  • Land Rover Discovery 3 GULLWING Installation - Part One UNBOXING
    Join me as I start on this gullwing short series where I install a Out-Rack Gullwing on my Discovery 3. In this video I will do the unboxing and show you what you get in the box and share some details around the product.
    I have never installed a window before, and more so, never installed a gullwing, so this is really going to be a true DIY gullwing installation.
    As you will see from the video the rear quarter window removal on the discovery 3 can be a bit tricky and I think I made a good choice there.
    The Gullwing Product was supplied by Out-Rack, free of charge, and this is the link to their website: www.out-rack.com/en/prodotto/...
    More info about the gullwing at the bottom.
    I want to thank the people over at Out-Rack for sending it to me and for letting me test it out in proper winter condition. In return I will give them feedback on the product on how it copes with the tough arctic winter conditions and the salty roads we have here.
    Thank you for watching this one and I wish you best,
    Simon Mastermo 👍😊

    Out-Rack Gullwing Information
    "
    The Gullwing side panel for Discovery L319 from Out-Rack is the ultimate component for those who want to prepare their vehicle for Overlanding.
    The kit forms the basis of an expandable and modular loading system, which allows space inside and outside the vehicle that would otherwise be unused to be utilised.
    The Gullwing for Discovery L319 replaces the side glass of the third row and is installed either with screws, not visible when the operation is complete, or with normal window sealant.
    The basic kit consists only of the panel that is installed in place of the glass. Made of stainless steel and powder-coated, it is manufactured using the best components on the market. In order to get the most out of the product, Out-Rack recommends installation by qualified personnel (body shops).
    Practical gas dampers make it easy to open and close the door, and a pair of locks with a key allow the door to be securely closed. An automotive gasket prevents water from entering through the door opening, even under the most demanding conditions such as high-pressure washing.
    Two aluminium ‘Airline’ rails firmly fixed to the panel offer the possibility of anchoring Out-Rack accessories or other objects outside the vehicle. They are supplied in natural aluminium as standard and are also available in black, powder-coated on request.
    As a complement to the panel, there is also the specific internal cabinet equipped with panel springs and shelves.
    NOTE:
    The product is compatible with 5- or 7-seater vehicles.
    Removing the right glass also removes one of the radio’s two FM antennas. From the tests run, this does not prevent good channel reception. For basic audio systems (6-button radio), however, the installation of an external FM antenna (not included) is recommended.
    By removing the left glass, the TV antenna is removed. In this case, it was not possible for us to carry out tests ourselves.
    Material: Stainless Steel
    Finish: UV-resistant powder coating
    Kit contents:
    no. 1 gullwing side panel with door
    nr. 2 “Airline” rails
    hardware required for installation

    Hi Simon, i like the idea of the gull wings but not sure i like the you ones you have as it seems that the access hatch is too small compared to the window opening.
    Would be better if they almost filled the area so you have more room to access items in the rear.

      Hey and sorry for the late reply, I understand where you are coming from and I think it’s a give and take between constructional stiffness and how big the opening can be.
      So far it hasn’t been an issue and no issues with the gullwing.
      I guess if you were to put in and pull out bigger objects it could become an issue.
      Will make an update when I have used it a bit more. More videos will come after Easter. 😊

    Exciting! Would fit them too on both sides, if it wasn't more of a daily driver as well. Somehow I still want to retain the boot as stock as possible for passengers in the 3rd row. But now that you are getting it on, it's really tempting I must say :-)

      @LandRoverDrive  3 місяці тому +2

      Yeah it really is, and I'm like you. Keeping it as a daily for now so that it can function as a overlander and family car at the same time. Why my draw setup is designe to be removable with 8 bolts. 😊 I don't have the third row so not an issue for me, but I find I do miss that some times in daily life. I am very tempted to do both sides at some point and we will see what the time bring. Which side would you do first? I chose the driver side to have quick access.

      @@LandRoverDrive Passenger, as with a LHD I mounted the 270 batwing to the passender side.

      Nice, wouldn’t mind a 270 my self. 😊 Been using the tarp for many years now and an awning would be nice upgrade. 👍

    Hi Simon,I was really excited to see this video as I am considering doing this to my D3 at some stage. I have already fitted the LRP tailgate handle and that's great for access from inside. Looking forward to the installation video to follow 👍🏻😁

      Hey Simon and thanks! Will start editing the next part today. 😉 I think the Gullwing would fit your traveling nicely and a it's good way to get alternative access but also get some usage of the dead space inside the rear quarter window. I quite happy with mine and will take it too the next step soon and getting the shelves installed. 👍 Just need to figure what is more pressing to put there, coffee gear or recovery gear. 😂

      Yeah, smart, get some to fit and it would be a great solution. Could be an option for camera gear inside the Gullwing. 🤔

    Should look nice when finished. I would be inclined to just do the one side.

      Yeha, will look great, taking the Disco 3 up a couple of notches on the butch scale. And nice with the side window access. 👌 Why just one side?

      @@LandRoverDrive It could make the inside a bit dark. Although a couple of internal lights near the back would probably settle that.

      Yeah, good for summer nights up north. I need to add some internal lights, red light, so I don't looses my night vision. 😊

    I think it will look good but would be tempted to do one side only ( purely thinking of the light inside may make it dark inside ) For me I like the boxes they use on those new defenders

    • @LandRoverDrive
      @LandRoverDrive  3 місяці тому +2

      Yeah, I see your point. The light was fairly reduced in the cabin after the roof rack, didn't notice as much with the gullwing as the rear quarter windows are really darkly tinted. But it is noticeable dark inside with the roof rack. The good thing though is that in the summer here in Norway it is light out during the night so good for sleeping. 👌 I like the boxes too, would be nice to carry recovery gear in on. What would you put in it?

    How will you deal with the radio antenna? We will do this mod if there is a reasonable work around.
    Cheers,

    • @LandRoverDrive
      @LandRoverDrive  3 місяці тому +1

      Hey, The radio works fine, it’s one of two antennas and I haven’t noticed any difference. FM radio in Norway is on its way out too so no need for it.
      They have tested this as well and found the same results, the radio works fine with just one of the two antennas.
      Do you got FM or AM at your end?
