Ever since I was a kid ,I had a huge crush for this car ! Back in 2007 ,when I was 5 ,my dad had bought be a car magazine ,which had also introduced me with the land rover discovery 3 ! In that particular journal ,it was all about an expedition with a group of 5 to 6 LRD3s ,maybe in Namibia ! That's when it even introduced me to the enthusiasm of offroading and obviously ,one of the best land rovers ever ! As I grew up ,I got to know about even the old solid axled ladies ! Ever since then ,the LRD3 has turned out to be my favourite ! Sad to see that land rover only makes crossovers , whereas once upon a time ,they made even body on frame 4x4s enough to carry and tow 1050 kgs and 3.5 tons respectively !
Hi Prakit, great back story you have there. Maybe one day the D3 value will be recognised and prices start to increase, but probably too many of them out there for this to happen for a while yet.

One thing I find fascinating and amusing about Land Rover is the controls like the ones you've outlined here. The fact that, if you do push-holds and repeated actions a certain number of times, you receive a new function--that is a really cool bonus.

One that I found, playing with the key fob - press the headlight button, and of course the headlights come on, press again within a couple of seconds and the reverse lights come on, so you have light at the back of the car

Great video, im sure my 2009 D3 HSE does show that the headlights are on on the dash (including when in auto mode). The lower tailgate release is a new one to me, the motors seem to fail a lot and all the advixe i have seen involves yanking the trim out to get to yank on some cables if i understand correctly.

Remember when I first drove a Disco 3 around 2005 - I thought it looked and felt huge. Fast forward to 2021, and I think it looks relatively small.

I just wish we had the diesel option in the States. I’m 220k miles In my D3 and off-road it like a animal. She’s a beast. Luckily I opted for the LUX. Dual battery, 2” lift , full custom rack and winch. I need to make similar videos. Good stuff. I was even in the Alloy and Grit magazine. Cheers
Which size engine is in your, i'm over here in the UK and diesels here are common as. Any issues?
@@OverlandTT no mechanical issues with engine block and heads. Haven’t even replaced the valve cover seals. It’s the 4.4 Jaguar engine. Solid engine. Literally the best Land Rover made for comfort and reliability in the States. And I have owned many models. If I could get a diesel I would be in heaven tho! Cheers

No you don't - all the diesels are on the scrap heap. The 4,4 V8s are going strong, like mine. Everyone gave me shit about the gas guzzler, but it's save me a fortune compared to the diesels

Mine's a 2008 SE TDV6. A few comments. The radio button does not allow access to the information, regardless of ignition or the radio being on and off. It may be the model and a restriction in the spec. The boot opening....yes it opens it to the first click, but then needs another press on the unlock to fully allow it to be opened. With the double button press alone, it cannot be opened at the rear. Thanks for the info! Love the little LED above the mirror, it's only when you are on dip or full that the dash info light is on, crazy that it doesn't show a sidelight function.

Most HGVs have these there called night heaters to keep drivers warm when there on overnights sleeping in cab

@@JayTeeCars wish you do same like other using old man emo spring suspension. Many youtube presentations did but i am still skeptical it can be done on LR4.
I am long time fan of LR3 or 4 but no plan to buy yet coz i don't like its air suspensions.
Had LR2 before, expensive maintenance cost force me to sold it out.

Any idea why my LR3 should error code Transmission Fault and HDC Off?
You really need to have the fault code read to determine what is wrong with the transmission, which is deactivating your HDC.

Nice vid. What wheels and size tires you have on there? And do you have lift rods installed? I have 2.5 in Johnson Rods with the 18 Compos with 265/65 Cooper S/T Maxx tires and love the set up. Basically driving around in offroad height (2.5 in lift plus .8 in from tires). I understand why they can’t come equipped this way but man is it the way this vehicle was meant to be.

We don't have an lift rods installed, and I think the tires are largest that fit without rubbing.
@@JayTeeCars sweet. Mine is an LR4 and 17s don’t fit over the calipers and I need the braking for towing so 18 is smallest I could go. Nice that you can get the 17s on there and have that slightly larger rubber. one thing that is cool about the lift rods (and you could install them temporarily before each offroad trip if you don’t want them full time- it doesn’t take too long), is that I can get additional clearance simply by selecting a Terrain Response that raises the suspension into offroad height or by selecting offroad height myself. I don’t have to wait til I’m high centered to get that extra height. Although I have found that there are very few times I need that much height for what I do, usually just leave it set in normal with the lift rods and it’s good. Downside is that when I select a Terrain Response that automatically lifts the vehicle, I have to put it back into Normal Height. Have fun out there. Gonna have to check out some of your other vids.
@@JayTeeCars I’m getting and installing the bump stocks with the limiting straps, so if I have an air suspension failure I won’t be on the tires. Will give me a bit of piece of mind. Do you have those on yours?
Hi, I don’t have limiting straps on mine, I think the tires they are just about OK if suspension fails (or at least OK on access mode). I would be interested to see yours after you fit.
What is your tyre size? Did you change your lift rods or add something else

hello, it was a very good video, I watched it many times, but I did not understand how to bring the vehicle to the maximum height, can you help me?
Love my LR3, and these are very cool features,....but watching this, did anyone else have Rube Goldberg come to mind? I mean, that back tailgate failsafe technique, with the mechanical latches redundancy for if(lets be honest, when) the electronic button fails!!! My only question now, what is the failsafe for an intermittently powered gage cluster, so I can see how much gas is left on a regular basis!!!!!
I wonder, if the tail gata open trick works with D4. It's really when camping/sleeping in car.

I have Land Rover Discovery 3, 2007, 2.7 diesel. Super car
On my lr3 the washing glasses don't work. And I don't find the problem. Pump, fusible are OK.
But I can't hear the sound of pumps. When I pressed a relay washes the glasses of the lamps working.
Is the 4x4 display an optional extra as I have a D3 2006 se and I don’t have that function just settings and nav . Great video 👍
it was a function on HSE models, it is possible to activate it by cutting one of the wires that also gives you the Range Rover display, only problem with this it also dims the screen.
There is a video out there showing this on somebody else’s channel.
Does anyone know what and how long the MOST test does???

Yes the LR3 does have a lot of electronics, which have pros and cons.

Hi, they are 265/70R17 keep in mind the 17 inch wheels only fit on the D3 diesel (D4 need 18 or 19 depending on brakes)

I am looking to get a Discovery 3 or 4, the three has the BMW engine and the four has a Jaguar engine. I would like to stick to diesel, which one and model would you recommend please?
Both the 3 and 4 have a Lion series diesel engine introduced by Ford and developed by JLR for PSA Peugeot Citroen. There are differences in it but the 3.0 is a lot smoother and quieter as well as being newer. Both, however, are good strong engines if well maintained.
@Col G'day mate. The D3 also came out with the Jag 4.4 V8. My wife owns one. Its economical, comfortable, reliable and you have that V8 torque when needed.
We've found that the V8 just ticks along just over idle when its cruising, uses bugger all fuel.
If you can find a good one, i'd recommend that.
The petrol is much more reliable
I have a problem with ptc and allerts out off nothing, but the selftest shows nothing att all, was a bit disapointing :(
What size rims and tires do you have on there? My LR3 has 19” rims and I’m going to have to change rim size to open more choices on tires!
Hi Scott, I assume you are in the US as you called it an LR3? If so you probably don't have a diesel, which means the smallest wheels that will fit ar 18 inch. The largest tyres then are 265/65R18 but also be aware if you have a post 2007 model you might need to trim the chassis horns (earlier models don't have and therefore no rubbing).

If you have a suitable code reader with the test functions, like a GAP IID Tool, there is a diesel heater test protocol, that will fire it up and test it.

Did you find the menu that prevents the crankshaft from rapidly expanding in to a million pieces? Really nice vehicles just a problem the diesels are so cranky :(
No, I think that menu might be on the D4 (possibly)

There is a headlamp warning lamp in the dash on the MY07 and up models, i fitted a Llams controller so i can go in super extended at the turn of a dial plus other height changes both up and down.
Thanks, I have considered buying a lift controller as it seems a bit more accessible compared to using OBD tools.
@@JayTeeCars it is,I was using a gap tool but this is much easier and can be done on the fly.
Llams unit was the best upgrade I ever did.

Hi Mike, it's running 265/70 R17 Cooper STT Pro, no rubbing at normal suspension height. Check out the Top 10 mods video where I talk about them.

on your D4 depending on which model you have and brakes you are restricted by wheel size, smallest is 18 or 19 inch.
@@JayTeeCars I have Compomotive PD1881 18" wheels for my D4 which is a 2016 model. The first ever Green Lane I did with these was Sarn Helen in South Wales. Apart from the wheels, its a totally standard D4. I think though more manufacturers are making 18" alloys to fit the Disco 4 these days, Moab Alloys will fit. Also Tuffant do a steel wheel so there's 3 potential options for the Disco 4 owner that I know of immediately.
I find the modern land rover wheel size options irritating. They have such massive brakes now that getting a smaller wheel on for a mud tyre is difficult, first you have to find a wheel, and if you can do that, then you have to find a tyre to fit. Though with the new "Defender" having a 18" factory option, that may fit on the other new models with a 5x120 bolt pattern too potentially? Going Green laning or to a pay n play on 20" wheels is doable as you can get AT's but, you have no sidewall to speak of so deflating the tyre is just not possible.
When I went for a set of 16" wheels for my Disco 2, my options were endless! In the end, I just opted for a set of 16" wheels from a scrapped D2 and put some STT pro's on them like you have on your D3.
Hey Mike B, I am running 275/65x18 STT pro Muds on my Discovery 3 V8, it has lift rods fitted and does rub a litle on full lock. I'll be doing a walkaround on the D3 on my channel soon as I only bought it the other day.

LR2 are good but prone to rust in body and chassis, as they are now 15 to 20 years old you need to pick one that either has been looked after or parts replaced. They are lower price to fix than LR3/4, and easier to modify.

Hi, I fitted a set of Borg & Beck recently, I can’t really say how good they are yet as I have only driven a couple hundred miles on them, but they seemed good quality and available from Amazon Prime.

Hi, thanks for the positive feedback and great to hear you joined the Discovery clan.
Engine restart will drop you back to off road height, also if you go over 30mph you will drop to normal height.
This is why I fitted XLifter as it allows you to choose whatever height you like and override the 30mph restrictor.
Having said that, I wouldn't recommend driving on the road at super extended height as the car is more unstable and it puts stress on drive train.
Another cheaper option is to fit Jonson Lift Rods, they basically fool the car in to thinking it is lower, you can buy different lengths to fit your needs.
Good advice from Jay Tee. Realize that when the LR is lifted to max height, you effectively have removed any ability for up-travel on the air shocks (making your ride quality very harsh). The higher lift functions of the LR3/4 are meant for giving you enough clearance to get over an obstacle where progress is more important than ride quality at that moment.
Saw the blooper, the tail gate upper wouldn’t open. so what had you done, and more importantly, how did you resolve it?
From memory, I think I had accidentally locked it.

Learned two things here after owning an LR3 since 2007.
I had no idea you could manually go from extended to super extended with the brake and switch combo. Super helpful on the trails. It would be great to have a similar trick to get into extended mode. I’ve got the gap tool for that for now.
Second, my upper tailgate has never operated like yours did in the main video and always does what yours did at the end. If I press the dash buttons together or use the third button on the remote (if programmed correctly) to pop open the hatch, it will pop open that slight bit. But if your not pulling on the hatch at that exact moment it’s still latched but not closed. I’ve never thought that was right and now I know that both my LR3’s are not functioning correctly.
Off to investigate now!

I'm so torn on getting an LR3 or not. Are they really that pricey?
In the UK they are low price to purchase for the amount of car. You need to be aware of potential costs as they can be expensive to fix, but I have only paid out £900 on service and repairs in the last 2 years.

Haven’t got one on mine, it’s the base model. May of been removed by previous owner though.

It was an out take, we were trying to show the tailgate opening feature, but it seems I accidently locked the car.

Left out the 3 presets you can get your Landover to do with the 3rd land rover button on your key fob! Or did i just teach you that? Lol. Jk. Can set it to drop the landy, or open tailgate or turn headlights on from a distance. Also you didn't show how to reset moon roof if not functional.
Yep.. in theory that isn’t so much of a secret as it is in the handbook.
I have mine set to switch the lights on/off, as I find that the most helpful.
