    Amazing that you have managed in under half an hour, to transform a simple block of wood into what could become a family heirloom for generations to own and smile at, that my friend is a special gift!

    Fantastic Work! My great-grandfather had a boning knife that i found cleaning out my grandfather's house. My Great-Grandfather was a chef and owned a restaurant in NYC for many many years. The knife was terribly rusted and nasty looking and i didn't know what to do with it. So, stupid me threw it away. I wish i had seen your videos earlier because i would have loved to have been able to resurrect his old boning knife and use it for my carvings. Fortunately i had also found his cleaver and was able to bring it back to life. I rebuilt the wooden handle, cleaned up the massive blade, and sharpened it. I use it almost every day, But i wish i had the foresight to give that old boning knife the same treatment.

    I am fascinated with the level of detail you can get with that big knife. Thanks for sharing.

      Amazing, and most of it with a hunk of steel that barely qualifies as a knife. I spend hundreds of dollars buying knives, I should be ashamed of myself

    Kevin, thanks for the vid. After commenting on you seemingly magical knife a few vids ago, I went back and honed and stropped mine more. Big improvement. I have to learn the carver's definition of "sharp enough to carve with". My next project went better. I know that I need to practice, practice, practice; and to improve my hand strength and fine motor skills. But I still can't rough out a carving as you and the magical knife do. I'm using basswood. Is the wood you use basswood? I keep trying to improve my honing/stropping; and I will practice, practice, practice; but is there a better wood to sharpen/hone for and to practice, practice, practice on? I'm coming up on 69 years old. I've always wanted to whittle; had an older relative who was quite good at it when I was a yonker; but I didn't bother to learn anything from him. Now I want to be at least proficient; and try to bring my 5 grandchildren into the hobby. Thanks for all you show us!

    • @KevinCoates98
      @KevinCoates98  5 років тому

      James practice will make you better for sure. As for wood, I use white pine. It’s softer than basswood but I don’t know if it’s better. The best advice I can give is just keep on carving

    Amazing what you achieve with that bit knife. It looks like you clipped the point of it to get that look. Can you tell more about it?
    It's very relaxing, watching you see make something out of wood.

      Thanks. This knife is/was a fillet knife. At one point in time it was used to cut roof shingles. The blade was roughly twice the length it is now. It got broken off. I took it and cleaned it up a little. Sharpened it of course and now it’s my favourite knife to use

    Not sure everyone is noting the slicing motion of your blade as you pare or push through the wood, which is a more powerful and efficient cutting action. I'm just getting into caricature carving, but have been spoon carving for about 5 years now and have learned what a difference such things make. I very much appreciate you freely sharing your skills. A master class for sure. I do wish that on at least some videos, especially the face carving, that you gave some voice over instruction on why you make the cut choices you do as they build on one another. Thanks! (I recently posted my first attempt at a little fellow on instagram @jalanmckenzie )

      Thanks Hilda. I’ve been carving for 20 yrs and I’m still learning too. Always something new to learn. I used flesh tone acrylic slightly thin with water. Then I use a really washed out red for nose, cheeks, ears and lips.
