The ATV trails are still closed in my part of the world b/c of COVID19 and I've had a bunch of people ask me my thoughts on my ATV and the gear I use, so I thought I'd start with my ATV and some of the mod's I've done to it so far.
Remember there is no such thing as "the best" whatever is best for me or my style of riding doesn't mean it's the best for you or your style, it's all relative. Have an open mind and don't be on any "team" or be so Brand loyal, the truth is pretty much all the ATV manufacturers today make great machines.

Thanks for the video! Congrats on the new addition! I’m married with 2 teens. My wife and I can’t pull them off their ps4’s. (that’s ok right now during the pandemic). We’re from the Toronto area and do the cottage thing. Looking to pick up a Grizzly this fall/winter so love your reviews. I haven’t made it out to the Maritimes yet but we’ll get there eventually. I bought my Grizz new back in 05 and still run it! It's outlasted all my Hondas, Can-Am's, Polaris's and my one and only Kawasaki. I'm down to that Grizz and my Renegade. Awesome review of an awesome machine!

I own an 05 grizzley, its been the best atv I have ever had.
Great job on this. Lots of information here. I had an '05 660 and the same year 708. Great ATVs. I like the Bighorns with the steelies too. Function before fashion! Smart idea with that foam seal on the rear storage too. That whole storage bin could use a re-think from the factory. How's that holding up for keeping the grime out?
hey ! thanks for checking out my video ! those old 660's were tough machines ! and yeah I had aluminum rims on my 2008 grizzly and thy dented easily, so I just kept the steelies for this one. yeah that rear storage bin just doesnt seem like something Yamaha would do... it seems half ass to me. The foam worked amazing ! just a little dust gets in there now, it keeps most of the water out unless I go in a hold deeper than the box, even from cleaning it keeps the water out good. thanks again for watching !
I have seen at least 2 video from Dirt Trax that said the first Grizzy was a 660 that is wrong and I keep asking why Dirt Trax doesn't know that the first Grizzy was in 1998 Grizzy and it's a 600. I have a 1999 Grizzy 600 ,got it brand new the MRSP was $6500 I got it $6000 out the door and it only has 518 miles on it, still running like new. And I also have a 2017 with 708 and a Sportsman XP 1000 that that Dirt Trax made me buy both of them. LOL

Hey Pete ! thanks buddy ! Yeah the Grizzly is one of the better trail/work bikes out there, they dont really have any flaws..... the only "flaw" i guess is it's not as powerful as the CanAm, Polaris or Kawasaki. Saying that, it has plenty of power to get ya down the trail and back home, it will do 65mph or like 110km/hr, it will wheelie no problem.

I just stumbled upon your channel and I've been watching it all morning. The content is great and I hope you keep up the good work. My opinion of the Yamaha Grizzly pretty much parallels yours. I think it has a very comfortable ride, steering geometry it perfect and the cvt is spot on. Mine is a 2018 is 3100 km, it's completely stock and I have a few more complaints but I do love the quad. The power steering could be stronger is slow, technical terrain. The bottom of the front fenders need some extensions because at moderate trail speeds, my entire leg gets wet from water coming off the front tires. Water comes up from the holes in the foot boards and also huts the front of the rear fenders and splashes on my legs. That all said, it's a wonderful atv. I also have the same hand warmers, awesome!
Hey man ! dude you totally hit on a point that I forgot ! how the water splashes up through the floor boards ! that drives me crazy haha my buddy Evan put some home-made small rubber extenders down from the fender and he said it really helped.
I wish I would have mentioned that.... haha maybe at my 5000km review.... I'd hate to get into a bunch of review videos lol
Enjoy your review videos, and appreciate the honesty and transparency within. Yamaha does make a good bike! Back in 07 when I was bike shopping an didn’t know much about them, I didn’t have a chance to try one out before buying my Kawasaki 650i camo. Looking back, I made a good choice, but wished mine had power steering lol :). Take care!

Thanks for your honest review. I've been contemplating buying an ATV but know nothing about them although I have ridden dirt bikes, enduros and street bikes including two Harley Davidsons. At 73 I've decided to quit backpacking and get into overland camping. Having an ATV gives me the option to get deeper into the woods. After seeing an ad in Field & Stream I wanted to know more about the Yamaha Grizzly. I owned two Yamaha street bikes and they were incredibly reliable. I love how you have yours set up: (1) the heated grips and thumb grip, (2) the camo (as a veteran I love camo) (3) the front and rear racks and (4) the large box mounted on your rear rack. I've enjoyed watching you and Joshua on your ATV adventures and hopefully will have some of my own in 2021. Happy Holidays to you and Wendell (love Jack Russell terriers) and be safe.
Hey Alex ! thanks man ! thats great you are getting into ATV'ing, it really lets you get out and explore further away places. The Grizzly is a very solid trail machine, it does everything well, plus the belt/clutching is second to none, Very smooth and they have a 10 year belt warranty, which is crazy.
Yep I have videos on all those mod's, the hand warmers are Heat Demon dual zone. the rear storage box is OEM Yamaha (they have a bigger side now, which I sort of wished I had) Yeah Ol Wendell comes with me on most of my trips, he loves the woods and chasing squirrels haha Josh has a great channel, some really good videos and he's just a great guy, super nice (and he's also a Military guy, so I know you'd like that haha) Cheers man !
Thanks for the video! Your comment about Yamaha not changing things much is a good point. They change what they have to, but leave alone what's working. The classic example of this is the Volkswagen Beetle. It barely changed from 1960 into the 1970s.

Great vid ! I have an 09 grizzly 550 I bought as a leftover in Jan of 2010 . The grizzly has been bullet proof and reliable, I trail ride and work it quite a bit year round.

I had a stick come through my fender on my old 14' Arctic Cat 700. It just happens when you clock enough miles/KMs. Love your videos! Cheers from Western Oregon, USA!

Great review bud! I have a 2008 Grizzly 660 camo with 17,000 km and added the Mudlite tires last year. I live in Newfoundland and do a lot of moose hunting and no joke I put that thing everywhere and most times with a quarter of moose strapped to the front and back crossing bogs, water, and crawling over rocks. Lock the 4WD and put it in low gear that thing is a monster. Would not buy anything else when it comes to an atv. I call it the Toyota tundra of the ATV world lol. Keep up the good work Cheers!
Hey Buddy !!! thats awesome to hear, all though I'm not a HUGE fan of the Mud Lite tires for my terrain, I bet they would work Super good in the mossy, bog type of terrain you use them for in NL, probably a perfect tire for you !

Very informative video. I personally own a 2015 Outlander xt. It's an awsome machine also. 4000 miles without a single hiccup. Just put bighorn 2.0 tires on it and absolutely love them.
Hey Randy ! thanks man ! and thats awesome to hear ! I know a few Can Am riders who have had great luck too ! my buddy Andre has like 17,000km on his Renegade (he has changed quite a few parts, but thats gonna happen with that many km) and thats great ! the 2.0's hook up as good as the 1.0's I just don't find they last as long or are as puncture resistant. Hopefully they work great for you though.

Good review man ! I couldn't believe that gap in the rear storage when I got mine. I thought they messed up and had it assembled wrong. I'm sure they could have done a better job waterproofing it...But not a huge deal breaker...

Hey ! those Kodiak's are supposed to be nice rigs, I haven't got a chance to ride a new one, just the older 450's and stuff. always very tough machine.
I have a 2007 Camo Grizz it hides the wear a lot better ..mine has 2300 km ... Love it , Replace wheel bearings only one time in 13 yrs, and swapped antifreeze with high end Arctic Cool . Helped a lot as i use my grizz to pull my tow behind mower . It mostly just keeps my RZR company in the shed ...

Great vid, thanks. Just got a 2009 kodiak 450 to get back on the trails. A senior machine ,carburated and dependable . Some of the features still the same . Now i all need is a buddy. Extra steak for Wendall lol. take care!!!
Hey man ! seriously those Kodiak 450's are a SUPER reliable bike ! I remember my brother had a Kodiak 400 (might have been back in 2002) but I've literally never came across a bike that started better than it, it was Legit as soon as you pressed the start button, the motor was on haha it didn't even roll over. always worked perfect. You will love that bike, congrats !

You're right, it's not a Polaris, its reliable ! hahahaha jk man, I actually grew up on Kawasaki dirt bikes, Yamaha and Honda ATV's.
Great review, thanks. I have exactly the same machine - even in camo. Just installed some Bighorn 3.0 and was wondering what air pressure you put in yours? I'm going to check into your modifications a little closer as I also notice my fan running quite a bit.
Hey ! Congrats on the bike ! I run between 3-5lb in my tires. lower pressure will suck up more smaller bumps, and give more grip. Yeah the EHS Tuner can help with that fan being on and engine running hot.

Hey, yeah Yamaha got them to make the motors from 2016,17,18 then went back with the trusty Yamaha 686cc motor in 2019. they had some issues with the subaru 708's burning oil..... mine's been good, and I hope I dont have any issues.

I’ve got a 2007 Griz 700. Bought it new. I live in the Black Hills of SD. Many trail miles and snow plowing. Still runs and looks like new.

Both of my floorboards are cracked from sticks. I recently added floorboard skid plates to prevent further damage. Great review. Agree about the 1.0 Bighorns.
Ohhh wow no way, thats crazy, maybe Yamaha cheaped out a bit on the floor boards, I thought mine was just a "1 off" type thing.... but both of your's are cracked....

I heard a guy talking about the reason they left that gap on the back storage cell was for air flow. They new it was going to get wet so they figured you could put your tow straps and whatever else you end up using in there after you get them all nasty so you don’t dirty up your dry bags/ dry storage. Makes sense to me really.
Hey man, that could be true for sure, but why did they put a plug in the drain? why not just keep it open so it cleans out haha Personally I think that sounds like a convenient excuse.... Yamaha has the ability to make it waterproof so it doesn't fill up with stuff. My guess is it comes down to Cost.... like everything haha

Hey Buddy, Yep I made a video on how to take the switch apart and add the grease. It fixed my issue and it never came back.

I have a 2016 Polaris Sportsman 850 SP now....
I used to have a 2004 Grizzly 660 in blue. Was a beautiful machine and had ZERO issues with it.
I kind of wish I had gone with the grizz again. I'm constantly afraid of breaking down on the polaris. It has some more power... but you pay for that power.... a couple hours riding and you are looking for a gas station again.
I mostly went with the 850 for the twin cylinder engine. As I'm no lightweight myself and I use it for plowing.
I absolutely LOVE yamahas 4x4 system with the push buttons and the slider. I like having control over those systems. Yamahas Ultramatic CVT is by far the best in the business.
I often regret not getting another grizz...
But I can 100% tell you this for sure... the Day Yamaha starts putting their Vtwin engine from their SxS division in their 4x4 atvs, ill be at the dealership with my Pink slip looking for a trade!!
Hey buddy ! Those Popo Sportsmans are a nice machine too but I hear ya on the maintenance and stuff.... I always have no worries that my machine will start and get me out of the woods. it could use an upgrade on the motor for sure and if they put a twin in the Grizzly, I might go in and get a new one too !! hahaha
The Grizzly is definitely a solid unit!

17 here and have No problems, no oil burning. I'm convinced many people mis use there machines then complain after something goes wrong.
Hey!! Yeah I think for the most part you are correct. but I have heard some cases of guys taking good care of them, then having smoking issues, it's weird. but I personally dont know any.
Great review, I am thinking of buying either the armour Grey or Yamaha blue. Have you ever doubled on the machine? I don’t plan to do it very often, but wondering if you’ve ever tried with the box you have
Hey ! yes I have doubled, I take the wife from time to time, she's fairly light (110lb) and I have no issues. if your wife is heavier you can always jack up the springs in the back when you double someone.
if you plan on doubling getting a rear seat is a better option that my box. Thanks for watching !

dank shots 420, I’ve got a 2009 Honda Foreman and it’s been unbelievably reliable and if the battery dies you can pull a cover and pull start it. Important when your by yourself in remote areas in the Rocky Mountains. It won’t win any power or ride awards but I love it. Hope yours treats you well

I love the idea of having a secondary start (pull cord) but as the motors get bigger those are going away. I keep a battery pack which allows me to jump start my bike multiple times, just so I dont get stuck out there with a dead battery.
Considering a used grizzly vs nearly new 570 sportsman right now. Looks of the newer sportsman appeal to me but I’m slowly leaning towards grizzly for power and reliability.

Hey Anthony ! we'll thats a hard choice, I've never owned or driven a 570 Popo but from what I'm told the power is close to the 700 Grizzly. (Dirt Trax TV mentioned it in their latest video reviewing the Grizzly XTR) so maybe check that video out.
As far as Reliability, I think it's hard to beat Japanese machines, just my opinion though.
I know people who have had good luck with Polaris and Can Am but I know so many more that run the hell out of their Honda/Yamaha and it keeps going.
Between those two machines it would depend on Your budget, the Year, the shape and how many miles are on the Yamaha vs the Polaris. Do your research and figure out what's best for you.
I have the 2015 Polaris sportsman 570. It’s my wife’s machine. I run it right alone with the 2007 grizzly 700. Both great machines. Power steering is better on the sportsman. Power is about the same.

Hey there, great video. I have a 2018 700 Grizzly SE. I had the oil consumption issue and TSB done end of 2019. At first, dealer said everything was fine until they got the TSB out. 🤷♂️

I'm in the market for a used grizzly and was wondering if there is a year range you would recommend? I've heard a few people say to avoid the 708, but it seems like you've had good luck with it.
Hey man ! thanks a lot ! Yeah I havent had a moments issue with my 708 but I know some people have (quite a few actually) but no one I know personally so I'm not sure exactly how their machines were treated. Saying all of that, and I had my choice well I would get a Grizzly with the 686cc Yamaha motor just for pure piece of mind, it's always in the back of my head that mine may have a smoking/oil consumption issues, so I normally tell people to try and find one years excluding 2016,17,18.

I think it has a lot to do with how you treat your bike too. My Arctic Cat is a 2005 and still runs like a champ. I dont beat the hell out of it and make sure the maintenance is always done and it still runs strong. A buddy I ride with has the same Grizzly you do and hes the same way with his machine. They are solid bikes!

Just put a deposit on a 2021 Grizzly eps. Awesome trail riding bikes for sure. Reliability and the ultramatic transmission are 2 big pluses.
Hey man ! congrats on the new machine ! Yeah the Grizzly is probably the best trail riding machine out there, great low end power, decent top end power, the best belt drive in the game, which I prefer over a transmission like in the Hondas, great ground clearance, just an all around good machine.

Hey man ! I ordered direct from EHS (it's in the US, so I had to pay duty at the border) and it was very easy to istall, I have a video on it on my channel. I think its EHS tuner install, Sway bar and AIS delete mod. Something like that.

I have the same year machine as you, my biggest complaint with my grizzly coming from a king quad was the foot well is a bit tight, other than that I love everything about it . I use it to skid wood off my woodlot and and then rip trails she's a beauty👍

Hey man, another great video, always enjoy watching. My brother just picked up a 2019 700 Grizzly 700 SE and he’s super happy with it. I was curious what pressure you’re running the bighorns at? I picked up a new set a g. Bourque and was told to run them at a minimum of 10 psi. I noticed on my first ride they seemed a little rough.
Hey Rob ! thanks man, glad you liked the video ! 10 PSI ?!?! oh man thats crazy ! I run mine between 3-5 PSI, always have. they are super smooth then. My buddy Evan runs his at 4 PSI.
I should say in the winter I run them a little lower 3 PSI and the summer around 4-5 PSI
@@Maritimer thanks for the reply, I’ve dropped them down a couple pounds but might take them further, not sure why they told me to keep the pressure that high though. I could see maybe having a higher pressure on a side by side.
@@robertsrandomreviews6516 Yeah ! a SXS needs a bit more pressure but the Big Horns are a rugged tire and can basically run flat on a ATV. drop them to 5lb and you'll probably like them a lot more.

@ SCOTIAN - I own a Yamaha Viking and a Can Am Defender, first thing I done was removed the visco and put in a torque locker. I didn’t buy the XTR , I got the HD10 DPS base model. I will say it’s a beast and so far so good. My Viking has 2700 miles (2014) model and I don’t have any thing bad to say. I have had to replace the cooling fan and that’s it. I use it to hunt and don’t do deep muddling.
I Love everything about my 2018 Sportsman XP 1000 but AWD works perfectly and I have 2 Grizzy so I have one 2017 has different lock.
Another great video. I have actually had 2 or 3 large sticks come up through the foot well. I think every time was going through a water hole.

It never cracked the plastic. They basically pushed through the holes in the foot well. Luckily I was able to remove the large sticks and push the plastic back in place every time.

Hey ! thanks Chris ! Appreciate it man. Grizzly is a great all around machine, keep up with the oil changes and clean the air filter and you shouldn't have any issues. Also I have a video on greasing the wheel bearings, you could check that out, ATV's only come with assembly grease in the bearings so they tend to wear out, I greased mine when I got it, and now has around 3300km and bearings are good. @@Maritimer any advice on a plow? The guy at the dealership was pretty set on a Warn plow with pulley system. I haven't done any research yet but would like to hear your thoughts. Keep up the good work here, great video.
Hey ! I haven't owned a plow for my ATV, I like a snow blower better but thats just personal preference. But I asked my buddy Evan and he had the Moose plow, he loved it, he said it was super beefy and cleaner looking. I saw him plow with it and it worked really good, I was impressed with how much snow the ATV could move. So maybe just do some research and see which one would be best for you.

I have a 2009 grizzly 700 camo pattern I added wheel spacers, winch my really only complaint is on the 09 that there is no secondary start (pull OR kick). Never needed secondary start yet but it would be nice to have.
Hey man ! I know about the secondary start, and I actually have a video on that coming, just need to edit it. I bring a power-bank jump starter with me on my trips, I used it to jump start a F250 in -25C winter, worked great so it should start a ATV multiple times.

Hey buddy ! man I feel you ! and I think if Yamaha came out with a Vtwin they would steal a lot of business from Polaris and Can am, people want the power and are willing to sacrifice reliability for it, but if Yamaha makes a new Grizzly with a vtwin you know it will be reliable, and I think would sell like hot cakes. I like the Outlander, if I was to buy Can Am thats what I would get, I don't care much for the Renegade.

Hey brian ! yeah not many 2-up machines out there is there? Can Am and Polaris ? I think if you plan on taking a passenger a lot, there is no better way than with a SXS. Plus like you said it would help ya with your work, having that box on back helps.

All nice machines ! my brother has the Teryx and loves it, it seems to be built good ! and amazing amount of storage stops. My father Had a Teryx and now has the Pioneer 1K it's also super nice !! I wouldn't get the Viking if it only has a single cylinder engine, it's just too gutless... do they have that parallel twin motor in it now?

I'm trying to decide between the Grizzly and a Sportsman and would love your opinion on how they compare? I plan on mainly trail riding in the mountains in western Canada, so their ability to climb without going over backwards is important. ;) lol. I also plan on doing a lot of 2 up riding and am curious if its necessary to buy a specific 2 up machine (I know Yamaha doesn't make a 2 up).....other than for legal reasons, or what 2 up machine would you recommend? Hey !! we'll like you said: you plan on doing a lot of two up riding, then I'd probably recommend a really propper 2-up machine, I know Polaris makes them, they are longer and properly place the passengers weight in front of the rear wheel, unlike a machine not designed for a second rider (the grizzly) so ther eis less chance of flipping backwards.
Both machines are good, I'd probably give the smoother ride to the Polaris and give the reliability to Yamaha. but you cant go wrong with either machine.
I own a 2008 just like the one you used to have. I really can relate to your video and appreciate your thoughts. My 08 has 17,500 miles on it. I just replaced the stater, both rear axles and did standard oil and antifreeze. Is there anything else you might tell me to do for extended maintenance?
You mentioned a belt on your video. Should I be thinking about it and or anything else?

Hey ! wow thats awesome ! You've had good luck with your 2008 ! Ahhh yeah at 17,000 miles, I'd probably take a look at the belt, i'm guessing it's fine but it's worth a look for sure.

I have 30 inch CST Sludgehammers on my 2020 Grizzly 700 with stock clutch and exhaust and it makes for a perfect mud bike. Keep in mind I do want the upgrades for more low end power. I can get through just about anything I need or want to get through. I have n2deep snorkels and 2.5 inch wheels spacers. I still had no problem getting my bike up to 50 mph with this setup and have had no problems with the belt at all. Overall Grizzly is the way to go if you want reliability with the old fashion but clean atv look!

Nice review. I was showing my father the video. His has a 2017 as well with 58,000 km on it. 2-3 trips a week of 250-450 km/trip.

He just bought a second 700 as a backup because of the delays at the shop due to COVID. It’s all recreational for him. He lives in a small town so he can pretty much go where he likes. Most trips are road shoulders. He doesn’t play in the mud too much

I have a 2017 with the 708 what helped the most with the heat was I was the first to added a super big radiator and I was on Facebook and lot of people got the bigger radiator after see mine and seeing my videos on my channel.

My 2005 Kodiak 450 looks brand new and runs just as good as the day I bought it, but it only have about 1600 miles on it and kept in the garage unless I go hunting or the kids ride it around the yard. It would out climb my friends 2008 Honda rubicon all day, every day. Buying a 2022 Grizzly 700 EPS next week and a Grizzly 90 for my 10 year old. I anticipate that it will last 20+ years if I take care of it like my Kodiak.

Haha, must be....Can Am! I have a 650XT and I really like it, but my son's Brute Force 750i is smooth as silk from a dead stop. My Can Am is super jerky, once you're underway it's fine. The Kawasaki is better built and the 750 is a beast. But, I've grown happy with the Can Am. The Grizzly is really a nice ATV.
Hey Buddy ! Yep you said it perfectly, the Can Am's are a bit jerky at slow speed/taking off, but once going they would be a smooth as anything else.... I probably should have mentioned it. I love the Brute Forces !!! (Except for the looks, I find them ugly LOL) but the power and they seem to be built good ! Kawi makes a good machine.

Yeah I hear ya, it's kind of a stupid design, i'm sure the Can Am riders would love it if they put in a real locking front diff. but there is good and bad with everything ! You guys have that beauty vtwin sound and power haha

Some mods:
Wrap the quad, (to save your plastics)
Rear winch
Elka Suspension
Front and rear bumper
LED light bar
Brighter reverse lights.
Fold up prune saw
Also some other mods
change the spring or weights in the CVT
And add some weights in the wet clutch for more bite on the clutch, less slippage.

I bought my kingquad in late September 2019 and i already have 4000km on it! Man, you got to get riding... i am thinking about removing the sway bar as well on my 750, i think it will make a difference off roading. Thanks for sharing and have fun!

@@jessecameron7268 Yes i did removed the swaybar and it is interesting to see the difference when offroading. A little different when turning at high speeds but not dangerous. Where it shines is going over obstacles or softer terrain, the articulation of the rear suspension is maximized and offers greater traction. It even made the quad more fun to ride giving a plush feel on the trails. Unless you are a fan of trails only, the swaybar removal will definitely be at your advantage. Hey Andy ! We'll I bought mine new in 2017 I added on 26" big horn tires, the storage box, heat demon hand/thumb warmers (which I installed everything myself) but after tax and fee's it ended up being close to 15k. I will warn you about the 708cc motor, do some research on them, ask the owner if it burns any oil or has had the top end rebuilt by Yamaha.... some of them have issues. I like the 686 motor better.

I hate where they put the 12v plug and key though. The key should be up by the gauge cluster and the 12v plug should be by the steering column. I use mine the keep my Garmin plugged into while I'm riding (because it eats batteries like dog on a steak), so it definitely wouldn't work for me.

Installing an extra one near the steering column or in the storage box would be easy enough to do too I guess.

I have the grizzly and Kodiak 2018 both in 700 . They are same only thing different is the Kodiak is lower , and I love them both for the way they are built and perform. But that’s me been a Yamaha guy since my first motorcycle the yz 250 back in the early 70’s
Hey Lyle ! right on man, yep the Kodik is a nice machine too, it's a little more of a utility machine. does yours have the sealed rear brake? I had that on an older Kawasai and it always worked great.

Hey ! yes they are. the BH offer great traction in pretty much all conditions (except maybe really deep mud) and they suck up a LOT of the smaller bumps so they offer a smooth ride.

I'm a big Honda fan too, it's hard for me to knock them, they build such a reliable machine BUT saying that, they are SO far behind in the ATV world.... even the new 520 Rubicon isn't close to a Grizzly. The closest they had was the Rincon 680 but the power wasn't there.... they were a super smooth ride though (My father owned one, he now has the Pioneer 1000 SXS). (My Motorcycle is a Honda, so I'm not a hater haha)
My buddy Evan went from the 680 Rincon to a Grizzly and he agree'd there wasn't much comparison.

12000 on the 09 grizzly not 1200,
