How to Re Bead a Tire | In the Field Vehicle Repair | Tactical Rifleman

- Опубліковано 15 вер 2016
- Tier-1 Group has one of the greatest driving programs on the planet. Besides just teaching High-Speed Vehicle Dynamics, T1G also covers some really great field vehicle repairs. If you saw our video on repairing bullet holes in a radiator, you’ll recall Chad is very direct and to the point. You’ll find the same here, where Chad takes us through reseating a tire bead in the field.
First, what is a tire bead, and why would I need to reseat it? The “Bead” is the lip of the tire that touches the metal rim of the wheel. On modern tires, this bead is heavily reinforced and is very hard to work with without an actual tire machine. So What?
In a perfect world, we never get flat tires and, if we did, we would just put on the spare tire and take the flat to a local tire shop. Now, fast forward to the real world and you may find yourself in need of a repair with no mechanic. You don’t have to be an SOF Operator in the middle of a covert op in some foreign desert; you might just be out in the mountains hunting or just enjoying the great outdoors. Whatever your situation, having the knowledge to reseat a tire bead in the field may just be the mental tool that saves the day (or at least your afternoon).
Reseating the Tire Bead requires a airtight seal (to keep air from escaping) and a air source to provide enough air pressure to “pop” the tire bead back into its proper location (seated within the lip of the rim).
Many 4x4 off-roaders will teach a simple technique of placing a rachet strap around the circumference of the tire and tightening the strap to bulge the tire out to seal it around the edges. They’ll then air up the tire with a on-board air compressor until the tire bead properly seats. Air up to your desired tire pressure and you’re rolling down the road again. While this technique works fairly well for large over-sized tires, it does not work well in every situation...
Enter Chad, with his lighter and can of starter fluid. In this video, Chad is going to show you a really easy and fast technique for reseating the bead of a tire in the field. We’ve done hundreds of tires like this. You can buy a can of starter fluid in just about any country on the planet. Add it to the list of other supplies that you purchase right after you pick up your rental car. Toss it in the trunk, and you’ll probably never need it.
So, watch the video three or four times, then go out and practice in the back yard? Nope. Some of this skills seem really easy, but it’s also really easy to screw it up. Drop the coin, and sign up for one of Chad’s courses. Besides just this trick, he also covers dozens of other really cool expedient field repairs. Chad will properly demonstrate the task, and then have every student do each task. Try finding that at other driving courses. Knowledge is power; learn from the Best. Strength and Honor, Tactical Rifleman.

The part about making a fuse with the fluid really helped thanks
I learned this trick back in the late 80's to reseat a paddle tire on my dune buggy. Keep in mind this kind of tire runs on 8-10 lbs of pressure max. I had no guide on how long to spray the fluid, so I gave it a good 10 seconds of spray. Have you ever seen a flaming tire fly 40ft into the air and land ( bouncing aflame)? I have. There was 38 psi in the tire, ( I remember this event quite vividly) which I checked after stomping out the flames. Tip: pay attention to the duration of the spray you put in the tire. Of course, modern starting fluids aren't as explosive as the good 'ol ether of yesterday.
Nah. Probably not.
The starter fluid I get is ether
This is the best tutorial on how to put your tire on the rim I've ever seen.
Great job and thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience.
Blessings and more blessings to you and your family
Thanks for watching, TR
I used brake clean. Worked like a charm. Thanks Tier-1 great tip!!
WOW! I m speechless. I do want to thank you for making this. I had been fighting with trying to reseat the bead on my tire 11/2 hours and was about to throw in the wrench and take it to a shop... your technique worked without a hitch, and you're right, you hardly need any fluid in there at all. it happened Zip Bang! Thanks again x 1,000,000!!
Glad we could help. Thanks for watching. TR.
This is no doubt the absolute best video on seating a bead with this method. This method may seem like it's for drunken , hacky hilbillies, but this dude has perfected it and taken all of the mystery and most of the danger out of it. Still be careful obviously with the amount you spray and leaving a trail.
Outstanding, Life Saving Information, Thank You Gentlemen!
Gas works fine on standard car/truck tires, I do it all the time when changing rims/tires. Just don't add much gas and make sure to have something to put the little flame out before burning the actual tire
Knowledge is power too right 😁
Had good luck w/propane. No “ fuse “. Had a couple wouldn’t stay. Made tourniquet of sorts on tread. Wrap all the way around with ratchet strap or rope and twist. Forces bead outward and keeps seated while air entering or escaping.
Real A Team stuff. Hahahah
Thank you very much. I watched many video but only This video helpped me get the tire re-beaded successfully.
Glad to help
I saw this done on a TV show by people working in the arctic. Maybe it's necessary in that environment, but they were heavy handed on the fluid and set the wheel ablaze. And the tire sort of popped back into place. I think they used gasoline which might explain it.
Your demonstration showed that it need not be a dramatic task requiring much lighter fluid or other combustible fuel.
You guys rock. Worked like a champ, thank you.
hahaha, I never thought of such a thing. And filling a tire with sand....briliant.
Maybe McGyver was the director of this video.
I once sprayed the electrical contact cleaner into the electrical contacts of an industrial hoist motor for too long. Waited a moment. And then tried the hoist out with the pendant. Boom. 😅🍻
Good night Chesty, wherever you are.
The sand tip is excellent.
I use to run a ratchet strap around the tread and crank it down. Then fill with the air compressor
Great explanation of what I've considered a foolish and dangerous operation. It makes sense now and doesn't seem nearly as dangerous. Thanks for sharing.
Holy sh!t it worked,,, saved me the time and hassle of going down to the tire shop, who discovered this trick good stuff 👍.
Thanks. I had no idea it was a good idea to take the stem out, good tip, thanks.
Most helpful video I’ve seen in years
Glad to help
That’s Why You All Rock..!!
Oh boy this is cool; actually, I had no problem taking the tires off my riding mower but it would not reseat with all the rope & tie strap trick. My wife won't be able to tell me not to play with fire today 😂
The last time I did this was on a 252B bobcat. Surprised the shit out of my boss, who had spent an hour with an air compressor trying to seat and inflate the tire. I used carb and choke cleaner.
Superb skills & technique! Thanks for sharing!
My pleasure!
acetone works great!
Amazing video this helped me with my moped tire 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Simply amazing!!
Best video by far !👍👍
Glad you liked it
Wow, made a run flat tire by packing it with sand.
That is freaking awesome.
Thanks for watching, TR
making my way through the archives! :)
Excellent! Thank y'all.
Oh boy, this brings back memories. I had to do this a couple years ago. It was interesting. I was at home so it was easier than in the bush. Still I had 16.5" rims and much larger tires so it was a somewhat dangerous operation. I opted to pull some nicrome wire out of a junk toaster and hooked it to a dumb battery charger. Placed it on the tire, sprayed the starting fluid in and then went and plugged in the battery charger. After the boom and screech I needed to fill it with air right away as I discovered that it would seat but would cool and suck the tire back in and unseat. Still, its a good think to know how to do. My only issue is, how many people actually remember to carry starting fluid with them? Not many. Gasoline may work, but I haven't tried it and don't plan to. I suppose hair spray or even propane. If you are desperate you may have to get very creative.
You forgot to remove the valve stem
Thanks gang. Got a heavy truck I'm doing it on
Badass video.New to Jeepin and this is very useful info. Thanks
Thanks
Lol what sucks is I'm attempting to do this right now but reasons are in reverse I'm almost dirt poor but I have to zero my rifle and have to break in a new sidearm but my two front tires on my old 86 subaru are bald with belts showing and most likely won't make it to the range without a blowout im trying to seat two new snow tires and it is definitely a learned skill 👍
I used rust spray on my lawn mower and it worked without a doubt
Do this with log truck tires to front end loaders. Works awesome 👌
Yep. Thanks for watching, TR
Great video wonderfull couldn't be better thank you
Glad you enjoyed it
Excellent Video...
Lol I was a UA-cam mechanic before I went to UTI, when I went to the school it's almost like I barely learned a thing lol I actually had a hand up on all the other dudes there from fixing all my own old ass rusty cars. Got student of the course over a bunch of these "car guys" I'm more of a fix it and be done guy. I don't enjoy fixing cars but I get it done
I didn't go to UTI, but I had one once lol
@@adrianfirewalker4183 😂😂
Excellent Advice..!!!!!
Karl, how bout a video for flashlight techniques while shooting with pistol which is not equipped with a mounted white light.
Crawfordsville on the map
So cool!
That's outstanding. Thanks for the great content of your channel.
Thank for watching, TR
Not safe kids
We did this in shop class in high school and the principal was so pissed when she found out.
Sweet I could've used this a time or two..
Great video, this question may sound unintelligent . I have friends who tell me they light tires and very dangerous to do. How come tire doesn't go up in air when you do it?
Thank you
Better to use too little than too much
Thank you
Great info!
Thanks for watching, TR
@@TacticalRifleman yes sir, thanks for all the great videos!
Karl, to your friend Chad Morman.... With the kind of Rescue Work & Training!? That I do? I'm like an Sponge on When it Comes To this kind of stuff? Love it!
Be sure to stay out of line with a rubber valve stem!!! Don't want to get hit with it if comes out...
Great old-timers trucker/farmer tip! Used this many, many, times over the yrs.
Can you put air/keep air in the tire even without the valve stem?
How much sand would you need to create a improvised run flat? Is it just filling the bottom half & letting gravity & momentum work?
Great Question, and one that I actually asked Chad during my first class with him. According to Chad, always try to fill the tire with as much sand as possible.
Take your wheel off and lay it on it's side with a broken bead then fill the tire with sand.
will the balancing beads melt or get damaged somehow with this technique?
No. The fire goes out too quick
I heard a missionary to Brazil tell of fixing a flat in the middle of nowhere. He had nothing to fix the flat, so he stuffed the tire with rotten wood and drove on that. Learn to improvise.
Sand also works
Thank you
Tried several times but just doesnt seem to work just burns but doesnt pop or anything
Thank you for this info.
KNOWLEDGE IS POWER
Amen
Outstanding
great vid - thanks!
On some ghetto shhhheee I was watching this video and I just held down the tire and put air and it came right back up and this is coming from a tire that had a bent rim and had to hammer it back in..
Note: add starting fluid to BOB
THANKS
I am not sure if he has enough pockets on his jacket lol
Can I do this wile the tire on the truck?
Yes, but jack it up off the ground
You did it all wrong! You have to fill the tire with enough starting fluid that when you light it, it lifts off the ground about 30 feet, taking out anything that it comes in contact with....you ....your other drunk friend, and anyone else stupid enough to be around for the event! At least that's the way my friend taught me out at the farm in Azle Texas....good times....good times....:)
Good video guys.......it had been a while and my idiot friend did not make a trail to the tire with the fluid...a very helpful little bit of information......(BTW he is also a Bell Helicopter Engineer that worked on the Osprey.....:))
Thanks!
Tony
Cool!
will this work for scooter tires
I would not try it, as there is not enough room to absorb the blast.
should you only do this if you have the tire completely off and away from the car? is it okay to do this while its on your car?
Yes. However, have the tire jacked off the ground far enough to allow it to fully expand.
I do this but i leave the valve stem in it and i leave a air hose already hooked up to the tire i spraw all the way around the tire i light it and as soon as i light it i hit it with air because the starting fuild does not always seal the tire buy its self.
👍
it works great !!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for watching, TR
Can you do this if the bead comes off back of tire and the whole tire is half way up the rim ?
Yes, just jack it up off the ground and you can do it still on the video
How much damage would this do to the wheel itself (not the tire). If I am offroad and I get the bead off because im aired down. Id be hesitant to ruin the wheel with the fire. Should I be fine?
We’ve done hundreds of tires... never any damage to rim
Didn't work for me but I guess I got to get some starting fluid instead because I used brake cleaner.
Starter fluid works best
Can you use gas instead of starting fluud
No
If you do this wrong your tire bead will be the least of your concerns.
Yep
I'm glad a more intelligent Norm Macdonald can show me how to do this
I used that on my car tire still didn’t work
Will this work on a motorcycle tire??
No
Great video....
Annoying music, hard to hear him talking
Didn’t work on my trailer tire. Must be too far gone. Don’t get it. Tried three times. It inflated all times but never re bead itself.
Needed more starter fluid
My man said come down to take a course. LMFAO, if you can't figure this s*** out on your own after just watching One UA-cam video you should have been messing around with s*** like this
worked for me, spraying WD40 and lighting
If the valve stem is in, can you do this to the opposite side of the tire while using a compressor on the other side to pump air in at the same time?
Don't take the chance of messing up your compressor.
should’ve watched this video before trying it myself giving myself 2nd degree burns, lmao im an idiot
Thxs man i like to drift a lot.and some times i lose control and smack the tire on the wall. And break the bead.
Sure lmao
Would WD-40
Nope... it's needs to explode with more force.
Great job... Now do it in the field.
Why not just hook up an air compressor to resit the bead.
The air just comes out the side and the bead never reseats.
Way to make something easy very complicated.
Don’t attempt this with someone that doesn’t understand what’s going on. Never while under the influence.
If you find that you frequently blow the bead (as you mentioned), then why don't you either air down less or simply get beed lock wheels?
Many of these techniques are directed at operators that are often running NSTVs or rental/indigenous vehicles overseas. Always try to avoid all problems. However, also arm yourself with the knowledge to deal with said problems, just incase something unforeseen happens. TR
Title says in the field tire repair but your in a shop
Actually, we are in a classroom. Part of our tactical driving courses include austere vehicle repairs, and hot wiring. Thanks for watching, TR
The valve stem doesn’t simply screw in and out
Heard that wrong
Yea and what if the tire that went flat was the rear left, BESIDE the gas tank ?! Pretty sure doing that wont be a good idea ...
Works fine. If you are scared; remove the tire from the vehicle and roll it to a safe distance.
That's very dangerous!!!!...I don't recommend it on the floor laying down.if you can do it on a vehicle it's safer...I drive a semi most of my life and ran into flat tires breaking beads....I leave on the truck and use either to inflate the tire... don't use too much as you can blow the tire off the rim when you light it....it also blows the tire apart....been there seen that...I use a propane torch to light but turn sideways when lighting....be very careful!!!.this suit can kill you!!!!!
Agree 100%, but it is still a great tool to have in your mental toolbox. Thanks for sharing your experience. TR
