- Should You Buy a Land Rover DISCOVERY 3? I Wasn't Expecting This... (2.7 TDV6 Test Drive & Review)
I got to drive my Grandparents Land Rover Discovery 3 for the first time and was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it!

To counter the reliability argument, I've had mine since 2006, purchased with 1k on the clock, 186k miles now, never let me down, just serviced once a year, even still on it's original battery. Never garaged, but it is showing it's age now, but still enjoy driving it...a real workhorse. I know people have had issues, but they can be reliable. Nice video and informative.
Original battery? 186k miles? Fuck off mate
Thank you for sharing this, I keep telling people who always complain about the unreliability of Land Rovers that if you learn how to take care of these cars they will continue to take care of you giving you a happy ownership experience 🤧and that goes with any car outside LR and some think the grass is greener with the Germans time it's not😂but truthfully same goes for them too
That’s good to hear. Tbh I’ve had two defenders and an F reg Range Rover and I really didn’t have any issues to speak of. I’ve been put off in recent years by all,the talk about unreliability but that seems to be mainly the more complicated models with ooodles of electronics. I have a decent independent LR specialist nearby so hopefully he can give a look over any I fancy buying. Andy UK
I used to have a Disco 3, it constantly had issues. Now got a Disco 4 SDV6 with the 8 speed automatic, far superior car in every way! It’s done 178,000 miles and only once had an issue which was a corroded earth cable. Full fat Range Rover or a Sport aren’t big enough for x3 car seats, so it will always be a Discovery for me!
I think this review is spot on. The disco was designed to be a blend of the utilitarian defender and the
luxury Range Rover.
I had a Disco 3 HSE. It was a really perfect car, a well built and comfortable all rounder and no trouble mechanically. I had from 50,000 to 170,000 miles until someone crashed into me and wrote it off.
28 mpg is amazing!
My Discovery II gets around 12 mph.
I absolutely love my D3…. No intention of changing it. Lugs around tons of stuff, comfortable either on or off road, will go practically anywhere, did I say it was comfortable, and a silky smooth power delivery. Good routine servicing will serve you well. The best car for a long haul drive, or a spirited drive on cross country . Visibility around town is awesome
Hi may I ask please which engine and gearbox did you choose?
Excellent content, very much enjoyed watching this 👌
I had a discovery 3 XS a few yrs ago as I’d always wanted one…it was a 2008 model with only 65000 on the clock..within 6months I’d spent quite a lot of money changing the cam belt and gubbings ! Air suspension compressor full service etc and then the really expensive bit ! those bloody EGR valves 🤬 they seized completely and would have cost me another £1000 !! I originally wanted to just remove them and blank them off but was told it was not possible on this particular model !? Anyway the man came out to get me going and he temporarily blocked them off so I could at least drive to the garage for repairs…well it drove brilliantly with the so called temporary repair that I didn’t bother getting them replaced and managed to rack up another 8000 miles before I sold the vehicle on !! 👍👍💪😀
Hi Lucy really enjoyed your comments of the discovery 4 from a young person point of view i have owned many different landrovers over many years a man of 70 yrs,and love them all much more than just a car has a spirit that other do not have. Yes it brings a smile to one.had many 4 discovery’s i now own a 5 discovery yes more like a Range Rover,i love to hear and see you put one though its paces soon i hope.you are a joy to watch thankyou kind regards robert.
Hi Lucy, glad you did a luxury SUV from this era! Great video.
Having driven nearly all Land Rover's ever made I am a huge fan but after the last experience I had with a breakdown I have now gone over to Jaguar and recently swapped our E Pace to our current i-Pace and love it. It is an HSE on 22" rims with air suspension and pan roof and Meridian surround sound with black belt line and window surrounds against Corrus Grey which I think is the best colour combo. With regards the new Defender I hope you get to drive it soon as I am sure you will love it. My wife and I got to take one 1200 Meters up into the Perthshire hills last January in the snow that fell that morning on off road tracks and it didn't lose traction once. It was in a convoy with a Disco 5 and Range Rover Autobiography. I came across your channel and liked and subscribed
Brilliant video.
Dash cluster lookd very similar to my 2011 Freelander 2.
Would be happy for you to drive mine and review it. I'm based near Manchester though.
One thing I like about this era of Lady's is the 6 speed manual box and the chunky knobs for the stereo and terrain response.
Oh and the old style hand brake. Not a fan of the later buttons and the electronic hand brake.
Looking forward to further reviews and of course more Landy and Range Rover content.
Random heads up for disco 3/4 with V6 TDI, ignore the recommended oil for UK and use 5w-40 C3 oil, it'll save your crank bearings and make the engine much smoother.
Christian and Vera from @LR Time said the same thing.
@@tekpic04 it's a known known, defo do it!
To be honest it all depends on the pick up get . I have had my D3 for a while now it’s done 206000 miles on the clock, just flew through the MOT with only a light bulb out on the license plate & Monitor on the rear disc’s that can be changed in a few months , this beast has never let me down even when my wife put the wrong fuel in!!! .it. I am not sure 🤔 if anyone knew the D3 on development . The car was developed over four million test miles on five continents and included the Australian Outback and Dubai as well as northern Canada, Scandinavia, Las Vegas, Tokyo, New York, Denver and, perhaps unusually for a proper off-roader, the Nurburgring. There you have it folks the D3 ain’t no joke if well looked after!!.
I have a discovery 3 and I love every minute of it
Nice Land Rover 😊 thanks for this video
I had a Range Rover sport 2.7 and I loved it was on a 06 plate and it was more comfortable that the one I have got now
Great channel. Will you be reviewing a cheap RR Sport?
Last week we had - 43,6 negativ degrees C here in Sweden and a lot of snow, that is cold. Anyway like your chanel.
Timely video, just looking at an ax for one of these and will go and look tomorrow. It has high mileage but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Andy UK
The Disco 3 still looks great twenty years after it was first introduced. You must keep on top of the maintenance if you want a reliable Land Rover. Great review of a very sophisticated car that is simply outstanding off road.
I agree. Just maintain them. Done 144k in my current L322. Over 100k by me. No big issues
We've had our disco 3 for 2 years and worked it hard on the farm and use it for camping...not one problem
Try a HSE instead of the base model GS. Mine has buttons on the steering wheel, satnav, heated leathers seat front and rear, plus every optional extra. It also has the Webasto heater, so it's warm when I get in in the morning. My Defender is "tractory" 😂 in comparison.
Hi Lucy drive a discovery 4 auto and you will love it I've had mine for 11yrs 91,000 miles still drives like new never get fed up of driving it and it's quick I 've drove other makes no were near as good superb towing vehicle
06 D3 TDV6 as my daily driver. Today it clocked 436k km and still humming along. Get a Gap Tool and dont skip on maintenance. Its a lovely car in all other respects
I see you've taken my advice 😜
Had a Discovery 3 and loved it then I got a Freelander 2 and was very surprised by how nice it drives just waiting to pick up a Discovery 4 in the next couple of days 😎🏴
Whether this is sad or not a perk of your vids for me as a local is sussing out which parts of worthing and surrounding areas you are in throughout the video, if I'm right it ended at the Brooklands petrol station!
I might bring my 2009 NC3.2 top spec MX-5 over for review later this year when the weather cheers up if you're interested. Keep em coming guys :)
North Lancing...
Would love to see more Discovery 3 videos :)
Love my LR Discovery 4 automatic
L319 are awesome! They do have their problems, it's almost comical how problematic they are. But they are capable 4x4s and nice things to drive. They are plush weighty things that feel like proper cars. Sure the small engined ones like yours are kind of gutless, but they have enough pep to never feel unsuitable in daily traffic, at least in the UK where there are mani slower cars around.
These are about the comfort, practicality of driving an SUV, and weekend green landing fun. Personally though, I think an auto is best suited to a Disco 3. Older Defenders, HiLuxes, D-Maxes, and older Land Cruisers though, yeah I want those in manual.
Can i just say how nice and refreshing it is to see a female in car journalism.
Someone dissed your channel ! So I told them to find a knitting channel ! 😅😅
Hi Lucy,
In your opinion how does the 2012 322 compare with the 405, particularly on quietness and ride comfort.
I'm thinking of changing from a lexus ls600 (luxury personified)
So the 2 points I mention are really important to me.
Stephen
There is the classic joke that the Discovery is known as a Disco because of all the lights in the dashboard.
These still look good
I have the automatic... lovely car despite the huge maintenance costs that come with owning one
I’ve owned two and they are best car ever
Drive a discovery 4... the 3.0 SDV6 with the 8 speed auto box is far superior in every way. Having had a 3 for years and upgrading to a 4 its an unbiased opinion!
No; opt for an XC90 d4 or d5 instead.
First off, so relieved your Grandad’s not a Ninja (legend)…
2nd…what’s your views on VW Touran’s? (2007 onwards) 😊
“It’s like the Discovery is somewhere between the Defender and a Range Rover” genius 😂
Being a 2007 I hope they have changed the oil pump when the cambelts done
The best way I can describe the power delivery of the 2.7-litre TDV6 is it catches you by surprise. It's just so effortless, wafting I suppose. You end up going a lot faster than you think because of it.
28 mpg seems pretty good considering my smax round town is doing about 34.
Lucy, did you put on your "Wellies" to film this review 😊
You should really do a review of an original Range Rover Classic. It was after all the vehicle that defined the modern SUV..
Please do a fluffy socks review, eg how many steps to the mile etc x
If you need both offroad ability and a big, comfy cabin, this beast is wonderful. However, I have as much interior space in a VW Sharan that weighs a ton less and goes as fast as that Discovery with a simpler 2 litre diesel engine and bumps around car parks just fine. Is it very cool? Not really, but it does the job brilliantly. You're welcome to test it!
Hey Lucy l have a land rover discovery from new
My land rover discovery she is a princess she treats me with respect and l respect her too my female land rover discovery she is so so comfy at night l tried her out for stealth camping it' gives you loads of room for cooking
Hi, Lucy really enjoying your channel. Nice that you are reviewing different cars. Keep up the good work.
Seems like a nice car despite its age
Yes get one or similar
Yea
Watch out for the snapped cranks!
Yahooo Lucky!!!
The GS model you have is the most simple model. Have a look at a HSE, and you will see a huge difference. :) 28 MPG is good, i would say. I have a 4.4 petrol, and now during winter i have 15 MPG. :D
Was the V8 only available in HSE, do you know? All the V8s I find for sale are top spec.
@@bindefuni5407 Not sure, but it might be. Mine was imported from the US.
Disco's are great. I think the Disco 4 is the pick or the crop. I'd have one if the L322 didn't exist. A good L322 is peak Land Rover for me.
My dad used to have a 2005 Discovery 3 when I was a kid, and I thought it was a very nice car indeed.
It was September 2010, and I remember eagerly awaiting the moment when my dad would pull up onto our driveway in it, and when I saw PN55TZH pulling onto our driveway for the first time, I immediately went outside to have a look around it, and I remember being very impressed by what I saw.
Our Discovery was a 2005 (55-reg) HSE model with the 2.7-litre TDV6 turbodiesel paired with the 6-speed automatic, and it was finished in a dark metallic blue (called Buckingham Blue) with the 'Alpaca' cream leather interior, which looked really nice.
Because our Discovery was an HSE model, it was fully loaded with all the bells and whistles, some of which we’d never had on any car we’d ever owned before, including tri-zone climate control, heated rear seats, rear audio controls, etc, which 10-year-old me thought was very impressive indeed. Plus, its air suspension made it a very comfortable and relaxing car to travel in - as Jeremy Clarkson said in his Discovery 3 review back in Series 5 of Top Gear to describe the ride quality, "it doesn't go over bumps, it just flattens them."
It also proved to be very useful during the massive amounts of snowfall we had in the UK during the winter of 2010/11 that we experienced around that time, because being four-wheel-drive it had no trouble whatsoever driving on the snow-covered roads that would have left my mum's Zafira struggling for grip.
Even to this day, I still consider the Discovery to be one of my favourite cars we've had out of all the cars my family has ever owned so far.
I had one for 18 years from new until I sold it recently. Shockingly unreliable. Especially the EPB and air suspension. Brakes totally under specced for the size of the vehicle. However when it wasn't going wrong I loved it.
Your old Range Rover l322 is up for sale on auto trader
28 mpg is pretty good for a heavy vehicle , our evoque does about 34 mpg and its a lot lighter. The LR4 is a bit more modern inside esp the HSE
I think I had those same shoes when I was 8 years old xD
Discovery 3 v8 petrol is more reliable than the diesel. My lr3 2008 has 242k miles on it. Still on original airbags and handbrake.
Do look at the model when you decide to buy a lr3.HSE has the most options. Like buttons on the stearing wheel for cruisecontrol and music volume. Also heated seats and airco for the back seats. There was even an option for a fridge between the front seats.
And you forgot 3 cupholders in your Review. One popout in de globebox, and 2 more at yhe back of the center console for the back seats.
Great video Lucy! Have you had muc( luck with your search for your new car to replace th3 Range Rover yet? I think a disco 3 or 4 might suit you guys!
I remember my dad teaching me to drive off road I; his original discovery! Really really forgiving clutch and gearbox, clear gate, long but not too long between each gear so not easy to find the wrong gear when you’re very inexperienced! Being a diesel and having such a forgiving clutch, easy not to stall!
My gosh though, it was SLOW! Like 19 seconds to sixty! So a disco 3 was a huge improvement, it’d beat a disco 1 without your foot being flat o; the floor! The gap in fuel consumption between the diesel and petrol wasn’t that great in the real world in reality, as you had to literally drive the diesel absolutely flat out just to get out of the way of its own shadow!
The lady literally shows a road near my apartment building in the city center of Novosibirsk
Nice car, but the 2.7 I understand has a very poor water pump and brittle. If that has been changed to the newer stronger design it should be great.
It's not the water pump it's the early type oil pumps had insufficient material where the timing belt tensioner was mounted, so the pump casing could snap, your belt fall off, and destroy the engine. This typically happens after the belt has been replaced and the tensioner bolt over-tightened - it's a very specific torque for this reason. This is rectified by fitting the latest oil pump which has extra reinforcement when you do the timing belt, and also has a bigger rotor too for extra oil flow.
Yeah sorry not water pump oil. I do apologise
Nice vehicle. Think I prefer it over a Range Rover. Also really doesn’t look that old.
….didnt like the old “step” design of earlier models.
2nd hand prices are low but it’s the reliability that has always concerned me.
No remote controls on the steering wheel? Very strange.
Cute.
It’s a basic model, hence no steering buttons for radio and cruise phone, voice
The D4 3.0 SDV6 is so much better. More refined, same utility, better transmission, more power and sequential twin turbos.
Must be something wrong with that one, I have the same car and get 37mpg around town, rising to 50mpg on a decent run.
Не понимаю, что ты говоришь, но смотреть интересно)) Привет из России.
LUCY .. LOVE YOUR CHANNEL .. I HAVE A LR4 3.0V6 I RECENTLY PERCHASED AFETR HAVING A GOLF R FOR 3 YEARS .. MASSIVE LAND ROVER FAN, YOU CAN BORROW MINE IF YOU LIKE .. MY NAME IS ALSO GEORGE .. I WORK IN SHOREHAM, LIVE IN BRIGHTON MARINA.. NOT FAR FROM YOU !!
17 years old
Hey Lucy it's very nice to see more young females doing car UA-cam videos it would be very nice to see you doing some car auction videos at Aston Barclay car auction centres it would be very nice to see you doing some car auction videos l would love to see you purchase your very own range rover or four whee drive come on Lucy it's time for you to do some brand new videos will you please do some car auction videos l would love to see you attend some car auctions and l would love to see you bid for your very own car from Aston Barclay car auction centres here in UK. Love watching your videos come on babe it's time for you to attend some brand new car auctions hers in Yorkshire you can then record your new car auction videos and it will show other people see you bidding for your own four wheel drive and it would be nice to see you look at some cars four wheel drives or land rover this will also show other people how much you are paying out for
Is it weird I think the ninja-handle umbrella is really cool?? Guess this comments goes into the weird-and-whacky box Lucy talked about...
Oh well, it feeds the almighty Algorithm if nothing else
It's pure luck how good one of these is....some people have no trouble at all....but when it does go it's expensive. Hedge your bets and go for a Freelander 2....simpler, coil springs, Ford/Peugeot engine...big, roomy, seats fold flat and comfortable ride. More reliable [the only LR the local dealer will sell] and cheaper to run and repair. Only downside is the satnav is impossible to work out....and its not got DAB in the earlier versions...2010.
Probably because the Disco 4 apparently isn't much cop compared to the Disco 3. 😂😂
Hi Lucy, Watching you constantly changing gear, it looks no where near as relaxing to drive as an automatic. It may be fun for short periods of time, but a retrograde step, as most large vehicles are automatic these days.
Looked llike it was a bit of an effort
Sitting in stop/start traffic will soon put her back to an auto box.
A manual transmission on a Land Rover??? Wouldn't see that in the US 😮😅
I much prefer the older land rovers to modern day rubbish. These look like how they should look. The new ones while quite nice and luxurious on the inside, look ugly as anything on the outside, especially as they all come with stupid big wheels and skinny walled tyres. I own a 2023 Land Cruiser prado 150 series, which while new and modern with quite a lot of tech,, still retains a lot of old school styling and physical buttons and switches. Like you I do like the more older, neater and basic looking interiors and exteriors.
Haha, I need to lunge more on my LR4 side step, indeed
Nothing wrong with having a physical ignition key, much harder to steal the car
Well.anything over ten years old are more susceptible to age related routine problems!
Hey Lucy your land rover discovery car can be dressed for weddings you should purchase your very own brand new land rover discovery will you go to the Aston Barclay car auctions and purchase your very own car from auctions and let us see you bidding four your first ever land rover discovery you should attend some car auctions and bid for your own brand new land rover discovery from auction then people will be able to see you walking around the cars and bidding for your first ever land rover discovery from auctions come on Lucy it's time for you too do some
It's needed you are only young once and theirs only you doing these sort of videos and they are very interesting please Lucy keep the you tube videos coming out l love watching you you are a true car caring person
Why don't you think about putting a business plan together and look at starting your very own female car sales centre you would get customers flocking at your feet four loads of four by fours as the floods are due to return and four by four cars can be used as very good recovery vehicles ask Greg from GDB rescue and recovery
….. 57 plate is 16 years old….. great fun though.
The fact you cant get insurance or parts, and the used value is falling like a stone, maybe says an LR isnt a great choice? When the poor reliability is taken into account, anyone needs to be crazy to get one of these.........................
Is this the person ex Philippines blog? Sounds screeching...
Lucy is beautiful indeed ...
If you thought the range rover was a money pit watch this space if the crank does not blow up something eles will
Shame the tax is £695 for 12 months
No good inner-city 2.7 dirty diesel 😱🤷
try a real 4x4
My wife has 275,000 Miles on hers....
😴
another money pit lol
Should you fart in public and ask others to sniff it ? The answer to that question is the same as the answer to yours Lucy
2.7 is a shite engine
No they are rubbish and made in the UK
