    Kevin, Kudos on this little Santa. Although the video is more than 4 years old, it's a great carving to do any time of the year.
    It's videos like yours that has brought me back into carving after a 35 year absence. Please continue to post more carving videos. Although you never say a word, one can follow your cuts and end up with a acceptable likeness of your carving. I very much like your seaman videos too.

    Hello Kevin, saw some of your work at the craft council and it’s awesome. I carve some Santa’s and fishermen myself and just wish I could get them to look as one quarter as good as yours. I just can’t get that happy look on them.

      Len You'll get there with lots of practice. That's pretty much all it takes

      I don’t know Kevin, been carving awhile now and just can’t seem to get that happy look. Going to watch some more of your videos and try and pick up some tips. Thanks for posting these videos.

    My great uncle was a legion around Cleveland county in North Carolina. When they were getting ready to do upgrading on the statute of liberty in the early 80s. He whittled a statue of liberty and donated it so they can auction it off. The guy that use to be over the Crystler Corp bought it. My great uncle was Jay Cook. I didn't knew if you ever heard of him? Your style reminds me of him.

      He must have been a great carver. I never heard off him though. Good accomplishment

      I just finished my first wood spirit. All I had was a box cutter. And it took me for ever. It's not the best thing but I was going to send a picture to see what you think.

    Kevin what a great little carving , as l have not long ago found your channel and would very much like to have ago at chip carving . After a multiple bypass some years back l now find myself in forced retirement at 61 and time on my hand's and we all know what happens with idle hands 😂 . You may have already done a video on what knifes to use , but what do you as a carver recommend that won't break the bank .
    Regards Frankie

      Frankie I use a Flexcut roughing knife most time. I find it good. They are about $25. They have an assortment of knives for whatever your style of carving. All roughly around the same price range.

    Kevin Thanks for this your awesome! quick question why knife are you using brand etc could I use a Buck pocket knife to carve?? thank you!

    • @KevinCoates98
      @KevinCoates98  7 років тому

      Leo Gonzalez the knife is a flex cut roughing knife. I guess a buck knife is fine as long as it’s cutting good. Thanks

    This reminds me much of how I carve Little faces! But I must say, that is an Amazing knife your using. How do you get it so Sharp!
    By the way, English isn't my language, does anyone know what is the differance between Carving and Whittling?

    • @KevinCoates98
      @KevinCoates98  6 років тому

      I use a flat file on the blade once in awhile when need be. Apart from that I hone it on a block of wood or sometimes on the blade of another knife. With carving I guess it could be using any carving tools or power tools. Whittling I assumed is just using a knife. I could be wrong. It wouldn’t be the first time.

    Hello Kevin,
    What is that large knife that you use? It looks like a filet knife ground down on the tip.

    • @KevinCoates98
      @KevinCoates98  7 років тому

      Bob Regan that's what the knife is. I cut 3"-4" of the tip.

    • @KevinCoates98
      @KevinCoates98  7 років тому

      Paddy Pup I use white pine. That’s pretty all that’s available to me here

    • @paddypup1836
      @paddypup1836 7 років тому

      Kevin Coates thanks for the reply. I have loads of offcuts from the shop.
      Some people say it’s hard to use but knot free isn’t bad.
      You ever use bass wood? Although I know it’s the holy grail of carving wood I’ve never used it. Subscribed.

    • @KevinCoates98
      @KevinCoates98  7 років тому +1

      Paddy Pup I had a couple pieces of basswood given to me a while back. It was very hard to carve. The wood looked old and weathered so that could have been the reason. I buy one inch pine boards and laminate it. Well actually it’s 3/4”. That’s all there is available. It’s knotty pine I use. I pick through it and get boards with very few knots. It works well for me

    You never describe what tool you use or the wood or size why not you want people to watch you right????????????????????????

    • @KevinCoates98
      @KevinCoates98  5 років тому +1

      Most videos I just use a knife or two. In some videos when I remember I put in the description the wood. I put videos on here because they may help some people with little carving experience. I do the best I can with the time I have to spare
