"Hall of the Mountain King" has been a great iconic theme for Alton Towers for over 30 years.
I can't help but like the ads from the 80s as the music has that feeling of excitement that makes me want to be there.

I really wish that enterprise, corkscrew, thunderlooper and Blackhole where still there as i never got to ride them. I also wish it was still £2.50 for entry.
Black hole was class, corkscrew definitely showed it’s age towards the end came out of that ride with a mild concussion 😂

They were more like 70s adverts, LOL (when Alton Towers was relatively smaller scale and more local as a theme park) but still very interesting and got their charm.
Then: ooo we got fun rides for the family! Come to alton towers!

Fuck yes. The creepy theming is one of the best aspects of AT. Sets it above other UK parks IMHO.

They've definitely gone back to the family friendly vibe for their ads in the last few years - let's hope SW9 brings back some creepy theming..

Basically yeah and here in the UK it's probably more famously known as such
yep without its like having a pbj sandwich with no bread if you know what I mean
The first time I rode the Corkscrew, in the late 80s probably, I was only just tall enough after years of disappointment.
We came down the 1at corner (the bit behind Terry Wogan (2.49)) then, as it rose up again I naturally pushed against my harness which lifted full in the air leaving me dangling by my arms. My big brother sitting next to me reached over, pulled me down & slammed my harness back in place just as we went upsidedown.
When we got off I wanted to go again but my brother wouldn't let me.
I didn't realise the gravity of what would have happened if he hadn't been next to me until years later. I genuinely owe him my life.

I like how in 1980 it costs only 2.50 per entry, which means its about 9 pounds today. But now it costs like 40 pounds pp lol
I reckon their justification would be that it's a very different park now to 1980.
Peter Kay did that great sketch about rides like Nemesis and Oblivion, how ridiculous and OTT they seemed to folks brought up on the 80's stuff.
Also suspect they've worked out a sweet-spot with ticket prices, like imagine it was £9, I'd deffo go more often...but then loads of other people would too.
End up with 6 hour cues as standard.

There's actually a couple of versions - one with more shots of the girl, one with more shots of the riders. Supposedly the version with more shots of the girl was a post watershed version, shown past 9pm as to not disturb kids.. They're both back to back at 24:26
As someone from America I want to go to Alton Towers and check it out.

Best theme park in UK. Thanks to batman the ride we have the legendary nemesis.
When i was younger I visited at least a couple of times a year; back then they really leaned into the creepy / gothic / occult theming, which apparently US parks can't really do due to the influence of the conservative Christian lobby. The setting with the vast wooded grounds and the backdrop of the massive ruined Gothic mansion (once the biggest private home in Europe) is perfect for the dark theme and as it's in Northern England, chances are you'll get a suitably gloomy overcast day for it. I'm 44 now and haven't been back to AT for years but I'm determined to do Scarefest one of these days. I visited before in autumn and it really adds to the eerie atmosphere of the place.

2.50, 3.99, 5.99 😭😭 now it's £70 if you don't book in advance. Mind you, it's still the best theme park. I love the scary factor of it

Eh, it was a glorified funfair in the grounds of a crumbling ruin back then.
My favourite era was the early-mid 90s - lots of good rides, but not yet too overcommercialised (and expensive) as it is now.

Yep, that was my era. 14 in 1993, first visit to AT with school for the last night of the fireworks. Rode the Black Hole, Thunder looper and Corkscrew. Bonus was that I got to go round the park with a gorgeous Goth lass who I had a massive crush on (hi Amy 👋) The park was so creepy and atmospheric in late autumn and nowhere near as overdeveloped or commercialised as it is today. Anyone got a DeLorean I can borrow for an evening 😊
If you're going for a 5 at alton towers and you've got carex it only costs 240dollars

Yep, it started as a haunted house dark ride. Then it became Duel after its first re-theme.
By far the best dark ride I've ever been on. The Duel re-theme ruined it :(

Where’s the full version of the Toyland Tours advert?
Decided not to include it this time. I'm not entirely sure of it's origin but I don't believe it was a TV advertisement in the same way as the others, which was part of the reason. The main reason for not including it though was because it was too long. I rewatch these back myself from time to time and always found myself skipping it 😂
