Those asking "what's the difference between huskies and malamutes", listen to the video. The only similarity between the two is how they look. Huskies are smaller generally and are built for speed. They are the dog you want in the Iditarod. Malamutes are bigger generally and are built for work and endurance. They are not as energetic as huskies. These are sled dogs that you want pulling heavy loads.
Speaking as somebody who has a husky and whose prof has a malamute...can't quite get how people mix them up. Mutes are huge, and those teddy bear eyes are a dead giveaway. Love them!
He didn’t go from dog to wookie off the bat. He just saw his dog sitting on the passenger seat while he drove and he figures Han could use a co-pilot. Figured it’d be cool if he were this hairy creature. Chewbaka went through hundreds of potential designs before being finalized.
Think they should've made it more clear just how strong you have to be to raise these dogs... if you haven't got what it takes to be a leader, you shouldn't get this dog. If you can't control it when it's younger, you're not gonna stand a chance when it's older and stronger and that's not fair on you or the dog!
They are beautiful dogs, I've never owned one - but my family did have a Samoyed. I know that all sled dogs are notoriously difficult to train and domesticate but the dog is worth the effort, if you can't give the effort, time and attention it deserves then you shouldn't get it. I feel that's true of all dogs..
i have 4 of these beauties, if you ask me this is the greatest dog to EVERYTHING expect being a guard dog. they almost never bark at strangers or other dogs and you can gently pat them once on the head and you just got yourself a new best friend
ADVICE TO PEOPLE THINKING ON BUYING THEIR FIRST ALASKAN MALAMUTE: start training EARLY. both of mine are STUBBORN AS SH*T. Purchase a furminator, you're gonna need it. Be ready to vacuum everyday-every other day. Once you've got them trained, THEY ARE THE BEST DOGS IVE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE. ENJOY.
We had a Malamute/Rottweiler mix. He was the BEST dog we've ever had. Huge (120# in his prime) and powerful, yet playful and relaxed personality. His head was bigger than mine! (We lost him to cancer) He had a Malamute coat, with Rottweiler colors. One blue eye, one brown. He was beautiful. We took him in public constantly. He would just lay down and let kids crawl all over him...so very tolerant of people and other dogs. And he talked all the time. We miss him terribly.
I do the same thing and I live in south Georgia. My mal spends the heat of the day in the A/C but she has her own pool and spends a lot of time in it. Wonderful dogs!
My family raised Malamutes for decades. They are amazing and talkative characters. So here's my advice for you and a word of a caution: these dogs are really strong. Had one that saw a rabbit when we were camping, her long leash was tied to one of those heavy outdoor picnic tables, she jerked that so quick. They love hanging out in the snow, taking naps, and when they shed their winter coat, they love taking naps in sun spots. Full of unique personality. They make amazing cuddle buddies. Many love getting vacuumed with an attachment to get excess fur, it's basically like a spa day for them. Walk them daily, don't keep them cramped up all day. They have mastered the art of stealing your heart. When you respect this intelligent breed, they will loyal for life, and when you love them, they will love you back for life. My grandparents are on their last Malamute so naturally she's treated like a princess.
i dont even want to say how many times ive watched this video, i got my alaskan malamute 1 month ago, and i love her, she is a challenge, but so worth it!!!
My uncle has one. Since Maryland's weather and temperature is determined by the seasons he keeps his malamute with a short cut during the spring and summer due to the rising temperature and than lets the coat grow out come late September for the fall and winter.
Hey Chris, I had a Mal that was 150+ his whole life(except the tape worm incident from eating poop, dirty bugger) and he lived a healthy, happy 12 years. You have some good years left with this little girl.
i had a malamute a long time ago but now i have a wolf hybrid. I live in south Texas and for some reason they both loved to lay in the sun :) These are great family dogs and are gentle but can pack a bite, my old malamute Zeus weighed 145 lbs and killed 2 pitbulls. Great lovable dogs but be ready to brush and vacuum!!!
they are really good dogs, they are pretty good with kids but like all pets you still gotta keep an eye out but other than that they watch over your kids and follow them where ever they go and they are very loyal you wont regret owning one they are great dogs
My Uncle's Malamute was the most amazing dog I've ever met. He never attacked another dog and if he was attacked he'd just hold the dog down until help came. He never EVER barked unless it was play time. He grew up to be 200lbs and his dad was like 230lbs or something. Idk if I got my numbers right, but I know he was heavier then me and I'm 170lbs. May Lucan (Luke) rest in peace.
Only thing you have to really consider also is your climate. if you get a Husky or Malamute, you have to be sure they don't overheat on runs. Also, don't forget another wonderful breed, the Pit Bull. Or Boxer. Both wonderful pets and good athletic partners
We live on Mt. Hood ... Have a four month old , and he's already 70lbs ... They can be much larger than 100lbs ... The Giant Malamute can weigh up to 200lbs . Love this breed , so much fun .. Very large teddy bear ...
Yeah we have double and single coats here in Aus...which helps with grooming and with the heat. It really does help when you have a pool cause they can cool off there but yeah I see what you mean, keeping the sled dog breeds in a hot climate can be tricky but not impossible. Yeah, I'm looking at most of the breeds on Dogs 101, reading breed books and consulting pedigree/purina site. Yeah, I know malamutes are huge dogs which need a firm hand and i've talked to a few breeders about them.
we have an Alaskan malamute named diesel and he's such a wonderful dog and they get on with kids really well, I have a 3 year old brother and the dog is very gentle with him. we even had the dog when my brother was just a baby
I love my Alaskan Malamute Ajax! Just a note though, they can be very stubborn and you should probably shouldn't use a harness because they will take YOU for a walk! Also if where you live you have warm summers you should be sure they aren't outside a lot. Other than that it is definitely worth getting one if you live somewhere cold, and you get to be the cool kids of the neighborhood because they are such pretty dogs!
she is a lot of work, but she's well worth it. You really have to be able to read a dog well, and pick up on the small subtle signs to own a malamute. Someone earlier mentioned, they are one of the most primal dogs you can get, instincts and all. Which is digging, chasing animals, chewing etc. they need a way to get rid of the excess energy or one, or all of these primal instincts WILL prevail, without fail. With exercise, the most intelligent dog, ever, and the cutest! Love mine to death
I really love the sled-dog breeds ie Samoyeds, Pomeranians, Huskies, Malamutes..etc as they have a lovely disposition as well as good looks haha :) If the dog is destructive and aggressive that comes down to bad training, and not enough exercise/toys. When I eventually get a dog i'll make sure it has great training and enough exercise :) If a person cant do that, they shouldnt have a dog in the first place...oh and spending money on food, vet etc.. :)
Easiest way to tell with adult dogs is bulk. Mals are significantly larger/bulkier- big deep chest, shorter legs for pulling super heavy loads. Huskies are slight. It's a lot harder to tell a young mal from a husky as they have a leaner build...in which case look at the ears. Mal ears are widely set and more rounded than a huskies. It's also rare for mals to have blue eyes (considered a fault...and they are linked to eye problems so I think thats a good thing!) but they are common in huskies
I have 2 Malamutes!! My females a big gentle giant, shes an Alaskan Malamute. And I got a male Alaskan Malamute/Inuit Malamute while I was in Anchorage. Got to say, he's the crazy one. LOL!
Hmm, if you have good breeders there then chances are that the dog has adapted via selective breeding so would have a thinner coat and so on, in which case you wouldn't hit those issues that I mentioned. Well done to you, you are doing the sensible thing and checking what's what first :) In that case all that is really left is to consider if you can handle the breed and if your home can handle it as they will get destructive and it's not always through boredom, sometimes simply 'cause they can.
I read through the comments below, some of you had questions about owning a mal if u live in a warmer climate, we live in virginia and it gets hot in summer, and while its not the ideal weather for them, my mal does just fine in the hi temp. BUT we also make sure she has plenty of shade, lots of fresh, cold water available 24/7, and has her very own little pool (haha they love to swim, play etc in the water, esp during summer) which helps A LOT with the heat.
I have a 105 pound female Malamute...and I will tell you that if your not ready, and they decide to run when you holding their leash...they can about pull your arm apart. I have a Siberian Husky also, and Huskies run VERY fast, and are very powerful. Malamute's are slower runners, but are heavy and powerful. My Malamute has yellow eyes, and people are scared of her because she is so wolf like. Most women and children can not handle Malamutes. Some males can get to 140 lbs...thats way too much dog for most people
I know that struggle....I have even had so called professionals that work in dog related fields call my Mals huskies, how can they work/deal with dogs of many breeds on a regular basis and not know the difference?
In agreement with wheelers comment, in my experience mals arent so friendly with other dogs and they tend to be wary of strangers; barking, hovering protectively around family. From the time she was a puppy, my mal had no tolerance of my older male collie. Constantly asserting dominance over him, petty fighting etc. She must be the center of attention! Which is fine bc she never fails to entertain us, and the intelligence of this breed is amazing.
my mal is usually well behaved,if you dont give them plenty of exercise they will eat everything.I cant trust mine off the lead and she does go mental when she sees another dog but when she gets close there is no aggression its all play, she would even lie on her back in front of the other dog.very caring dog and can howl a wee bit when left on her own at bedtime(lonely)......oh and a de-shedding rake is a must (dont buy a cheap one)
my alaskan malamute beau is coming up into her tie to have her season and were thinking of breading her but she is quite jumpy and plays alot so im kind of scaird shed hurt then not on porpes but trying to play what do you think?
I want one of these dogs, either a Husky or Malamute, but I'm in Australia.... But there's a guy in the same area as me that has 2 huskies, they seem happy, they don't look too hot...
@catha86 yes, it can be, they are stubborn, they are a 'real' dog, with real instincts, most malamutes have food aggression and dog aggression, if you are going to get one, i recommend reading and learning about them as much as you can
Wolfie908...7 Mals...Wow....bet you love when they blow their coat. You could stuff a couch! But they are still the best and waaay worth the hair! Funny story...have a friend with 2 Mals and his sister took the hair and put it in her loom and spun it into yarn. She then made him a beautiful fisherman knit sweater. Only 1 problem...if he wore it in the rain....smelled just like wet dog!!
That's because their coat also protects them from the heat as well as the cold, they adapt well, but blow their coat more frequently in warmer climates.
Not necessarily, it's a common myth, if you provide them with shade and water when they go outside, and keep them inside in the AC they do just fine, their thick coats actually protect them a lot from the heat. My Husky/Malmute used to jump in the pool and then would go stand in the sun to cool himself off as he dried.
@obsoletefloppy Yeah I'm aware they are stalkier dogs, but they look very similar especially if you aren't aware of the characteristic differentiations.
Have you ever heard of the Caucasian Shepherd or the kurdish Kegal, I think those are cool dogs too. If I am a really rich guy, I would have five dogs, a Malamute, a Pyrenese, a Newfoundland, a Caucasian Shepherd and finally a Kurdish Kegal I will hire someone to take care of them and we will be a one big happy family. :)
Oh I would love to see it. Tell me where. The 8 year old female I have now is 120# and she will probably be my last Mal. I am 66 now and hoping I will have Maggie a few more years, but after that I promised my kids I would not get another huge dog. The kids have become the parents! It really breaks my heart knowing this, but maybe 70 is a little old to handle a puppy. Since you have 7 you know what I mean. tell me where you posted your video...and thanks!
Love my male malamute Zeus he's 140 lbs of fuzz and cuddles wouldn't trade him for anything!, However I'm glad I moved out of the city taking him to the dog park I would get ridiculed by people for having such a big dog and as soon as he started to play people would go running for them thinking he was vicious.....I actually had a man whip him with his leash because he was sniffing the guys puppy.....That did not go over well, he definitely got a piece of my mind!
Share some info with me...when you say a breeder won't give a Mal to a first timer...do you mean first time dog owner or a first time Mal owner? I would like to own one in the future, but I've been researching the breed for years.
Yeah, but they're sure as hell not going to exercise in it, which is what they absolutely love to do. They can hang out and tolerate the heat, but they're not going to like exercising in the heat. Hah. They are very smart at staying cool though :)
@OverruledDood yeah but i mean golden used to be a hunting dogs and still is but now people bread them for being housedogs.. the same thing can be done to malamutes and huskies. doesn't matter if they are 80% wolf. wolf dont drag right? which mean malamutes can be bread to retrieve and such too.
Yup Aus as in Australia. Strangely enough we have plenty of breeders here, and i've seen a lot of Mallies and Huskies running about and splashing about in pools. No, Im actually doing intensive research on this breed, and I know you shouldn't buy a dog purely on looks. :)
Tuve uno en Costa Rica y es uno de los mejores perros que tenido, son gigantes con una personalidad bonachona y juguetona, lástima que cueste tanto traerlos
Today while at the vets with my yorkie, a guy came in with an Alaskan Malamute. The dog was only 9months old, and already weighed 90lbs. Such a beautiful dog too, wanting everyone to pet it. I think my next dog might be an Alaskan Malamute :D
Alaskan malamutes are verry cool as a pet, they have personality and sometimes do what they want ( wich is cool from my point of wiev ). What i didnt hear about in all the clips with them is that they have hunters blood in them or mine does at least and she cant help herself if she sees a chicken or duck or any kind of bird ,roadants and sometimes bigger prey , she kills it if she is able without a question. She doesent go for a walk without a leash like other dogs cose she`s dangerous :) .
@RashaadFxx10 thanks for recommending! I don't have high prey drive dogs but the husky will start as a puppy!(: Also i will take care good of it ^_^ when i was small i used to have 2 dogs(: and there big ^_^
@mirnaknin I know all about these dogs. my conclusion is I wont be able to get one which makes me sad. but there are atleast 2-3 more dogs I can get. I am thinking of a shetland sheepdog now.
Huskies are smaller and thinner, and they weighs around 25 kilograms. Malamutes weighs around 40 kilograms and more. A malamute is nearly twice bigger than a husky, and more massive, more strong, more insulated from cold climate, more fluffy. People MUST KNOW that both need to run to be happy.
If you look at pictures of the two of them next to each other you'll never confuse the two again. Mal's are gigantic. Huskies are tiny. Mal's never have blue eyes. The Mal's tail always curls over it's back. Huskies can either curl the tail over the back or put it down. Huskies have more energy and are more aggressive. Mal's are more laid back and stubborn.
Love them!
I rescued a female Mally last March. They are the most wonderful loving animals on the planet.
Thank you so very much for doing that ❤
How does one come up with Chewbacca from an Alaskan Malamute?
Schmidty030 idk maybe cause they're all hair lol
They chew and bark (bacca)
They are very talkative
They scream kinda the way Chewy talks
He didn’t go from dog to wookie off the bat. He just saw his dog sitting on the passenger seat while he drove and he figures Han could use a co-pilot. Figured it’d be cool if he were this hairy creature. Chewbaka went through hundreds of potential designs before being finalized.
don't forget that some of them can talk
These dogs can survive during cold weather's!
Talk? U serious? Dogs can’t talk!
@@Donahuekp you saw those videos yet?
They can say I love you
Think they should've made it more clear just how strong you have to be to raise these dogs... if you haven't got what it takes to be a leader, you shouldn't get this dog. If you can't control it when it's younger, you're not gonna stand a chance when it's older and stronger and that's not fair on you or the dog!

I feel that's true of all dogs..
i have 4 of these beauties, if you ask me this is the greatest dog to EVERYTHING expect being a guard dog. they almost never bark at strangers or other dogs and you can gently pat them once on the head and you just got yourself a new best friend
I love Akitas. Best dog I’ve ever known -stubborn and independent which is what made me fall in love with them.
I have been a really! Very big dog lover and puppy lover
since I was 5 years old ❤
I agree with the house turning into a snow globe lol no matter how much you sweep and vaccuum it never ends!
I do the same thing and I live in south Georgia. My mal spends the heat of the day in the A/C but she has her own pool and spends a lot of time in it. Wonderful dogs!
I LOVE Alaskan Malamutes. Life is more cute with a malamute !
I got a giant Alaskan Malamute and a German Shepherd both very fun and extremely smart!!
I Love them!!
Yeah!!! The Akita is my dog and my best friend I could ever have!!! Had Shepherds most of my childhood but not an Akita.
Only thing you have to really consider also is your climate. if you get a Husky or Malamute, you have to be sure they don't overheat on runs. Also, don't forget another wonderful breed, the Pit Bull. Or Boxer. Both wonderful pets and good athletic partners

Well in Adelaide here its pretty temperate. I've seen lots of people with Mals around and other snow dogs (also we have a pool too ;))

Chewbacca's noises are probably sound samples from George Lucas' dog.
nice, my dad used to have a Malamute, Mastiff, Wolf mix..........and he is a little guy of only 5ft 5.
I love my Alaskan Malamute Ajax! Just a note though, they can be very stubborn and you should probably shouldn't use a harness because they will take YOU for a walk! Also if where you live you have warm summers you should be sure they aren't outside a lot.

Absolutely Wonderful Animals, My Family Owned One When I Was A Baby She Protected Me With Her Life! Id LOVE To Own Another Alaskan Malamute Again :)

I was once walking with an acquaintance, then we saw a malamute and he said: Aaaaaaaarrrrrggggggghhhhhh!!!!! A WOLF!!!!!! RUN!!!!!! It was so funny😂

my wolg dog has the same problem whenever he wants to go for a run
I have a canaan dog, kind of like a smaller version of a husky or malamute. He's really easy to handle.
xD I feel u my Grandma was walking my Alaskan malamute and well lets just go with she got pulled
Seriously? I own one of these everybody's like OMG A HUSKY. AND IM LIKE OMG ITS A MALAMUTE
And there eyes are never blue ._.
And mine is gonna weigh about 130 XD
OMG learn to spell!
I know that struggle....I have even had so called professionals that work in dog related fields call my Mals huskies, how can they work/deal with dogs of many breeds on a regular basis and not know the difference?

@TreyMMA Not if you've seen them a couple of times. The malamutes have broader heads, shorter muzzles than Huskies.
i love this dog
Aside from size, what's the difference between these, huskies, akitas, and elkhounds?
Rhodesian ridgeback is probably the best dog for running....actually it's the best, i wish one of them
Aww i love Malamutes. :)
But I live in a tropical country :(
Maybe other lovable breeds..
my mal is usually well behaved,if you dont give them plenty of exercise they will eat everything.I cant trust mine off the lead and she does go mental when she sees another dog but when she gets close there is no aggression its all play, she would even lie on her back in front of the other dog.very caring dog and can howl a wee bit when left on her own at bedtime(lonely)......oh and a de-shedding rake is a must (dont buy a cheap one)

I had Alaskan Malamute her name was tundra and she was the greatest dog ever:)
"it turns your home into a snow globe." XD
Please do a video on the alaksan Klee kai
I want one of these dogs, either a Husky or Malamute, but I'm in Australia.... But there's a guy in the same area as me that has 2 huskies, they seem happy, they don't look too hot...
@catha86 yes, it can be, they are stubborn, they are a 'real' dog, with real instincts, most malamutes have food aggression and dog aggression, if you are going to get one, i recommend reading and learning about them as much as you can

Assumo que Cost Rica tiene un clima tropical no? Si es así, tuvo problemas con el clima tu perro?
That's because their coat also protects them from the heat as well as the cold, they adapt well, but blow their coat more frequently in warmer climates.
Get a Weimaraner or German Shorthaired Pointer for a running partner. They LOVE it!
Can't wait to get ours in two weeks!x x
Is it ok if we were to shave them? I mean like lessen the coat so in warm countries they won't feel hot?
Not necessarily, it's a common myth, if you provide them with shade and water when they go outside, and keep them inside in the AC they do just fine, their thick coats actually protect them a lot from the heat. My Husky/Malmute used to jump in the pool and then would go stand in the sun to cool himself off as he dried.
We named the *dog* "Indiana!"
"I had very fond memories of that dog ..."
@obsoletefloppy Yeah I'm aware they are stalkier dogs, but they look very similar especially if you aren't aware of the characteristic differentiations.
these dogs are amazing! i have one :)
My mal is great! This breed is awesome.
HOW BIG do they get? and out of a siberian husky, a german shepard, and a alaskan malamute whitch one is the biggest?
Oh I would love to see it. Tell me where. The 8 year old female I have now is 120# and she will probably be my last Mal. I am 66 now and hoping I will have
Maggie a few more years, but after that I promised my kids I would not get another huge dog. The kids have become the parents! It really breaks my heart knowing this, but maybe 70 is a little old to handle a puppy. Since you have 7 you know what I mean. tell me where you posted your video...and thanks!
I love malamutes! I'm getting one in April :3
cute dog
Yes!! awesome! You have the same picks as I do! :) so What did you get?
Love my male malamute Zeus he's 140 lbs of fuzz and cuddles wouldn't trade him for anything!, However I'm glad I moved out of the city taking him to the dog park I would get ridiculed by people for having such a big dog and as soon as he started to play people would go running for them thinking he was vicious.....I actually had a man whip him with his leash because he was sniffing the guys puppy.....That did not go over well, he definitely got a piece of my mind!
almika360 ridiculed for having a big dog D:
Share some info with me...when you say a breeder won't give a Mal to a first timer...do you mean first time dog owner or a first time Mal owner? I would like to own one in the future, but I've been researching the breed for years.
Yeah, but they're sure as hell not going to exercise in it, which is what they absolutely love to do. They can hang out and tolerate the heat, but they're not going to like exercising in the heat. Hah. They are very smart at staying cool though :)
@OverruledDood yeah but i mean golden used to be a hunting dogs and still is but now people bread them for being housedogs.. the same thing can be done to malamutes and huskies. doesn't matter if they are 80% wolf. wolf dont drag right? which mean malamutes can be bread to retrieve and such too.
wich looks most like an wolf? Alaskan Malamute or Siberian Husky???
@TreyMMA Not to mention the darker pigmentation of Huskies coats and icy blue eyes. Haha, just felt like putting it out their.
I have a Malamute, but she is mixed with Lab, because one of her ears were never straight up, such as one ear up and the other down.
Yup Aus as in Australia. Strangely enough we have plenty of breeders here, and i've seen a lot of Mallies and Huskies running about and splashing about in pools. No, Im actually doing intensive research on this breed, and I know you shouldn't buy a dog purely on looks. :)
my malamute puppy is Nice,Friendly and they dont howl alot.....And For a young age his heavy...but aside from that Hes a pretty good Puppy
Tuve uno en Costa Rica y es uno de los mejores perros que tenido, son gigantes con una personalidad bonachona y juguetona, lástima que cueste tanto traerlos
I have one i love her to bits
@Blueknightex We have a Four year old malamute and he has been no problem to raise! Only issue is what to do with all the fur XD
Today while at the vets with my yorkie, a guy came in with an Alaskan Malamute. The dog was only 9months old, and already weighed 90lbs. Such a beautiful dog too, wanting everyone to pet it. I think my next dog might be an Alaskan Malamute :D
They look like a husky and a Akita too
Alaskan malamutes are verry cool as a pet, they have personality and sometimes do what they want ( wich is cool from my point of wiev ). What i didnt hear about in all the clips with them is that they have hunters blood in them or mine does at least and she cant help herself if she sees a chicken or duck or any kind of bird ,roadants and sometimes bigger prey , she kills it if she is able without a question. She doesent go for a walk without a leash like other dogs cose she`s dangerous :) .
is it hard to take care of a malmutes?
@RashaadFxx10 thanks for recommending! I don't have high prey drive dogs but the husky will start as a puppy!(: Also i will take care good of it ^_^ when i was small i used to have 2 dogs(: and there big ^_^
Just looks a lot like one, Malamute's are quite a bit larger and were originally bred for a slightly different purpose.
would an alaskan malamute live fine in the uk due to wheather ?
@mirnaknin I know all about these dogs. my conclusion is I wont be able to get one which makes me sad. but there are atleast 2-3 more dogs I can get. I am thinking of a shetland sheepdog now.
Besides the size I still can't tell a difference from husky to malamute😂😂
Huskies are smaller and thinner, and they weighs around 25 kilograms. Malamutes weighs around 40 kilograms and more. A malamute is nearly twice bigger than a husky, and more massive, more strong, more insulated from cold climate, more fluffy.
People MUST KNOW that both need to run to be happy.
Most Alaskan malamutes are fluffier and malamutes don't have blue eyes where as huskies do
If you look at pictures of the two of them next to each other you'll never confuse the two again. Mal's are gigantic. Huskies are tiny. Mal's never have blue eyes. The Mal's tail always curls over it's back. Huskies can either curl the tail over the back or put it down.
Huskies have more energy and are more aggressive. Mal's are more laid back and stubborn.
