if I had the money, I would buy an XT as well. Thanks again for taking the time to comment! Here's to many more happy miles ahead!

    Thanks for a great introduction to the new XT250, Matt. I trust the Yamaha brand any time, anywhere, so on the subject of which one to get I'd say both. The TW200 is and always will be better in loose soil and sand, it's a given thanks to its fat tires. The XT250 would perform much better on the open range and on harder soil, it should also feel more nimble in rocky areas and when moving or dodging sideways. Its slimmer tires allow for higher speeds and better stability at higher speeds, also the fact it has a larger motor makes travel more pleasant. So which one you want for the day, well, that depends on the day.

    Tdub for life!
    I was able to secure some time at my local university's math laboratory and proposed this question to them: "What is it about the Yamaha TW200 that's sooooo desirable?" After about 3 days of analysis with the available data given to them they then sent it to their department of anthropology. After 2 days that department then sent it to their engineering department. 3 days later engineering sent the data to the history building. History spent only 1 day before sending it off to athletics. 5 days later athletics sent it back to the math lab where my original contact who let me in gave me the final scientifically concluded verdict of why the Tdub is desirable. Ready? Here's what they determined: IT'S MORE FUN TO GO FAST ON A SLOW BIKE THAN SLOW ON A FAST BIKE.😉

    Big fan of both the xt and the tw. One thing I wanted to point out. If you’re coming from smaller displacement dirt bikes. I road a yz125 for many years for example, neither one of these bikes have as much hp or torque as the yz125. So you definitely don’t need to worry about going from a 2 stroke 125cc dirt bike to a 4 stroke 200 or 250cc dual sport. Dirt bike engines are very high strung for performance. Dual sport engines are designed to last a long time.

    Wayyyyyyy back in the very early 80s we had 2 x TW200s they were used as irrigation bikes. There was a time when land would be levelled for flood irrigation to work. It was incredibly expensive, but worth it then. It’s inconceivable now. We had to monitor that and set the dams for each section of the field to get flooded. Then we also had wheelmove sprinklers. We irrigated about 1200 acres back the. With the wheel moves. Pivots were just getting popular and were very expensive. Now it’s simply the way to go.
    Anyways, you were always in the mud and these bikes are great in the mud. The floatation you get out of the tires helps a lot. We wore bothe those bikes out and then replaced them with 3 wheel Honda ATC 250s. Again, they did well and we replaced everything with pivots before we wore those out. They were bloody dangerous to ride though. Had one of the crew put his foot down and get caught by the wheel. Hit ripped the skin off and left a big flap over his Achilles that started just below the knee joint. His whole calf was wide open. Tore his ACL, dislocated his knee and shoulder as it ripped him right out of the seat,,,,,, ugly. Pulled the motors and made go carts,,,,,, hahaha. Safer??? A little. Before I retired the last machines in this type of use for us were a Honda Pioneer 1000 and a Pioneer 700. Pure luxury in comparison,,,,,,. Yeah,,,,, I’m old, but still want one of these TW 200s again. Currently my bike is a a trike!! Ryker Rally, 900 CC’s. We have so much wind here and it can get over 60 mph, the crosswinds are terrible. With the Ryker, at least I’m not riding leaning 30 degrees into the wind,,,,, and I have 3 quite fat contact patches to help hold the road! Times change, but the TW does not, they got it right the first time!!

    • @MOBStreet83
      @MOBStreet83  3 роки тому +2

      Thanks for taking the time to share that story! I actually had my TW out with me a few weeks ago working on a wheel line! I had to replace 15 wheels! Out here there aren't many pivots, just a couple really. Most still use the wheel lines for watering. I had the Big Red ATC 200 last year and those things have become so popular again. I found it in my wife's grandpa's barn and thought it would be fun to restore.......sold it and bought dirt bikes for the kids instead. You are right though, modern side by sides make it pretty easy to do farm work. We use to flood irrigate at our last home but it was only a 5 acre alfalfa field. I built a Honda Goldwing Trike for my great uncle a few years ago so he could still ride as well. He's 82 and still wanting to go out and ride. Thanks again!

I think it is very approachable and the lower gearing I think helps with getting use to the clutch and the overall feel of the bike. It is very stable and predictable. They are both good though and if you want a few more creature comforts such as electronic dash, dual disc brakes and fuel injection, the XT is a great choice. Either way you can't go wrong.

    I think the XT250 would have been more popular if they kept the 6 speed transmission that the XT225 had. It also gained weight looking at the specs, almost 40 lbs. XT250 291 wet, Xt225 238 dry. Add the 16 lbs for the fuel and it still comes in at 254. I am keeping my XT225 running. When I got the itch for a new bike, I went with a Suzuki DR650. Nothing new in the 250 class bikes had any improvements over the XT225 that I already have. Sure fuel injection is nice, but carbs go for years without problems. The weight gain was my real issue for a trail bike. I want less weight.

    Great comparison of physicals. Yami makes bike for each niche of the market (mostly). TW for low, slow trails where wide tire performance will help. its not a great commuter bike as semi will practically beat you off the line and it tops out at 55 which can be down right scary in some situations (tuning/upgrades help). If you want to run rugged terrain and enjoy the scenery at a slow pace on a comfortable confidence inspiring bike TW is it. XT is a entry level enduro/adventure bike for budget/maintenance conscious riders. it's great for commuting, gravel roads, light trails but to maintain stability on the narrower tires you have to increase speed (for newer riders) which will soak up the suspension quickly so i didn't feel it was as enjoyable on rough terrain. You could definitely have a great all around build that could function for full day or multiday trips for under $7k which is awesome. In the end, its all about fit for purpose and rider preference style. This video was great for helping riders understand the differences between the two bikes.

      Dude I put a rear rack on my 2020 and mounted a tan Pelican 1450 dry box on the back. I carry all my small camping supplies and electronic gear in the box and it stays dry. I put strap my tent and tarps on top of the case, my sleeping bag and bed roll in front of the case, and I keep a waterproof backpack for the rest. That little donkey takes it all in stride and is STILL fun to ride on the trails to the campsite. The XT250 is basically a fuel injected TW with disc brakes and dirt bike tires and I use it more like a quad than a “motorcycle”. If you’re not planning on riding a lot of sand then the TW is probably a better buy but other than that it’s more up to the individual.....I wanted a TW but I think I’m happier with my XT after a year.

    I'd keep my TW-200 since trading out for the XT250 at this point would cost more money that the gains are worth. Since I am 5'10 and weigh 265 lbs, the T-Dub's wide seat makes it more comfortable for longer rides. The fat tires don't make ruts in my yard and grab sand well. I have had more fun on the T-Dub than any other motorcycle I've tried. Riding fast is not as important as just getting there and enjoying the ride as I go, so the slowness of the T-Dub is not an issue. If I need to go across the continent on long distance vacation trips with some off road riding, the BMW R1150GS ADV is the one I ride. Options are nice. The only thing I could say would beat out the T-Dub for trails is a ROKON, but those are ungodly expensive. T-Dubs are reliable and pretty inexpensive for what you get.

    I rented one for a day on Aruba. LOVED IT. I own an FJR1300 at home, so about the total opposite. I loved the sheer fun factor of the fat tires, and the traction was shockingly high on sand, gravel dirt AND ASPHALT. I couldn't believe how confidently I could lean that TW on the roads. I partly want one so my wife and daughter can learn to ride, I partly want one to take it to the Oregon coast sand dunes, and I might even take it to the little cart track here in town! But mostly I just want to ride out of town, find some dirt roads and get lost on one.
    For the entire day, it put a smile on my face. I think I even loved the carburetor more than I would FI. I thought about "do I need more power than this?" I don't think I do. The connection of those tires is really something to experience. Hands down, the HAPPIEST bike I've ever ridden.

      Well, you could say that. But, I will run my TW200 with the CRF300L. These TW's have shown that they are pretty dang reliable since 1987. This video wasn't to say which other bike is better, it was simply to say out of these two machines that only have a $500 difference in price, what do you get for that $500 and is it worth taking that over the TW.

      Well, I think it really boils down to what you want the bike for? Could you be happy with the XT? A lot of folks have said that they wish the TW had a bigger engine, fuel injection, bigger tank, better suspension and so forth and so on. But, I bought the TW knowing exactly what it is and what type of riding I intended with it. By the looks of the other two machines you previously had, you might want whatever is quicker and more powerful. That's just my thought on what I read. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching.

    I have a DR200 and a TW200. I got the DR200 over the XT only because the shop had a practically perfect older DR200 that they wanted to unload and out the door it was less than $2,000. The Tdub was given to me by a good friend who had left it to sit for several years outside, but it was an easy process to restore it. The difference between how the skinny tires ride vs. the fat tires of the Tdub can't really fully be explained. The DR200, like the XT250, basically rides like any other dirtbike, while the Tdub floats up and over stuff. Anytime I want to cruise further and with better suspension, I go with the DR200, but I have way more fun on the Tdub.

      That is too big. The tw is already heavy for it's size, and it would not fit the frame, force changing the geometry. Also that kind of power would cause more jumping and other higher speed activity that would max out the suspension. It just isn't designed for that purpose. A 300 would be enough. It would give a bit higher speed and more power on the hills. It has almost made it up everything I have been willing to try it on.

    • @dylsky100
      @dylsky100 3 роки тому

      Yes me too! Might be a little heavier but as long as it still has a lower seat you should still have good control for tight trails. My dads about to buy a tw and I want to talk him out of it because its going to be a slow bike

    • @court2379
      @court2379 3 роки тому

      @@dylsky100 It isn't a mx or race bike, but it gets you where you are going most of the time. You will struggle with steep hills, particularly if they have loose rocks because you will lose momentum and the TW doesn't have reserve power to make up for it. However it is very comfortable to ride, and generally has better traction. The low height makes for a more natural feeling turn. For someone who hasn't ridden for years and won't be a super aggressive rider its a great bike. Plus even if a year from now he wants something else, the resale on them is excellent.

      Yamaha would gladly do this but government rules and regulations found in various countries around the world regarding emissions and testing make the process time consuming and cost prohibitive regarding return of investment with existing vehicles. It's worse with automobiles and here's a perfect example. GM seriously looked at offering a fuel injected 454 as a high performance upgrade over the 350 in their 1989 Police Package Cheverolet Caprice model. The 454 would come straight out of their existing half ton pickup. To be able to do this following all government rules and regulations meant they would have to emission and crash test at their own expense. Due just a couple thousand vehicles manufactured with this engine at most it would have been a $12,000 option to cover their costs plus add in some profit. Engineers loved it and the bean counters killed it. They built only one prototype.

    Both of these bikes are an excellent value for what you are getting. The TW200 is definitely superior to the XT250 for off road riding because of its lower gears and larger mud and snow tires. However, if you like riding the roads a bit more, then the XT250 would be the superior bike. So the only question is: What will the bike be used for most of the time? It sat in the shed for about 6 years untouched. My bike was sold and gone. I asked him once in a while if i could ride it since he never did and finally he let me. It was a fun ride. He ended up trading it for a boat motor he never got running about 10 years ago. When i go home to visit i still see it riding around.

    tw200 you didn't say how the tw can go very slow in the woods i dont know how the xt does but all the other bike i have tried can not go as slow and smooth

      You're right, I didn't mention that! I actually have a video that shows just how easy it is to "tractor" the Tdub through the woods! Now with the 52t rear sprocket it does it even better!

    Old school here. Function and utility arcs good price point. Don’t care for tech = distractions (watch people glued to their phones)
    Looking at both bikes this gave me the info to make my decision.

      Hey Steven! I'm with you. That is one of my favorite parts about the TW is the simplicity of it all. I have bought two of them now and haven't regretted it once! Thanks for watching and best of luck getting one.

    Best $500 you could spend would be to get the XT-250! Rear disc , fuel injection & 250 motor & it looks like a real bike. 🔥

    I'm a new rider with a short inseam and I'm torn between these two. I want the t dub just for its sheer audacity to exist and be unapologetic about poorly doing everything, any and all things. I want the xt250 because it seems more off-road nimble and road practical. It's like picking a fav between your cousin Nathaniel whose reserved but got his shit together or your cousin Darrell who doesn't give a fk and likes to party

      That is an awesome way to look at it!! 😂😂 The TW is very capable off road and handles really well. This is the video I did on that ua-cam.com/video/mQVnJQqSKY8/v-deo.html I have taken it all over the place. The XT is more road friendly with the gearing and dual disc setup. I don't think you'd regret either, but the TW takes my vote all day long. I am short, 5'6" with a 30" inseam and both of the seat heights on these are great.

    There's one big difference in these though... that XT can't go some of the places the TW will. The super FAT tires make a HUGE difference in deep sand. Take the XT on the beach and it'll bog down and fall over. We ride in a lot of sand here in AZ and most skinny tires just don't work. The whole reason we're getting a pair of dubs is because of the fatties on it!

      I need some more experience in the sand then......cause my time in the sand on the Tdub wasn't the best. 😂😂😂 This is my video of the sand dunes. ua-cam.com/video/h5S0aw17uas/v-deo.html
