You are a phenomenon, an authentic wood carving craftsman, and every day i learn from you, so i can start carving in three dimensions, thank you very much, from Murcia (Spain).
Hi Kevin! I began whittling and carving when I was 13 years old, using my mother's not so sharp or stropped (like who strops a paring knife?) paring knife, and rather hacked out a simple sitting dog. I was bitten by the woodcarving bug back then, and have been whittling and carving ever since (I am 68 now). Regardless of my age and experience, I know I can always learn something new, and I do just that watching you whittle and carve various characters. I like your whittling knife. My wife snickers when I show her my big Swedish bush knife (Morakniv) that I use to chop off big bits of wood at the beginning. It's about 8 or 9 inches long and about 2 inches wide, and came extremely sharp and stropped (a testament to Swedish quality). I just wanted to express my appreciation for you taking the time to share your skills and talents with us all. Take care, God bless, and continue enjoying your art and craft! :-)
Aside from the artistry, I like the pure sound of blade slicing thru wood. Impressive how he understands the grain so well, he manipulates the wood as he cuts. Very nice.
I enjoy watching your videos on carving. I have learned a lot about how to do things. I hope to get half as good. Keep up the great work. God bless you
Kevin I like many others, am a BIG fan or yours!!! Nothing fancy, just great clean cuts, direct to the point and very little wasted cuts! I certainly envy your techniques and attempt to apply them in many of my carvings! Thanks for ALL you do and especially you sharing your knowledge and expertise with less experienced carvers!!! Safe carving to you and yours ALWAYS!!!
Amazing Techniques ! I try to follow your moves and have learned so much. You have brought much joy & satisfaction to what was so fustrating in my beginning. Many Thanks
Real Nice Kevin Now ! That fillet knife - PLEASE tell the full process for getting that blade the size it is and the sloping shape on the end there ??? Thanks Andy - The City Of Stirling - Scotland U.K.
I am new at carving Kevin and watching your videos has been extremely helpful to me. You are the master. I would love to know the story behind your carving knife. Thanks much for sharing your amazing talent.
My first time seeing this video. Great carving. Could you give me the dimension from the top of the block to the bottom of the beard. I can't seem to get it right. Thanks
Hi Kevin, many thanks for sharing your unique experience in wood carving. I learning from you and Doug Linker. What kind of wood are you used in this video. It looks like pine. Thanks again master!
Wow! You’ve truly mastered your craft. Carvin the eyes are so hard but you’ve got it down. I will be adding a link to your page on my next wood carving video.
@@KevinCoates98 BTW: I used an old Rapala (blade from Finland). After I cut the blade to make a carving knife like yours, I used the scrap front part of the blade to make a smaller "detail' knife with a simple handle I made from scrap walnut. Both turned out great. Now using them to whittle "an old sea captain" ...fun project for an old Army guy who took up carving a few months ago thanks to folks like you and Doug Linker teaching us old dogs new tricks! God bless...
Do you prep your wood at all? I know some people spray it with a mixture of water and rubbing alcohol. I'm just curious what your prepping methods are to your wood you use. I've been looking into different methods but I haven't tried anything yet.
Thanks Mick. I can keep going but have to cut it off somewhere. The more time I put into it means the more the price will be and I like for them to sell
Mario, I really don’t know what is best. I use white pine because that’s all is available to me. For the most part I find it a decent wood to carve. Some say basswood is a better wood. I haven’t used basswood enough to know
Beautiful work Kevin. Do you know the sku number for the kiln dried white pine you get at Home Depot? I’m having trouble finding it. How thick is this wood? It looks to be more than 3/4” thick. Finally, I saw a comment about the size of block you started this one with but didn’t see it. Would you repeat that for me? I can’t tell you how much I enjoy your work. You are truly amazing Kevin. Thank you so much!
Thanks Laurie, I can’t find any number on the wood I have here. It’s rough lumber and varies a little in thickness. It runs between 1 1/8” - 1 1/2”. I usually put the block size in the description now. The size I used for this one 4” x 1 3/4” x 1 1/4”
Kevin Coates Thanks Kevin. I’ll take your description as measurements to HD and see if they can point me in the right direction. I appreciate your response. Please keep the great videos coming. I’m looking forward to trying my next project with the same type of wood. Have a great day!
Most Hobby Stores have bass wood and light small carving blocks. HD, Lowes and such tend to only have dimensioned lumber with 1" boards being underthickness after being dressed. Woodcraft online or in a store has a much better choice
Hi Kevin Thought I posted this yesterday but must have done something wrong. I was wondering if that was the new knife you made in the video? if not have you used it and do you like it?

Great video Kevin! What is the size of the v-tool or gouge you use here?
How do you know when to stop. Seems there’s always a bit more you can do. Really enjoy watching you. All the best Mick.
Thanks Mick. I can keep going but have to cut it off somewhere. The more time I put into it means the more the price will be and I like for them to sell
Amazing work Kevin 😎 first time I've ever seen you using a gouge 😲😁
Thanks. I use them occasionally
Dear friend, what type of wood you recommend for carving in your way. Best regards!
From Ecuador.
Mario.

What type of knife are you using?
It’s a fish fillet knife
@@KevinCoates98 you seem to cut effortlessly. I have a flexcut and it seems harder than what you are using lol
Maybe it’s the wood. What do you use?
@@KevinCoates98 I use basswood. I purchased an 8'x 12"x2" piece and cut it down on a bandsaw. I plan to buy the same size in butternut
@@KevinCoates98 I'm very new to carving. I may just need to develop my skills and muscles lol
I can’t see the size, anyone can reply thx
