I watched this video about a year ago Today I just took the bed off a Ford ranger from western NEW YORK the frame was rusted terrible 1/8 thick Was going to buy a needler Then I remembered watching this Brilliant !!!!thanks for posting this on UA-cam It worked amazingly Again thanks Dave
Me too, nice tip! I was using the needle scaler today to clean-up a friends brake drums , knowing this would had made it a lot easier! Thanks for the tip,
I need to de rust my chassis and this is probably gna help me out alot. thanks. Also you can put the bit in all the way and then the spring acts like the rubber band.
I’m 17 and rebuilding a 91 Dodge D250 12 valve with major rust, it doesn’t help that I live in a state that uses an insane amount of salt during winter. Just looking for tips on how to get bad rust off quickly but also a bit quieter for my neighbors until I rent a shop. Any tips would help!!
I just have a question, the layer that you removes, Is it an original layer of the car that is be consumed by rust over years ? Or it's an additional layer that have been create by agglomerate corrosion ? For resume, do you "cut" the car, or you only remove a supplementary layer, not an original layer ?
Those battery operated hand tools that vibrate for wood working ,do a great job. I have just done this on my chassis on an 8 ton water truck. These tools are made by Making, Ryobi, all the main brands. There is an attachment for metal work. I found it more gentle than the other two, just as effective and easy to hold and operate. But the chisel does work, I just don't think my neighbours would have appreciated it
I've been looking for a new used truck and doing some price comparisons. Vehicles from rust-free areas in the US have about a $2,000 higher blue book value than the same vehicle from rust belt states. Why do we put up with it? There are viable alternatives to salt. Good video and a hell of a good job getting the rust off.
HUBBABUBBA DOOPYDOOP3 days agoThese work excellent, too- even faster than a 1-blade chisel www.amazon.com/Needle-Scaler-Pneumatic-Pistol-Deburring/dp/B009UY0LME/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1481930778&sr=8-1&keywords=rust+remover+air+needle+gun
They work better when you have sharp needles. Much safer around brakes line and wiring... and better when you want to get into crevices and tight areas. You can't control that air chisel as well as a needle scaler. But sure, its good to get the big chunks off. The needles are your scaler were totally flat so of course it's not going to work that good.
That's a cool idea. I used a commercial pressure washer to knock off all the excess loose material. Worked great. Have to attack the rest of it by hand before treatment. Make sure you got that ear protection broski.
got one better it's called a media blaster with coarse blast, gets everything and in every part. and the best part you can hook up a water supply to keep the dust down once it dries take acetone to it to do a final cleaning then spray a rust inhibitor on it then what ever paint you want.
I noticed you wearing a shield, what about hearing protection with that, I wear hearing protection quite often both at work and at home as well as target practicing, and even when mowing the lawn, I already have noticable loss, and don't want to make it worse!
You do realize that your chisel is not attached properly to the air hammer, right? The metal spring on the end of the air hammer screws onto the hammer and locks the chisel in place with the hook on the end of the spring.
Silly guy, twist that coil spring a little bit and you can put the bit in all the way and then the spring acts like a real man's rubber band. Some people are so smart but miss the craziest stuff
I restore frames and my best tool is the needle scaler. The air chisel is great but it is scary using it on older frames. I work in Massachusetts near the Cape and the trucks up here take a beating.
NICE VIDEO FOR THOSE OF US WHO LIKE TO TAKE OWER TIME. SOME NICE SAND BLASTING WITH ROST TRATMENT/ PRIMER... WILL DO THE JOB. NO NEED TO BUT ANOTHER TRUCK.
I don't know how I got here. : / damn recommended section, takes you to weird places. I will admit though, this was a pretty good tip if I ever need to remove thick rust off of something in the future. So I guess thanks are in order. Cheers.
There's something about grinding/chipping rust and crud that's good therapy......same for picking grease blobs off the suspension with a dental pik...try it, you won't want to quit.
I feel like most Harbor Freight tools are a few modifications short of perfect 😆. Very nice work man. Having some fun with my 4th gen 4runner. Stay away from that rubberized crap. Give her a phosphoric acid wash and some RP-342 for that lasting protection
I used same rp-342 the salt washed off in the car wash better this winter. Only salt I see is in the bottom center of cross support. I just do phosphoric acid treatment. haha. I got one weld plate put on also. Hopefully the "rust creep" won't destroy the chassis.
Good job Krystian. Very smart with the tool. It's a disgrace that GM didn't coat there frames. Obviously on purpose knowing that they would rust out. This is why people shy away from American cars. Obvious planned obsolesence. As I said, my Nissan van is dipped. Have you used Amsoil heavy duty metal protector? Wax based protectant.
Great video, over the decades my process is do a quick pass with the needle scaler. Then the air hammer/chisel for the heavy stuff. Then back to the scaler for any small pits.
@@dominiquestephenson195 I'm using Eastwood internal frame coating. Only someone said - that if you don't have all the dirt and buildup cleaned out first - then the paint just traps moisture. hmm.
Didn't have the pressure washer and attachments. Can't imagine the mess, especially trying to blast the tight spaces with long pressure washer handle and all the water with sand blasting back on me. But I'm sure its effective on body parts.
Hey Astro thats Awesome Man , you should Patent that tool !!! But Seriously I am soon going to tackle the very Rusty ( Boston Resident) underside of my 2004 Dodge Ram with this tool. Do I need to pay you a License Fee or anything ?? Well I will Subscribe anyways. But that is truly some great modification to that tool !! Good thinking my man !!!!

Very helpful I’m dealing with heavy scale rust, this video made things a lot easier getting it cleaned up for epoxy.
Respect for the patience it takes to do that whole job.
Great tip darlin thanks so much I will use this tip on my 63' chevy nova ,God bless 🙏💜
Thanks ! I had the same problem . Now I'm all set . I would never have thought of that .
Astro camper great video, I learned a lot even though I am currently working on my 99 4x4 Chevy Thanks
Thanks for making this video
I'm about to tackle the rust on the frame of my 1970 Chevy K/10
Same 1996 Chevy C1500
I watched this video about a year ago
Today I just took the bed off a Ford ranger from western NEW YORK

That air chisel setup is pure genius! Thanks for sharing with the world...
Great video! I think you just saved me a great deal of work and frustration. Thank you
Needle Scaler air tool works great too
you are a life saver. i'm dealing with similar rust to this but not the whole frame luckily. now i have hope.
Great idea, great instruction, great video. Needle scaler works good along with air chisel.
Simple and very good idea. I had the same problem with my 56 chevy. That thing helped me alot. Greatings from germany.
Really good tip for the air chisel! Thanks. The frame looks amazing!
Dude that's genius with the rubber band, you have given me a great idea to also keep the chisel from falling out as well.
Great idea, I’m going to try that one! That’s why I never use the air hammer because the chisel never stays in. Thanks so much, Dave!
Great idea. Works faster than a needle scaler. I'll use this tip for sure.

Excellent tip with the rubber band - thanks!
I never knew u could do this ! Soo helpful
I have used the same thing on a large steel hulled boat . Works well . You can also used a cold chisel and hammer if you don't have the air tool .
ingenious yet simple and inexpensive. Thank you.
love your videos and your tips.
Good job..now prime and paint..thats what we did in the Navy, we sandblast here at autorust.com again Good Job! JC

Thanks so much for this brilliant advice
Thanks 👍 brilliant idea so simple yet effective 😊
Great tip, great presentation, thanks

Nice tip. That frame looks great.
@Astro Camper What do you paint onto your bare steel and iron once the rust is removed to protect it?
That's awesome thank you, my chisel was aggravating I'm going to try that 💯👍
Great idea! :) and gradt video!
Now that was a great tip. Thanks I’ll be using that technique.
That simple idea really works well. Nice job. I have a 99 gmc so I may need to fix me up a tool like that also.

Good job. As I say - necessity breeds creativity ...
Thanks for the good tip
the ingenuity is impressive. utmost respect for you.
Fantastic thanks I will try it..
a question, does rust stop getting worse when moving to dry area?
You could use a needle scaler . Pretty much the same thing but works alot faster
Needle scalers are useless. Watch the video to the end please.

@@troutjunkie7330 cheap piece of shit needle scalers are useless, a real one hits harder than your air chisel.
Hey , thinking of doing this ,how hard was it lifting the bed ? How many guys?
what did you do about the frame under the cab?
Many thanks,,
What about the frame supports up front by the engine? I would be very concerned about that. Are you going to show us that? Also shackle repair.
Jay Gold I'm doing only the rear of the truck while I have the bed off. Later I will move to the front and work on that.
you need a air chipping hammer like for welding , check them.out they work great for what your doing
great idea!!!!
wow thanks for the video
thanks for the insight mate
larks head knot. nice work. thanks for sharing
May I suggest a Needle Scaler. Its made for the job and won't chisel though your now much thinner steel as easily.
Needle scalers are useless for heavy rust, good only on surface rust. I did use bunch of them.
They work better when you have sharp needles. Much safer around brakes line and wiring... and better when you want to get into crevices and tight areas. You can't control that air chisel as well as a needle scaler. But sure, its good to get the big chunks off. That's a cool idea. I used a commercial pressure washer to knock off all the excess loose material. Worked great. Have to attack the rest of it by hand before treatment. Make sure you got that ear protection broski.
After using the rubber band method I've found you can adjust the hit strength by using different strength rubber bands.
Try a wire wheel. Sandblasting works great too for surfaces like this. Also a high powered pressure washer ...
got one better it's called a media blaster with coarse blast, gets everything and in every part. and the best part you can hook up a water supply to keep the dust down once it dries take acetone to it to do a final cleaning then spray a rust inhibitor on it then what ever paint you want.

he should just talk at the rust to bore it off
Nice guys briliant bit of advise
I restore frames and my best tool is the needle scaler. The air chisel is great but it is scary using it on older frames. I work in Massachusetts near the Cape and the trucks up here take a beating.
That must surely weaken the frame quite a bit ? or is the part of the flake wax and shit from the road ?
Sébastien Cilia- They are usually built with a margin of safety. Still, it is good to stop the rust as soon as possible .

The knot with the rubber band you made is called a cow hitch.
