- Alton Towers is one of the UK's most popular theme parks and dates back many years as both a stately home and an amusement park. The park opened in 1980, owned by businessman John Broome. It was then bought by the Tussauds Group in 1990, and then Merlin Entertainments in 2007 who still own the park to this day. This 45 minute video takes you through the history of the park's rides, attractions, shows and incidents that have occurred over the last 37 years.

I will probably prefer BPM for nostalgia, however I haven't been to Alton and I'd much rather go there instead of Thorpe Park.

If you want to ride thunder looper you have to go to Hopi hari theme park
Fun fact Hopi hari has the old corkscrew roller coaster trains so Hopi hari now owns two of Alton towers history
You can i think well I think it's in another theme park in Brazil and it's superman themed though. Idk if it's still there though.

No Callum thankyou for providing us all with these amazing videos! On the other hand i have had some bad news today, my school may not be going to Alton towers due to the accident at Drayton Manor, we got every year up until i leave school in 1 year and i was really looking forward to going again!

Oh the nostalgia. So many former rides that I loved, gone. One of them that I miss most is Black Hole. And despite how rough it ended up becoming, I loved Corkscrew too.

i always thought myself an uber towers nerd, but i thought nemmy was sw2 and sw1 was a Schwarzkopf fail attempt, but the arrow stuff checks out...must be remembering stuff wrong hahaha
To be honest if I was designing these rides, I would have put Nemesis as SW1 to avoid confusion.
Brilliant video, thanks so much for taking the time to do this! Brings back loads of memories for me as been going there since I was a kid, looking forward to bringing my own kids soon to CBeebies Land.
But will miss Ripsaw, never forget the endless rides on that as it was right next to Nemesis. Do any UK parks have one of these type of rides left I wonder? Would like to bring my son on one of those to share with him too.

Could this level detail be expected in a future Thorpe Park History video update? I would enjoy that. Great video though. I noticed many rides that went unmentioned in the old video. I also enjoyed your inclusion of the many accidents at the park. It showed the increased level of research you put in

Hi something you missed about Oblivion: the park were trying to open the world's first flying coaster but technical setbacks and deadlines meant that B&M designed the vertical drop coaster with John Wardley and after Oblivion opened they returned to the flying coaster concept.

According to an ad from the early 1980s, you could get in for only £2.50!

First trip from my school birkdale high school in dewsbury was in 1981 .sat on the pirate ship,log flume ,corkscrew, this brought back good memories
Great memories. I remember going in 1983. Me and my sister went with our beloved Nan on one of her work outings. We were blown away by the corkscrew!!. We thought only America had things like that!!!. I used to go back with friends after that for many more years. The corkscrew remained my favourite coaster. Even the bad press it started to get later in its life didn’t spoil the memories for me. I’m now close to my 50th birthday and I think if I went on a coaster now I’d be off work with my back for weeks😂😂
Rest In Peace corkscrew 1980-2008 you will be missed by fans as the first double inverted coaster in Europe

Loved the rides (But Nemesis is my favourite) but still scared of oblivion will never go on it.
Galactica/Air was my first ride and its beautiful to ride on especially I am new to flying coasters

What’s popping?
I still have a VHS family holiday tape from (I think around 1999/2000) and the music at 16:40 can be heard throughout......this brings back so much memories, and just goes to show that nothing lasts forever unfortunately 😔
I had my first trip to Alton towers in October on the opening day of scarefest this year as a day out with my college. The first ride I went on was the battle gallions and there was just one boat with people on (me, friends, a woman and her two young children) because it was early. A man shot water at us from the path and I got soaked to the bone.
At the end of the day me and my friends were sitting on a wall in Towers Street when all the other people were leaving, waiting for the other people in the college group to regroup and we saw a little boy steal a pumpkin. He ran up to catch up with his mum yelling “mummy mummy! I got a pumpkin!!!” And he refused to put it back so his mother had to.

Were the gondolas for the Skyride replaced in 2009 because of the fire at the CCL station? I'm not sure if it was but both events occurred in 2009...
I know they both happened at the same time, but I would imagine that the gondolas would have been ordered before the fire took place but might have been delayed by the fire. If they were ordered after, it would probably wouldn't have been ready for the start of the 2010 season as they were, and would probably have been introduced a few months in
