These Turf tires were so flat from being shipped on pallet from china the tires would not set the bead no matter what was tried. The only thing that worked was what you see in this video. Even after putting 2x4 blocks in the tires and leaving them in the summer sun for 2 weeks they still returned to the deformed shape from the way they were shipped. Everyone asks we use Ether or Engine Spray Start! Dont try this @ home.
It works when the ratchet strap doesn't and you don't wanna send the tire flying with the cheetah. Very well demonstrated
Not for me . I used 3 no luck
I just did this and it worked . I couldn't believe it . I used carb cleaner , sprayed it in the tire off of the mower . Then shook it up for a few seconds and touched it off with a propane torch . I am glad i saw this vid .
I mounted eight tires today that must have been at the bottom of a big pile of tires. They were totally smooshed. A couple sprays of brake cleaner followed by a propane torch and every one of them got seated on the bead ready for air. I’m a believer!
I did this 10 years ago on an ancient riding mower I picked up for $150 with both front tires flat. 42" cut, 18HP, twin cylinder. Helluva beast for my 105' by 74' lawn =)
20 year old story, at this point.
Old as I am, that still kind of gets me.
The Ether in the starting fluid plus the oxygen inside the tire when ignited causes an explosion. This explosion that happens on the inside of the tire pushes the tire walls out towards the rim where 90% of the time they'll stick to the rim and create an airtight seal so you can inflate the tire. If for any reason you're going to do this try using a tow strap around the tread of the tire first to clinch it down and spread the walls.
I did this to mount tires today, but I was smart enough to wear work gloves, long sleeves, a hat and eye protection. When I did the first tire, I jumped so fast that the Bic lighter in my hand flew twenty feet. Had a lot more confidence with the second one. I used just on brief spray of engine starter fluid (ether). It doesn't take much to make a good-sized explosion. One tip - removing the valve core will prevent the tire collapsing when the explosive gas in the tire instantly cools by hundreds of degrees.
i was about to say, all the other videos i watched they removed the valve core.
Why thank you lawn mower guy! I just got two tires from Walmart and they wouldn't change them for me so I had the spoons and dish soap and took off the old ones and put on the new ones but couldn't get them to seat so I took them to Walmart to seat them and they could only seat one so we went home and then I hit up the ol UA-cam and you showed how to do it and it worked just fine!
Walmart??? Really.. I bet you anything, that a real Tire place would do that in a min.... come on Walmart??? there nothing but a bunch of Button pushers.. in other words, they have no clue what to do.. I would not EVER even bring my car in for just a simple oil change, to walmart.......
truckers have been doing this for decades. necessity baby! the mother of invention! nice execution with the pyroil starting fluid!
This is pretty amazing actually. I had some spray ether in my garage and I shot some around the rim of a little small trailer tire I'm trying to mount. You better make sure you're back a bit when you do it. It caught my entire tire on fire but it quickly dissipated. So don't spray as much as I did. Just spray a couple of pops of it at every quarter of the rim. It seated one side of my tire but not the other. And I sprayed it on both sides several times. So I gave up and went back to a big wide ratchet strap that I had. I had tried it with a thin strap and it didn't work. But I think I know why now. Anyhow, I ratcheted down the tire all the way around the tread ( like you see in some of the other videos ). My tire is kinda oblong from the way it was stored so I had to put my weight on the oblong side while ratcheting it. Then I shot the air to it with the valve stem removed and with no chuck on the hose and BAM it finally aired up. For two days I've been trying to get this stupid thing on. Now I have one more to do. I think the tip in this video may have helped my situation just because it heated up the tire and made it more flexible. So if you're reading this perhaps you need to incorporate two of these tricks to make it work. Oh, and I used dishwashing liquid in water to slick up the tire and rim. Thanks for the video Billy Mac.
I can neither confirm nor deny that I tried this at home, but after hours of attempting the ratchet strap technique I no longer have a flat tire
Ratchet doesn’t work
My front tire was “freshly” flat (no deformation). At first, the ratchet strap didn’t work, but when I added some dishwashing liquid to a glass of water, spread that on both sides of the rim and tire lip, and tightened the strap a little more…SUCCESS!
I did the ratchet thing and the starter fluid thing simultaneously. Broke the strap and shot the ratchet part about 20 feet, but it worked.
Last year in the snow, me and a bunch of other friends was out in a car and we slid into the edge of the footpath and the front right tyre came from the rim itself, just like yours was. This is the technique we used at the time. It's pretty funny actually!
I have done this with tractor tires, worked great! Only thing I do differently is spray a line of either from the opening, gives you a second to jump back as the line burns.
I'm most definitely trying this at home, tomorrow to be exact lol. Thanks
Billy Mac...after all these years, and all the tires I've mounted, I didn't think I'd have to research this. But you nailed it (Chinese tires that have sat on a pallet for 2 years). Thanks, you executed this perfectly. And I got a huge kick out of the people who took your fictitious comment at the end...'seriously.' "Don't try this at home"....Hahahaha, where
else the heck you gonna fix your tractor tire bro...? Well done Billy !
Great tires, came nicely packed in the box, and did not compress ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx985f3iNjxHFMO6JoE7CSGActiIEyumFx . It fitted my craftsman riding mower just fine. It is a little narrower than my stock tires but so far it has held up and works great. No air leaks and traction was great in my hilly backyard. Installation was good and was not too difficult, highly recommended.
Been there, done that, works great. Works on truck tires, tractor and scraper tires, just use an amount of starting fluid commensurate with the tire size.
just informing people... find out where your gas tank is first! john deeres have the gas tank right next to the rear wheels, soooo be careful
Use starting fluid...goes right out and will not burn the bead or tire.Been doing it for 60 years...I;m and old guy...
"Don't try this at home" *Says to try it in title of the video* lol
bgjfis
It needs to be said, for liability reasons.
Because, you know that stupid woman, who sued McDonalds for serving hot coffee ...
will try this at home, and burn her freaking face off.
Yeah that's funny as hell
Video title says, "try this". Guy in the video says, "Don't try this at home". What do I do now?
try this at outside of your home
Try this at your friends house.
Where we're going, we don't need roads! Billymac, you sound like Doc Brown off Back To The Future!!! Awesome trick for the tyres, I'll try it if my mower tyres ever get unseated.
I did this for the first time today. Less is more and get on the air right away. Only way for tires that come shipped compressed where you can't get the bead to push against the rim with a strap or rope. The 5 gallon bucket trick looks to work well also, but you have to have the rim off the tractor for it to work.
The other safer trick is to wrap a ratchet strap around the outer diameter of the tire and cinch it up until the beads touch. Then air it up. It sets up right away even with a cheap low flow air pump.
I've used the ratchet strap method several times with small tires for lawn mowers, wheel barrow, and a hand truck. Once used a come-along with wire cable to fit a narrow 16 inch tire to a wide wheel for a hay conditioner. It helps to use some soapy water on the bead as well. It works without the danger of injuring innocent bystanders or giving young kids new ways to get hurt.
That works about 95% of tbe time but for the 5% of tires like mine they dont, hence my presence here. i cinched it so tight it looked like the letter "F" when i was done....still wont seal. Ethering the shit outta that thing tomorrow. I should tape me blowing my hand off.
that method does not always work
I’ve had similar problems, that even a ratchet-strap won’t fix. For these times, I keep a box of cheap bicycle inner-tubes aournd. If you can get one bead to at least touch, the tube will fill the gap with the other bead and rim, and you can get it to inflate. Just be quick about getting the tube out of the way.
Nope. Been at it with the strap for two hours... still a no go.
Tomorrow i try fire!!!!!
Nicely executed. However, next time remove the air valve from the stem, that way you'll avoid much of the implosion effect.
The way I would do this is as follows. Take the valve stem out of the tire valve, turn air compressor regulator to 100psi, use a handle valve on the air line, attach hose end to the tire and quickly turn on and off the flow through the hose using the handle valve. It should be enough air at such a high rate to get the tire to seat. You take the valve out of the stem to get a faster air flow.
the video said... lawn tractor tire wont inflate ...TRY THIS...
and then when video finish said.....
DONT TRY THIS AT HOME.....
WTF.......!!!!!!!!!!!
Eder Garcia Im sure you not going to try inflating a lawn tractor tire in a house
+Eder Garcia
The following is not the way to inflate tires( warning). Do not try this at home( disclaimer).
Lol
I was about to go and type this out, but thanks for doing it for me three years earlier guy who will never see this.
...just try this at your neighbors... that way, you're not trying at home
Take the valve out and it wont deflate itself off the bead.
Also you can use a bucket to seat the bead. Put the tire on the bucket push down on the rim the air fills the bucket and then seats the top bead, then the bottom beads. Not as dangerous as fire.
Good idea!
your supposed to take the valve out so it doesn't implode after it expands
I can't believe all the negative comments and thumbs down when this trick has been used by "the pros" for years and years.
Some fool even suggested taking it to "discount tire".
How lame.
I tried a dozen different ways to bead my Harley tire with no success. Done the fire beading and it worked perfectly.
I tried this about a half dozen times, all I succeeded in doing was setting my tire on fire. :) I ended up just taking it to the tire shop and watching him mess with it about 15 times with that giant air cannon thing bead setter.
Worked for me with Brake cleaner spray immediately!!
I had given up tried this worked perfect.
Took a couple of try’s but I got it using a ratchet strap on the tire works well
Worked for me. Like the video shows, just put the fire out quickly like he did. I used a large rag. Make sure no flammables are nearby. My old worn tire didnt shrink like his did, but to my surprise it filled right up.
Very Good!! Just Do Not Put Too Much Ether In The Tire, It could Blow The Tire Off The Rim and Might Hurt You...
If you dont have ether then you can also tighten a ratchet strap orund the center of the tire and just pump it up like normal. But its not very dangerouse i dont understand the "dont try this at home" ive done it hundreds of times offroading.
The 2 inch valved bead seater tank at 100 PSI is the best way . I`v tried that method and failed to open the beads The tank & valve type I made is like the ones you buy for around $500 I paid $30 for the plumbing and zero for a old 20 LB propane tank. Works great and safely !
You need Starter Fluid, Propane, WD40 or Carb Spray and spray a small amount is all you need. Too much will ruin things and it suck in too much.
Several years ago I started using tubes in all our equipment tires. Avoids the troubles of seating a bead like this.
I realize not everyone can use tubes because of tough plant life like thorns etc...
Tried that a couple of times and worked only once (the first time I did it). Fitting a tube of a bicycle tire on the inside of the rim should work also, but It didn't work either with me.
The soap method didn't work either.
Starter fluid did work.
This works like a charm, just did it to one of my front tires because the strap method wouldn't work. Definitely take the valve stem out first, and you only need a light squirt of carb cleaner.
lol this guy is tooo funny, hes like so into the way hes doing it and then says "Sucess!".
I love how in the title it says try this but in the video he says don't try this at home
I have actually done this on a trailer tire that was flat and lost its bead. I was 50 miles from home and the air at the gas station would not set the bead, Used a can of brake fluid (it uses ether as a propellant) lit it and poof. were were then able to inflate the tire. I admit I was skeptical with the suggestion but what choice did I have so I tried it. But I would not recommend it except in an emergency when no other means is available
I've used cheap carb spray for years .do not try this without understanding. air /carb spray mix. and of course fire and aloud pop. 3 seconds spray if rim is half in deflection I. would recomend. having the tire and rim flat on a concrete surface. and a co2 fire extinguisher. works every time for me .also try wrapping a rope around the middle of the tire and put a big flat head screw driver between rope and twist till it squeezed the tire in a solid inch or so then use a air gun around rim with as much air flow possible. .and the tire will instantly inflate ..
Title: Try this!
Ending: Don't try this at home.
What the F*ck do I do then?
Try it at church!?
because normally you have to air the tire up immediately or youll lose the bead... I used to replace semi tires everyday for years... As soon as it explodes you run up and put air in it and it keeps the pressure. But leavin the tire on the mower is a good way to catch somethin on fire
Can't argue with success!
as soon as the tire seals on the beads, the oxygen supply inside the tire is consumed, so combustion can no longer be supported. That's why the flame goes out instantly, and the tire starts to suck inward and has to be re inflated with compressed air.
You got lucky, most often the bead comes right off again, also it's difficult to get just the right amount of ether in there... Not enough and it won't seat, too much and you might get more boom than you bargained for... Best I have found is the flames heat the rubber, you can then hand mold it into shape, beyond that you'll want to use a Bead blaster.
you can also wrap a ratchet strap around the tire so you dont have to waste high dollar starting fluid
do not try this at home :)) i will come to america to try this at u home :))
lol
i like that he in the rubric say try this, but then later "dont try this at home"! :D
my tires came to me shipped all out of shape so i tried the ratchet strap which did nothing but make the gap bigger. next i tried lighter fluid but the gap between tire bead and rim was too wide so all i got was flames shooting out of there. i have actually tried the fire method about three times with zero success. finally i called the local tire service to get a price on inflating them for me. he never gave me a price but said it would take a few days because they had to reshape the tires. he did give me a tip that i am going to try though. he said put a tube in it and air it up and that would shape the tire which would make it easy to inflate. of course tube in tire without the wheel in case any are wondering.
Lighter Fluid is too solid... You need Starter Fluid or Carb Spray and spray a small amount is all you need. Too much will ruin things and it suck in too much.
make sure you hit the release valve once becasue the fire will sit there and burn until there is no air i melted my bead one time doing this, works great tho!
Run a nylon ratcheting strap around the garden tractor tire and tighten till it beads safe and simple!
@bostonbillymac You don't have to pump the nozzle on aerosol cans. The contents are under pressure. Just press nozzle and contents will come out.
You're welcome.
Ratchet strap(s) works good too. I have done this but use a locking air chuck so you can get farther away.
Gonna try it on my log splitters tire. Thank you!
title: "Try this"
video:"Dont try this at home."
Richard Inyagills 😂😂it makes no sense
Richard it is dangerous tbh
The same technique we teach to medics who are about to go to duty in Africa. And if no inflation apparatus at hand, divide the pressure of the other 3 wheels to inflate the fourth. Survival techniques for the desert. A bit of gasoline, a flame to ignite it and you have pressure to the tire.
@Superthecod Strap did not work, tried multiple straps, they ship the tires bulk on the ship from China, they compact them to get more in the ship and they stay that way for months and lose there shape.
wth? the caption says "TRY THIS" then you say "dont try this at home" hahaha!!
EPIC
I've had good luck using an old leather belt around the tire. I've used ether on truck tires but never on automotive or mower tires. To each his/her own.
I saw this trick done on a trail to an 800hp jeep that blew a bead mudding it was sweet.
Works much better if you start the inflate and just one second later light the gas. WHOOMP! tire is instantly hard!
Ratchet straps, wood blocks, turbo shot of 160 psi of air, you name it, only the ether worked period!
"Lawn tractor tire wont inflate, try this!" "dont try this at home"
"Lawn tractor tire wont inflate, *try this!*"
Inner tube plus summer heat can work at times. Really though if you use ether that valve core should come out. I've seen some nasty mounting failures from using ether, nothing real injury related more so than destroying tires, however the potential for injury does exist.
Tried it anyway. Comedy of errors. Tried it 3 times and burnt the hair off my forearm. The damn tires were stiff as hell so the 4th time I put a ratchet strap on the center of the tire and ratcheted it down and lit her up. It finally worked, but broke my ratchet strap an shot it about 20 feet out into the yard.
Yea I guess if you got a cold beer waitin for ya then you don't wanna take the extra couple seconds for safety...lol
Uh, most of the people who encounter this video are specifically wanting to "try this at home". That includes me. I have some stubborn ATV tires I just mounted and came to UA-cam to find out "how to do this at home".
🙂
we know you tried that at home...
The same here. That new tire wasn't stored properly so the solution is ether. You know that a can of ether can save you a fortune on tire installation at the garage. Its not the safest way but, you used the right amount of ether. Not to be confused with jackasses that use way too much then complain about not being able to find the tire.
I just use a strap or small rope around the tire and keep pushing down on the tread area of the tire, that usually works well.
Just to be safe just put 2x4 blocks to stretch the beads then mount them on the rim.
Takes a couple of days to stretch the tires width wise
Put 2x4’s inside all around in the tires, they looked like they were mounted on rims, left out sitting in the Sun for a week, absolutely No Go, this is the only way!
to keep chemicals and whatnot off the hands while working on the vehicle, as well as to keep grease and stuff off. Also, quicker to clean up.
I saw "Hugh" do this on "Ice road truckers"
Remove the valve core first if you must do it this way. As other said just use a belt/strap/etc centered on the tread forcing the tire bead out to the rim.
Have you seen that guy using a 5-gallon bucket as a tire inflating machine? It's cool too, anf you don't have to waste your combustables.
Seen a tire on a John Deer 333D skid steer blow up when the mechanic tried this. I guess there was still something smoldering when he started filling it, but when he did it fucking blew, dude was lucky to live.
Tried the ratchet strap earlier today…..didn’t work. Watch several with the aerosolize method. Used brake cleaner. No explosion. Tire briefly caught fire. Several times. Went back ratchet strap and it worked. Maybe the heat on the tires helped 😮. Nonetheless got it fixed
It is starte fluid any fluid that is flammable in an aerosol can should do the trick. Also this creates a vacum after the gases expand . That why he puts in air onto the tire.
usually if you take the valve out you can get the correct volume of air to seat the bead (with the assistance of pulling the tire toward the bead
Naaaaahhhhh! That ain't nuthin new! Us "old school" truckers have been doin that with our 18-wheeler semi truck tires for years n years! But, good to see it work on riding lawn tractor tires/wheels to!
CAPTION: “Try this…”
DESCRIPTION & VIDEO: “Don’t try this…”
ya did this at school just to teach my teacher something that we do with tractor tires that the dead don't want to pop.
If you don't want to do it that way use a ratchet strap and strap down the center and put a little air in there and take it off and fill it the rest of the way
you should of used 3 full cans in there
www.quickanddirtytips.com/education/grammar/should-have-or-should-of
3 cans hahahaaha Can you say BOOOOOOM!!!!!!
The way that tire started sucking back in i think it was still cooking a bit longer than expected. Backdraft.
Doing this to the tire actually creates a vacum so yeah he did pretty good
Put a cargo strap around the tire at the center of the tread and cinch it. That will force the beads to seat. Add air and release the strap.
What is the point of this video if the average person is not to try this at home ??
Done it heaps of times and it's no big deal...
This was done in TopGear Polar special and works a treat
You didn't do that right next to that mower's gas tank, did you?
Probably, its only fire!
Just another day in the life of a boss
I'v done this before and it works , just don't do it if you have a TPMS sensor lol
"Don't try this at home!"
Me: Go to a friends house!
"Dont try this at home" where were you doin' it, @ the neighbours?
