great job my dude, maybe grab some rare earth magnets for lid closures like that . . .easy to put in, adds to the box quality and value and offers a bit more retention, which is often lacking in smaller boxes :) still freak'n wish i had half that stuff, still recovering from big pharma try'n to kilt me for the past 15yrs >< :) and videos like this help me sate the urge and endure the time until i have returned to a shop :) so thanks man!

Anyway, the scrapped walnut planks in my stock is calling my name pretty hard watching you sculpt this lovely piece. I love your work, you're obviously very skilled. That only comes with practice. The risk of different rates of movement because there are two different species of wood could possibly cause the glue joint to fail. Have you considered using your router plane to make a dado for a floating bottom panel? Still though, great build and the dovetails were spot on.

I only brought it up because I have a couple of boxes I made like that and one of them got used in the bathroom for tweezers, nail files, etc, and the bottom blew right off of it once the humidity from the shower hit it a few times. To top it off, I was using Titebond 3.
Beautiful box…your careful attention to details such as the fit of the lid makes it truly special. Why the pine bottom as a visible piece? Part of your desired esthetic? Or what you had on hand? Thanks for another great video.
The biggest thing is to get sharp and sharpen frequently. Secondary to that, wax or oil the plane sole regularly. Tertiary - for difficult grain, put the cap iron very close to the edge of the iron

Well you're not alone! Feedback has been overwhelmingly against it. Even my own wife said it should have been walnut 🤣 My thought process was that I thought the contrast would look cool, sort of like when there's a streak of sapwood next to dark walnut.

How do you like your No° 5? I’ve seen you use it in nearly every video, but don’t remember you mentioning what maker and what kind of set up you went through. I can’t tell for certain, but it looks like you use Woodriver/Benchdog planes primarily and a Veritas Scrub. I’m happy with my tools, I just like to hear from guys the varied experiences they have setting up new tools.
The guy’s amazing! But I’m still frustrated by the looks of a floor glued straight to the bottom. Even when I use the same woods, it stands out too much for my eye. So I usually cut a rabbet, then wonder about how to avoid the little chunk of groove showing at the corners.

Wood river cap iron, fits ok even with the veritas blades. As for the scrub plane, trust me you will not regret it. Will make a blog post soon on the topic
I use my L/A B/U Jack and sometimes my L/A B/U Block. Depends on workpiece size and thickness. Nothing wrong at all with it. The shooting board don't care.
sometimes you just have to realize certain things, certain skills, are out of reach.... if I tried this, all I would eventually have left is a bunch of wood shavings...😞
Seeing you bat the wood chips into the trash can with the Coping saw is great, that's someone who is loving what they're doing
It's awesome to see all of that work done with only hand tools. I know what you were doing, I know how to do it, I would just be horrible at it.

Is there any real advantage to using that large frame saw to rip boards? It seems a little cumbersome to use.

those tools are so sharp.... i could never get them even close to sharp

Do you basically have a Stanley #3 for scrub planing, a #5 for smoothing, and a block plane that you use for shooting?
The scrub plane is a veritas scrub plane, other that that you got it!

Sterling tool works, total luxury but great tool. Best design out there, imo.

Love the #5, it's the wood river but with a veritas o1 blade. Not as fine as some of the other makers but it does the job for now!
