There's a big reason why this happens. The "modern" look that you're seeing is opt in, customized stuff defined by the App, not the OS. When it freezes (as in, the application stops responding to messages being pushed by the OS, such as drag, click for 4 seconds), the OS knows that the application cannot offer the capabilities to the user to do anything, such as exit. Therefore, the OS steps in and renders the default borders which offers OS level capabilities to terminate, rather then application capabilities. Of course, remember that Windows is super backwards compatible, so some stuff, like the default borders and such can NEVER change, like ever. It's up to the application to define the non-default behaviours. When this stops working, the OS just steps in and shows the default behaviour to allow the user to exit a non-response app

Ever since Microsoft got rid of their QA/QC teams, W10 has been a nightmare to deal with. Every update breaks something. EVERY. UPDATE. those problems are settings that you can adjust. Windows does not just update without warning, you probably got the warning before and simply forgot about it. Windows will go several days after the waring before it forces the issue. Some updates are not avoidable if you have it set to check for updates on its own. Point is, your situation is preventable just by going into the settings and making the proper changes.

Microsoft needs to start from the ground up and build a new version of Windows. Windows is built upon the old Windows NT backbone which is over 20 years old. They just keep modifying the old system and updating it. There's a lot of legacy crap in the background and lots of un necessary services and invisible crap bogging down Windows. They just need to make Windows have only what is needed to run your software running in the background.

List of win 10 derps and why I'm using win7 as main while waiting for win10 to reach beta. It's surprising that these things are still missing. Win7 naturally has all of these in perfect working condition. In no particular order:
    1. Start menu pin whatever you want like shortcuts. Copy any of the shortcuts to any place on desktop or in other folders.
    2. Freely reorganize pinned task bar shortcuts - like windows folders within win explorer shortcut on the taskbar.
    3. Recently used folders automatically populate the recent list- like win7 did. As soon as you open a file in a folder X, folder X immediately populates the recent folders on the right click dialog of the windows explorer shortcut.
    4. Simple to disable, never-bother-me-again as long as I don't explicitly tell you otherwise - kind of updates.

I swear some machines I setup on IP address ports have later changed back to a WSD port. I'm assuming an update did that & I know other brand printers have been setup on WSD ports as well so don't think it's an HP only thing with W10. I have found in Network sharing center (advanced sharing settings) unchecking the Turn on automatic setup of network devices helps, or so far it has.

Now, they have inexplicably turned it into a NINE-STEP PROCESS. Click Start, click Power, hold down Shift, click Restart, click on Advanced, click on Troubleshooting, click on Startup Settings, click Exit, and then when the computer restarts you have to hit 4. Compared to just hitting F8 on W-7. That is the most astonishingly stupid and infuriating change in my opinion.

I am about done with it. One of the final nails in the coffin was about Dec 2019 after a feature update. I was in the long process of moving and disconnected my internet. Everything worked fine for months. I made NO changes. Then after about three months of being offline, I noticed very basic Windows functions like Photos not working etc. It got to the point where nothing would work whatsoever. I duginto a bit and found out that Windows had recently decided to make all of their basic functions, individual apps. Meaning, if you didn't log into windows store in X amount of time, they would lock up as some sort of anti piracy measure or something. It also started crashing, which wiped my Steam credentials too. So in order for me to use my PC at all, that worked fine for months and had zero changes, I had to unhook it all and take my e tire tower and monitor etc a the way to my folks house to plug into their Ethernet since I don't have wireless. Was logged in for like two seconds and bam everything worked fine. I shutdown, unplugged, and lugged it all the way back home.
Besides believing it to be really lame, especially considering many people don't have access to broadband at all or at least very limited access, I started wondering why they would do that. Then it dawned on me! It was to create the appearance that MS Store actually gets traffic. It is clear it sucks, so I'm sure it was/is hard to get devs to Dev for it(verified). Just try using one of their 3rd party Apps, yuck! The web version of them is almost always way better.
Then about a year ago, I was having issues with mixed reality portal installing (turned out the update you needed to have installed to allow that to work kept crashing during it's install, so it wasn't up to date enough to DL the "App". While I was trying to figure that out, I ended up in the "DL history" of MS Store, where I found an alarming sight. There were PAGES AND PAGES of "recently purchased" and "recently updated" apps on that list that I NEVER installed ever. And some were the ones that they always install during a fresh install(Candy crush, etc), but I uninstalled years ago. It had specific days for these "purchases" (all free games) many of which were thinks like paint, photos, etc and almost all of them I never even looked at. I. fa it had months worth of "purchases" that supposedly happened while my PC was taken apart and packed up for the final move, so I know there is no way it even happened by accident.
I knew then that I was right about them trying to inflate their Store traffic and usage. THEN!!! Not but a few months later, I hear the announcement that Android Apps will be sold on MS Store..... So @google you may wanna take another look at any data they showed you.

Just the other day, Windows updated (it took a while and it was constantly interrupted by CPU fan errors, a small issue I'm too lazy to fix) and the result was that my entire goddamn graphics driver was uninstalled, making it run like absolute crap until I reinstalled it.
On top of that, it reset a bunch of my settings so I had to go to set those again. Additionally, they also removed the sleep button from my power menu.
Cherry on the cake? My chopstick from my breakfast fell on the floor during this whole ordeal.
    Thanks, Windows.

If you have gamepass with ea acess it took me 6hr to get it too work.
You need xbox app to connect with ea desktop app to run same time same account but link a ea account to your xbl account.
Also if you install games via the xbox app the game will create a heavy encripted portion on your drive that blocks all changes even a simple 3rd party signn in page will make it freak out and close the game.
if you try to modify anything it will erease/replace the data.
i looked into this they are using the xbox version of games on pc. so the portian is a virtual xbox one drive.
    try it out

I use my firewall to block updates since Microsoft can't be trusted. They also have never fixed the file explorer bug where if you remove a USB device the left side pane is reset. And they added a new bug where drag and drop on the left is broken.

timmy i actually use those tabs.... in the start i move all my games there and overclocking utilities that dont actually install so i dont have a cluttered desktop. i turn off suggestions and most to all other features i dont need on for a slight gitty up on lder pcs that dont have an ssd or anything it actually does help turning aero and all that off in that situation.

My most hated thing is when sound randomly stops working onboard Aux
No fix. Just reinstall. Drivers don't help.
This is why USB headsets are the best.
It's rare but happens like 5% of the time and that's too damn high.
I am a builder so I test sound before it goes out the door. And sometimes it really just stops working.

...idk, I used to have pretty decent luck with moving W7 drives between machines, too.

Do you mean external hard drives? With 7 if you popped the hard drive containing the boot partition out of one brand of laptop and into another you were pretty much guaranteed to experience a blue screen.

If you don't update your computer it won't go to sleep by itself. It's stupidest thing ever and it drives me nuts.

Open Shell is classic shell replacement as it's no longer maintained
for windows updates get windows 10 Pro and use gpedit to set it to 150 days delay on feature updates (pick semi-annual channel) and 20 days delay on normal updates
This makes Sure You get well tested beta updates (sorry I mean "" release"" updates) before your pc or customer PCs gets the update (as ms pulls updates when they start destroying windows installs or making the printer stop Working)

This is why I still run Windows XP...in my VM to play old games. Yeah, I'm suffering through Windows 10 like most people.
