The blame is the BAD HP printer driver, not the Windows updates. If the HP DRIVER was written according to the advisement Microsoft voluntarily provides to developers, Windows updates would apply without issue. HP stands for Horrible Products. Love your videos! Great to see new content from you!

I'm sure you're already aware of this so this is more for other people... A good rule of thumb when encountering a BSOD is to first update drivers, and whatever you're doing at the time of the blue screen occurrence can be a good indicator of what to update (along with the specific stop code). The only exception might be if a failing harddrive is the suspected culprit, in which case data recovery should probably take priority.

Normally I agree with you. However a February 2021 and then a March update made it worse caused blue screens on a bunch of printers Sharp/Kyocera/HP and Certain Brother Models. Unfortunately our biggest client has Sharp and Kyocera printers. In general printers suck. They did re-release the March CU update on the 3/21 and rolled that into the April update.

@@JonathanGray89 What I think happened is MS tried to convert the Spooler to a Windows Store type APP. Like Calculator before it was converted to Windows Store App it was an easy way to bypass security as it had access to both System Reserved Memory and CPU at the same time. The problem is HP , Some Brothers, Sharp, and Kyocera do not write push to print drivers. Ever had issues with a printer working over Citrix/RDP it is because it is not a push to print driver. To make thing more confusing the abbreviation for Push to Print is PNP.

@@thepoliticalstartrek Yep. My workplace just went through that and I was rolling back dozens of computers because we use Kyocera and Ricoh printers. We tried enabling "direct printing" as one of our guys thought that to fix the issue, but it didn't for us. I think it was the KB ending in 0802. A couple weeks later, MS released 1567 as an OPTIONAL update which really made me angry as it meant I had to manually install it on every single computer, and I had to pull the update from the catalog as the majority of them didn't even show the update was available. Luckily in April, the important update that ends in 1330 appears to have resolved the issue. It was a nightmare to say the least.

@@MaxDad7 Yeah might have another one in the works. All my Dell systems with 10 started getting printer driver errors on the HPs and the Print to PDF. You can't even re-install Print to PDF when this happens. However, you can re-install the HP drivers.

Holy crap. I used that exact printer forever. HP Designjet 500 with a 24" Roll. I'm in "construction design" and have been in this since the early 90s. We used to have pen plotters that would literally draw the lines and the paper would go back and forth back and forth back and forth- quite hypnotic to watch. Some honest advice for your client- that carriage and cable will eventually wear out. When it does, it's not worth fixing when you can get a faster/more compact/quieter/way more modern os compatible/cheaper to operate Epson T3170 (24" roll color printer) for a grand now (Or something similar- the fact that the 500 has lasted this long suggests very light but regular use so he doesn't need a heavy commercial grade large format printer). *Honestly, I would recommend doing that while the Designjet 500 still works and can be sold/mothballed as a backup* (make sure to remove all ink and clean before though- already went through that problem with an improperly mothballed Designjet 1050 I had to use after the 500 was worn out- lots of cotton balls and rubbing alcohol later...). That way you can just let Windows update. Oh, and F that other guy for a 100% markup on a prebuilt gaming PC from Best Buy. Jeezers.

I actually encountered this issue at my place of employment a couple of months ago. I figured out which update was causing the issue, but Windows wouldn't let me uninstall it (of course). Since the affected PCs had very little on them and we couldn't wait for a fix, I just reformatted them and reinstalled the printers and that got around the issue. Microsoft has since patched the update (and then had to patch the patch lol).
Windows updates are the bane of my existence.

I just changed a customer's laptop from a HDD to SSD. I do a fresh install vs moving everything over as it runs cleaner. Got all the keys for the software before the move. That went over fine. Customer uses Sticky Notes and wanted them moved over without having a backup. Did a backup anyways just to be safe. While making it into notepad for ease of use I noticed that a lot of them were the same. There was a bunch open on the desktop when I first booted. I asked her and she thought that when you closed them they were gone forever. 🤦🏻‍♂️
She was happy to learn that they didn't disappear. Then asked me to get rid of the duplicates for her. There were countless notes. That took a few hours to sift through.

You can also defer the updates for up to 6 months(from what I remember). This gives your PC time before a bug is found and they "unlist"(the KB is kept but disabled) the update.
It's then subsequently patched/fixed and given a new KB article+update.

I ran into something similar when my windows would not let me even boot into safe mode. Never gave me the option in any of the rescue steps. Very problematic. I have a B550 and moved my Rx 570 gpu from the primary x16 slot to the secondary x16 slot (which runs at x4) and the AMD driver would load and then continuously loop for some reason and crash my computer. The system crashed before i could even do anything in windows. Pretty crazy problem. Doesn't matter if there are one or two gpus in the system, if i try to use that secondary gpu as the primary monitor, windows crashes. The basic microsoft video driver works just fine. I don't do much gaming on it so i have some time to find a solution.

2 Annoying things about windows 10 in situations like this.
1)The F8 option to boot into safe mode, last know good config... Etc is disabled by default and the only way to get to these options are to allow the PC to fail booting multiple times witch probably isn't good if windows is already borked. You can enable the F8 button option at boot and it really should be the other way around you need to disable it.
    2) in previous versions of windows when you booted into safe mode it listed on screen what windows was atteming to load and could show you where it got stuck rather then getting a blue screen with a generic message or just a small clicle loading icon that never loads. Multiple times with win 7 desktops that failed to boot I was able to fix by looking at where it got stuck bitting into safe mode. With windows 10 I have had very little luck and have just reloaded the system cleanly.

I was thinking the same thing. If the programs or equivalents were available. The amount of time it would take to change ones workflow, would be less painful in the long run than having to keep dealing with windows and it's nonsense. Especially with aging hardware. It is one of the reasons I ditched windows after a year of hell. About a year and a half ago.
Linux isn't perfect (I use mint), though it is getting better, but after all the issues with windows, it got to the tipping point that I had less issues with linux. Steep learning curve. But worth it. And I'm not a tech wizard. But at the same time I'm not clueless either.

You can't disable Windows updates but you could hold off Windows updates until they threaten to in support and then you can go in and break the windows update with admin rights and then boom. My friends still running One of the earlier versions of Windows 10.

Macrium: good. Veeam Endpoint Backup: Better
DJ500: Use driver version 5.10, not the newer 5.32. HP doesn't like supporting old plotters on new operating systems. That's the most stable driver I've found.

download stopupdates10 from majorgeek, it will block updates for a while because windows finds a war to re enable them later down the line. I'm still on 1809 because of the update fiasco back then. Create a local administrative user, way less headache if something happens to your microsoft account.
