There's a reason why there was a warning why you should not update the bios to that version if you have a pinnacle ridge cpu (ryzen 2000 series) because the latest bios removes support for those cpus so it can add ryzen 5000 support, try a ryzen 3000 cpu (not apu since their based on pinnacle ridge) and see if it posts with that

this^^^. also in defense of the board there are a lot of boards from other brands that dont have flashback or dual bios either. I own 2 steel legend boards and i absolutely love them. Also i always make sure my board is going to support the cpu i buy b4 i buy them and i don't flash any bios that the support page warns you against. I feel like people would have issue's a lot less of the time if they just did their due diligence and bought compatible parts and didnt try to install the wrong bio's updates for.
I'm not arguing against extra features like flashback or dual bios im just saying its not just an ASROCK thing. I have asus b450 boards that also don't have these features and honestly my asus boards die much more often which is why i go with asrock. I love asrock because for what you pay you get a good amount of features and it doesn't look like shit like some other branded boards out there.

    • @brianm.595
      @brianm.595 3 роки тому +6

@@kotaspremiere2931 it varies by model honestly b450 is low tier and b450m is probably even more stripped down... for the form factor.. you are totally correct you get what you pay for. something like dual bios i would imagine is not common until midrange plus. It used to only be on overclocking focused boards. Just for fun, I have an as rock am3+ or whatever motherboard that still works great however it remains the only motherboard I have ever failed a bios update on... had to pop the chip out and order a new one since I couldn't find anyone to flash it nearby.

@@brianm.595 yes, and i would also like to point out that we are talking about one persons experience. Ive had shittier experiences with my gigabyte pro wifi and my rog strix board than my steel legend boards and i would say thats my experience. My arguement here is that just because one person has a bad experience with something doesn't mean the whole brand is bad in comparison to others. You have to consider pricepoint to feature set to quality among other brands and many other factors. sample size matters a lot in these situations as well.
If you do the research you will actually see that FOR the form factor and price the b450m steel legend is actually a very good choice. You get a lot of good things in that formfactor for that price in comparison to other choices in that tier. Im not saying other brands are trash and i would like to point out that i agree with what you say so i guess im just trying to further point out how i feel about the situation. I just want to express that all brands have their own pros and cons at certain price ranges and i think the steel legend line is popular for a reason which can be easily discovered through reviews and feedback all over google and places like newegg or forums. Not having dual bios on these lower end boards shouldn't be an issue limited to a specific brand when other brands do the same thing.
If dual bios is so cheap to put on a board then we should be arguing that it should be on ALL branded boards at the low tier range.

The board probably had a very old bios on it and if you flashed the most recent without any subsequent ones and only the most recent it most likely was incompatible. If you followed the *before updating this bios, please also read the description in the previous BIOS version* back far enough you'll see it will say update to this bios before updating to the most recent one.
Rookie mistake. take your time next time. read the fine print always. cheers

Granted those were hardware issues, like the halfway soldered Dimm4 memory slot, to the AMD4 CPU lever popping off after 3 uses, to the chip set heat sink falling off because the chip got too high temps and melted the plastic tabs holding it.

CH341A with a 1.8v adapter (no voltage mod needed since the adapter takes care of the design flaw in the 341a in which it pumps 5v through the data lines) I've never had to do it myself but its not too bad with a portable linux distro or there is a windows version that's a little harder to find. if it has Intel lan you may have to do some editing of the bios file the manufacturer gives you and you will loose the serial number that is stored in the bios as well in some cases.

Pro Note: To really ensure you wont corrupt your BIOS Flash, use a UPS. Almost happen to me year ago were I updated my BIOS and 2 minutes later the power went out. I've been using a UPS ever since on all 3 of my PC's. And a bonus to having a UPS. When the power does go out I can still use my PC watching a movie or listen to music during power outages. We have them happen quite often where I live. So having a $150 dollar 1500VA UPS is convenient worth the money to me. Also when I was using DSL I was still able to use the interwebs for a long while during an outage since the monitor, speakers, modem and router are also connected to the UPS.

RTFM also applies to BIOS updates. I mean, it's highlighted on the website and every release is littered with warnings. Can't fault ASRock for self-negligance.
I once let a person do three BIOS updates in succession just to be safe, even if two might have sufficed. Better to wait/read a few minutes than brick your board.

    • @Ironbuket
      @Ironbuket 3 роки тому

So he just ignored the multiple warnings and installed the latest bios... Well that's totally his fault. I dont think this is an asrock only issue? I recall when they started adding support for the extra CPUs it depended on if there was room to add the new CPU IDs to the bios or not. Some boards had room in their bios to keep the old and add the new, but you would think someone that fixed PCs for a living would be aware of this issue and not make such a dumb mistake. As someone that been through the asrock bios update process I think it warns you at least 3 times during that process that you can brick your system...

I had this same thing happen with a ASRock Z390 Phantom Gaming4. I updated it for a customer. He asked for the newer bios and it had the same warnings. It did the same thing. I managed to save it due to having the eprom hardware already. He saved up some money and bought a Asus Z390-E. Updated bios with no problems. Everything works fine now. Lesson learned: don't buy ASRock motherboards if you want to do any overclocking or xmp/docp. Way too much hassle and not great stability.

Just did the same thing on an old lga1155 mobo, the upgrade was definitely necessary as it was a itx board with a single pcie slot that couldn't support newer GPU's without the update. Luckily in my case, the bios chip was removable and I found a seller on Ebay that sells hundreds of older bios chip with the newest firmware for under $15. Installed it in 20 seconds and boom, brought it back to life.
I'm sure you would've already looked into it if yours is a removable one, but as for the programming tool, I think those are around $12 on Ebay and it's definitely worth a try considering theres nothing else wrong with the board

You're correct about clearing CMOS before flashing a new one on, but I always make a backup of my profiles on the same USB stick to keep good OC's and tight memory timings etc..
Not only does it stop conflicts within the BIOS options table, but it also frees up valuable CMOS memory because it clears all the BIOS profile, CSM(Compatibility Support Module) and TPM(Trusted Platform Module) data that can screw an OS install. I have made the mistake in the past myself....and it cost me.😒

This example right here, is exactly why JayzTwoCents made his video about motherboard features that need to be in the board, regardless of what "level" of board it is. I mean, my piece of advice is, will be the same as Jay's, don't update your bios, unless you have that safety net of a dual bios, or a flashback switch. If you're in Timmy Joe's position, just don't do it. If it means you have to buy an X570, to get that kind of feature, so you can run your Ryzen 5000, its the best way forward. If you need help, don't be afraid to ask, there are many out there that can help (though vet them first, lol).

From what I understand you have to update Asrock bios' incrementally. Each update doesn't include all of the previous changes. So, for example, you might need to update from v 3.2 to v 3.5 to v 4.6 to v 5.2. I could be wrong about this but it's how Asrock's download page makes it seem, if I am wrong I would appreciate correction on this. I've upgraded the bios on numerous ASUS boards and at least one MSI and never had an issue but I'm terrified to update the bios on my wife's PC because of the info I see on Asrock's website.

Eventually had to pull the cpu, do a bios flashback...but that wouldnt work. Took me hours to figure out...the USB has to be in MBR mode, and when I would format it, it was not in MBR. Once I changed the usb over to that, it actually worked like a charm.
TLDR - make sure the USB is in MBR before using it for bios flashback, because when you usually formalt them, they go GPT, and that WONT work with flashback

A friend of mine flashed the BIOS on his MSI motherboard using Dragon Center and it hosed his PC. Fortunately it had BIOS flashback and I was able to restore it and install the new BIOS from a thumb drive instead of that crappy Dragon Center software. When it was all said and done he didn't even need the update because it was for enabling compatibility with Ryzen 5000 CPUs and he has a 3600X and no plans to upgrade it.

    Two take-aways from this:
    1. Be careful when updating BIOS on B450/X470. If you have a Zen or Zen+ CPU you might entirely remove support for those CPUs on your motherboard with the wrong BIOS version
    2. Always, always, always check memory QVL list for your specific motherboard

I just did the same damn thing earlier this week and bricked my board as well. Kept the board because I had a hunch there is a way to flash the bios back onto the chip. Now that I know this, going to try to get that done because I bought a B550 board to go with a Ryzen 5000 CPU anyway and still have the 2600 and the board handy, so going to repurpose that PC into something else.

Recommendation at 7:18 is on point.
I know everyone in the tech community always says to keep your BIOS up to date for better performance or stability or whatever, but I've had at least one or two motherboards in the past brick from a BIOS update when I didn't do anything wrong. Not saying it's always going to happen, but a BIOS update is one of those things that will usually go just fine, but CAN brick a whole system if there's an error. Please don't ever update your BIOS if there's nothing wrong with your computer.

I just went through this with an Asus b350 Tuf gaming am4 motherboard, I replaced it with a gigabyte and tried to reflash the chip "to no avail" and am now waiting on a new bios chip to see if that fixes it, I added the serial, mac address and uuid to the new file with hex edit but it still didn't help. But be careful with a CH341A, you have to modify it because the data pins are not regulated at 3v they output at 5v which I later found out after ruining my 1.8v chip on my Asus "even though you probably shouldn't try to flash a 1.8v chip at 3v either" I would look at a EZP2019+ probably the best hope for fixing it.

This video reminds me of an old Mobo I had with an amazing feature that is sadly no longer anywhere. It had an extremely low footprint linux distro on a chip on the mobo that you could boot into in an emergency. Very very useful for hardware failures that stop you booting to windows but still let a super low footprint linux build work. You can copy files and get online and check emails and so on(before android phones were popular). It never took off as too many people said "what is the point?", but there was a great point as not every PC works 100% of the time and having that fallback option was just great. Anyway, my reminiscences. Must have been in about 2009 that mobo/bios. Would be great to see it re emerge on high end mobos.

Use BIOS reset jumper or switch to clear BIOS settings. Remove RAM and install generic 2133MHz single module. When you swap RAM system config will have to change on boot. It could help go back to defaults if it's a problem using that specific RAM kit.
    Non-booting is not bricked.

    Got a question for you,
if you have the mother board box still,
Would you not be able to take it to an ASROG Distributer in Canada and they can scan the Barcode and replace it cause it is still under warranty?
I use to do it by taking it to our local distributer, and they would replace it with only the serial number on the box,
not even having a invoice or an account at the distributor no questions asked.

Asrock swaps bios for some CPU and APU if you put the wrong bios on it the board won't work on it if you get the right CPU that the bios go with you can save the board if you have an older ryzen in it won't work with newer bios so if you have a newer ryzen chip try it in the board it will give you chance to reflash it.

Oh that is sad. I hope you can fix the motherboard later on maybe. I wish they still would have removable BIOS chips in a little socket. I once bought one preflashed as a replacement cheap on Ebay for a weird acting Sandy bridge motherboard but it had some other problems (but it was around 15 bucks, so worth trying). Fun fact: I also played and finished The Stick of Truth over the easter weekend, but on my XBOX 360. Cheers and good luck, stay healthy through this times. Greetings from Germany

I believe I bricked my A320 motherboard because I plugged in the USB into a front panel USB port, so keep that in mind and do not do what I did, always plug it into the motherboard's rear i/o and if they have a specific port labeled as bios that's the way to go.

Not sure why, but manually setting timings usually results in far less boot loops when training memory. Also, I like to get every bit of latency down, so I can usually get better results than XMP. I almost feel like XMP/DOCP was made for newbs.
