Thank you so much. I managed to replace the shoes of my Aygo. It's not that complicated, but your video helped my a lot. I have 200.000 km on mine (124k miles) and i hope its good for another few years now that i replaced the rear brakes, muffler, catalysator/manifold and suspension couplers.
Great video. For anyone doing the job on an older car, might be worthwhile replacing the adjuster mechanism too. I've just done the rear on our 2006 Aygo. Both calipers were seized and the adjuster screw was all rusted up one side. Managed to get the nut to move up and down but it simply isn't adjusting when doing the brake pedal/hand brake and isn't gripping as well that side when hand brake on. So, my advice is to replace them too as it's a fiddly job (was for me anyway) and when it's done it's done for (hopefully) several years
If you had included a check for seized slave cylinder pistons and a look behind the rubbers for leaks , it would have been a perfect video , great job on the close ups and explanation of the auto adjusters , best video Ive seen.
@@CycloneCyd I had two on mine , needless to say not found till saturday afternoon , but got them freed up and not leaking , so all is grand for a while.
@@CycloneCyd Just been to a garage and had mine diagnosed as seized. Wheel wouldn't turn freely when up on lift, apparently. Was looking for a vid on how to replace the brake cylinder (aka slave cylinder), but not to worry!
@@enemycrab9229 once you've got the rear drums apart, replacing the cylinders is a doddle. Have a look at this video on my son's old Polo. I remove and replace the cylinder in it. The Polo one was held in with a screw, can't remember how the C1 is held in, but some use clips. ua-cam.com/video/8NraBhfWApc/v-deo.html
@@CycloneCyd I think until you have to change the rear wheel cylinders on this car yourself, I think you would take those words back. Yes looks very easy, and should be, but the cylinders are aluminium with steel brake pipes going to them, so what should be an easy job, turns out not to be, and an expensive one. Even with heat, flare spanners, releasing oil, then still the brake pipe nut to the cylinder rounds off, mole grips etc, you will end up having to cut the pipe and fitting a new brake pipe with the cylinder. Both my rear cylinders on my 07 plate C1 seized, and I found out all this then trying to change them. Seems common for the wheel cylinders seizing on these C1's.
Great attention to detail here especially the adjuster set up, this is where the avid diyer betters the garage job! So easy to make mistakes. Both my cylinders had seized and fric material detached on the wife's yaris😯 👍
Excellently descriptive video as always thanks Cyd. I really struggled though with the adjuster spring that fastens to the leading shoe. It came off with this spring under the shoe as did yours but you replaced back on top of the shoe. It's only when I went back to check what I was doing wrong I noticed the difference. I'm supposing this doesn't matter because I really wanted it to go back as original but I'd probably need super powers to do that 🙄 or a special tool. Cheers 👍
If it ain't broke, don't fix it. They could last the life of the car, 250,000 miles or more. It was probably my fault for not bleeding the brakes often enough. For a while I wasn't able to after an accident. Back on it now though.
Hi there new to the channel what a brilliant detailed video.i have the same car and have problems with water coming in on the back seats any idea please
thank you for this. unfortunately for me the damn handbrake cables are slightly sticking and causing the brakes to very slightly bind & the MOT centre wont pass it. I have ordered new cables but have not found any online videos about changing this vehicles handbrake cables. I tried plusgas and wd40 on all brake drum components and spraying it in each end of the brake cable but it still sticks very slightly and the MOT centre refuses to pass it.
What's the drag figures from the roller tester? 10-15kg would be normal per wheel and as long as it isn't above 25kg per wheel they really should pass it. As you can see from the MoT manual there is no specific requirement for the 'drag' to be tested or noted and there is no stipulated maximum. Do let us know how you get on www.gov.uk/guidance/mot-inspection-manual-for-private-passenger-and-light-commercial-vehicles/1-brakes#section-1-3-1
@@CycloneCyd Thanks for this. The MOT tester seems to have a braking phobia. I ordered new brake cables, shoes, drums and changed the lot now. Lets see what he has to say now.

Well done. You are the first person I’ve seen doing these cars who knows how to release the shoes from the backplate properly
Thank you, sir.

The best explanation of how to replace your brakes. Thanks!
Excellent video. No faffing around, no waffling on. Straight to the job in hand. A job well done sir, Very informative.
Thank you. 👍👍
Going to tackle this job on my wife’s Peugeot 107. This video is exactly what I need 👍🏼
Best video yet ,unlike them other ones ,with annoying music.
Yeah, I stopped adding music ages and ages ago. Doesn't suit this type of tutorial IMO
Finally a comprehensive how to on the aygo! Thanks a lot :)

Never seen a seized rear cylinder. Plenty of leaking ones, but not seized. I guess it must happen though. Good point though to check it's okay.

The wear rate on these small light cars is so low these brakes would last forever if it weren't for 'other' problems!!
Excellent tutorial, eloquently spoken. Thanks.
Really good video, however Toyota official dealer manual says use copperslip on the bearing surfaces
Thanks for the info
You make it look so easy. I do most my own jobs and my daughters but drum brakes give me nightmares
Excellent video, helped me a lot doing the job on my car. Greetings from Germany
Great work, very professional
Thank you, one of the best informative helpull videos i have seen 👍
Cyd, thank you. I'll be using this as a guide for my Swift with brake shoes.
Good content. All the useful info without any flannel! Thank you.
I notice the spring at the end of the adjuster (with screw) was replaced the wrong way round?
bloody amazing attention to detail thank you for creating such a informative video

Спасибо! Все четко рассказали. Отлично проделанная работа!
Great video Cyd, Thanks. Did you jack the car up under the beam between the two wheels ?
Yes I did, in the middle.
Bang on video,,,I could become a Mechanic off your video's
That's the idea. Better than getting ripped off by useless garages
Maybe take a picture of how it all looks before dismantling..

My brakes seems not to adjust themselves. And the brake pedal grips far down after I changed the shoes?
After how many kilometers or miles is this change
WOW, very helpful video ! Thanks a lot !
Excellent video. All those niggly details covered. Thanks
Thumbs up from me cyd 👍
Awesome, thank you!
well explained! like our teacher did at school. even my wife understood :-P
How many miles can I drive before needing to replace drum brakes ? Thx
Same set up on the Toyota aygo I think.
Hi there, great vid! Do you think this is the same for a Peugeot 108?
I don't know for 100%, but i would imagine so. Almost certainly very similar. Few drum brake systems are much different.
